CAMAC and NIM systems in the space program

The CAMAC and NIM instrumentation systems were developed originally to serve the needs of nuclear research institutions in Europe and North America. CAMAC and NIM are currently considered in several studies at the systems level conducted by NASA and ESRO groups. NIM and CAMAC studies for applications related to the space shuttle are discussed along with the advantages provided by aspects of modularization and standardization, a use of NIM and CAMAC equipment in connection with a group of astrophysics experiments, and questions of cost effectiveness.

Systems, methods and computer program products for collaborative agent control

Systems, methods and unmanned agents for collaboratively controlling agents in a collaborative network by one or more agents continuously simulating numeric models of one or more other agents in the network to dramatically reduce the computational bandwidth required between agents, and improve the quality of shared estimates of the agent locations as well as the locations and characteristics of other objects of interest, e.g. targets. Bandwidth is reduced by using the models to intelligently filter data before communicating.

Use of low orbital satellite communications systems for humanitarian programs

Communication and information exchange play a decisive role in progress and social development. However, in many parts of the world the communication infrastructure is inadequate and the capacity for on-line exchange of information may not exist. This is true of underdeveloped countries, remote and relatively inaccessible regions, sites of natural disasters, and of all cases where the resources needed to create complex communication systems are limited. The creation of an inexpensive space communications system to service such areas is therefore a high priority task. In addition to a relatively low-cost space segment, an inexpensive space communications systems requires a large number of ground terminals, which must be relatively inexpensive, energy efficient (using power generated by storage batteries, or solar arrays, etc.), small in size, and must not require highly expert maintenance. The ground terminals must be portable, and readily deployable. Communications satellites in geostationary orbit at altitudes of about 36,000 km are very expensive and require complex and expensive ground stations and launch vehicles. Given current technology, it is categorically impossible to develop inexpensive satellite systems with portable ground terminals using such satellites. To solve the problem of developing an inexpensive satellite communications system that can operate with relatively small ground stations, including portable terminals, we propose to use a system with satellites in low Earth orbit, at an altitude of 900-1500 km. Because low orbital satellites are much closer to the Earth than geostationary ones and require vastly less energy expenditure by the satellite and ground terminals for transmission of messages, a system using them is relatively inexpensive. Such a system could use portable ground terminals no more complex than ordinary mobile police radios.

A technology program for large area space systems

The broad objective of the Large Space Systems Technology (LSST) program is to define and develop the necessary technology for large space systems and associated subsystems required for projected NASA space missions. It is a goal of LSST to make these systems economically and technically feasible by focusing on those technical activities believed to provide the greatest benefit to a variety of future systems. Emphasis is placed on two principal structural configurations: antennas and platforms.

Recommendations for Establishing Local Rural Electrification Programs Using Photovoltaic Systems [Recomendaciones Para la Implantacidn de Programas Locales de Electrificacidn Rural con Sistemas Fotovoltaicos]

Photovoltaic (PV) technology is becoming one the best options for supplying electricity to rural communities far from electrical networks and which have a small and disperse demand for electricity. As the cost of the technology goes down and its development advances, opportunities for applying it continue to grow. As a result, in the near future we will probably see an increase in massive application programs of this technology in rural Mexico. This document presents some of the most relevant problems needing immediate solution to increase the possibility of success in establishing photovoltaic programs for rural electrification in Mexico. These problems are influenced by economic, technological, engineering, infrastructural, social and political issues. The paper presents the requirements for an industrial center based on PV technology, the accessibility of replacement parts and maintenance service, development of financial solutions, training of the users and introducing norms and technical regulations. The document summarizes the issue of rural electrification in Mexico, emphasizing the low population density in these areas. A brief description is given of photovoltaics showing different configurations that can be utilized for supplying electricity to the rural areas. The issues involved and recommendations for introducing PV systems to the rural area are described.

Program documentation standards

A style manual is presented to serve as a reference and guide for system and program documentation. It is intended to set standards for documentation, prescribing the procedures to be followed, format to be used, and information to be produced. The standards for program documentation specify the extent to which the programmer should support his efforts in writing. The first three sections of the manual (system, program, and operation descriptions) contain information of particular interest to management, operators, and program users, respectively. Each section was designed as a self-sufficient description from the management, operator, or user point of view.

Optimal operations of a nuclear-based integrated energy system: A mixed integer program approach

A nuclear-based integrated energy system (IES), consisting of multiple carbon-free energy generation and conversion technologies to meet heterogeneous end-use demands, offers a promising approach to decarbonizing the U.S. economy. Operating such an IES is challenging due to its complexity and the diverse end-use demands, such as heating and electricity. This paper aims to address the optimal operation of an IES composed of a small modular reactor (SMR), a steam manifold, a balance of plant (BOP), a high-temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) system, a district heating (DH) network, and electrical grids. We formulate the system’s operation as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem to maximize net revenues from sales of electricity and hydrogen. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed model, we conduct a 24-hour simulation considering day-ahead (DA) electricity prices from CAISO and a varying DH demand profile with hourly resolution. The simulation results show that our model effectively optimizes the operation by selling electricity during on-peak periods and purchasing electricity for hydrogen production during off-peak periods, while satisfying operating constraints within the IES.

Finite-volume pionless effective field theory for few-nucleon systems with differentiable programming

Finite-volume pionless effective field theory provides an efficient framework for the extrapolation of nuclear spectra and matrix elements calculated at finite volume in lattice QCD to infinite volume, and to nuclei with larger atomic number. In this work, it is demonstrated how this framework may be implemented via a set of correlated Gaussian wave functions optimized using differentiable programming and via solution of a generalized eigenvalue problem. This approach is shown to be significantly more efficient than a stochastic implementation of the variational method based on the same form of correlated Gaussian wave functions, yielding comparably accurate representations of the ground-state wave functions with an order of magnitude fewer terms. The efficiency of representation allows such calculations to be extended to larger systems than in previous work. Further, the method is demonstrated through calculations of the binding energies of nuclei with atomic number A ϵ {2,3,4} in finite volume, matched to lattice QCD calculations at quark masses corresponding to m π = 806 MeV, and infinite-volume effective field theory calculations of A ϵ {2,3,4,5,6} systems based on this matching.

Primal-Dual Differentiable Programming for Distribution System Critical Load Restoration: Preprint

Swift and reliable critical load restoration (CLR) can help make a distribution system resilient towards extreme events. To optimally achieve that, alongside practical concerns such as limiting online computational burden, some studies leverage model-free reinforcement learning (RL) to train control policies. Despite the advantages provided by RL algorithms, these approaches suffer from two issues: 1) the lack of a proper mechanism for constraint enforcement, and 2) poor sample efficiency. Therefore, in this paper, a primal-dual differentiable programming (PDDP) method is developed for guiding the training leading to a constraint-satisfying policy. Additionally, the model-based nature of the proposed method aims at improving sample efficiency. The experiment on a CLR problem demonstrates that PDDP can effectively train a control policy that both achieves desirable performance and satisfies required constraints.
