New sterically hindered polyvinylamine-containing membranes for CO 2 capture from flue gas

Amine-containing facilitated transport membranes can have both high permeability and selectivity due to the reversible reaction between CO 2 and amino groups for effective carbon capture from flue gas. In this study, we have developed an improved method for the synthesis of high-molecular-weight sterically hindered polyvinylamine (PVAm) as the new fixed-site carrier in thin-film composite membranes for CO 2 capture. Commercially available PVAm was N-monomethylated into poly-N-methyl-N-vinylamine (PVAm-CH 3 ) using the stepwise reductive amination with a highly polar fluorinated alcohol as the solvent to enhance the equilibrium shift to the formation of the imine intermediate. The method prevented over-alkylation, resulting in the increased yield of the target product. PVAm-CH 3 exhibited excellent CO 2 facilitation with a CO 2 permeability of 445.7 Barrer (1 Barrer = 3.349 x 10 –16 mol m m –2 s –1 Pa –1 ) and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 70.3, which are above the Robeson 2008 upper bound. The PVAm-CH 3 solution retained a sufficiently high viscosity after incorporating the aminoacid salt, 2-(1-piperazinyl)ethylamine sarcosinate (PZEA-Sar), as the mobile carrier for the membrane coating on nanoporous polyethersulfone (PES) substrates without any penetration issues. The resultant thin-film composite PVAm-CH3/PZEA-Sar membrane with a thickness of approximately 170 nm exhibited a superior CO 2 performance of 1071 GPU (1 GPU = 3.349 x 10 –10 mol m –2 s –1 Pa –1 ) and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 183 at 57°C and a feed gas pressure of 111.64 kPa (1.5 psig). This PVAm-CH 3 /PZEA-Sar membrane surpassed the latest redefined 2019 CO 2 /N 2 upper bound and outperformed other polymer-based membranes. Density functional theory calculations also demonstrated that PVAm-CH 3 showed a stronger preference, relative to PVAm, toward the more efficient bicarbonate pathway. Thus, the steric hindrance effect of PVAm-CH 3 enhanced the solubility of CO 2 in the polymer matrix and resulted in the higher CO 2 permeance.

Increased Voltage in CdSe Solar Cells by Mitigation of Charge Carrier Trapping Due to Se Vacancies

Cadmium selenide (CdSe), with a 1.7 eV bandgap, is a promising high-bandgap semiconductor for tandem solar cells, yet device efficiencies are hindered by rapid minority carrier recombination. Here, in this study, polycrystalline CdSe solar cells are investigated using radiative emission spectroscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence, and density functional theory, revealing fast (sub-nanosecond) minority carrier trapping by selenium vacancy-related defect states with densities of (5–50) × 10 17 cm −3 , limiting carrier mobility and increasing recombination. By reducing absorber thickness to ≈0.5 µm, trapping effects are mitigated, achieving a record open-circuit voltage of 917 mV, a 165 mV improvement over prior reports. These findings clarify the role of Se vacancies in limiting CdSe solar cell performance and provide insights applicable to CdSe and CdSeTe thin-film photovoltaics. This work advances understanding of defect-mediated losses in II–VI semiconductors and suggests pathways for improving solar cell performance through defect control.

Open-Shell Donor–Acceptor Conjugated Polymers with High Electrical Conductivity

Conductive polymers largely derive their electronic functionality from chemical doping, processes by which redox and charge-transfer reactions form mobile carriers. While decades of research have demonstrated fundamentally new technologies that merge the unique functionality of these materials with the chemical versatility of macromolecules, doping and the resultant material properties are not ideal for many applications. Here, it is demonstrated that open-shell conjugated polymers comprised of alternating cyclopentadithiophene and thiadiazoloquinoxaline units can achieve high electrical conductivities in their native “undoped” form. Spectroscopic, electrochemical, electron paramagnetic resonance, and magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrate that this donor–acceptor architecture promotes very narrow bandgaps, strong electronic correlations, high-spin ground states, and long-range π-delocalization. A comparative study of structural variants and processing methodologies demonstrates that the conductivity can be tuned up to 8.18 S cm -1 . This exceeds other neutral narrow bandgap conjugated polymers, many doped polymers, radical conductors, and is comparable to commercial grades of poly(styrene-sulfonate)-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene). X-ray and morphological studies trace the high conductivity to rigid backbone conformations emanating from strong π-interactions and long-range ordered structures formed through self-organization that lead to a network of delocalized open-shell sites in electronic communication. The results offer a new platform for the transport of charge in molecular systems.

Anisotropic Phonon Response of Few-Layer PdSe 2 under Uniaxial Strain

PdSe 2 , an emerging 2D material with a novel anisotropic puckered pentagonal structure, has attracted growing interest due to its layer-dependent electronic bandgap, high carrier mobility, and good air stability. In this work, a detailed Raman spectroscopic study of few-layer PdSe 2 (two to five layers) under the in-plane uniaxial tensile strain up to 3.33% is performed. Two of the prominent PdSe 2 Raman peaks are influenced differently depending on the direction of strain application. Additionally, the A g 1 mode redshifts more than the A g 3 mode when the strain is applied along the a -axis of the crystal, while the A g 3 mode redshifts more than the A g 1 mode when the strain is applied along the b -axis. Such an anisotropic phonon response to strain indicates directionally dependent mechanical and thermal properties of PdSe 2 and also allows the identification of the crystal axes. The results are further supported using first-principles density-functional theory. Interestingly, the near-zero Poisson’s ratios for few-layer PdSe 2 are found, suggesting that the uniaxial tensile strain can easily be applied to few-layer PdSe 2 without significantly altering their dimensions at the perpendicular directions, which is a major contributing factor to the observed distinct phonon behavior. The findings pave the way for further development of 2D PdSe 2 -based flexible electronics.

Metal–Ligand Based Mechanophores Enhance Both Mechanical Robustness and Electronic Performance of Polymer Semiconductors

The backbone of diketopyrrolopyrrole-thiophene-vinylene-thiophene-based polymer semiconductors (PSCs) is modified with pyridine (Py) or bipyridine ligands to complex Fe(II) metal centers, allowing the metal–ligand complexes to act as mechanophores and dynamically crosslink the polymer chains. Here, mono- and bi-dentate ligands are observed to exhibit different degrees of bond strengths, which subsequently affect the mechanical properties of these Wolf-type-II metallopolymers. The counter ion also plays a crucial role, as it is observed that Py-Fe mechanophores with non-coordinating BPh 4 – counter ions (Py-FeB) exhibit better thin film ductility with lower elastic modulus, as compared to the coordinating chloro ligands (Py-FeC). Interestingly, besides mechanical robustness, the electrical charge carrier mobility can also be enhanced concurrently when incorporating Py-FeB mechanophores in PSCs. This is a unique observation among stretchable PSCs, especially that most reports to date describe a decreased mobility when the stretchability is improved. Next, it is determined that improvements to both mobility and stretchability are correlated to the solid-state molecular ordering and dynamics of coordination bonds under strain, as elucidated via techniques of grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques, respectively. This study provides a viable approach to enhance both the mechanical and the electronic performance of polymer-based soft devices.

Molecular Origin of Strain-Induced Chain Alignment in PDPP-Based Semiconducting Polymeric Thin Films

Donor–acceptor (D–A) type semiconducting polymers have shown great potential for the application of deformable and stretchable electronics in recent decades. However, due to their heterogeneous structure with rigid backbones and long solubilizing side chains, the fundamental understanding of their molecular picture upon mechanical deformation still lacks investigation. Here, the molecular orientation of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based D–A polymer thin films is probed under tensile deformation via both experimental measurements and molecular modeling. The detailed morphological analysis demonstrates highly aligned polymer crystallites upon deformation, while the degree of backbone alignment is limited within the crystalline domain. Besides, the aromatic ring on polymer backbones rotates parallel to the strain direction despite the relatively low overall chain anisotropy. Additionally, the effect of side-chain length on the DPP chain alignment is observed to be less noticeable. These observations are distinct from traditional linear-chain semicrystalline polymers like polyethylene due to distinct characteristics of backbone/side-chain combination and the crystallographic characteristics in DPP polymers. Furthermore, a stable and isotropic charge carrier mobility is obtained from fabricated organic field-effect transistors. This study deconvolutes the alignment of different components within the thin-film microstructure and highlights that crystallite rotation and chain slippage are the primary deformation mechanisms for semiconducting polymers.

Tuning the Mechanical and Electric Properties of Conjugated Polymer Semiconductors: Side–Chain Design Based on Asymmetric Benzodithiophene Building Blocks

Understanding molecular design rules for stretchable polymer semiconductors is important for enabling next generation stretchable electronic circuits. To simultaneously improve both electrical properties and mechanical stretchability, a design strategy is reported in introducing conjugated rigid fused-rings with bulky side groups in semiconducting polymers. In this work, the understanding of this design concept is improved by systematically investigating the effect of different types of bulky side groups asymmetrically substituted on conjugated polymer semiconductor backbones. Specifically, four types of side groups are investigated, including naphthalene (NaPh), biphenyl (PhPh), thienylphenyl (ThPh), and alkylphenyl (C4Ph), asymmetrically substituted on benzodithiophene units, namely asy-BDT. With the four types of side groups installed on BDT-containing conjugated polymers in an asymmetrical fashion, it is observed that they reduced the polymer chain aggregation and film crystallinity, hence improving the film stretchability. Furthermore, the fully conjugated polymer back-bone allows maintenance of good charge carrier mobilities. Specifically, polymer PDPP-C4Ph (with C4Ph side groups) shows the highest mobility in the fully stretchable transistor and maintained its mobility even after being subjected to hundreds of stretching-releasing cycles at 25% strain. Altogether, the results provide anunderstanding of the use of asymmetrically substituted fused-ring conjugated polymer structures to tune mechanical and charge transport properties.

High‐Performance Green Thick‐Film Ternary Organic Solar Cells Enabled by Crystallinity Regulation

Abstract The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) has reached high values of over 19%. However, most of the high‐efficiency OSCs are fabricated by spin‐coating with toxic solvents and the optimal photoactive layer thickness is limited to 100 nm, limiting practical development of OSCs. It is a great challenge to obtain ideal morphology for high‐efficiency thick‐film OSCs when using non‐halogenated solvents due to the unfavorable film formation kinetics. Herein, high‐efficiency ternary thick‐film (300 nm) OSCs with PCE of 15.4% based on PM6:BTR‐Cl:CH1007 are fabricated by hot slot‐die coating using non‐halogenated solvent (o‐xylene) in the air. Compared to PM6:BTR‐Cl:Y6 blends, the stronger pre‐aggregation of CH1007 in solution induces the earlier aggregation of CH1007 molecules and longer aggregation time, and thus results in high and balanced crystallinity of donors and acceptor in CH1007‐based ternary film, which led to high‐carrier mobility and suppressed charge recombination. The ternary strategy is further used to fabricate high‐efficiency, thick‐film, large‐area, and flexible devices processed from non‐halogenated solvents, paving the way for industrial development of OSCs.

Fine‐Tuning Alkyl Chains on Quinoxaline Nonfullerene Acceptors Enables High‐Efficiency Ternary Organic Solar Cells with Optimizing Molecular Stacking and Reducing Energy Loss

Abstract Material design of guest acceptor is always a big challenge for improving the efficiency of ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, a pair of isomeric nonfullerene acceptors based on quinoxaline core, Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O and Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O, is designed and synthesized. By moving the alkoxy chain attached on side phenyl frommeta‐position topara‐position, both π–π stacking distance and crystallinity are enhanced simultaneously. They obtain the uplifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. Compared to Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O, Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O exhibits wider absorption spectrum and higher extinction coefficient. Using D18‐Cl:N3 as host materials, the addition of guest acceptor Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O significantly improves the power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 17.61% to 18.49% because of higher open‐circuit voltage (0.875 V) and short‐circuit current density (27.85 mA cm −2 ). This can be attributed to the faster exciton dissociation, more balanced carrier mobility, fine fiber morphology, and lower energy loss in the ternary devices. However, Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O‐based ternary device achieves relatively low PCE of 17.17% because this device shows extremely low electron mobility. The results indicate that molecular stacking, film morphology, etc., can be effectively modulated by fine‐tuning the side chains of guest materials, which may be an effective design rule for further improving the PCE of OSCs.

Water-Surface Drag Coating: A New Route Toward High-Quality Conjugated Small-Molecule Thin Films with Enhanced Charge Transport Properties

Electronic properties of organic semiconductor (OSC) thin films are largely determined by their morphologies and crystallinities. However, solution-processed conjugated small-molecule OSC thin films usually exhibit abundant grain boundaries and impure grain orientations because of complex fluid dynamics during solution coating. Here, a novel methodology, water-surface drag coating, is demonstrated to fabricate high-quality OSC thin films with greatly enhanced charge transport properties. This method utilizes the water surface to alter the evaporation dynamics of solution to enlarge the grain size, and a unique drag-coating process to achieve the unidirectional growth of organic crystals. Furthermore, using 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl)anthradithiophene (Dif-TES-ADT) as an example, thin films with millimeter-sized single-crystal domains and pure crystallographic orientations are achieved, revealing a significant enhancement (4.7 times) of carrier mobility. More importantly, the resulting film can be directly transferred onto any desired flexible substrates, and flexible transistors based on the Dif-TES-ADT thin films show a mobility as high as 16.1 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , which represents the highest mobility value for the flexible transistors reported thus far. The method is general for the growth of various high-quality OSC thin films, thus opening up opportunities for high-performance organic flexible electronics.

Tuning Conjugated Polymer Chain Packing for Stretchable Semiconductors

We report in order to apply polymer semiconductors to stretchable electronics, they need to be easily deformed under strain without being damaged. A small number of conjugated polymers, typically with semicrystalline packing structures, have been reported to exhibit mechanical stretchability. Herein, a method is reported to modify polymer semiconductor packing-structure using a molecular additive, dioctyl phthalate (DOP), which is found to act as a molecular spacer, to be inserted between the amorphous chain networks and disrupt the crystalline packing. As a result, large-crystal growth is suppressed while short-range aggregations of conjugated polymers are promoted, which leads to an improved mechanical stretchability without affecting charge-carrier transport. Due to the reduced conjugated polymer intermolecular interactions, strain-induced chain alignment and crystallization are observed. By adding DOP to a well-known conjugated polymer, poly[2,5-bis(4-decyltetradecyl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-(2H,5H)-dione-(E)-1,2-di(2,2 '-bithiophen-5-yl)ethene] (DPPTVT), stretchable transistors are obtained with anisotropic charge-carrier mobilities under strain, and stable current output under strain up to 100%.

Not All Aggregates Are Made the Same: Distinct Structures of Solution Aggregates Drastically Modulate Assembly Pathways, Morphology, and Electronic Properties of Conjugated Polymers

Abstract Tuning structures of solution‐state aggregation and aggregation‐mediated assembly pathways of conjugated polymers is crucial for optimizing their solid‐state morphology and charge‐transport property. However, it remains challenging to unravel and control the exact structures of solution aggregates, let alone to modulate assembly pathways in a controlled fashion. Herein, aggregate structures of an isoindigo–bithiophene‐based polymer (PII‐2T) are modulated by tuning selectivity of the solvent toward the side chain versus the backbone, which leads to three distinct assembly pathways: direct crystallization from side‐chain‐associated amorphous aggregates, chiral liquid crystal (LC)‐mediated assembly from semicrystalline aggregates with side‐chain and backbone stacking, and random agglomeration from backbone‐stacked semicrystalline aggregates. Importantly, it is demonstrated that the amorphous solution aggregates, compared with semicrystalline ones, lead to significantly improved alignment and reduced paracrystalline disorder in the solid state due to direct crystallization during the meniscus‐guided coating process. Alignment quantified by the dichroic ratio is enhanced by up to 14‐fold, and the charge‐carrier mobility increases by a maximum of 20‐fold in films printed from amorphous aggregates compared to those from semicrystalline aggregates. This work shows that by tuning the precise structure of solution aggregates, the assembly pathways and the resulting thin‐film morphology and device properties can be drastically tuned.

Controlled Growth of Single‐Crystal Graphene Wafers on Twin‐Boundary‐Free Cu(111) Substrates

Single-crystal graphene (SCG) wafers are needed to enable mass-electronics and optoelectronics owing to their excellent properties and compatibility with silicon-based technology. Controlled synthesis of high-quality SCG wafers can be done exploiting single-crystal Cu(111) substrates as epitaxial growth substrates recently. However, current Cu(111) films prepared by magnetron sputtering on single-crystal sapphire wafers still suffer from in-plane twin boundaries, which degrade the SCG chemical vapor deposition. Here, in this study, it is shown how to eliminate twin boundaries on Cu and achieve 4 in. Cu(111) wafers with ≈95% crystallinity. The introduction of a temperature gradient on Cu films with designed texture during annealing drives abnormal grain growth across the whole Cu wafer. In-plane twin boundaries are eliminated via migration of out-of-plane grain boundaries. SCG wafers grown on the resulting single-crystal Cu(111) substrates exhibit improved crystallinity with >97% aligned graphene domains. As-synthesized SCG wafers exhibit an average carrier mobility up to 7284 cm 2 V −1 s −1 at room temperature from 103 devices and a uniform sheet resistance with only 5% deviation in 4 in. region.

Experimental Evidence of Free Carrier Generation in 2D Hybrid Organic–Inorganic Perovskites

Despite the significant potential of 2D hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites (2DHOIPs) for high-efficiency optoelectronics application-comparable to their 3D counterparts, the fundamental carrier photogeneration remains unclear. In contrast to conventional ultrafast optical property characterization, we use ultrafast photocurrent spectroscopy to investigate the early-time electrical properties of type-I and type-II 2DHOIPs by manipulating the quantum confinement and the dielectric quantum matching effect. We discovered that the high frequency dielectric quantum matching effect plays a major role in 2DHOIPs, demonstrated by their high carrier mobility (µ), near-unity photogeneration quantum yield (Φ), below-room temperature exciton binding energy (E b ), and approaching 3D space factor (DSF). Our work shows that the optoelectronic performances of 2DHOIPs are comparable to their counterparts of 3DHOIPs.

New Chemical Dopant and Counterion Mechanism for Organic Electrochemical Transistors and Organic Mixed Ionic–Electronic Conductors

Abstract Organic mixed ionic–electronic conductors (OMIECs) have varied performance requirements across a diverse application space. Chemically doping the OMIEC can be a simple, low‐cost approach for adapting performance metrics. However, complex challenges, such as identifying new dopant materials and elucidating design rules, inhibit its realization. Here, these challenges are approached by introducing a new n‐dopant, tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBA‐OH), and identifying a new design consideration underpinning its success. TBA‐OH behaves as both a chemical n‐dopant and morphology additive in donor acceptor co‐polymer naphthodithiophene diimide‐based polymer, which serves as an electron transporting material in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). The combined effects enhance OECT transconductance, charge carrier mobility, and volumetric capacitance, representative of the key metrics underpinning all OMIEC applications. Additionally, when the TBA + counterion adopts an “edge‐on” location relative to the polymer backbone, Coulombic interaction between the counterion and polaron is reduced, and polaron delocalization increases. This is the first time such mechanisms are identified in doped‐OECTs and doped‐OMIECs. The work herein therefore takes the first steps toward developing the design guidelines needed to realize chemical doping as a generic strategy for tailoring performance metrics in OECTs and OMIECs.

The Influence of Alkyl Spacers and Molecular Weight on the Charge Transport and Storage Properties of Oxy‐Bithiophene‐Based Conjugated Polymers

Abstract Conjugated polymers (CPs) with polar side chains can conduct electronic and ionic charges simultaneously, making them promising for bioelectronics, electrocatalysis and energy storage. Recent work showed that adding alkyl spacers between CP backbones and polar side chains improved electronic charge carrier mobility, reduced swelling and enhanced stability, without compromising ion transport. However, how alkyl spacers impact polymer backbone conformation and, subsequently, electronic properties remain unclear. In this work, we design two oxy‐bithiophene‐based CP series, each featuring progressively extended alkyl spacer lengths and two distinct molecular weight (MW) distributions. Using operando characterisations, we evaluate the (spectro)electrochemical and swelling properties of the polymer thin films, and their performance in organic field‐effect transistors and organic electrochemical transistors. Surprisingly, alkyl spacers negatively impact the hole mobility of our polymers, with higher MW amplifying this effect. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we show that it is thermodynamically favourable for adjacent non‐polar alkyl spacers to aggregate in polar electrolytes, leading to backbone twisting. Further spectroscopic measurements corroborate this prediction. Our findings demonstrate the active interactions between side chain structure, MW and electrolyte/solvent polarity in influencing polymer performance, underscoring the importance of considering solvation environment effects on polymer conformation when designing new mixed conducting CPs for electrochemical applications.

Benzotriazole‐Based Nonfused Ring Acceptors for Efficient and Thermally Stable Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Nonfused ring acceptors (NFRAs) have attracted significant attention for nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) owing to their chemical tunability and facile synthesis. In this study, a benzotriazole‐based NFRA with chlorinated end groups (Triazole‐4Cl) is developed to realize highly efficient and thermally stable NFRA‐based OSCs; an analogous NFRA with nonchlorinated end groups (Triazole‐H) is synthesized for comparison. Triazole‐4Cl film exhibits the high‐order packing structure and the near‐infrared absorption capability, which are advantageous in charge transport and light harvesting of the resulting OSCs. In particular, the strong crystalline behavior of Triazole‐4Cl results in enhanced self‐aggregation, leading to high charge carrier mobility. Owing to these properties, a PBDB‐T (polymer donor):Triazole‐4Cl OSC demonstrates a high short‐circuit current, fill factor, and power conversion efficiency (PCE = 10.46%), outperforming a PBDB‐T:Triazole‐H OSC (PCE = 7.65%). In addition, the thermal stability of a PBDB‐T:Triazole‐4Cl OSC at an elevated temperature of 120 °C exceeds that of a PBDB‐T:Triazole‐H OSC. This is mainly attributed to the significantly higher cold crystallization temperature of Triazole‐4Cl (205.9 °C). This work provides useful guidelines for the design of NFRAs to achieve efficient and thermally stable NFRA‐based OSCs.
