Reversible CO 2 Hydrogenation, Neutron Crystallography, and Hydride Reactivity of a Triiridium Heptahydride Complex

Abstract The authors report the structure, reactivity, and catalytic utility of a triiridium complex, [Ir 3 H 6 ( μ 3 ‐H)(PN) 3 ] 2+ ( 2‐H , PN = (2‐pyridyl)CH 2 PBu t 2 ). Despite its unusual stability to unsaturated organics, electrophiles, and even CF 3 SO 3 D, they find that complex 2‐H catalyzes hydrogenation of CO 2 to formate (TON Ir = 9600) and reverse formic acid dehydrogenation (TON Ir = 54 400). The hydrogenation operates via a reactive intermediate [Ir 3 H 4 ( μ ‐H) 4 (PN) 3 ] + ( 5 ). Neutron crystallography and DFT‐supported neutron vibrational spectroscopy of 2‐H reveal Ir─H bond lengths and elucidate the vibration modes within the Ir 3 H 7 core. Stoichiometric oxidation of 2‐H produces four classes of iridium complexes of varied nuclearity and hydride structure: tetra‐ and pentanuclear clusters [Ir 3 H 6 ( μ 3 ‐AuPPh 3 )(PN) 3 ] 2+ ( 2‐Au ) and [Ag{Ir 2 H 4 ( μ ‐OAc)(PN) 2 } 2 ] 3+ ( 6 ) are generated using AuPPh 3 + and AgOAc, respectively. Further oxidation to class [Ir 2 H 3 ( μ ‐X) 2 (PN) 2 ] + is possible with AgOAc, Hg(OAc) 2 , or I 2 . Finally, a TEMPO/HCl system completely oxidizes the hydrides and gives [Ir 2 Cl 4 ( μ ‐Cl) 2 (PN) 2 ] ( 11 ).

Late-Stage Oxidation of C( sp 3 )─H Bonds with High Efficiency and Alkyl Group Dihydroxylation of Complex Molecules

Here, the late-stage oxidation of C(sp 3 )─H bonds is highly valuable for modulating the solubility and binding of bioactive compounds and for diversification of complex molecules. Undirected methods for C(sp 3 )─H oxidation are valuable for the installation of hydroxyl groups at sites remote from other functional groups present in the molecule, but existing catalysts are limited by low turnover numbers and lengthy ligand syntheses. Perfluorinated ruthenium porphyrins are highly active catalysts for the oxidation of alkyl C─H bonds, but the scope of the transformation with complex molecules under conditions of limiting substrate has not been investigated. We report that carbonylruthenium(II) tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin [Ru(TPFPP)(CO)] catalyzes the selective oxidation of tertiary C(sp 3 )─H bonds in a broad range of complex natural products and drugs, with turnover numbers as high as 1000, and the tolerance of the reaction to various functional groups was rapidly assessed by performing a model reaction in the presence of additives. We show how the combination of this undirected C(sp 3 )─H oxidation and a directed C(sp 3 )─H silylation and oxidation provides rapid access to highly oxidized, 1,2-diol derivatives of natural products by a formal dihydroxylation of an alkyl group.

Synthesis and Characterization of Iridium(V) Coordination Complexes With an N,O-Donor Organic Ligand

Here, we have prepared and fully characterized two isomers of [IrI V (dpyp) 2 ] (dpyp=meso-2,4-di(2-pyridinyl)-2,4-pentanediolate). These complexes can cleanly oxidize to [Ir V (dpyp) 2 ] + , which to our knowledge represent the first mononuclear coordination complexes of Ir V in an N,O-donor environment. One isomer has been fully characterized in the Ir V state, including by X-ray crystallography, XPS, and DFT calculations, all of which validate metal-centered oxidation. The unprecedented stability of these Ir V complexes is ascribed to the exceptional donor strength of the ligands, their resistance to oxidative degradation, and the presence of four highly donor alkoxide groups in a plane, which breaks the degeneracy of the d-orbitals and favors oxidation.

Isolation of a TMTAA-Based Radical in Uranium bis-TMTAA Complexes

Here, we report the synthesis, characterization, and electronic structure studies of a series of thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) bis-tetramethyltetraazaannulene complexes. These sandwich complexes demonstrate remarkable stability towards air and moisture, even at elevated temperatures. Electrochemical studies show the uranium complex to be stable in three different oxidation states; isolation of the oxidized species revealed a rare case of a non-innocent TMTAA ligand.

Synthesis and Reactivity of Paramagnetic Nickel Polypyridyl Complexes Relevant to C(sp 2 )–C(sp 3 )Coupling Reactions

A number of new transition metal catalyzed methods for the formation of C(sp 2 )–C(sp 3 ) bonds have recently been described. These reactions often utilize bidentate polypyridyl-ligated Ni catalysts, and paramagnetic NiI halide or aryl species are proposed in the catalytic cycles. However, there is little knowledge about complexes of this type. Here, we report the synthesis of paramagnetic bidentate polypyridyl-ligated Ni halide and aryl complexes through elementary reactions proposed in catalytic cycles for C(sp 2 )–C(sp 3 ) bond formation. We investigate the ability of these complexes to undergo organometallic reactions that are relevant to C(sp 2 )–C(sp 3 ) coupling through stoichiometric studies and also explore their catalytic activity.

Homoleptic Aryl Complexes of Uranium (IV)

The synthesis and characterization of sterically unencumbered homoleptic organouranium aryl complexes containing U-C σ-bonds has been of interest to the chemical community for over 70 years. Reported herein are the first structurally characterized, sterically unencumbered homoleptic uranium (IV) aryl-ate species of the form [U(Ar) 6 ] 2- (Ar=Ph, p-tolyl, p-Cl-Ph). Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy and computational studies provide insight into electronic structure and bonding interactions in the U-C σ-bond across this series of complexes. Overall, these studies solve a decades-long challenge in synthetic uranium chemistry, enabling new insight into electronic structure and bonding in organouranium complexes.

Hot Branching Dynamics in a Light-Harvesting Iron Carbene Complex Revealed by Ultrafast X-ray Emission Spectroscopy

Iron N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes have received a great deal of attention recently because of their growing potential as light sensitizers or photocatalysts. Here, we present a sub-ps X-ray spectroscopy study of an Fe II NHC complex that identifies absorption. Excited molecules relax back to the ground state along two pathways: After population of a hot 3 MLCT state, from the initially excited 1 MLCT state, 30 % of the molecules undergo ultrafast (150 fs) relaxation to the 3 MC state, in comand quantifies the states involved in the deactivation cascade after light petition with vibrational relaxation and cooling to the relaxed 3 MLCT state. The relaxed 3 MLCT state then decays much more slowly (7.6 ps) to the 3 MC state. The 3 MC state is rapidly (2.2 ps) deactivated to the ground state. The 5 MC state is not involved in the deactivation pathway. The ultrafast partial deactivation of the 3 MLCT state constitutes a loss channel from the point of view of photochemical efficiency and highlights the necessity to screen transition-metal complexes for similar ultrafast decays to optimize photochemical performance.

A Dicopper Platform that Stabilizes the Formation of Pentanuclear Coinage Metal Hydride Complexes

Abstract Reduction of a dicopper(II) bis(hydroxide) complex with silanes in the presence of external copper or silver cations results in the formation of multinuclear hydride clusters, which were characterized by a variety of NMR spectroscopic experiments and X‐ray crystallography. In particular, the pentanuclear complexes adopt an unusual planar “bow tie” configuration. The copper hydride complexes are efficient catalysts for the dehydrogenation of formic acid to H 2 and CO 2 .

Synthesis, Electronic Structure, and Reactivity of a Planar Four–Coordinate, Cobalt–Imido Complex

A four-coordinate cobalt imido complex, ( tBu mPNP)Co=NMes ( tBu mPNP = modified PNP pincer ligand) has been synthesized from addition of 2,4,6-trimethylphenylazide (Mes–N 3 ) to the corresponding dinitrogen complex. The solid-state structure determined by X-ray diffraction established a rare, idealized planar geometry with a Co=N bond distance of 1.716(2) Å. Magnetic measurements revealed an S = 1 ground state with CAS-SCF calculations supporting radical character on the imide nitrogen. Here, thermolysis of the cobalt-imido compound induced selective insertion of the imido group into a Co–P bond and yielded a three-coordinate cobalt complex with a distorted T-shaped geometry. Transition state analysis conducted with DFT calculations established the thermodynamic stability of the P–N coupled product and provided insight into the exclusive selectivity.

Bimetallic Copper/Ruthenium/Osmium Complexes: Observation of Conformational Differences Between the Solution Phase and Solid State by Atomic Pair Distribution Function Analysis

High-energy X-ray scattering and pair distribution function analysis (HEXS/PDF) is a powerful method to reveal the structure of materials lacking long-range order, but is underutilized for molecular complexes in solution. Here we demonstrate the application of HEXS/PDF with 0.26 Å resolution to uncover the solution structure of five bimetallic Cu I /Ru II /Os II complexes. HEXS/PDF of each complex in acetonitrile solution confirms the pairwise distances in the local coordination sphere of each metal center as well as the metal...metal distances separated by over 12 Å. The metal…metal distance detected in solution is compared with that from the crystal structure and molecular models to confirm that distortions to the metal bridging ligand are unique to the solid state. This work presents the first example of observing sub-Ångström conformational differences by direct comparison of solution phase and solid-state structures and shows the potential for HEXS/PDF in the determination of solution structure of single molecules.

Single‐Crystal to Single‐Crystal Transformations: Stepwise CO 2 Insertions into Bridging Hydrides of [(NHC)CuH] 2 Complexes

Abstract Mechanistic studies of substrate insertion into dimeric [(NHC)CuH] 2 (NHC=N‐heterocyclic carbene) complexes with two bridging hydrides have been shown to require dimer dissociation to generate transient, highly reactive (NHC)Cu−H monomers in solution. Using single‐crystal to single‐crystal (SC‐SC) transformations, we discovered a new pathway of stepwise insertion of CO 2 into [(NHC)CuH] 2 without complete dissociation of the dimer. The first CO 2 insertion into dimeric [(IPr*OMe)CuH] 2 (IPr*OMe=N,N′‐bis(2,6‐bis(diphenylmethyl)‐4‐methoxy‐phenyl)imidazole‐2‐ylidene) produced a dicopper formate hydride [(IPr*OMe)Cu] 2 (μ‐1,3‐O 2 CH)(μ‐H). A second CO 2 insertion produced a dicopper bis(formate), [(IPr*OMe)Cu] 2 (μ‐1,3‐O 2 CH)(μ‐1,1‐O 2 CH), containing two different bonding modes of the bridging formate. These dicopper formate complexes are inaccessible from solution reactions since the dicopper core cleanly ruptures to monomeric complexes when dissolved in a solvent.

Divergent Stabilities of Tetravalent Cerium, Uranium, and Neptunium Imidophosphorane Complexes

The study of the redox chemistry of mid-actinides (U–Pu) has historically relied on cerium as a model, due to the accessibility of trivalent and tetravalent oxidation states for these ions. Recently, dramatic shifts of lanthanide 4+/3+ non-aqueous redox couples have been established within a homoleptic imidophosphorane ligand framework. Herein we extend the chemistry of the imidophosphorane ligand (NPC=[N=P t Bu(pyrr) 2 ] – ; pyrr=pyrrolidinyl) to tetrahomoleptic NPC complexes of neptunium and cerium (1-M, 2-M, M=Np, Ce) and present comparative structural, electrochemical, and theoretical studies of these complexes. Large cathodic shifts in the M 4+/3+ (M=Ce, U, Np) couples underpin the stabilization of higher metal oxidation states owing to the strongly donating nature of the NPC ligands, providing access to the U 5+/4+ , U 6+/5+ , and to an unprecedented, well-behaved Np 5+/4+ redox couple. Furthermore, the differences in the chemical redox properties of the U vs. Ce and Np complexes are rationalized based on their redox potentials, degree of structural rearrangement upon reduction/oxidation, relative molecular orbital energies, and orbital composition analyses employing density functional theory.

Reversible CO 2 Hydrogenation, Neutron Crystallography, and Hydride Reactivity of a Triiridium Heptahydride Complex

Here, the authors report the structure, reactivity, and catalytic utility of a triiridium complex, [Ir 3 H 6 (μ 3 -H)(PN) 3 ] 2+ (2-H, PN = (2-pyridyl)CH 2 PBu t 2 ). Despite its unusual stability to unsaturated organics, electrophiles, and even CF 3 SO 3 D, they find that complex 2-H catalyzes hydrogenation of CO 2 to formate (TON Ir = 9600) and reverse formic acid dehydrogenation (TON Ir = 54 400). The hydrogenation operates via a reactive intermediate [Ir 3 H 4 (μ-H) 4 (PN) 3 ] + (5). Neutron crystallography and DFT-supported neutron vibrational spectroscopy of 2-H reveal Ir─H bond lengths and elucidate the vibration modes within the Ir 3 H 7 core. Stoichiometric oxidation of 2-H produces four classes of iridium complexes of varied nuclearity and hydride structure: tetra- and pentanuclear clusters [Ir 3 H 6 (μ 3 -AuPPh 3 )(PN) 3 ] 2+ (2-Au) and [Ag{Ir 2 H 4 (μ-OAc)(PN) 2 } 2 ] 3+ (6) are generated using AuPPh 3 + and AgOAc, respectively. Further oxidation to class [Ir 2 H 3 (μ-X) 2 (PN) 2 ] + is possible with AgOAc, Hg(OAc) 2 , or I 2 . Finally, a TEMPO/HCl system completely oxidizes the hydrides and gives [Ir 2 Cl 4 (μ-Cl) 2 (PN) 2 ] (11).

Regioselective Gas–Phase n –Butane Transfer Dehydrogenation via Silica–Supported Pincer–Iridium Complexes

The production of olefins via on-purpose dehydrogenation of alkanes allows for a more efficient, selective and lower cost alternative to processes such as steam cracking. Silica-supported pincer-iridium complexes of the form [(≡SiO– R4 POCOP)Ir(CO)] ( R4 POCOP=κ 3 -C 6 H 3 -2,6-(OPR 2 ) 2 ) are effective for acceptorless alkane dehydrogenation, and have been shown stable up to 300 °C. However, while solution-phase analogues of such species have demonstrated high regioselectivity for terminal olefin production under transfer dehydrogenation conditions at or below 240 °C, in open systems at 300 °C, regioselectivity under acceptorless dehydrogenation conditions is consistently low. In this work, complexes [(≡SiO– tBu4 POCOP)Ir(CO)] (1) and [(≡SiO– iPr4 PCP)Ir(CO)] (2) were synthesized via immobilization of molecular precursors. These complexes were used for gas-phase butane transfer dehydrogenation using increasingly sterically demanding olefins, resulting in observed selectivities of up to 77 %. Finally, the results indicate that the active site is conserved upon immobilization.

Selective Synthesis of a Series of Isostructural M II Cu I Heterobimetallic Complexes Spontaneously Assembled by an Unsymmetrical Naphthyridine‐Based Ligand

Abstract Metal–metal cooperation is integral to the function of many enzymes and materials, and model complexes hold enormous potential for providing insights into the capabilities of analogous multimetallic cores. However, the selective synthesis of heterobimetallic complexes still presents a significant challenge, especially for systems that hold the metals in close proximity and feature open or reactive coordination sites for both metals. To address this issue, a rigid, naphthyridine‐based dinucleating ligand featuring distinct binding environments was synthesized. This ligand enables the selective synthesis of a series of M II Cu I bimetallic complexes (M=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn), in which each metal center exclusively occupies its preferred binding pocket, from simple chloride salts. The precision of this selectivity is evident from cyclic voltammetry, ESI‐MS and anomalous X‐ray diffraction measurements.

CO 2 Activation with Manganese Tricarbonyl Complexes through an H–Atom Responsive Benzimidazole Ligand

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of two manganese tricarbonyl complexes, Mn I (HL)(CO) 3 Br (1 a-Br) and Mn I (MeL)(CO) 3 Br (1 b-Br) (where HL=2-(2’-pyridyl)benzimidazole; MeL=1-methyl-2-(2’-pyridy)benzimidazole) and assayed their electrocatalytic properties for CO 2 reduction. A redox-active pyridine benzimidazole ancillary ligand in complex 1 a-Br displayed unique hydrogen atom transfer ability to facilitate electrocatalytic CO 2 conversion at a markedly lower reduction potential than that observed for 1 b-Br. Notably, a one-electron reduction of 1 a-Br yields a structurally characterized H-bonded binuclear Mn(I) adduct (2 a’) rather than the typically observed Mn(0)-Mn(0) dimer, suggesting a novel method for CO 2 activation. Furthermore, combining advanced electrochemical, spectroscopic, and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, we demonstrate the use of an H-atom responsive ligand may reveal an alternative, low-energy pathway for CO 2 activation by an earth-abundant metal complex catalyst.

Probing Noncovalent Interaction Strengths of Host-Guest Complexes Using Negative Ion Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Noncovalent interactions (NCIs) are crucial for the formation and stability of host-guest complexes, which have wide-ranging implications across various fields, including biology, chemistry, materials science, pharmaceuticals, and environmental science. However, since NCIs are relatively weak and sensitive to bulk perturbation, direct and accurate measurement of their absolute strength has always been a significant challenge. This concept article aims to demonstrate the gas-phase electrospray ionization (ESI)-negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) as a direct and precise technique to measure the absolute interaction strength, probe nature of NCIs, and reveal the electronic structural information for host-guest complexes. Here, our recent studies in investigating various host-guest complexes that involve various types of NCIs such as anion–π, (di)hydrogen bonding, charge-separated ionic interactions, are overviewed. Finally, a summary and outlook are provided for this field.

Differentiating Ligand Tailoring and Cation Incorporation as Strategies for Tuning Heterobimetallic Cerium Complexes

Tuning of redox-active complexes featuring metals with high coordination numbers by incorporation of secondary redox-inactive cations has received far less attention than it deserves. Here, appending moderate steric bulk to a tripodal ligand framework has been tested for its influence on secondary-cation-driven structural and electrochemical tuning of cerium, a lanthanide that tends to adopt high coordination numbers. A quasi -C 3 -symmetric cerium(III) complex denoted [Ce] has been prepared that features pendant benzyloxy groups, and this work demonstrates that this species offers a site capable of binding single Na + or Ca 2+ ions. Electrochemical and UV-visible spectroscopic studies reveal equilibrium binding affinity of [Ce] for Na + in acetonitrile solvent, contrasting with tight binding of all cations in all other previously studied systems of this type. The modulated cation binding can be attributed to the bulky benzyloxy groups, which impact the thermodynamics of cation binding but do not impede the formation of cerium centers with coordination number 8 upon binding of either Na + or Ca2 + . Finally, the Ce(IV/III) reduction potential was found to be tunable under the equilibrium binding conditions, highlighting the potentially significant role that controlled structural changes can play in modulating the solution properties of heterobimetallic complexes.
