Measurements of lead isotopic compositions in detrital K-feldspar have been increasingly used as a tool to assess sediment provenance. We compiled a database of previously published Pb isotope data from 700 bedrock K-feldspar samples and 1,423 age-corrected bedrock whole rock samples from western North American igneous and metamorphic bodies. Additionally, we report 66 new K-feldspar Pb isotope data for plutons throughout the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and British Columbia. Results show that the Pb isotope values of plutonic K-feldspar depend on the isotopically juvenile or evolved nature of underlying crust. Samples obtained from the mid Cretaceous – mid Eocene Coast Plutonic Complex, North Cascades, and Intermontane superterrane that occur west of the initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (Sri) = 0.706 isopleth exhibit a highly restricted 207 Pb/ 206 Pb and 208 Pb/ 206 Pb values centred upon 0.83 and 2.03, respectively. Conversely, rocks overlying older continental crust further east such as the Middle Jurassic – Late Cretaceous Omineca crystalline belt, Idaho batholith, and Boulder Batholith exhibit far greater variation of Pb isotope values that parallel the 100 Ma isochron calculated from a two-stage Pb evolution model. We demonstrate that Pb isotopic results from the Idaho and Boulder Batholith region can be used to define distinctive subregions for Pb isotopic provenance analysis, and compare these signatures to the Mojave-Salinian batholith of southern California and western Arizona, as these two areas have previously been proposed as source regions for extraregional sediment that was deposited within the Nanaimo Basin during the Campanian – Maastrichtian. Future Pb isotopic analysis of detrital K-feldspar from the Nanaimo Basin of southwestern British Columbia may effectively distinguish between potential extraregional sources separated by thousands of kilometres.
These sqw files were generated by combining all of the individual crystal angles scans using the HORACE software package (https://pace-neutrons.github.io/Horace/unstable/user_guide/Getting_started.html). The neutron incident energy for both temperatures was 50 meV. The file labeled 50meV_450K_All.sqw is the 450 K data and the file labeled 50meV_RT_All.sqw is for the 300 K data. The crystal was oriented such that HHL is in the scattering plane.

This is the dataset associated with the 2022 SRP Additive Manufacturing Prediction Challenge, originally hosted on Github at https://github.com/SRP-AM/SRP_AM_Prediction_Challenge. The benchmark was designed for validating prediction for the temperature history, residual stress, and distortion of an additively manufactured metal part with relatively simple geometry. A calibration problem with the same as-built geometry is provided with measured quantities of interest; including temperature histories at selective locations, post-build residual stress at selective locations, and overall distortion measurements. The challenge problem is presented with a different build sequence (i.e. thermal history). In this dataset, we include the actual recorded calibration and challenge measurements, as well as benchmark template files for testing predictions without incorporating the challenge data. Supplementary files around the materials and setup are available for transparency and reproducibility.
Abstract The synchrotron technique of micro X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy at the sulfur K-edge (S-XANES) provides a unique opportunity to measure the proportion of different oxidation states of sulfur (S) in silicate glasses. Although applied extensively in the analysis of basaltic silicate glasses, few S-XANES studies have investigated variations in S oxidation states with fO2 in felsic silicate glasses. In addition, no study has systematically compared the S-XANES results obtained from the same samples at different photon flux densities to quantify the relationship between exposure time and changes in S speciation in silicate glass, as has been done for Fe and V. This study evaluates observed differences in S speciation measured in experimentally produced H2O-saturated dacitic glasses over a range of reducing to oxidizing conditions (from log fO2 = ΔFMQ-0.7 to ΔFMQ+3.3; FMQ is the fayalite-magnetite-quartz mineral redox buffer) and equilibrated at 1000 °C and 300 MPa. S-XANES spectra were collected at three different photon flux densities using three microspectroscopy beamlines. As is observed in S-XANES analyses of basaltic silicate glasses, beam-induced changes to the S6+/ΣS are observed as a function of photon flux density and beam exposure time. Our results demonstrate that silicate glasses of dacitic composition undergo beam-induced photo-reduction in samples equilibrated at ΔFMQ > +1.75 and photo-oxidation if equilibrated at ΔFMQ < +1. The time required to observe beam-induced changes in the spectra varies as a function of flux density, and our study establishes an upper photon density limit at ~1.0 × 1012 photons/µm2. The S6+/ΣS calculated from spectra collected below this absorbed photon limit at intermediate flux densities (~1–4 × 109 photons/s per µm2) are affected by beam damage, as no conditions were found to be completely free of beam-induced changes. However, the S6+/ΣS ratios calculated below the limit at intermediate flux densities are consistent with thermodynamic constraints, demonstrating that S6+/ΣS ratios calculated from S-XANES spectra can be considered reliable for estimating the oxygen fugacity. Our results carry important implications for the S budget of felsic magmas and dissolution mechanisms in evolved melts. While our results from all three flux densities show the presence of S4+ dissolved in relatively oxidized (ΔFMQ > +1.75) dacitic glass, even in the spectra exposed to the lowest photon densities, we are unable to rule out the possibility that the S4+ signal is the result of instantaneous X-ray irradiation induced beam damage using S-XANES alone. When our spectra are compared to S-XANES spectra from basaltic silicate glasses, important differences exist in the solubility of S2– and S6+ between dacitic silicate melts, pointing to differences in solubility mechanisms as melt composition changes. This study highlights the need for further investigation into beam damage systematics, presence of S4+, and the solubility mechanisms of different oxidation states of S as silicate melt composition changes.
The landscape of power transmission and distribution is quickly evolving as more power conversion is done through power electronics and transmitted or distributed at medium voltage direct current (MVDC). As power electronics tend to store less energy and be less resilient to faults than conventional power transformers, a reliable and fast protection against faults is critical to protect power electronics (PE) based infrastructure, especially for medium- and high-voltage applications. This motivates the development of PE based protection circuits to replace slower contemporary electromechanical breakers. In this project a novel PE based MVDC circuit breaker is developed; the new design is comprised of 1) a normally-on leg made of commercially-available, cascaded SiC junction field effect transistors (JFETs) with a passive balancing network, and 2) a normally-off leg based on an optically-triggered gallium nitride (GaN) photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS). The normally-off leg was designed to be quickly turned on, to divert current to an auxiliary dissipative circuit, as the normally-on leg is turned off. This approach, using solid-state devices, was selected for a high-performance, fast-switching operation for the DC circuit breaker as compared to approaches that use slower mechanical switches. To be practical, the circuit breaker must have low conduction loss (low Ron) in the normally-on leg and fast coordinated triggering of the normally-off leg to avoid damage from inductive flyback, which could be considerable for long lengths of cable.
The Department of Defense (DOD) programs of records desire to reduce the time and cost of the development and delivery loop in metal additive manufacturing (AM), including establishing forwarded AM capabilities. The success of these efforts relies on a robust and qualified process. To achieve this, the United States Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Ground Vehicle Systems Center Materials Engineering (GVME) needs to be able to quickly evaluate, test, and develop feedstocks, processes, and parts. This report is directed towards demonstrating the need for a framework for metal AM processes, defining and exploring geometries for metal AM process qualification, testing resultant deposition, and delivering actionable data.

To compensate for the velocity differences of the hadrons and electrons in the Electron-Ion Collider, the hadron beam will be operated in a large range of the radial displacement (±20 mm in the 64 mm wide vacuum chamber). Machine protection and beam optics measurement require high-accuracy calculations of the beam position from the signal induced on the pickup electrodes. For the HSR, we need at least the fifth-order polynomial fit, which provides 70 microns r.m.s. error in the 40 by 20 mm region of interest as shown in Fig. 1. The calculations are made using a MATLAB script solving the 2D electrostatic problem.
