Advanced software techniques for data management systems. Volume 3: Programming language characteristics and comparison reference

A comparative evaluation was made of eight higher order languages of general interest in the aerospace field: PL/1; HAL; JOVIAL/J3; SPL/J6; CLASP; ALGOL 60; FORTRAN 4; and MAC360. A summary of the functional requirements for a language for general use in manned aerodynamic applications is presented. The evaluation supplies background material to be used in assessing the worth of each language for some particular application.

Integrated space program and vehicle system analysis (study B)

Work accomplished in the analysis of systems, space basing concepts, and space shuttle studies and alternative concepts is reported with emphasis on the preparation of cost estimates. It is concluded that space basing, as an operational mode, permits the assembly and maintenance of large space vehicles and payloads in low earth orbit, and may become the basing mode for space exploration.

An automated system for generating program documentation

A documentation program was developed in which the emphasis is placed on text content rather than flowcharting. It is keyword oriented, with 26 keywords that control the program. Seventeen of those keywords are recognized by the flowchart generator, three are related to text generation, and three have to do with control card and deck displays. The strongest advantage offered by the documentation program is that it produces the entire document. The document is prepared on 35mm microfilm, which is easy to store, and letter-size reproductions can be made inexpensively on bond paper.

NASA automatic system for computer program documentation, volume 2

The DYNASOR 2 program is used for the dynamic nonlinear analysis of shells of revolution. The equations of motion of the shell are solved using Houbolt's numerical procedure. The displacements and stress resultants are determined for both symmetrical and asymmetrical loading conditions. Asymmetrical dynamic buckling can be investigated. Solutions can be obtained for highly nonlinear problems utilizing as many as five of the harmonics generated by SAMMSOR program. A restart capability allows the user to restart the program at a specified time. For Vol. 1, see N73-22129.

Screwworm Eradication Data System (SEDS) applications program documentation, part 2

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite data, which is in analog tape form, is converted into output data products. These products are used by investigators in determining optimum areas for airdrops of steril screwworm flies over Mexico. The output product of SEDS takes the form of imagery data film slides showing Mexico and the lower southwest portion of the United States. The area analog preprocessing phase of the SEDS task is covered.

Improved computer programs for calculating potential flow in propulsion system inlets

Computer programs to calculate the incompressible potential flow corrected for compressibility in axisymmetric inlets at arbitrary operating conditions are presented. Included are a statement of the problem to be solved, a description of each of the programs and sufficient documentation, including a test case, to enable a user to run the programs.

The Role of Aerospace Technology in Agriculture. The 1977 Summer Faculty Fellowship Program in Engineering Systems Design

Possibilities were examined for improving agricultural productivity through the application of aerospace technology. An overview of agriculture and of the problems of feeding a growing world population are presented. The present state of agriculture, of plant and animal culture, and agri-business are reviewed. Also analyzed are the various systems for remote sensing, particularly applications to agriculture. The report recommends additional research and technology in the areas of aerial application of chemicals, of remote sensing systems, of weather and climate investigations, and of air vehicle design. Also considered in detail are the social, legal, economic, and political results of intensification of technical applications to agriculture.

Thermal protection system repair kit program

The feasibility and conceptual design aspects of repair materials and procedures for in orbit repair of the space shuttle orbiter TPS tiles are investigated. Material studies to investigate cure in place materials are described including catalyst and cure studies, ablation tests and evaluations, and support mixing and applicator design. The feasibility of the repair procedures, the storage of the TPS, dispensing, and cure problems are addressed.

Extravehicular Crewman Work System (ECWS) study program: Prebreathe elimination study

The study examined impacts of changing Orbiter cabin pressure and EMU EVA pressure to eliminate pure O2 prebreathing prior to EVA. The investigation defines circumscribing physiological boundaries and identifies changes required within Orbiter to reduce cabin pressure. The study also identifies payload impacts, payload flight assignment constraints, and impacts upon EMU resulting from raising EVA pressure. The study presents the trade-off which optimizes the choice of reduced cabin pressure and increased EVA pressure.

Data reduction programs for a laser radar system

The listing and description of software routines which were used to analyze the analog data obtained from LIDAR - system are given. All routines are written in FORTRAN - IV on a HP - 1000/F minicomputer which serves as the heart of the data acquisition system for the LIDAR program. This particular system has 128 kilobytes of highspeed memory and is equipped with a Vector Instruction Set (VIS) firmware package, which is used in all the routines, to handle quick execution of different long loops. The system handles floating point arithmetic in hardware in order to enhance the speed of execution. This computer is a 2177 C/F series version of HP - 1000 RTE-IVB data acquisition computer system which is designed for real time data capture/analysis and disk/tape mass storage environment.

Selecting cockpit functions for speech I/O technology

A general methodology for the initial selection of functions for speech generation and speech recognition technology is discussed. The SCR (Stimulus/Central-Processing/Response) compatibility model of Wickens et al. (1983) is examined, and its application is demonstrated for a particular cockpit display problem. Some limits of the applicability of that model are illustrated in the context of predicting overall pilot-aircraft system performance. A program of system performance measurement is recommended for the evaluation of candidate systems. It is suggested that no one measure of system performance can necessarily be depended upon to the exclusion of others. Systems response time, system accuracy, and pilot ratings are all important measures. Finally, these measures must be collected in the context of the total flight task environment.
