Exploring new small system geometries in heavy ion collisions [Slides]

We explore various new collision geometries in the context of the publicly available hydrodynamic model SONIC. We incorporate full A-nucleon configurations for 4 He, 12 C, and 16 O obtained from quantum Monte Carlo calculations with realistic nuclear potentials, and use a Monte Carlo Glauber calculation for the initial conditions.

(e,e’p) study of momentum distribution ratios in A=3 nuclei

We report the first measurement of the (e,e’p) reaction cross-section ratio for 3 He relative to 3 H, with missing momentum range of 40 ≤ p miss ≤ 550 MeV/c, at large momentum transfer $\langle$Q2$\rangle$≈ 1.9 (GeV/c) 2 and x B > 1. The data is compared with calculations performed within the plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) using realistic spectral functions and momentum distributions.

Ab initio short-range-correlation scaling factors in nuclei up to A=40

We use quantum Monte Carlo methods to calculate the short-range-correlation scaling factor a 2 in nuclei up to 40 Ca as ratio of two-nucleon coordinate-space densities in the limit of short interparticle distance. We employ both phenomenological potentials and local chiral interactions up to next-to-next-to-leading (N 2 LO) order for different values of the cutoff R 0 .

Many-Body Factorization & Position-Momentum Equivalence of SRC [Slides]

We study short-range correlations (SRC) using the generalized contact formalism (GCF) and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of nuclei from deuteron to 40 Ca. We employ different realistic nuclear interactions and extract spin/isospin-dependent nuclear contacts in both coordinate and momentum space.

Institutional Computing: Annual Progress Report, Precision early universe simulations to constrain nuclear reactions and beyond standard model physics

The current one-year allocation (w20 qburst) is the first year in a two year allocation of the same name. The project has supported two publications in peer-review journals, another manuscript in preparation for publication, a white paper for the Astro2020 Decadal Survey, and a number of talks (see below). Code development continues on implementing a neutrino quantum kinetic equation solver into BURST, now called QBURST. While implementing coherent and forward-scattering processes into the dynamical neutrino evolution equations, multiple numerical issues have appeared. We have remedied a number of these issues through extensive debugging and testing, which include streamlining interpolation and implementing new ODE integration techniques. Further testing is required to solve the problem at a precision of better than one part in 10 6 . We expect that we will understand the numerical difficulties and implement solutions by end of year 2021.

The Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless ββ Decay (LEGEND-1000 Preconceptual Design Report)

We propose the construction of LEGEND-1000, the ton-scale Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless ββ Decay. This experiment is an international project designed to answer one of the highest priority questions in fundamental physics. It consists of 1000 kg of Ge detectors enriched to more than 90% in the 76 Ge isotope of interest operated in a liquid argon active shield at a deep underground lab. The experiment is designed to achieve a discovery potential that covers the inverted-ordering neutrino mass scale region. The baseline design assumes installation in the SNOLAB cryopit. A similar experimental setup could also be realized at the LNGS alternative site.

Search for an Excess of Electron Neutrino Interactions in MicroBooNE Using Multiple Final State Topologies (submitted to PRL)

We present a measurement of ν e interactions from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber to address the nature of the excess of low energy interactions observed by the MiniBooNE collaboration. Three independent ν e searches are performed across multiple single electron final states, including an exclusive search for two-body scattering events with a single proton, a semi-inclusive search for pionless events, and a fully inclusive search for events containing all hadronic final states. With differing signal topologies, statistics, backgrounds, reconstruction algorithms, and analysis approaches, the results are found to be consistent with the nominal ν e rate expectations from the Booster Neutrino Beam and no excess of ν e events is observed.

Theoretical developments in the SMEFT at dimension-8 and beyond

In this contribution to the Snowmass 2021 process we review theoretical developments in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with a focus on effects at the dimension-8 level and beyond. We review the theoretical advances that led to the complete construction of the operator bases for the dimension-8 and dimension- 9 SMEFT Lagrangians. We discuss the possibility of obtaining all-orders results in the 1/Λ expansion for certain SMEFT observables, and briefly present the on-shell approach to constructing SMEFT amplitudes. Finally we present several new phenomenological effects that first arise at dimension-8 and discuss the impact of these terms on experimental analyses.

Energy-Energy Correlators for Precision QCD

In this contribution to the Proceedings of the US Community Study on the Future of Particle Physics (Snowmass 2021) we review recent progress in the evaluation and application of the Energy-Energy Correlator (EEC) event shape observable in $e^+e^⁻$ annihilation, hadronic collisions, and deep inelastic scattering. The importance of EEC as a precision probe of the perturbative and non perturbative aspects of QCD dynamics is emphasized. It can be used to extract the strong coupling constant and to constrain TMD distribution functions. Closely related energy-correlation shape variables have also been used to tag boosted objects produced in high energy collisions. The opportunities to study EEC at the future Electron-Ion Collider are also highlighted.

SBN-BD: O(10 GeV) Proton Beam Dump at Fermilab’s PIP-II Linac

Proton beam dumps are prolific sources of mesons enabling a powerful technique to search for vector mediator coupling of dark matter to neutral pion and higher mass meson decays. By the end of the decade the PIP-II linac will be delivering up to 1 MW of proton power to the FNAL campus. This includes a significant increase of power to the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) which delivers 8 GeV protons to the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) detectors. By building a new dedicated beam dump target station, and using the SBN detectors, a greater than an order of magnitude increase in search sensitivity for dark matter relative to the recent MiniBooNE beam dump search can be achieved. This modest cost upgrade to the BNB would begin testing models of the highly motivated relic density limit predictions and provide novel ways to test explanations of the anomalous excess of low energy events seen by MiniBooNE.

A cross-frontier quest to reveal the origin of the Universe

We still don't know much about our Universe. Various fundamental symmetry tests to reveal the origin of the Universe include: multi-species EDM searches, Lepton Flavor Violation, CPV/LNV/LFV searches at colliders, and Lepton Number Violation.
