Data Cards for Standardized Metadata Across DOE-Aligned Data Initiatives: Toward Transparent, Interoperable, and Governed Dataset Documentation

As data-intensive research, advanced computing, and artificial intelligence become increasingly central to scientific and operational workflows, the need for consistent, transparent, and machine-actionable documentation has grown correspondingly. Multiple DOE-aligned communities—including Office of Science, Genesis Mission, American Science Cloud (AmSC), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) stewardship and governance, and related cross-laboratory collaborations—have independently developed metadata practices to support discovery, access, reuse, repository deposit, and compliance.

OC6 Phase Ia - Nonlinear hydrodynamic loading validation dataset

Two validation campaigns were examined within the Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration, Continued, with Correlation and unCertainty (OC6) Phase 1 project to examine the modeling tools' underprediction of loads and motion of a floating wind semisubmersible (semi) at their surge and pitch natural frequencies. These campaigns were performed at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) in 2017 and 2018. The load cases (LC) considered include: LC1 – Load measurements across semi under current loading; LC2 - Load measurements across semi under forced surge oscillation; LC3 – Load measurements across semi under wave loading, while held fixed; LC4 – Free-decay motion measurements in surge, pitch, and heave; and LC5 – Motion measurements under wave loading. Details on the results from the OC6 Phase Ia project can be found in the reference, “OC6 Phase 1: Investigating the underprediction of low-frequency hydrodynamic loads and responses of floating wind turbines”, J Phys: Conf Series 1618 032033.

Deep vadose zone respiration contributions to CO2 fluxes from a semi-arid floodplain, Vadose Zone Journal: Dataset

This data package provides lists of parameter values presented in the paper “Deep vadose zone respiration contributions to CO2 fluxes from a semi-arid floodplain” by Tokunaga et al., Vadose Zone J. 2016. Each table or figure from that paper that contains numerical information is represented as a sheet within the Excel file. Table 1 lists depth profile values for particle-size, bulk density, and parameters for correlating moisture contents with matric potentials. Table 2 lists soil respiration fluxes reported in other studies of semi-arid environments. Figure 3. Presents representative relations between moisture contents with matric potentials. Figure 4 presents depth profiles on different dates at site TT03 for hydraulic head, matric head, pore space volumetric air fraction, temperature, and the effective CO2 diffusion coefficient. Figure 5a presents the time-dependence of relative water table elevation (relative to the deepest measured depth during the study), daily CO2 flux rates at the soil surface, and soil temperature at a depth of 0.20 m. Figure 5b presents continuous measurements of CO2 flux and soil temperature. Figure 6 presents depth profiles on different dates of CO2 concentrations in the gas phase at the 5 monitoring stations. Figure 7 presents CO2 surface fluxes calculated by the gradient method, comparisons between calculated and measured rates at the soil surface, CO2 fluxes at 2m depth, and the ratio of deep (2 m) to surface CO2 fluxes.

Using strontium isotopes to evaluate the spatial variation of groundwater recharge, Science of The Total Environment: Dataset

Data tables used in Christensen et al. 2018 Using strontium isotopes to evaluate the spatial variation of groundwater recharge, Science of The Total Environment, 637-638, 672-685 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2018.05.019 Files include Sr and U isotopic (87Sr/86Sr and 234U/238U) and concentration data for groundwaters, porewaters, and surface waters at the Rifle, Colorado field site, as well as mass balance modeling results for the percentage of vadose zone porewater in groundwater.

Transport and humification of dissolved organic matter within a semi-arid floodplain: Dataset

Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy, humification index (HIX) and specific UV absorbance (SUVA) at 254 nm were to characterize depth and seasonal variations of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) composition within sediments of a semi-arid floodplain at Rifle, Colorado, USA. It is expected that these relatively simple spectroscopic measurements (e.g., EEM spectroscopy, HIX and SUVA) applied to depth- and temporally-distributed pore-water samples can provide useful insights into transport and humification of DOM in other subsurface environments as well.

Influence of hydrological, biogeochemical and temperature transients on subsurface carbon fluxes in a flood plain environment, Biogeochemistry: Dataset

Data tables used in Arora et al. 2016b Influence of hydrological, biogeochemical and temperature transients on subsurface carbon fluxes in a flood plain environment. Biogeochemistry, 127(2-3), 367-396. Files include reactive transport model parameters describing soil physical and thermal parameters, geochemical reaction network and rate laws, as well as initial and boundary conditions. The last table documents modeling results with respect to annual carbon fluxes from the site to the river.
