Colloidal Synthesis of Palladium Nanocluster‐Decorated Cs 3 Sb 2 Cl 9 Perovskite Heterostructural Nanorods for Enhanced CO 2 Photoreduction

Developing efficient and sustainable photocatalysts for CO 2 reduction remains a significant challenge, particularly with environmentally benign materials. Here, in this study, we report the first one-step synthesis of metal–lead-free perovskite heterostructural nanocrystals by decorating Cs 3 Sb 2 Cl 9 perovskite nanorods with size-controlled Pd nanoclusters via a one-step hot-injection method. The resulting Pd-Cs 3 Sb 2 Cl 9 heteronanorods (HNRs) exhibit strong interfacial electronic coupling, enhanced charge separation, and excellent colloidal stability. Transient absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal a built-in electric field that drives directional electron transfer from the perovskite host to the Pd domains. Under UV irradiation, the Pd-Cs 3 Sb 2 Cl 9 HNRs demonstrate excellent CO 2 photoreduction activity with high CH 4 selectivity, achieving a record apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 2.62% among halide perovskite nanocrystal-based systems with a large electronic yield of 689.3 ± 12.2 µmol·g cat −1 . In situ spectroscopic monitoring and Gibbs free energy analysis further unveil a Pd-facilitated reaction pathway involving stabilization of key intermediates. This work introduces a new class of lead-free perovskite-based heterostructures through a facile one-step synthesis strategy and offers a new design principle for next-generation photocatalysts for solar fuel production.

Cs retention and diffusion in C-S-H at different Ca/Si ratio

Cement and concrete are commonly used in the construction of repository sites for radioactive wastes. The correct isolation of those contaminants requires good adsorption and low diffusion rates. Both parameters are highly affected by many factors, such as pH, temperature or composition. The large variability of experimental conditions and formulations makes it extraordinarily difficult to tackle the influence of each of them independently in experimental samples. To this effect, molecular dynamics simulations have been employed in this study to investigate the role of the composition in the capacity to retain Cs and diffusivity of these ions in calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel pores. The results indicate that the adsorption of Cs ions is worsened at high Ca/Si ratios due to a lower interaction of the cations with the C-S-H surface, while hydrophilicity of the C-S-H nanopore rises, resulting in higher long-range ordering and lower diffusion coefficients of Cs ions.

Advanced high-performance large diameter Cs 2 HfCl 6 (CHC) and mixed halides scintillator

This paper reports on successful growth and performance evaluation of two large diameter Cs 2 HfCl 6 (CHC) and Cs 2 HfCl 4 Br 2 (CHCB), both recently developed scintillator crystals. The discovery of Cs 2 HfCl 6 (CHC) as a scintillator has lately generated much interest in this material and its family, which belongs to the K 2 PtCl 6 cubic crystal structure. CHC is an intrinsic scintillator that is non-hygroscopic (slightly deliquescent, i.e., slightly moisture sensitive but does not deteriorate much when left in air), has no self-radioactivity, provides excellent energy resolution, and has excellent non-proportionality. CHC has a moderate density of 3.9 g/cm 3 and an effective atomic number of 58. Reported in this paper are transparent crack-free single crystal CHC and CHCB boules of one inch in diameter, both grown using the vertical Bridgman method. Samples retrieved from the boules, sized 23 mm × 30 mm and 23 mm × 26 mm, respectively, are characterized for their optical and scintillation properties. Energy resolutions of 3.5% and 3.7% (FWHM) at 662 keV, respectively, are reported. Light yields of 23,000 ph/MeV and 20,000 ph/MeV have been calculated for the large diameter CHC and CHCB crystals, respectively. Results comparable to previously reported results for smaller crystals have been obtained. Studies on decay time, non-proportionality, as well as detector characterization are also reported.

Influence of porous aluminosilicate grain size materials in experimental and modelling Cs + adsorption kinetics and wastewater column process

This paper focuses on the influence of the grain size of a geopolymer based adsorbent on its Cs + adsorption performances both in batch and fixed-bed process. The geopolymer phase was used as a binder to support NaY zeolite particle in a 20 wt% charged porous composite with 160 m 2 .g –1 of porous surface area. These samples were shaped with three grain sizes (50 /100/500 µm) to remove 80–90 mg/g of Cs + in batch and column operations. After their microstructural and porous characterizations, their efficiency and adsorption characteristics were investigated through adsorption isotherms and kinetic in the two processes. While the grain size has no influence on the maximal extraction capacity of the adsorbent, it strongly affects the sorption kinetic. By coupling experimental data and a modelling approach, the complex sorption mechanism was highlighted, suggesting a new insight of the contaminant sorption kinetic. Then, comparison of batch and column adsorption experiments illustrates the detailed explanation of various process parameters for column study. The results show challenges for fixed-bed column utilization by the choice of the appropriate grain size as a compromise between the material sorption kinetic and hydrodynamic considerations. Furthermore, this is of high importance to more accurately optimize the design of column adsorption to assess the transport of Cs+ in multi-porous tailored grain size materials.

Colloid-facilitated transport of 238 Pu, 233 U and 137 Cs through fractured chalk: Laboratory experiments, modelling, and implications for nuclear waste disposal

The influence of montmorillonite colloids on the mobility of 238 Pu, 233 U and 137 Cs through a chalk fracture was investigated to assess the transport potential for radioactive waste. Radioisotopes of each element, along with the conservative tracer tritium, were injected in the presence and absence of montmorillonite colloids into a naturally fractured chalk core. In parallel, batch experiments were conducted to obtain experimental sorption coefficients (K d , mL/g) for both montmorillonite colloids and the chalk fracture material. Breakthrough curves were modelled to determine diffusivity and sorption of each radionuclide to the chalk and the colloids under advective conditions. Uranium sorbed sparingly to chalk (log K d = 0.7 ± 0.2) in batch sorption experiments. 233 U(VI) breakthrough was controlled primarily by the matrix diffusion and sorption to chalk (15 and 25% recovery with and without colloids, respectively). Cesium, in contrast, sorbed strongly to both the montmorillonite colloids and chalk (batch log K d = 3.2 ± 0.01 and 3.9 ± 0.01, respectively). The high affinity to chalk and low colloid concentrations overwhelmed any colloidal Cs transport, resulting in very low 137 Cs breakthrough (1.1–5.5% mass recovery). Batch and fracture transport results, and the associated modelling revealed that Pu migrates both as Pu (IV) sorbed to montmorillonite colloids and as dissolved Pu(V) (7% recovery). Transport experiments revealed differences in Pu(IV) and Pu(V) transport behavior that could not be quantified in simple batch experiments but are critical to effectively predict transport behavior of redox-sensitive radionuclides. Finally, a brackish groundwater solution was injected after completion of the fracture flow experiments and resulted in remobilization and recovery of 2.2% of the total sorbed radionuclides which remained in the core from previous experiments. In general, our study demonstrates consistency in sorption behavior between batch and advective fracture transport. Finally, the results suggest that colloid-facilitated radionuclide transport will enhance radionuclide migration in fractured chalk for those radionuclides with exceedingly high affinity for colloids.

Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Tetrel-Arsenide Frameworks Templated by Li and Cs Cations

Two new ternary tetrel pnictide phases, Li 1.08 Ge 4.92 As 7 and Cs 0.11 Zn 0.05 Si 0.95 As, have been synthesized. Both compounds crystallize in new structure types, which demonstrate the flexibility of Ge(Si)–As layers when accommodating electropositive cations of various sizes. Li 1.08 Ge 4.92 As 7 displays a Ge-As layer motif that has not been observed in ternary Ge-As systems, while Cs 0.11 Zn 0.05 Si 0.95 As exhibits a 3D framework composed of fragments of the 2D parent-phase SiAs. For Li 1.08 Ge 4.92 As 7 , a combination of computational modeling and solid-state 7 Li MAS NMR was used to establish the correct crystal structure with one mixed occupied Ge/Li site. The compositions of the phases were confirmed through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Transport properties and UV–Vis spectroscopy reveal both reported compounds to be semiconductors. Cs 0.11 Zn 0.05 Si 0.95 As shows high thermal stability with congruent melting at 1300 K and an exceptionally low thermal conductivity of 0.5 W m –1 K –1 at 300 K. Temperature-dependent Li-ion hopping dynamics in Li 1.08 Ge 4.92 As 7 was characterized using 7 Li solid-state NMR.

Nearly Identical but Not Isotypic: Influence of Lanthanide Contraction on Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La–Nd, Sm, and Gd–Ho)

The effect of the lanthanide contraction often results in topological and symmetry changes in compounds with the same compositions as a function of lanthanide cation size. Here we report on the first example of a lanthanide thiophosphate exhibiting a change in the lanthanide cation environment without any topological or symmetry change. A series of new lanthanide thiophosphates with mixed alkali cations was obtained via a flux crystal growth technique using a CsI flux. The obtained compounds Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La–Nd, Sm, Gd–Ho) were grown as large single crystals (~0.1–1 mm 3 ) and characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Moving across the series, the structural studies revealed a change in the lanthanide coordination environment dependent upon the identity of the lanthanide. Although all compounds in the Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 series crystallize in the same space group and have the same Wyckoff positions of the atoms, a slight size change between Sm 3+ and Gd 3+ causes a subtle change in coordination number from 9 (for Ln = La–Sm) to 8 (for Ln = Gd–Ho), resulting in two distinct but virtually identical structure types. Ab initio calculations were performed, and the observed experimental trend was corroborated computationally. Finally, magnetic measurements performed on the Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, and Tb) compounds revealed paramagnetic behavior.

Size-Dependent Onset of Nitric Acid Dissociation in Cs + ·(HNO 3 )(H 2 O) n =0–11 Clusters at 20 K

We report the water-mediated charge separation of nitric acid upon incorporation into size-selected Cs + ∙(HNO 3 )(H 2 O) n=0-11 clusters at 20 K. Dramatic spectral changes are observed in the range n=7-9 that are traced to the formation of many isomeric structures associated with intermediate transfer of the acidic proton to the water network. This transfer is complete by n=10, which exhibits much simpler vibrational band patterns consistent with those expected for a tri-coordinated hydronium ion (the Eigen motif) along with the NO stretching bands predicted for a hydrated NO 3 – anion that is directly complexed to the Cs + cation. Theoretical analysis of the n=10 spectrum indicates that the dissociated ions adopt a solvent-separated ion-pair configuration such that the Cs + and H 3 O + cations flank the NO 3 – anion in a microhydrated salt bridge. In conclusion, this charge separation motif is evidently assisted by the electrostatic stabilization of the product NO 3 – /H 3 O + ion pair by the proximal metal ion.

Enhanced Neutron and γ-Ray Detection via 6 Li Substitution in Undoped and Tl-Doped Zero-Dimensional Perovskite Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 Scintillators

Radiation detectors are crucial in a wide variety of research and commercial applications, such as oil and gas exploration, medical imaging, nuclear nonproliferation, and homeland security. Neutron and gamma-ray detectors are fundamental components in portal monitors at ports and border crossings, bolstering national security against radiological threats. This study presents a dual-mode scintillator, undoped and Tl-doped 6 Li-Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 , and demonstrates its potential as a promising material for simultaneous thermal neutron and gamma-ray detection. We explore the Bridgman growth of both undoped and thallium doped Li → Cu and Li → Cs substitutional systems with various Li doping levels and assess their impact on scintillation properties. Under 662 keV gamma-ray excitation, the undoped crystals had light yields up to 35,900 ph/MeV, with energy resolutions down to 4.5%. The Tl-doped crystals performed better than the undoped crystals with light yields peaking at 65,900 ph/MeV and energy resolutions as low as 3.5%. When exposed to a moderated 252 Cf excitation source, our crystals had light yields between 102,900 and 167,200 photons per thermal neutron capture, with a full energy thermal neutron peak reaching 3 MeV in gamma equivalent energy. Pulse shape discrimination studies reveal well-separated gamma and neutron events, resulting in Figure-Of-Merit (FOM) as high as 3.7. Furthermore, these findings highlight the potential of Li-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 as a viable candidate for next-generation dual-mode scintillators.

FA x Cs 1–x PbI 3 Nanocrystals: Tuning Crystal Symmetry by A-Site Cation Composition

Nanoscale semiconductors show remarkably tunable properties. For metal halide perovskite (MHP) nanocrystals (NCs), surface energy and lattice strain stabilize desirable MHP compositions and crystallographic phases that are unstable in the bulk. We report an X-ray scattering study of the average room-temperature crystal structure of ~15 nm FA x Cs 1–x PbI 3 (FA = formamidinium) NCs. All compositions crystallize in the perovskite structure; however, the average structure lowers in symmetry from the a (cubic) to ß (tetragonal) to γ (orthorhombic) perovskite phases with decreasing x (Cs addition). The corresponding a- to ß- and ß- to γ-phase transitions occur between x = 0.75–0.5 and x = 0.25–0.1, respectively. Furthermore, structural refinements also indicate large octahedral tilt angles (10–30°) in the ß- and γ-phases and an increase in (pseudo)cubic unit cell volume upon FA addition. This work establishes the composition–structure relationship for FA x Cs 1–x PbI 3 NCs and demonstrates the ability to target average crystal symmetry with facile synthetic control.

Colloidal AInSe 2 (A = K, Rb, Cs) Nanocrystals with Tunable Crystal and Band Structures

Wide band gap AInSe 2 (A = K, Rb, Cs) is an important interlayer material for improving the efficiency of Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se) 2 (CIGS) solar cells. Compared to high-vacuum deposition and solid-state synthesis, a less energyintensive method is of interest for its fabrication. Herein, we present the rapid, low-temperature colloidal synthesis of AInSe 2 nanocrystals that opens a pathway for convenient solution processing. The crystal structures and electronic band structures of the nanocrystals were studied, and their particle morphology was found to be dependent on the choice of alkali metal and selenium precursors. Homogeneous solid solution (K,Rb,Cs)InSe 2 nanocrystals were synthesized using a mixture of alkali metal precursors. Their compositions, lattice parameters, and band gaps were easily tuned based on the K:Rb:Cs precursor ratio, providing potential for interface engineering of CIGS nanocrystal-based solar cells.

Lead-Free Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 Layered Double Perovskite Nanocrystals

Concerns about the toxicity of lead-based perovskites have aroused great interest for the development of alternative lead-free perovskite-type materials. Recently, theoretical calculations predict that Pb 2+ cations can be substituted by a combination of Cu 2+ and Sb 3+ cations to form a vacancy-ordered layered double perovskite structure with superior optoelectronic properties. However, accessibilities to this class of perovskite-type materials remain inadequate, hindering their practical implementations in various applications. Here, we report the first colloidal synthesis of Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 perovskite-type nanocrystals (NCs). The resulting NCs exhibit a layered double perovskite structure with ordered vacancies and a direct bandgap of 1.79 eV. A composition-structure-property relationship has been established by investigating a series of Cs 4 Cu x Ag 2-2x Sb 2 Cl 12 perovskite-type NCs (0 ≤ x ≤ 1). The composition-induced crystal structure transformation, thus the electronic bandgap evolution has been explored by experimental observations and further confirmed by theoretical calculations. Taking advantages of both the unique electronic structure and solution processability, we demonstrate that the Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 NCs can be solution-processed as high-speed photodetectors with ultrafast photo-response and narrow bandwidth. We anticipate that our study will prompt future research to design and fabricate novel and high-performance lead-free perovskite-type NCs for a range of applications.

Impact of processing conditions on the film formation of lead-free halide double perovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6

Lead-free halide double perovskites with enhanced stability have gained attention as a promising environmentally friendly alternative to lead-based halide perovskites. Amongst different halide double perovskites, Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 has shown attractive optoelectronic properties and stability, making it a promising candidate for stable high-efficiency optoelectronic devices. Motivated by a data mining effort, we present here in this study the effects of different processing strategies on the microstructure and thin-film formation dynamics of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 . We apply some of the most successfully used solvent engineering approaches from the halide perovskite research to halide double perovskites, namely antisolvent- and additive-assisted synthesis. Using in situ spectroscopy and diffraction, the film formation of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 is investigated during spin coating, and the subsequent post-deposition thermal annealing. Dropping antisolvents during spin coating induces immediate supersaturation and crystallization of the wet film, whereas the time of dropping the antisolvent has implications on the film formation dynamics and the final microstructure. For additive (HBr)-assisted synthesis, we show how the addition of HBr affects colloid formation in solution and thus influences the crystallization pathway during thin-film processing. Finally, HBr additive simplifies synthesis in that it doesn't require solution and substrate preheating to obtain pinhole-free films even with higher thickness.

High-throughput reaction discovery for Cs–Pb–Br nanocrystal synthesis

High-throughput reaction discovery is necessary to understand complex reaction spaces for inorganic nanocrystal synthesis. Here, we implemented a high-throughput continuous flow millifluidic reactor to perform reaction discovery for Cs–Pb–Br nanocrystal synthesis using a ligand assisted reprecipitation (LARP)-type approach. 3D-printed flow resistors enable the screening of up to 16 different mixing ratios within a single 90 s run, allowing for >270 different precursor concentration ratios to be quickly tested to explore the phase space that results in CsPbBr 3 , Cs 4 PbBr 6 , a biphasic mixture, or no product. To construct a full phase map from these high-throughput experiments, a neural network was trained and validated to predict the product composition (~500 000 points in precursor concentration space). The phase map predicts product composition/phase as a function of Cs–Pb–Br feed ratio. As a result, this approach demonstrates how high-throughput flow chemistry can be used in tandem with machine learning to rapidly explore nanocrystal reaction spaces in flow.

Fragmentation dynamics of CS 2 dications and trications following S 2p ionization

Here, we present the results from a detailed study of the fragmentation dynamics of CS$_2^{2+}$ and CS$_2^{3+}$, formed in intense femtosecond soft x-ray pulses above the sulfur 2p edge, primarily through single core photoionization from the S 2p site, and subsequent Auger–Meitner decay(s). By combining three-dimensional velocity map imaging with covariance analysis, we determine the relative momenta of the ions produced in each two- and three-body fragmentation channel, at significantly higher ion count rates than conventional coincidence measurements. We shed new light on the wide range of fragmentation channels observed from the CS 2 dication and trication, including channels that involve ionization-induced bond formation and fragmentations producing undetected neutral cofragments. In the latter case, a “native frames” approach is used to isolate contributions from concerted and sequential fragmentations and extract dynamical information about each step of a concerted fragmentation process. While dications often fragment sequentially, the trication is dominated by concerted fragmentation. The main trication fragmentation channel into S + + C + + S + can be well-approximated by classical Coulombic simulations of the ground-state geometry distribution, reflecting both the nature of the trication potential energy surface and the rapid multiple ionization prior to substantial structural dynamics. This study demonstrates ways in which fundamental insights into the fragmentation dynamics of polycations following x-ray ionization may be extracted, which will be beneficial to future studies that employ time-resolved x-ray Coulomb explosion imaging to study ultrafast photochemistry.

Time-resolved Auger–Meitner spectroscopy of the photodissociation dynamics of CS 2

The photodissociation dynamics of UV excited CS 2 are investigated using time-resolved Auger–Meitner (AM) spectroscopy. AM decay is initiated by inner-shell ionisation with a femtosecond duration x-ray (179.9 eV) probe generated by the FERMI free electron laser. The time-delayed x-ray probe removes an electron from the S(2p) orbital leading to secondary emission of a high energy electron through AM decay. We monitor the electron kinetic energy of the AM emission as a function of pump-probe delay and observe time-dependent changes in the spectrum that correlate with the formation of bound, excited-state CS 2 molecules at early times, and CS + S fragments on the picosecond timescale. The results are analysed based on a simplified kinetic scheme that provides a time constant for dissociation of approximately 1.2 ps, in agreement with previous time-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements (Gabalski, et al 2023 J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 14 7126–7133).

Observation of Low-Lying Isomeric States in 136 Cs: A New Avenue for Dark Matter and Solar Neutrino Detection in Xenon Detectors

We report on new measurements establishing the existence of low-lying isomeric states in 136 Cs using γ rays produced in 136 Xe(p,n) 136 Cs reactions. Here, two states with O(100) ns lifetimes are placed in the decay sequence of the 136 Cs levels that are populated in charged-current interactions of solar neutrinos and fermionic dark matter with 136 Xe. Xenon-based experiments can therefore exploit a delayed-coincidence tag of these interactions, greatly suppressing backgrounds to enable spectroscopic studies of solar neutrinos and dark matter.
