SN 2018ijp: the explosion of a stripped-envelope star within a dense H-rich shell?

In this work, we discuss the outcomes of the follow-up campaign of SN 2018ijp, discovered as part of the Zwicky Transient Facility survey for optical transients. Its first spectrum shows similarities to broad-lined Type Ic supernovae around maximum light, whereas later spectra display strong signatures of interaction between rapidly expanding ejecta and a dense H-rich circumstellar medium, coinciding with a second peak in the photometric evolution of the transient. This evolution, along with the results of modeling of the first light-curve peak, suggests a scenario where a stripped star exploded within a dense circumstellar medium. The two main phases in the evolution of the transient could be interpreted as a first phase dominated by radioactive decays, and a later interaction-dominated phase where the ejecta collide with a pre-existing shell. We therefore discuss SN 2018jp within the context of a massive star depleted of its outer layers exploding within a dense H-rich circumstellar medium.

Following Fission Products in Explosive Astrophysical Environments

The astrophysical process by which the heaviest elements are formed in the universe is known as the rapid neutron capture process, or r process, of nucleosynthesis. The r process is characterized by the neutron capture and β - decay of short-lived, neutron-rich atomic nuclei; in suitably extreme environments, nuclear fission can also play a major role in determining the ensuing nucleosynthesis. In this work, we present the application of our recently developed nucleosynthesis tracing framework to precisely quantify the impact that neutron-induced and β - -delayed fission processes have in r-process environments that produce fissioning nuclei.

Enhancing the x-ray output of a single-wire explosion with a gas-puff based plasma opening switch

Here, we present experiments performed on the 1 MA COBRA generator using a low density, annular, gas-puff z-pinch implosion as an opening switch to rapidly transfer a current pulse into a single metal wire on axis. This gas-puff on axial wire configuration was studied for its promise as an opening switch and as a means of enhancing the x-ray output of the wire. We demonstrate that current can be switched from the gas-puff plasma into the wire, and that the timing of the switch can be controlled by the gas-puff plenum backing pressure. X-ray detector measurements indicate that for low plenum pressure Kr or Xe shots with a copper wire, this configuration can offer a significant enhancement in the peak intensity and temporal distribution of radiation in the 1–10 keV range.

Distinguishing the XUV-induced Coulomb explosion dynamics of iodobenzene using covariance analysis

The primary and secondary fragmentation dynamics of iodobenzene following its ionization at 120 eV were determined using three-dimensional velocity map imaging and covariance analysis. Site-selective iodine 4d ionization was used to populate a range of excited polycationic parent states, which primarily broke apart at the carbon-iodine bond to produce I+ with phenyl or phenyl-like cations (C n H x + or C n H, with n = 1 – 6 and x = 1 – 5). The molecular products were produced with varying degrees of internal excitation and dehydrogenation, leading to stable and unstable outcomes. This further allowed the secondary dynamics of C 6 H x 2+ intermediates to be distinguished using native-frame covariance analysis, which isolated these processes in their own centre-of-mass reference frames. Furthermore, the mass resolution of the imaging mass spectrometer used for these measurements enabled the primary and secondary reaction channels to be specified at the level of individual hydrogen atoms, demonstrating the ability of covariance analysis to comprehensively measure the competing fragmentation channels of aryl cations, including those involving intermediate steps.

Constraining explosive nucleosynthesis by indirect reaction methods at storage rings using unstable beams in batch mode

Nuclear reaction studies on unstable isotopes can strongly help in improving our understanding of nucleosynthesis in stars. Indirect approaches to determining astrophysical reaction rates are increasingly common-place and undergoing continuous refinement. Of particular interest is the use of such indirect techniques at storage rings, which, among other aspects, allow to recycle rare unstable beams. Here, we propose to investigate the reaction rates of astrophysical interest using indirect methods (surrogate, Trojan horse, etc.) in reverse kinematics at the IMP-CAS storage ring. Long lived radioactive ion beams, produced remotely, can be accelerated, and made to interact with light targets. The proposed reactions are 85 Kr(p, p’γ), 85 Kr(d, pγ), constraining the neutron flux in an s-process branching point, 79 Se(p, p’γ), 79 Se(d, pγ), constraining the temperature in s-process nucleosyntheses, and 59 Fe(d, pγ), constraining core collapse supernovae.

A SynBio explosion: a whole new world for Rubisco engineering

The first Escherichia coli synthetic biology (SynBio) system to successfully heterologously assemble chloroplast Rubisco represented the culmination of decades of Rubisco biogenesis research (Aigner et al., 2017). This system for Arabidopsis Rubisco ushered in a new era of higher throughput Rubisco studies, and has since been adapted for a limited number of other Rubiscos, accelerating both fundamental and applied Rubisco research. Archer et al. (2025) have developed new SynBio systems to assemble a larger variety of C 3 Rubiscos and the first C 4 and monocot Rubiscos, greatly expanding crop Rubisco engineering capabilities. Their explorations of chaperone selectivity and versatility could enable rapid production of SynBio systems for additional species.

From core collapse to superluminous: the rates of massive stellar explosions from the Palomar Transient Factory

ABSTRACT We present measurements of the local core-collapse supernova (CCSN) rate using SN discoveries from the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). We use a Monte Carlo simulation of hundreds of millions of SN light-curve realizations coupled with the detailed PTF survey detection efficiencies to forward model the SN rates in PTF. Using a sample of 86 CCSNe, including 26 stripped-envelope SNe (SESNe), we show that the overall CCSN volumetric rate is $r^\mathrm{CC}_v=9.10_{-1.27}^{+1.56}\times 10^{-5}\, \text{SNe yr}^{-1}\, \text{Mpc}^{-3}\, h_{70}^{3}$ at 〈z〉 = 0.028, and the SESN volumetric rate is $r^\mathrm{SE}_v=2.41_{-0.64}^{+0.81}\times 10^{-5}\, \text{SNe yr}^{-1}\, \text{Mpc}^{-3}\, h_{70}^{3}$. We further measure a volumetric rate for hydrogen-free superluminous SNe (SLSNe-I) using eight events at z ≤ 0.2 of $r^\mathrm{SLSN-I}_v=35_{-13}^{+25}\, \text{SNe yr}^{-1}\text{Gpc}^{-3}\, h_{70}^{3}$, which represents the most precise SLSN-I rate measurement to date. Using a simple cosmic star formation history to adjust these volumetric rate measurements to the same redshift, we measure a local ratio of SLSN-I to SESN of ${\sim}1/810^{+1500}_{-94}$, and of SLSN-I to all CCSN types of ${\sim}1/3500^{+2800}_{-720}$. However, using host galaxy stellar mass as a proxy for metallicity, we also show that this ratio is strongly metallicity dependent: in low-mass (logM* < 9.5 M⊙) galaxies, which are the only environments that host SLSN-I in our sample, we measure an SLSN-I to SESN fraction of $1/300^{+380}_{-170}$ and $1/1700^{+1800}_{-720}$ for all CCSN. We further investigate the SN rates a function of host galaxy stellar mass, and show that the specific rates of all CCSNe decrease with increasing stellar mass.
