A Unified Data-Driven Approach for Programming In Situ Analysis and Visualization: An Interim Report of Sandia Sub-Team Contributions

As we look ahead to next generation high performance computing platforms, the placement and movement of data is becoming the key-limiting factor on both performance and energy efficiency. Furthermore, the increased quantities of data the systems are capable of generating, in conjunction with the insufficient rate of improvements in the supporting I/0 infrastructure, is forcing applications away from the off-line post-processing of data towards techniques based on in ,situ analysis and visualization. Together, these challenges are shaping how we will both design and develop effective, performant and energy-efficient software. In particular, the challenges highlight the need for data and data-centric operations to be fundamental in the reasoning about, and optimization of, scientific workflows on extreme-scale architectures.

Early Application Results on Pre-exascale Architecture with Analysis of Performance Challenges and Projections (Milestone PM-AD-1080 WBS 2.2)

This Exascale Computing Project (ECP) Milestone Report summarizes the status of all 30 ECP Applications Development (AD) sub-projects at the end of FY19. In August and September of 2019, a comprehensive assessment of AD projects was conducted jointly by the ECP leadership and a team of external subject matter experts. Reviews took place in person over five days-two at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and three at Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago. The review committees were tasked with evaluating each sub-project's progress in porting their code(s) to current multi-GPU architectures considered precursors to planned exascale machines. This includes characterizing which modules have been ported to multi-accelerator nodes, initial performance analyses, the status of software integration, and a current vision of successes, obstacles, and next steps. As such this report contains not only an accurate snapshot of each sub-project's current status, but also represents an unprecedentedly broad account of experiences porting large scientific applications to next-generation HPC architectures.

A Test Bed for Evaluating Frequency Estimation Algorithms in Synthetic Inertia Control: User Manual

As penetration of converter interfaced generators (CIGs) increases, the need for CIG frequency control participation increases. Traditionally, research in this area has been performed using positive sequence simulation software, which provides voltage magnitude and phase measurements, but not point-on-wave (POW) measurements. This means that the effect of frequency estimation algorithms cannot be accurately modeled, especially when the voltage waveform is distorted by faults or load connection events. This report serves as a user manual for an electromagnetic transient simulation testbed, which allows for accurate modeling of frequency estimation and control techniques.

The Demonstration of Power over Ethernet (PoE) Technologies in Commercial and Institutional Buildings

Power over Ethernet (PoE) technologies are currently ubiquitous in offices in the form of phones, access points, and IP security cameras. They are systems that are familiar to and managed by on-site IT staff. As low voltage DC-power capabilities have increased with the advancement of IT network switches within offices, PoE devices are now being integrated across additional building systems, including lighting, computers, and HVAC controls. The connection of PoE devices to network switches offers the opportunity for energy monitoring and management to be performed through IT network management software. Data and results from technology validations of PoE equipment remain very limited. This lack of information hinders expansion of PoE as an energy management strategy as its benefits and challenges have been insufficiently quantified in real-world scenarios. This final report presents the findings of a DOE/State of Minnesota-funded project that demonstrated and assessed the energy and non-energy benefits of Power over Ethernet (PoE) technologies at six sites: two offices, three schools, and a hotel. The goals of the demonstrations were to: (1) assess the receptiveness of commercial and institutional markets to these new technologies, (2) demonstrate the feasibility of PoE technologies within standard design/construction practices and commercial codes, (3) assess the energy and cost savings opportunities of these technologies, (4) provide energy management opportunities where not typically available, and (5) formulate approaches to spur adoption of these technologies in the marketplace.

The SAS4A/SASSYS-1 Version 5.8 Safety Analysis Code System

SAS4A/SASSYS-1 is a software simulation tool used to perform deterministic analysis of anticipated events as well as design basis and beyond design basis accidents for advanced nuclear reactors. Detailed, mechanistic models of steady-state and transient thermal, hydraulic, kinetic, and mechanical phenomena are employed to describe the response of the reactor core, the reactor primary and secondary coolant loops, the reactor control and protection systems, and the balance-of-plant to accidents caused by changes in coolant flow, loss of heat rejection, or reactivity insertion. The consequences of single and double-fault accidents can be modeled, including fuel and coolant heating, fuel and cladding mechanical behavior, core reactivity feedbacks, coolant loop performance including natural circulation, and decay heat removal. Analyses are typically terminated upon demonstration of reactor and plant shutdown to permanently coolable conditions, or upon violation of design basis margins. The objective of the analysis is to quantify accident consequences as measured by the transient behavior of system performance parameters, such as fuel and cladding temperatures, reactivity, and cladding strain. Originally developed for analysis of sodium cooled reactors with oxide fuel clad by stainless steel, the models were subsequently extended and specialized to metallic fuel clad with advanced alloys and to several other coolant options, including lead, LBE, and water.

One Earth Energy Static and Dynamic Reservoir Modeling

This report presents the static and dynamic reservoir modeling conducted for the CarbonSAFE Phase III Illinois Storage Corridor project to assess the feasibility of commercial-scale CO 2 storage in the Mt. Simon Sandstone at the One Earth Energy (OEE) site in McLean County, Illinois. Three-dimensional geocellular models of the Mt. Simon storage complex were developed in Petrel ® by integrating petrophysical log data, core analyses, and seismic surveys from the OEE #1 stratigraphic test well and two nearby wells, with multiple model versions created as new data became available. Dynamic reservoir simulations, performed using Landmark's Nexus software, progressed through three phases (preliminary, sensitivity, and UIC Class VI permit studies) evaluating injection scenarios across varying rates, well orientations, permeability models, and multi-well configurations. Results demonstrate that commercial-scale storage is feasible: three injection wells spaced approximately one mile apart can store a total of 90 million tonnes of CO 2 over 20 years, producing a combined plume with an equivalent radius of 3.2 miles and a maximum pressure-front-defined Area of Review of 178 mi 2 at the end of injection that diminishes to 34 mi 2 after 50 years of post-injection monitoring. Sensitivity analyses indicate that a 20% change in porosity or permeability yields approximately a 7% change in AoR radius, and that perforating the high-permeability arkosic zone minimizes the pressure front compared to injection in the upper Mt. Simon Sandstone.

High-Voltage DC MULTI-terminal SIMulation (HVDC MULTISIM): Technical Program Summary

Expansion of the power grid in the USA is essential to fulfilling the rising energy demand of the country. In particular, the transmission grid, a network of electrical energy corridors that enable the flow of large amounts of energy from the point of generation to the point of consumption, needs significant expansion to cater to this growth of electrification. The current infrastructure is also dated, and any new transmission corridor should be based on a vision of building a modern infrastructure that is futureproof. High voltage DC (HVDC) transmission technology falls in this category: it is the most economical way to build large transmission lines and relies on sophisticated electronics and flexible controls, rather than just passive components like switchgear and transformers. This project is aimed at establishing the technical and economic feasibility of a network of HVDC lines that are interconnected to form a multi-terminal DC network. HVDC transmission is not a new technology and United States has a number of such lines; however, these are point to point transmissions and do not form a DC grid. Modeling and analyzing DC grids is challenging since there are no established modeling tools and the traditional ways of modeling AC grids fall short of providing the fidelity required the fast dynamics of the DC grid. This project aims to build a software-in-the-loop simulator for a multi-terminal HVDC grid, called MULTISIM and, establish new control and protection algorithms to operate such a connected DC system. NLR, a key partner, established the core framework of the MULTISIM simulator and validated its functionality. The GE Vernova team, created a full-scale model of a four-terminal HVDC network using PSCAD (Power Systems Computer Aided Design) software and established the baseline performance of the system during normal and fault operation. The project was started on 10/12024 with a kick-off meeting held on 12/11/2024 and ran through two quarters till termination. All the tasks, milestones and deliverables during this period were met. Several interim reports detailing the various tasks were submitted. The following sections provide details on the completed tasks till the project pause and termination after Q2.

Corresponding Standard Reference Material Data used in Partial Least Squares Regression Models for Sugar Composition Estimates in Biomass in: Economic Impact of Yield and Composition Variation in Bioenergy Crops: Populus trichocarpa

Corresponding Standard Reference Material Data used in Partial Least Squares Regression Models for Sugar Composition Estimates in Biomass in: Economic Impact of Yield and Composition Variation in Bioenergy Crops: Populus trichocarpa (for corresponding manuscript: DOI: 10.1002/bbb.2148) PDF Files: Images of 1H NMR spectra for neutralized 2-stage acid hydrolysates of 4 NIST Standard Reference Material biomass samples (Monterey Pine 8493, Sugarcane Bagasse 8491, Wheat Straw 8494, and Eastern Cottonwood/Poplar 8492) and 2 Center for Bioenergy Innovation reference biomass samples (Poplar - Populus trichocarpa and Switchgrass - Panicum Virgatum). Suppression of the water peak was achieved using a NOESY-1D with presaturation, a recycle delay of 5 s, and a total of 64 scans. Spectra were acquired at 298 K and processed with automatic phase correction, baseline correction, and chemical shift referencing to TSP-d4. Images show all 1H data from 10 to 1ppm with inset spectra of region of interest (4.0 to 3.1 ppm). Text Files: Spectra for neutralized 2-stage acid hydrolysates of 4 NIST Standard Reference Material biomass samples (Monterey Pine 8493, Sugarcane Bagasse 8491, Wheat Straw 8494, and Eastern Cottonwood/Poplar 8492) and 2 Center for Bioenergy Innovation reference biomass samples (Poplar - Populus trichocarpa and Switchgrass - Panicum Virgatum) were converted into text files for plotting. Files contain 8192 points of raw spectral data from 12.23 to -2.78 ppm. The text file contains 4 columns of data and includes: Point number, Intensity, Hz, and ppm. Xcel Spreadsheet: HPLC measured monomeric sugar concentrations and bucketed 1H NMR data used to build monomeric sugar composition prediction models. Sugar composition in biomass determined from HPLC analyses are given in mg sugar/mg of biomass. Spectral bucketing was performed using Bruker’s AMIX software. Spectra were divided into 0.005 ppm buckets in the region of 3.10– 4.15 ppm for a total of 210 buckets. Headers for the bucketed data are the chemical shift in ppm of the center of the bucket. Bucketed data was used to build partial least squares models for subsequent predictions in The Unscrambler v. 10.5(CAMO A/S, Trondheim, Norway). The formation of methanol during hydrolysis interferes with the quantitative NMR analysis of sugars, so the methanol peak centered at 3.37 ppm and spanning four buckets (3.2925 – 3.2775 ppm) was set to zero for all spectra.
