Emissivity measurements of CuCrZr alloy

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) heavy-ion accelerator, in user operation since 2022, produces rare isotope beams via interactions of high-intensity stable ion beams with a graphite production target. Approximately 20–40% of the primary beam power is deposited in the target, while the remaining 60–80% is absorbed by the beam dump. The minichannel beam dump (MCBD), currently operated at 20 kW and designed for operation up to 50 kW, uses CuCrZr alloy absorber plates. Thermal validation and thermal cycling tests of the MCBD were conducted at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Pennsylvania State University. Temperature measurements were obtained from an infrared (IR) camera. Since accurate temperature determination requires reliable emissivity values, the emissivity of CuCrZr was measured using the IR camera validated against thermocouple reference temperatures up to approximately 650 °C. The measurements were conducted under a vacuum level of approximately 10 -5 torr to minimize emissivity variations due to surface oxidation. The emissivity of CuCrZr was determined to be 0.057 ± 0.009 using a constant fit to the measured data over the surface temperature range from 100–650 °C.

Time evolution of a pumped molecular magnet—A time-resolved inelastic neutron scattering study

Introducing an experimental technique of time-resolved inelastic neutron scattering (TRINS), we explore the time-dependent effects of resonant pulsed microwaves on the molecular magnet Cr 8 F 8 Piv 16 . The octagonal rings of magnetic Cr 3+ atoms with antiferromagnetic interactions form a singlet ground state with a weakly split triplet of excitations at 0.8 meV. A 4.6 tesla field was applied to tune the splitting between two members of the triplet excited level |1$\rangle$ ↔ |2$\rangle$ to resonance with 105 GHz (0.434 meV) microwaves. The time-dependent occupations of the ground state |0$\rangle$, lower lying levels |1$\rangle$ and |2$\rangle$, and higher energy states |λ ≥ 3$\rangle$ were extracted during and after 20 s long microwave pulses incident along the (101) direction of a Cr 8 F 8 Piv 16 crystal held at 1.9 K. At significantly elevated spin temperatures, we found underpopulation relative to thermal equilibrium of |2$\rangle$ and spin-lattice thermalization time scales ranging from 1.6(2) s to 5.7(2) s depending on the power level. This contrasts with the relaxation time τ 1 (T → 0) = 27(5) 𝛍 s inferred for |2$\rangle$ from in situ Electron Spin Resonance measurements. By probing a broad range of excited states during intense microwave pumping, TRINS thus provides a first view of long lived excited states in a molecular antiferromagnet.

Optimization of the FRIB beam dump: a hybrid genetic algorithm and reinforcement learning approach

The operational envelope of high-power-density systems, such as particle accelerators and advanced nuclear energy systems, is critically constrained by the need to manage extreme thermal loads. To address this, we present a novel hybrid optimization framework combining a genetic algorithm (GA) with a soft actor-critic (SAC) deep reinforcement learning agent. This framework was applied to a practical high-heat-flux problem: redesigning the beam dump at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) for a power upgrade from 20 kW to 50 kW. The resulting design, validated by three-dimensional conjugate heat transfer simulations, suppresses hazardous hot spots and yields a markedly more uniform temperature distribution. This provides a robust operating margin, increasing the average power-handling capability by 72% relative to the current design, demonstrating the framework’s potential to solve complex thermal management challenges in both accelerator technology and advanced nuclear systems.

A Chemist’s Guide to Solid-State Qubits: Diamond Color Centers as Embedded Vacancy-Centered Molecules

Diamond point defects or color centers are at the crux of solid-state quantum technology applications, from computing to sensing. Modeling molecular qubits has advanced by leaps and bounds mainly due to the advanced quantum mechanical (QM) tools in the arsenal of quantum chemists for modeling (isolated) molecular systems, which should be easily translatable for analogous systems in the solid state. Here, we simulate a series of diamond defects: a carbon vacancy (V C ) and second row substitutions that are adjacent to a V C or D C V C , with D = B, N, and O, to evaluate their magnetic and optical properties. We applied molecular orbital principles, an embedded cluster method, and a multiconfigurational QM theory to computationally characterize the above-mentioned defects for a multitude of spin, charge, and excited states. Our computational approach delivered high-quality QM insights that compare well with experiments. Furthermore, with this framework, we confirm the spin-triplets B C V C – and O C V C 0 to be analogous to N C V C – , with calculated bright transitions that respectively correspond to UV (3.80 eV) and blue (2.65 eV) light absorption and emission lifetimes (τ) of 2.3 and 5.6 ns, which are higher in energy and more short-lived (and thus brighter) than that for N C V C – : green (2.26 eV), τ = 9.5 ns.

Iron surface corrosion in supercritical CO2 at atomic scale investigated by molecular dynamics simulations

Understanding the corrosion behavior of steels in supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) is essential for ensuring the safe application of S-CO2 as a heat-transfer fluid in high-temperature energy systems, including advanced nuclear reactors. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using ReaxFF potential are performed to explore the atomic-scale corrosion mechanisms of body-centered cubic iron (BCC-Fe) in S-CO2. The results show that CO2 molecules in S-CO2 decompose at the Fe surface, generating free C and O atoms that form Fe-C and Fe-O bonds and subsequently produce oxides and carbides. Concurrently, Fe atoms dissolve from the surface and diffuse into the S-CO2 region, resulting in interdiffusion of Fe, C and O atoms at the interface. The corrosion-layer thickness calculations show that high pressure and temperature induced by S-CO2 have stronger effects than surface orientation on the corrosion process. In addition, surface Fe atoms undergo substantial displacement under S-CO2 exposure, further accelerating corrosion. When a radiation-induced void is introduced near the Fe surface, the corrosion is enhanced. The void-matrix interface expands the reaction surface area and simultaneously induces corrosion reactions inside the bulk, resulting in a deeper penetration of C and O and thicker corrosion layers. All these results indicate that high-temperature, high-pressure and radiation-induced voids can seriously affect the corrosion of Fe in S-CO2, and must be considered to better use S-CO2 in nuclear facilities.

Heterogeneous Solid Electrolyte Interphase Interactions Dictate Interface Instability in Sodium Metal Electrodes

Sodium (Na) metal batteries have attracted recent attention due to their low cost and high abundance of Na. However, the advancement of Na metal batteries is impeded due to key challenges such as dendrite growth, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) fracture, and low Coulombic efficiency. This study examines the coupled electro‐chemo‐mechanical interactions governing the electrodeposition stability and morphological evolution at the Na/electrolyte interface. The SEI heterogeneities influence transport and reaction kinetics leading to the formation of current and stress hotspots during Na plating. Further, it is demonstrated that the heterogeneity‐induced Na metal evolution and its influence on the stress distribution critically affect the mechanical overpotential, contributing to a faster SEI failure. The analysis reveals three distinct failure mechanisms—mechanical, transport, and kinetic—that govern the onset of instabilities at the interface. Finally, a comprehensive comparative study of SEI failure in Na and lithium (Li) metal anodes illustrates that the electrochemical and mechanical characteristics of the SEI are crucial in tailoring the anode morphology and interface stability. This work delineates mechanistic stability regimes cognizant of the SEI attributes and underlying failure modes and offers important guidelines for the design of artificial SEI layers for stable Na metal electrodes.

Evaluation of high-temperature properties of binary, eutectic Ni-X alloys (X = B, Ca, Ce, La, Y, Zr)

We investigated the high-temperature behavior of binary eutectic nickel-base alloys with low-solubility elements, towards developing alloys with new combinations of structural and functional (e.g. thermal or corrosion) properties. Based on thermodynamic screening, we cast binary near-eutectic Ni-B, Ni-Ca, Ni-Ce, Ni-La, Ni-Y, and Ni-Zr alloys and characterized their microstructure and high-temperature properties. All alloys (except Ni-Ca) contain a fine eutectic microstructure, containing submicron alternating lamellae of γ-Ni and continuous intermetallic phases. The eutectic microstructure did not significantly coarsen at 700°C (except for Ni-B), but measurably coarsened in all alloys at 900°C, most quickly in Ni-B, followed by Ni-Ce, Ni-La, Ni-Y, and Ni-Zr. Coarsening in these alloys occurs by fault migration; diffusion within the intermetallic, and its interfacial energy, likely influence coarsening kinetics. At room-temperature, all alloys possess negligible ductility due to the continuous, brittle intermetallic. At 700 and 900°C, the Ni-Zr alloy showed the best combination of strength and ductility. Oxidation experiments at 900°C on Ni-Zr and Ni-Ce revealed heavy internal oxidation of the continuous intermetallic phase. Overall, the Ni-Zr alloy showed good high-temperature coarsening resistance and strength, though ductility and oxidation resistance require improvement for use in structural applications. Possible routes for improving alloy properties via additive manufacturing are discussed.

Final Report: A Multi-Channel Fusion Product

The goal of this project was to measure charged fusion products from the d(d,p)t reaction in MAST-U plasmas as a function of time and position with good energy resolution using a system of up to six charged particle detectors. The data from this new diagnostic will make it possible to determine the neutral beam ion density profile as a function of R, z, and t with reduced model dependency and contribute new information to a global analysis of fast ion diagnostic data needed for the determination of the fast ion distribution function (velocity space tomography).

Cost-effective valorization of 2,3-butanediol to high-value chemicals and jet fuel

Here, this work outlines an optimized process for converting 2,3-butanediol (BDO) into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and C4 chemicals. BDO is reactively separated from fermentation broth by forming dioxolanes, which are converted to isobutyraldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and 1,3-butadiene. These intermediates are reduced and dehydrated over Cu/ZSM-5 to form alkenes, which can be oligomerized and hydrotreated to jet-range alkanes. Previous BDO-dioxolane-alkene processes are limited by the requirement for a continuous aldehyde source for dioxolane formation. Brønsted acidic zeolites catalyze dioxolane deacetalization to form isobutyraldehyde and MEK in a >2:1 molar ratio, providing an internal, recyclable aldehyde source. Dioxolane formation optimization was performed to achieve >95% dioxolane yields over Amberlyst-15 and minimize isobutyraldehyde recycle. The overall BDO-dioxolane-fuel process yields an alkane mixture that enables at least a 50% v/v blend with Jet-A. Techno-economic analyses and life cycle assessments for this BDO-dioxolane-fuel process yield scenarios with <$2.50 per gallon gas equivalent and >58% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Oceanic fronts shape hemispheric contrasts in polar stratospheric extremes

Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (SSWs) and Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSCs) exhibit striking inter-hemispheric asymmetries: SSWs are frequent in the Arctic but rare in the Antarctic, while PSCs are more persistent in the Antarctic. Although land–sea thermal contrast and orography (LSCO) have been traditionally invoked to explain these asymmetries, here we show using semi-idealized model experiments that even though LSCO strongly impacts the mean state of SSWs and PSCs, it alone cannot fully account for the observed differences. Using model experiments, we reveal that midlatitude oceanic sea surface temperature (SST) fronts represent a crucial supporting additional driver of the hemispheric stratospheric differences. Like LSCO, SST fronts enhance stratospheric convergence of resolved waves, strengthening the Brewer–Dobson Circulation and inducing high-latitude adiabatic warming. This warming significantly enhances Arctic SSW frequency and strongly suppresses PSC formation. Sub-grid-scale non–resolved wave forcing modulates the stratospheric resolved waves effect. The oceanic impact is dominated by North Pacific SST fronts. Our results highlight the indispensable role of SST fronts in shaping Arctic–Antarctic asymmetries in stratospheric dynamics and associated extremes.

Spectroscopic Demarcation of Emergent Photons and Spinons in a Dipolar-Octupolar Quantum Spin Liquid

The identification of fractionalized excitations in quantum spin liquids (QSLs) remains a central challenge in condensed matter physics. In dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlores, such as Ce 2⁢ Zr 2 ⁢O 7 , the candidate 𝜋-flux quantum spin ice (QSI) state is predicted to host both gapless emergent photons and a continuum of spinons. However, resolving these modes at zero field is complicated by their spectral overlap and the presence of nonmagnetic scattering near zero energy. Here, in this study, we report neutron scattering experiments on Ce 2 ⁢Zr 2 ⁢O 7 under a magnetic field along the [1, 1, 1] direction. In contrast to previous unpolarized studies at zero field that relied on high-temperature subtraction, we use a same-temperature high-field subtraction protocol to isolate the photon and spinon modes. Leveraging the selective coupling of the magnetic field to the dipolar degrees of freedom, we demonstrate the spectroscopic demarcation of these excitations. We observe that weak fields (≈ 0.15 T) suppress the low-energy photon weight while leaving the high-energy spinon continuum robust, albeit hardened. Our results, supported by gauge mean-field theory and exact diagonalization calculations, provide strong evidence for the 𝜋-flux QSI state and introduce a powerful field-tuning protocol for investigating DO-QSLs.

Massive neutrinos and interacting dark matter look alike through the lens of lensing

Here, we demonstrate that the suppression in the lensing power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) caused by massive neutrinos can be mimicked by dark matter-baryon interactions at the precision of next-generation CMB experiments. Thus, a determination of neutrino masses from the CMB lensing power spectrum may be compromised. We illustrate the degeneracy for a dark matter-proton cross section ∝ $v$ –4 , which arises in the t-channel exchange of an ultralight mediator in the nonrelativistic limit.

Quantum Circuits for the Preparation of Spin Eigenfunctions on Quantum Computers

The application of quantum algorithms to the study of many-particle quantum systems requires the ability to prepare wave functions that are relevant in the behavior of the system under study. Hamiltonian symmetries are important instruments used to classify relevant many-particle wave functions and to improve the efficiency of numerical simulations. In this work, quantum circuits for the exact and approximate preparation of total spin eigenfunctions on quantum computers are presented. Two different strategies are discussed and compared: exact recursive construction of total spin eigenfunctions based on the addition theorem of angular momentum, and heuristic approximation of total spin eigenfunctions based on the variational optimization of a suitable cost function. The construction of these quantum circuits is illustrated in detail, and the preparation of total spin eigenfunctions is demonstrated on IBM quantum devices, focusing on three- and five-spin systems on graphs with triangle connectivity.

Effectively Considering the Distribution System in Integrated Resource Plans

While electricity planning practices vary by state and utility based on utility type and market structure, integrated resource planning (IRP) remains a prominent vehicle — even in states with centrally-organized wholesale electricity markets. IRP focuses on meeting forecasted long-term electricity needs. Typically, utilities have not considered impacts of design and operation of the low-voltage distribution network in IRP. With advanced capabilities of grid-edge technologies to generate and store electricity and provide load flexibility, and large utility investments in distribution systems, it's increasingly important to consider at least some distribution planning elements in IRP. This report considers the value proposition for doing so, such as reducing utility costs through resource co-optimization and strategic siting of grid-edge resources, and idenfities the most important touchpoints between planning for bulk power and distribution systems and provide a range of tactics for integrating these two processes.
