System and component development for long-duration energy storage using particle thermal energy storage

Energy storage, at various scales, will be required to maintain reliable power supply from variable renewable resources, and improve grid resilience. Long-duration energy storage (10-100 h) can substitute baseload coal power generation and increase levels of renewable power supply. Thermal energy storage (TES) has siting flexibility and the ability to store a large capacity of energy, and thus it has the potential to meet the needs of long-duration energy storage. Here, a novel TES system was developed by using solid particles as storage media and charging/discharging electricity from renewable power connected via the electric grid. The particle TES uses low-cost silica sand at 30-40$/Ton that is stable at high temperatures of >1,000 degrees C. Thus, the particle TES system has an overall low storage cost and high thermal-power efficiency. Key components of the system were conceptually designed and modeled for their performance. Conversion of electricity to thermal energy using electric heating can achieve a >98% charging efficiency, and the conversion of thermal energy back to electricity uses an air-Brayton combined power cycle with >52% thermal-to-electricity efficiency at >1,170 degrees C to achieve a >50% roundtrip efficiency after subtracting estimated plant parasitic losses. Laboratory-scale prototypes were fabricated and tested to verify their design approaches and operations relevant to product-scale components.

Low-temperature solar thermal-power systems for residential electricity supply under various seasonal and climate conditions

In this work, the performance of low-temperature (<100 degrees C) solar thermal-power systems to satisfy residential electric loads was analyzed. The solar-driven system was designed to provide a fraction of the total electricity demand in a complementary operation with the electric grid. The analysis was conducted for an coperation during seven days each season, considering real solar and climate variables and residential loads at different climate zones in the United States. The efficiency of the system strongly depends on the solar radiation profile and the ambient temperature. Maximum efficiencies of around 9.5% were obtained in the cold and marine climate zones due to the high solar energy input and low heat dissipation temperatures. In these two zones, the system could supply more than 98% of the electricity demand all seasons. At mixed-humid and hot-humid regions, the system supplied around 50% of the electric load in three of the four seasons, but it only supplies about 27% of the electricity needs in the mixed-humid zone during summer and hot-humid zone during winter. The effect of the solar collector field area and the tank volume was also analyzed. In general, larger solar fields positively impact the efficiency. However, the impact of the tank volume varies depending on the solar radiation profile and the load requirements. Average efficiencies for the seven-day operation can be larger than 6% with a proper selection of the solar collector area and tank volume for an Organic Rankine Cycle with a capacity of about 2.6 kW. Finally, an economic analysis of the system was conducted, and the results were compared with a solar PV + battery system of similar capacity. It is expected that the cost for the analyzed solar-thermal system decreases in the coming years with the increased interest on low temperature applications.

Enhancing mobility and interface state engineering via UV-ozone treatment in BEOL-compatible ultrathin TiO 2 transistors

It has emerged as a potential candidate to improve the performance of monolithic-three-dimensional (M3D) integration of fused logic and memories through low-temperature in situ synthesis of high-performance metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) transistors. Here, we report the demonstration of the BEOL-compatible low thermal budget (350 °C) fabrication process of ultrathin-TiO2 transistors by the combination of RTA and UV-ozone treatment (RTA-UVOz). UV–ozone (UVOz) treatment of TiO2 anatase films significantly enhances stability, boosting ION current and field effect mobility (μ FE ) by two times of magnitude in TiO2 TFTs. UV ozone treatment helps to eliminate pre-existing oxygen vacancies and carbon contamination on TiO2 channels even at low temperature (100 °C), resulting in high-quality channel/dielectric interfaces with low interface states (D it ). During UVOz treatment, oxygen species (O x ) passivate the oxygen vacancies ($V$$^{2+}_{o}$), and hence low concentration of $V$$^{2+}_{o}$ would be left for ionization/de-ionization under PBS/NBS, leading to improved bias stress stability. Furthermore, the TiO 2 TFTs with thin ZrO 2 gate dielectric exhibited excellent performance including a lower subthreshold swing (SS) of 98 mV/dec with high drive I ON current ∼ 4.5 μA/μm, a high I ON /I OFF > 10 9 , and mobility μFE of 7 cm 2 /V-s under a battery powered voltage of 1 V. UV–ozone treatment enables high-performance, CMOS-compatible TiO 2 transistors with a low thermal budget, ideal for next-generation flexible, energy-efficient electronics.

Effects of water recirculation on microalgae assemblage and corresponding sustainability of the photobioreactor cultivation system

An algae photobioreactor (APB) was used to determine the effect of water recirculation on the growth of algal assemblage. CO 2 in the flue gas from a power plant was the carbon source. Boiler water was used as the source water. The results showed that microalgae cultivation under recirculation conditions was stable over a period of four months. Biomass productivities during the 1st through 4th months of recirculation (0.26, 0.23, 0.20, and 0.18 g L –1 d –1 , respectively) were not significantly different than freshwater (0.22 g L –1 d –1 ). Furthermore, the relationship between eukaryotic and bacterial domains in the assemblage remained consistent throughout the four months of recirculation (80.7, 87.1, 83.1, and 82.1%, respectively, and 19.2, 12.8, 16.9, and 17.8%, respectively). This was not significantly different than the abundance of each domain in the control freshwater cultivation (83.7% eukaryotic and 16.2% bacterial). A 1 m 3 photobioreactor was then envisioned for a mass, energy, and exergy analysis to evaluate the water recirculation on sustainability of the culture system. The mass balance analysis concluded that 98% reduction in water usage, 25% reduction in nitrogen, and 12.5% reduction in phosphorus could be achieved during cultivation operating under recirculation for one year, while maintaining biomass productivity of 1.2 kg wet algal biomass and sequestration of 0.4 kg CO 2 per day. Furthermore, the exergy balance analysis concluded that without considering solar irradiation, the culture with water recirculation greatly enhanced the rational exergy efficiency, which represents a more sustainable cultivation system for CO 2 capture and utilization.

3-Hydroxypropionic acid recovery from fermentation broth through novel downstream processing: Technoeconomic analysis

This study develops and validates a simplified, fully solvent-free downstream processing (DSP) strategy for high-purity recovery of 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) from real fermentation broth containing 62.3 g/L of 3-HP. Optimized activated carbon treatment achieved 98% color removal, while Amberlite IRA-67 was operated at pH 4.5 and 30 °C to minimize product loss. This is the first integrated demonstration of a fully solvent-free DSP enabling recovery of bio-based 3-HP as both a solid sodium salt and a concentrated aqueous solution, supported by techno-economic analysis. At lab scale, the process achieved 77.3% recovery of sodium 3-HP with 83.2% (w/w) purity and produced a 30% (w/v) aqueous solution. Techno-economic analysis yielded minimum selling prices of $0.551/kg for the solution and $0.892/kg for the salt, both below target thresholds for cost-competitive bio-acrylic acid production. Overall, these results demonstrate an efficient, scalable, and economically viable industrial pathway for 3-HP recovery.

Keratin-derived functional carbon with superior charge storage and transport for high-performance supercapacitors

In this work, we report a scalable method to synthesize hierarchically porous, hetero-atom doped activated carbon nanosheet from waste biomass-human hair, and demonstrates the use of this carbon as an ultra-high performance electrode material for supercapacitor applications. Microscopic analyses reveal that sheet size ranges from 50 to 200 nm having a thickness of 15–27 nm. As-synthesized, carbon nanosheets possess a hierarchical porous structure having a specific surface area of 1548 m 2 g -1 . Heteroatom concentration (nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur) of around 25% is confirmed from XPS analysis. Therefore, the novel interconnected hierarchical porous nanosheets structure enables fast adsorption and transportation of ions during electrochemical processes. Also, the abundant chemically available electroactive heteroatom species in the material enhance the wettability of ions and contribute to pseudocapacitance. The electrochemical analyses through cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements in 6 M KOH reveal the quasi-EDLC behavior of the activated carbons due to the presence of heteroatoms. A reprensentative KOH activated carbon shows an excellent specific capacitance value of 999 F g -1 at a current density of 1 A g -1 . Furthermore, the symmetrically assembled two-electrode device also delivers a maximum energy density of 32 W h Kg -1 at a power density of 325 W Kg -1 . In addition, excellent cyclic stability of 98% capacitance retention is observed after 10,000 continuous GCD cycles even at a high current density of 5 A g -1 . Symmetric flexible supercapacitor device using KOH-PVA-K3FeCN6 as redox gel polymer electrolyte shows a synergistic specific capacitance of 145 mF cm -1 at a current density of 0.8 mA cm -1 exhibiting very less deviation in bending mode. Therefore, this waste biomass derived heteroatom doped hierarchical porous carbon nanosheets can be a promising material for cost-effective high- performance supercapacitor.

Waste plastic- and coke-derived flash graphene as lubricant additives

Lubricants play an essential role in reducing wear in mechanical systems. Carbon nanomaterial additives, such as graphene, have been found to significantly improve tribological performance when used as lubricant additives. Here, in this study, post-consumer plastic and metallurgical coke are converted into turbostratic flash graphene (FG) through flash Joule heating (FJH). The FG is then added to either poly(alpha olefin) 6 or 9 (PAO 6 or PAO 9). Adding waste plastic-derived FG (WPFG) and metallurgical coke-derived FG (MCFG) to lubricants resulted in a significant decrease in the coefficient of friction (CoF), wear scar diameter (WSD), and roughness during four-ball testing. WPFG and MCFG decrease the CoF in PAO 9 by 6% and 9% at 0.1 mg mL -1 , respectively, and in PAO 6 by 23% and 6% at 0.5 mg mL -1 , respectively. WPFG and MCFG decrease the WSD of steel balls in PAO 9 by 14% and 8% at 0.5 mg mL -1 , respectively, and in PAO 6 by 12% and 14% at 0.5 mg mL -1 , respectively, by forming a coating-like layer between the metal surfaces. Roughness decreased by 38% and 32% for WPFG and MCFG in PAO 6, respectively, and by 35% and 29% for WPFG and MCFG in PAO 9, respectively. Finally, preliminary life cycle analyses demonstrate that production of FG produces up to 99% less greenhouse gas emissions, requires 98% less energy, and consumes 99.9% less water when compared to conventional production techniques of graphene. Hence, metallurgical coke and waste plastic are shown to be ready feedstocks for high-quality FG lubricant additives.

Rational design of semi-interpenetrating network based on hyperbranched polyglycerol grafted MXene/polyurethane–epoxy for compressed hydrogen storage

Here, hydrogen (H 2 ) energy has emerged as a promising alternative in the automotive sector to replace fossil fuel; however, its storage with volumetric efficiency remains a challenge. The latest type IV storage vessel featuring a polymeric liner with composite overwrap incurs hydrogen saturation, which eventually causes failure. To prevent the H 2 dissolution in the liner, we have developed a barrier coating comprised of polyurethane/epoxy semi-interpenetrating network (S-IPN) combined with hyperbranched polyglycerol grafted MXene (h-MXene). The hyperbranched structure facilitated the dispersion of MXene in the coating solution by enhancing the exfoliation and improved the polymer filler interaction by forming covalent and H-bonding through end-terminal hydroxyl groups. Leveraging the dense network of S-IPN combined with the dispersed layer structured h-MXene significantly increased the tortuosity of the spray-coated barrier film applied to the nylon 6 liner. The coating exhibited a 90 % reduction in the H 2 gas permeability at only 2 wt% h-MXene concentration, which further improved to above 98 % at 10 wt% loading. Additionally, the h-MXene considerably improved the adhesion with the liner even in a highly stretched condition, signifying the durability of the coating under cyclic pressurization and depressurization of the storage vessel.

LaNi x Fe 1–x O 3 as flexible oxygen or carbon carriers for tunable syngas production and CO 2 utilization

The current study reports LaFe 1–x Ni x O 3–δ redox catalysts as flexible oxygen or carbon carriers for CO2 utilization and tunable production of syngas at relatively low temperatures (~700 °C), in the context of a hybrid redox process. Specifically, perovskite-structured LaFe 1–x Ni x O 3–δ with seven different compositions (x = 0.4–1) were prepared and investigated. Cyclic experiments under alternating methane and CO 2 flows indicated that all the samples exhibited favorable reactive performance: CH 4 and CO 2 conversions varied between 85% and 98% and 70–88%, respectively. While H 2 /CO ratio from Fe-rich redox catalysts was ~2.3:1 in the methane conversion step, Ni-rich catalysts produced a concentrated (~ 93.7 vol%) hydrogen stream via methane cracking. The flexibility of LaFe 1–x Ni x O 3–δ to produce syngas (or hydrogen) with tunable compositions was found to be governed by the iron/nickel (Fe/Ni) ratio. Redox catalysts with higher Fe contents act as a lattice oxygen carrier via chemical looping partial oxidation (CLPOx) of methane whereas those with higher Ni contents function as a carbon carrier via chemical looping methane cracking (CLMC) scheme. XRD analysis and temperature-programmed reactions revealed that both types of catalysts involve the formation of La 2 O 3 and Ni 0 /Ni-Fe phases under the methane environment. The ability to re-incorporate La 2 O 3 and Ni/Fe into a perovskite structure gives rise to oxygen-carrying capacity whereas stable Ni 0 or Ni/Fe phases would catalyze methane cracking without lattice oxygen exchange in the reaction cycles. Here, temperature programmed oxidation and Raman spectroscopy indicated the presence of graphitic and amorphous carbon species, which were effectively gasified by CO 2 to produce concentrated CO. Stability tests over LaFe 0.5 Ni 0.5 O 3 and LaNiO 3 revealed that the redox performance was stable over a span of 50 cycles.

Scale-up of microwave-assisted, continuous flow, liquid phase reactors: Application to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural production

Microwave (MW) technology can be powerful for the electrification and intensification of chemical manufacturing. However, very few examples of scaled MW processes exist. In this work, we build a scaled, MW-assisted, continuous flow reactor for the processing of liquid phase chemistries with specific application to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) production. Here, we demonstrate a corresponding computational fluid dynamics model to simulate the reactor’s temperature profile and performance, both of which are in good agreement with experiments. We construct a surrogate model to relate operating parameters to performance for guiding experiments, without demanding simulations, via active learning. Heat recirculation is demonstrated in this scaled reactor, further extending its scale and reducing the energy demand. An HMF yield of ~55 % and a productivity of 0.1 kg/hr, 8x higher than any other reactor, at a flowrate >20x than prior work, are demonstrated while maintaining energy efficiency of >98 %. A basic economic analysis estimates a $1.85/kg cost of HMF from fructose and >60 % reduction in CO 2 emissions than a conventional system without considering the impact of green electricity. We demonstrate that MW technology is well-applied to systems larger than the laboratory scale, and strategies to further reduction in cost and CO 2 are discussed.

An innovative approach for atrazine electrochemical oxidation modelling: Process parameter effect, intermediate formation and kinetic constant assessment

Water reuse for irrigation activities is becoming a crucial worldwide challenge due to the depletion of water sources. Anyway, agricultural drainage can potentially contain dangerous contaminants such as metals, pesticides, and herbicides, including atrazine. To address the need for agriculture wastewater purification, we investigated atrazine removal from simulated wastewater by electro-oxidation using platinum-coated titanium electrodes on a lab-scale experimental apparatus. The effects of electrolyte composition and concentration, i.e. ionic strength and applied current density on atrazine removal, were investigated. The results demonstrated that the electrochemical oxidation of the herbicide occurred through two routes, depending on the presence or absence of oxidizing chlorine species. The generation of intermediates during the treatment was monitored and quantified by evaluating the effect of an inert electrolyte (NaClO 4 ) versus an oxidizable chlorine species (NaCl). In both experimental conditions, five intermediates were identified, including desethyl-atrazine (DEA), hydroxyatrazine (ATZ-OH), desisopropyl-atrazine (DIA) and desethyl-desisopropyl-atrazine (DEDIA). A degradation mechanism and a model for describing hydroxyl radicals and active chlorine species contributions at ATZ oxidation were also proposed. Intermediate evolution profiles suggest that ATZ degradation can be considered as a series–parallel reaction system. Finally, the energy requirement assessment for ATZ removal was carried out. The highest ATZ removal (≅98%) was achieved with NaCl = 0.08 M, J = 60 A/m −2 , and E C = 5.83 kWh m −3 . Results highlight that atrazine removal was improved when an active chlorine species (NaCl) was present in the water solution. Moreover, the addition of chlorine species during electro-oxidation is an energy-saving strategy. Collectively, electro-oxidation technique can be efficiently applied to treat polluted water in order to meet the needs of recycling water quality and reduce resource consumption.

Prehydration of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) clinker at different relative humidities

The use of CSA cement in practice has been hindered by its unstable performance and short shelf-life caused by the prehydration of CSA clinker. In this study, the effect of ambient humidity on the prehydration rate and process of CSA clinker was investigated. The prehydration degree, ageing progress, and the dynamic change of mineral composition of CSA clinker exposed to five different relative humidities (ranging from 23% to 98%) for up to 180 days were studied. Experiments revealed that the ambient humidity of 60% RH can be considered a threshold value for storage of CSA clinker. Exposure of CSA clinker to RH higher than 60% will not only result in a significant decrease of hydraulic reactivity, but also in agglomeration of the clinker. Although the exposure of CSA clinker to RH lower than 60% has little effect on the hydraulic reactivity, the main hydration peak was found to be slightly delayed with the increase of RH.

Densification and oxidation behavior of spark plasma sintered Hafnium Diboride-Hafnium Carbide composite

This study reports on the sintering and oxidation behaviors of Hafnium Diboride (HfB 2 ) and Hafnium Carbide (HfC) based ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) composites. Pure Hafnium Diboride, Hafnium Carbide, and HfB 2 -50 vol% HfC composite were consolidated using spark plasma sintering (SPS) without the use of sintering aids. HfB 2 -HfC composite displayed a high sintered density of 98% as compared to 87% density of pure HfB 2 . The increased density of the HfB 2 -HfC composite is attributed to the bimodal powder distribution, which allowed for the smaller HfC particle to occupy the voids between the larger HfB 2 particles resulting in improved packing efficiency. Moreover, the higher planar surface energy, for the (111) and the (200) planes for HfC, contributed to the smaller HfC particle being a significant driving force in the sintering process. Oxidation studies of each material were carried out by exposing them to a high-speed plasma jet in a temperature exceeding 2700 °C. The results of these studies show an improved oxidation resistance of HfB 2 -HfC composite by 54% and 70% over pure HfC and HfB 2 , respectively. The enhanced oxidation behavior is attributed to B 2 O 3 filling in the porosity between the HfO 2 scale and protecting the underlying material. This study provides a new alternative to improve the sinterability of UHTC diborides by introducing another UHTC (i.e., HfC) to form a fully dense composite without sintering aid and superior oxidation resistance.

Simulated moving bed-inspired method for continuous adsorptive denitrogenation of model fuel

Efficient, continuous routes for removing nitrogen-containing compounds from hydrothermal liquefaction-derived synthetic aviation fuel are needed to enable direct blending with conventional jet fuels. Here, we report a simulated moving bed-inspired process for adsorptive denitrogenation of a model fuel. Unlike conventional simulated moving bed systems, which are designed for sharp separations between similar solutes, this approach was run deliberately outside the classical separation region so that both pyridine and indole were removed together from the hydrocarbon stream. Alcohol solvents were used to regenerate the silica adsorbent, maintaining performance over extended operation and avoiding the downtime and energy demand associated with calcination. Under these conditions, the system demonstrates removal of more than 98% of nitrogen while cutting solvent use by 28% compared to batch operation. Classical modeling tools predicted column concentration profiles even in this nontraditional regime, suggesting a straightforward path to scaling. Together, these results motivate solvent-efficient, continuous denitrogenation strategies that could be integrated with biorefinery processes.

Impacts of anthropogenic gadolinium on the activity of the ammonia oxidizing bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea

Widespread use of gadolinium-based contrast agents in medical imaging has resulted in increased Gd inputs to municipal wastewater treatment plants. Others have reported that typical wastewater treatment does not attenuate Gd, resulting in discharges to natural waters. However, whether elevated Gd impacts the performance of biological treatment has not been investigated. We examined whether gadolinium chloride or Gd chelated with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) affected the activity of the model nitrifying bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea. At nominal GdCl 3 additions ranging from 1 to 500 µM, no impact was observed compared to the control. Most (>98%) of the added Gd precipitated, and extracellular GdPO 4 nanoparticles were observed. When chelated with DTPA, Gd remained soluble, but no statistically significant impact on ammonia oxidation was observed until the highest concentrations tested. At 300 and 500 µM Gd-DTPA, a temporary reduction of nitrite production relative to the control (effect size 1.3 mg l -1 and 1.5 mg l -1 , respectively, at 24 h) was seen. By itself, DTPA was highly inhibitory. Modeling suggested that DTPA likely chelated other metals, but adjusting the concentrations of the most abundant metals in the medium, calcium and magnesium, indicated that lowering their free ion activities was probably not the cause of inhibition. Complexation of other essential metals was more likely. Furthermore, our studies indicate that while the low bioavailability of Gd may limit its ecosystem impacts, the role of synthetic ligands used with Gd and other rare earth elements should e considered as the production, use and disposal of these elements increases.

Targeted electrochemical reduction of carcinogenic N -nitrosamines from emission control systems within CO 2 capture plants

N-Nitrosamines are one of the environmentally significant byproducts from aqueous amine-based post-combustion carbon capture systems (CCS) due to their potential risk to human health. Safely mitigating nitrosamines before they are emitted from these CO 2 capture systems is therefore a key concern before widescale deployment of CCS can be used to address worldwide decarbonization goals. Electrochemical decomposition is one viable route to neutralize these harmful compounds. The circulating emission control waterwash system, commonly installed at the end of the flue gas treatment trains to minimize amine solvent emissions, plays an important role to capture N-nitrosamines and control their emission into the environment. The waterwash solution is the last point where these compounds can be properly neutralized before becoming an environmental hazard. In this study, the decomposition mechanisms of N-nitrosamines in a simulated CCS waterwash with residual alkanolamines was investigated using several laboratory-scale electrolyzers utilizing carbon xerogel (CX) electrodes. Hcell experiments revealed that N-nitrosamines were decomposed through a reduction reaction and are converted into their corresponding secondary amines thereby neutralizing their environmental impact. Batch-cell experiments statistically examined the kinetic models of N-nitrosamine removal by a combined adsorption and decomposition processes. The cathodic reduction of the N-nitrosamines statistically obeyed the first-order reaction model. Finally, a prototype flow-through reactor using an authentic waterwash was used to successfully target and decompose N-nitrosamines to below the detectable level without degrading the amine solvent compounds allowing them to be return to the CCS and lower the system operating costs. Furthermore, the developed electrolyzer was able to efficiently remove greater than 98% of N-nitrosamines from the waterwash solution without producing any additional environmentally harmful compounds and offers an effective and safe route to mitigate these compounds from CO 2 capture systems.

A Principle for Highly Active Metal Oxide Catalysts via NaCl-Based Solid Solution

Toward the preparation of industrial metal oxide catalysts, sacrificial organic templates, excessive solvents, complex impregnation, and drying steps are generally required. Here, we report a versatile rule for the simple synthesis of highly porous metal oxides with well-dispersed noble metal species. Porous metal oxides (Co 3 O 4 , Fe x O y , and Cr 2 O 3 ) are obtained with some surface areas (e.g., Cr 2 O3: 224 m 2 ·g -1 ) beyond the record value. Surprisingly, small noble metal nanoparticles (e.g., Pd: 3.1 and Pt: 3.2 nm) could be incorporated by this solid-state process simultaneously. Corresponding Rh-Co 3 O 4 , Pd-Fe x O y , and Pt-Cr 2 O 3 exhibit excellent performance: CH 4 combustion (T90 = ~360°C and thermal stability: >100 h at 680°C), hydrogenation of nitrobenzene and derivatives (turnover number [TON] = 2.49 × 104, 300 mmol per run), and reversed water gas shift (RWGS) reaction (44% CO 2 conversion with ~98% CO selectivity and thermal stability: >100 h at 500°C), respectively. Therefore, current principle via a NaCl-based solid solution could provide a solid-state, fast, and efficient route for processing metal oxide catalysts.

Generative large language models for predictive maintenance planning

Maintenance planning and the generation of necessary components for tasks can prove time-consuming and complex. Automating the creation of recurring or similar tasks by leveraging previous planning packages and data, while uncovering insights to automate planning package generation, presents an opportunity to conserve valuable time and resources. This work aims to harness the textual and probabilistic capabilities of large language models (LLMs) to automate the generation of planning packages. Results demonstrate their capability to generate essential planning package components, effectively replicating the statistical patterns in the data. This demonstrates the use of these tools inside a digital asset for automated planning. This work outlines a methodology for constructing datasets, a training suite, and evaluation methods for LLM-based textual and conversational planning tools utilized in an asset digital twin. Results indicate that the fine-tuned models generate estimated planning information within the statistical ranges observed in real maintenance data. The models achieve high accuracy (>90%) in document question-answering and instruction generation tasks. Furthermore, the conversational retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) assistant system achieves 100% document retrieval accuracy, while conversational information capture exceeds 98% across the majority of work-package assistant modules.
