Laboratory Testing of Portable Air Cleaner Products for Energy Efficiency and Clean Air Performance at Various Fan Settings [Slides]

This document contains the results of a product review and laboratory testing experiment of portable air cleaning devices (PACs). Thirty-four commercially available PACs were reviewed, and from those, 7 products were purchased and underwent AHAM AC-7 clean air delivery rate (CADR) testing. The following research questions were explored: 1) What is the relationship between clean air delivery rate (CADR) and energy across a range of products and what is the general decrement in CADR as a result of operating at lower fan speeds? 2) How might the multiple units at lower power compare to fewer, larger units at full power in terms of energy efficiency and total cost? 3) How do the measured CADR, power, and efficiency compare to the manufacturer specs? 4) Are there product attributes that can be identified that might contribute to better CADR/W performance?

Household Energy Use in Pennsylvania's Delaware Valley: An Energy-Focused Housing Stock Analysis

This report covers the housing stock analysis of the Energy to Communities Delaware Valley project. The analysis covers the housing stock of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties that border Philadelphia County in southeast Pennsylvania. It focuses primarily on single-family houses including their existing characteristics and energy consumption and the potential impact of various retrofit measure packages applied to them. This analysis was a collaborative effort among the project team, including national lab researchers and local organizations. It derives primarily from results of modeling tools from the national labs, especially NLR's ResStock, supplemented by key information from the study area.

Revitalizing Canton City Schools: A Sustainable and Cost-Effective Energy Efficiency Plan

The primary objective of this project was to focus on conducting the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Level 2 Energy Audits of all the schools/school facilities in the portfolio, and on developing a comprehensive Strategic Plan for implementing energy improvements. The overall aim of budget period 1 (BP1) was to implement Energy Audits and the Strategic Plan to provide a clear pathway to prioritize energy improvements as well as allow the district to access private sector funding (if needed) and/or tax credits and realize high-impact health and safety benefits for Budget Period 2.

Progressing Analysis of Variable Electric Rates (PAVER) Study

The Progressing Analysis of Variable Electric Rates (PAVER) study analyzed the impact of a range of time-varying electric rates on the performance of a regional electric grid and the resulting costs for participating and non-participating customers. This analysis leveraged and extended the work of PNNL’s Distribution System Operator with Transactive (DSO+T) study. Five different rate designs were included: a flat volumetric energy charge, a typical Time of Use (TOU) rate, a dynamic energy (DE) rate (based on wholesale locational marginal prices), a dynamic energy and capacity (DE+C) rate, and, finally, a Block and Swing (B&S) rate that billed customers based on their average load profile at constant pricing, but used the DE+C dynamic price for load deviations from their average profile. These rates were analyzed in a large-scale co-simulation of an entire regional grid with a customer population representative of the current state. A large fraction (80%) of residential and commercial customers were assumed to participate in these time-varying rates with automatically controlled HVAC, water heaters, electric vehicles, and batteries. This study assumed no industrial sector participation. The DE and DE+C rates saw system peak loads reduced by 6-7%, while the large participation in the TOU rate case saw a significant rebound effect and a resulting peak load increase of >5%. The impacts to the annual and peak system demand impacted system wholesale prices and the overall grid operating costs. This cost structure determined the revenue needed to be collected from customers by each rate design. Participating customers on the DE and DE+C rates (located in one of the modeled DSOs) saw reductions in average annual electricity bills of 11-17% with average increases in monthly bill variation of no more than 13%. At such high participation levels, TOU customers saw 10% higher average annual bills (due to system-wide rebound effects) and average increased monthly bill variation of 16%. Residential owners of large flexible loads (such as electric vehicles) saw larger bill savings (17-20%) when on a fully dynamic rate. The presence of on-site generation (such as rooftop solar) did not appear to appreciably change customer outcomes. Customers on the Block and Swing rate did see 6% lower monthly bill variation (as intended) than the flat rate case, but at the expense of appreciable bill savings, which were only 3%, comparable to the savings seen by non-participants. Given this finding we recommend that additional research be conducted into how best various bill protection mechanisms can balance minimizing customer bill variation with providing financial incentives commensurate with the flexibility customers provide. We also recommend that customer outcomes be explored across a range of regions using current actual customer and system cost data.

Optimization of wall assembly for DOE Efficient New Homes Program in HUD’s Climate Zones 2 and 3

Manufactured homes provide affordable housing for over 20 million Americans. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Efficient New Homes (ENH) program has introduced new energy certification requirements that manufacturers can optionally target to ensure outstanding levels of energy savings, comfort, health, and durability. In collaboration with Clayton Homes (under User Agreement (NN-23-1469)), Oak Ridge National Laboratory evaluated multiple wall assembly options to meet ENH requirements in HUD Climate Zones 2 and 3, with a target maximum cost premium of 5%. After analyzing thermal performance, cost, and manufacturability, insulated structural sheathing was identified as the most practical and effective solution. A full-scale manufactured home prototype demonstrated that this approach meets energy performance goals with minimal disruption to existing manufacturing processes and a cost premium of less than 10% with a path to further lower costs, offering a promising path forward for more efficient manufactured housing.
