On the τ-Compactness of Products of τ -Measurable Operators Adjoint to Semi-Finite Von Neumann Algebras

Let M be the von Neumann algebra of operators in a Hilbert space H and τ be an exact normal semi-finite trace on M. We obtain inequalities for permutations of products of τ-measurable operators. We apply these inequalities to obtain new submajorizations (in the sense of Hardy, Littlewood, and Pólya) of products of τ -measurable operators and a sufficient condition of orthogonality of certain nonnegative τ-measurable operators. We state sufficient conditions of the τ –compactness of products of self-adjoint τ -measurable operators and obtain a criterion of the τ -compactness of the product of a nonnegative τ-measurable operator and an arbitrary τ -measurable operator. We present an example that shows that the nonnegativity of one of the factors is substantial. We also state a criterion of the elementary nature of the product of nonnegative operators from M . All results are new for the *-algebra B(H) of all bounded linear operators in H endowed with the canonical trace τ = tr.

Anomalies of duality groups and extended conformal manifolds

A self-duality group $\cal G$ in quantum field theory can have anomalies. In that case, the space of ordinary coupling constants $\cal M$ can be extended to include the space $\cal F$ of coefficients of counterterms in background fields. The extended space $\cal N$ forms a bundle over $\cal M$ with fiber $\cal F$, and the topology of the bundle is determined by the anomaly. For example, the ${\cal G}=SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality of the 4d Maxwell theory has an anomaly, and the space ${\cal F}=S^1$ for the gravitational theta-angle is nontrivially fibered over ${\cal M}=\mathbb{H}/SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. We will explain a simple method to determine the anomaly when the 4d theory is obtained by compactifying a 6d theory on a Riemann surface in terms of the anomaly polynomial of the parent 6d theory. Our observations resolve an apparent contradiction associated with the global structure of the Kahler potential on the space of exactly marginal couplings of supersymmetric theories.

Generalized symmetries of nonsupersymmetric orbifolds

We determine generalized symmetries for 4D theories engineered via type II strings on nonsupersymmetric orbifold backgrounds ℝ 3,1 × ℝ 6 /Γ. Probe branes detect generalized symmetries via the adjacency matrix for fermionic degrees of freedom in an associated quiver gauge theory. In situations where the tachyons are sequestered away from the boundary 𝑆 5 /Γ, this exactly matches the result extracted from singular homology. In situations with an unsequestered tachyon which stretches out to the boundary, the presence of tachyonic pulses partitions up the space into several distinct sectors, and the net contribution again matches with the answer expected via quiver methods. For IIA backgrounds, the presence of a localized closed string tachyon leads to transitions in the spectrum of states, generalized symmetries, higher-group symmetries, as well as the level matrix of the associated symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). For IIB backgrounds with a stack of spacetime filling probe D3-branes, the onset of a radiatively generated potential leads to similar considerations involving scale dependent transitions in the symmetries of the theory, including structures such as duality defects/interfaces.

Cornering relative symmetry theories

The symmetry data of a 𝑑-dimensional quantum field theory (QFT) can often be captured in terms of a higher-dimensional symmetry topological field theory. In top-down (i.e., stringy) realizations of this structure, the QFT in question is localized in a higher-dimensional bulk. In many cases of interest, however, the associated (𝑑+1)-dimensional bulk is not fully gapped and one must instead consider a filtration of theories to reach a gapped bulk in 𝐷 =𝑑 + 𝑚 dimensions. Overall, this leads us to a nested structure of relative symmetry theories which descend to coupled edge modes, with the original QFT degrees of freedom localized at a corner of this 𝐷-dimensional bulk system. We present a bottom-up characterization of this structure and also show how it naturally arises in a number of string-based constructions of QFTs with both finite and continuous symmetries.
