Flexible polyurethane foams are a diverse class of materials encompassing furniture, packaging, automotive, and many other industrial and domestic applications. Polyurethane foams are synthesized by the addition of polyols and isocyanates; however, the petroleum origin and toxic nature of isocyanates have driven many to look for more sustainable routes to production. Renewable fillers have emerged as a biobased resource to decrease the carbon footprint of this widely used polymeric material. In this study, soy hulls, as mass-produced, industrial by-products of soybean production, were used to create a biochar beneficial in the synthesis of flexible polyurethane foam composites. The addition of soy hull biochar was found to maintain the compression properties of foams at a decreasing isocyanate index, reducing the amount of isocyanates needed for production. In addition, the addition of biochar decreased the flammability of foams, important for many applications where consumer safety is important. The results point to the ability to create safer, more sustainable, and even more cost-effective polyurethane foams through the reduction in isocyanate use while maintaining the properties of this important class of polymers.

Radiation therapy plays a prominent role in breast cancer treatment, but the high doses of radiation damage both healthy and cancerous cells. Therefore, additional research is needed into combination therapies that could preferentially radiosensitize cancer cells compared to surrounding healthy tissue without causing deleterious side effects. Histone deacetylase inhibitor drugs (HDACis) have been tested as radiosensitizers in both basic research and clinical trials, but the long exposure time typically used in these treatments and the lack of matched healthy cell controls often leave aspects of their mechanism of action unclear. Here, we show that transient (2 h) trichostatin A (TSA) treatment of cancerous and non-tumorigenic breast epithelial cell lines increases immediate DNA damage and decreases long term cell viability in both cell types at high radiation doses. Transient TSA treatment also causes an increase in DNA damage signals after 5 Gy X-rays in other cancer and healthy cell types: A375 melanoma cells and BJ5-ta fibroblasts. This suggests that chromatin decompaction acts to increase cellular vulnerability to initial DNA damage from high doses of radiation in a cell type independent manner that does not rely on changes to DNA repair pathways caused by longer TSA treatment. However, responses to lower doses of radiation and long term survival are more cell type specific: only MCF7 cells experience an effect of TSA on DNA damage after 1 Gy X-ray radiation while MCF10a cells experience somewhat more evident cell viability effects of combined TSA and radiation treatment long term.

ABSTRACT We study galaxy interactions in the large-scale environment around A2670, a massive (M200 = $8.5 \pm 1.2~\times 10^{14} \, \mathrm{{M}_{\odot }}$) and interacting galaxy cluster at z = 0.0763. We first characterize the environment of the cluster out to 5× R200 and find a wealth of substructures, including the main cluster core, a large infalling group, and several other substructures. To study the impact of these substructures (pre-processing) and their accretion into the main cluster (post-processing) on the member galaxies, we visually examined optical images to look for signatures indicative of gravitational or hydrodynamical interactions. We find that ∼21 per cent of the cluster galaxies have clear signs of disturbances, with most of those (∼60 per cent) likely being disturbed by ram pressure. The number of ram-pressure stripping candidates found (101) in A2670 is the largest to date for a single system, and while they are more common in the cluster core, they can be found even at >4 × R200, confirming cluster influence out to large radii. In support of a pre-processing scenario, most of the disturbed galaxies follow the substructures found, with the richest structures having more disturbed galaxies. Post-processing also seems plausible, as many galaxy–galaxy mergers are seen near the cluster core, which is not expected in relaxed clusters. In addition, there is a comparable fraction of disturbed galaxies in and outside substructures. Overall, our results highlight the complex interplay of gas stripping and gravitational interactions in actively assembling clusters up to 5 × R200, motivating wide-area studies in larger cluster samples.
