Millimeter wave propagation modeling of inhomogeneous rain media for satellite communications systems

A theoretical propagation model that represents the scattering properties of an inhomogeneous rain often found on a satellite communications link is presented. The model includes the scattering effects of an arbitrary distribution of particle type (rain or ice), particle shape, particle size, and particle orientation within a given rain cell. An associated rain propagation prediction program predicts attenuation, isolation and phase shift as a function of ground rain rate. A frequency independent synthetic storm algorithm is presented that models nonuniform rain rates present on a satellite link. Antenna effects are included along with a discussion of rain reciprocity. The model is verified using the latest available multiple frequency data from the CTS and COMSTAR satellites. The data covers a wide range of frequencies, elevation angles, and ground site locations.

Computer display and manipulation of biological molecules

This paper describes a computer model that was designed to investigate the conformation of molecules, macromolecules and subsequent complexes. Utilizing an advanced 3-D dynamic computer display system, the model is sufficiently versatile to accommodate a large variety of molecular input and to generate data for multiple purposes such as visual representation of conformational changes, and calculation of conformation and interaction energy. Molecules can be built on the basis of several levels of information. These include the specification of atomic coordinates and connectivities and the grouping of building blocks and duplicated substructures using symmetry rules found in crystals and polymers such as proteins and nucleic acids. Called AIMS (Ames Interactive Molecular modeling System), the model is now being used to study pre-biotic molecular evolution toward life.

Multiple-spacecraft and correlated riometer study of magnetospheric substorm phenomena

Double-spacecraft observations presented suggest that growth phase phenomena are widespread in the outer magnetosphere and can occur simultaneously at nightside locations 4-5 hours apart in local time. Evidence is also adduced from multiple-spacecraft data and comprehensive magnetometer and riometer data against the concept that growth phase features are not generally due to substorm activity at other locations in the auroral or polar regions. A close relationship is noted between putative energy input to the magnetosphere and the sensitive response of the magnetic field and energetic particles at pre- and near-midnight geostationary orbit locations. This relationship is shown explicitly for the cases of three event periods. Data are also presented which suggest that growth phase features at synchronous orbit can be strictly controlled by IMF orientations.

Multiple muons of conventional and exotic origin in DUMAND

A first summary of results from a theoretical analysis, based on hadron - muon cascade calculations, that yield relative intensities of very high energy multiple muons originating from ultra high energy interactions initiated by primary protons and iron nuclei in the atmosphere, under consideration of normal as well as direct and exotic production channels is presented. Lateral density distributions and target diagrams will be presented which show that only very large detectors, such as DUMAND, will be able to record multiple muons of conventional origin reliably. This, however, is a prerequisite for any primary mass determination based on multiple muon data.

The structure of a microburst - As observed by ground-based and airborne Doppler radar

Attention is given to the microburst observed near Denver, CO, on June 29, 1982, in the course of the Joint Airport Weather Study (JAWS). The JAWS ground radar network was specifically established to furnish high spatial and temporal resolution multiple Doppler data for microburst observations. The data, which were collected from directly above the microburst, permitted direct measurements of vertical velocities to be made. P-3 surveillance aircraft Doppler data was also available for this microburst, whose considerable complexity is noted.

The GOES-G and -H spacecraft design

The design of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) uses newer technology and has expanded capability relative to the predecessor GOES series of satellites. The satellite directly transmits day and night observations of hemispheric-scale weather, hurricanes, and other more localized severe storms and relays processed high-resolution observation data along with weather facsimile (WEFAX) data. Weather observations are generated in the visible and infrared spin scan radiometer (VISSR) atmospheric sounder (VAS). The VAS performs visible and infrared imaging as well as multispectral imaging (MSI) and temperature sounding of the atmosphere. The satellite provides direct interrogation and simultaneous relay transmission between the command data acquisition station (CDAS) and the multiple, widely dispersed data collection platforms (DCP). The satellites also monitor the condition of the earth's magnetic field, energetic particle flux, and X-ray emissions from the sun. The satellite performs all communications functions by means of a multifunction communications system that operates on S-band and uhf frequencies at rates varying from 100 bit/s to 28 megabit/s. An experimental capability for the detection of the emergency locator transmitter beacons is included in the GOES-GH design as a part of the international satellite-aided search and rescue system.

The Tasseled Cap de-mystified

The fundamental concepts on which the Tasseled Cap transformations of MSS and TM data are based - particularly the identification of inherent data structures - are explained and discussed. Emphasis on the structures present in data from any given sensor, which are themselves the expression of physical characteristics of scene classes, provides a number of advantages, including (a) reduction in data volume with minimal information loss; (b) spectral features which can be applied, without re-definition or adjustment, to any data set for a given sensor; (c) spectral features which can be directly associated with important physical parameters; and (d) easier integration of data from multiple sensors.

Characterization of good teleoperators - What aptitudes, interests, and experience correlate with measures of teleoperator performance

The use of aptitude tests and questionnaries to evaluate an individuals aptitude for teleoperation is studied. The Raven Progressive Matrices Test and Differential Aptitude Tests, and a 16-item questionnaire for assessing the subject's interests, academic background, and previous experience are described. The Proto-Flight Manipulator Arm, cameras, console, hand controller, and task board utilized by the 17 engineers are examined. The correlation between aptitude scores and questionnaire responses, and operator performance is investigated. Multiple regression data reveal that the eight predictor variables are not individually significant for evaluating operator performance; however, the complete test battery is applicable for predicting 49 percent of subject variance on the criterion task.

Line plotting program using DI-3000/Grafmaker routines

A line plotting program has been developed using the DI-3000 graphics libraries and incorporates Grafmaker subroutines. The program allows multiple lines on a frame and multiple frames per run. Options such as automatic scaling, linear or single-cycle log graphs, and plot text such as titles, legends and axis labels are incorporated in the program. Greek and other fonts can be used in the plot text as well as upper and lower case text. Plot inputs are specified through a control file. The program also allows display of multiple independent data sets on a single graph.

Petri net model for analysis of concurrently processed complex algorithms

This paper presents a Petri-net model suitable for analyzing the concurrent processing of computationally complex algorithms. The decomposed operations are to be processed in a multiple processor, data driven architecture. Of particular interest is the application of the model to both the description of the data/control flow of a particular algorithm, and to the general specification of the data driven architecture. A candidate architecture is also presented.

DATAC bus monitor

The Digital Autonomous Terminal Access Communications (DATAC) bus is a multiple transmitter data bus developed to interconnect various aircraft systems. A typical DATAC bus installation for the NASA B-737 aircraft is shown. A bus monitor unit was developed for the DATAC data bus. The bus monitor unit consists of two systems: A Zilog Z8002 based S100 bus microcomputer system that connects to a DATAC terminal and receives data appearing on the bus, and an IMB PC-compatible computer used to display and interpret that data. Test results of the existing bus monitor have indicated areas for improvement. The most obvious improvement is to increase the speed of the data transfers between the S100 and the MS-DOS systems.

State-space formulation of multi-shaker modal analysis

As modal testing techniques have improved in recent years, the demands placed on the accuracy of modal test results have increased. This paper describes a new multi-input, multi-output modal parameter estimation algorithm suitable for the identification of reduced-order models of structures. The method described is a frequency-domain method based on excitation and response spectra. The principal features of the algorithm are: (1) applicability to general linear, time-invariant systems, (2) direct use of multiple input and multiple response data, (3) identification of reduced-order models with minimum user interaction through the use of two automatic model-reduction techniques, (4) identification of a consistent set of modal parameters through the use of numerically stable least-squares techniques, and (5) complete user documentation.

Non-intrusive Space Shuttle Main Engine nozzle exit diagnostics

The results of a conceptual design study on the feasibility of nonintrusive optical diagnostics have shown that UV laser-excited Raman scattering can furnish reliable and accurate temperature and multiple-species data for the Space Shuttle Main Engine's exhaust flow. Enhanced OH flow tagging by UV photodissociation of H2O was used in velocity measurements; a time-delayed pulsed dye laser beam at 308 nm excites fluorescence from OH, and the location of the convected enhanced OH zone is measured with an optical multichannel detector.

Scheduling Tasks In Parallel Processing

Algorithms sought to minimize time and cost of computation. Report describes research on scheduling of computations tasks in system of multiple identical data processors operating in parallel. Computational intractability requires use of suboptimal heuristic algorithms. First algorithm called "list heuristic", variation of classical list scheduling. Second algorithm called "cluster heuristic" applied to tightly coupled tasks and consists of four phases. Third algorithm called "exchange heuristic", iterative-improvement algorithm beginning with initial feasible assignment of tasks to processors and periods of time. Fourth algorithm is iterative one for optimal assignment of tasks and based on concept called "simulated annealing" because of mathematical resemblance to aspects of physical annealing processes.
