Field space geometry and nonlinear supersymmetry

We propose a geometric formulation of effective field theories via nonlinear supersymmetry. Nonsupersymmetric particles are embedded in constrained superfields governed by a nonlinear σ model, and operators are collected into potentials on the target space. The use of chiral superfields standardizes the treatment of flavor across scalars and fermions, and the minimal jet bundle extension makes invariance under derivative field redefinitions manifest. Asymmetric adsorption by quartz - A model for the prebiotic origin of optical activity

One mechanism previously proposed for the abiotic accumulation of molecules of one chirality in nature is asymmetric adsorption on the chiral surfaces of optically active quartz crystals. Earlier literature in this field is reviewed, with the conclusion that previous investigations of this phenomenon, using optical rotation criteria, have afforded ambiguous results. We now have studied the adsorption of radioactive D- and L-alanine on powdered d- and l-quartz, using change in radioactivity level as a criterion for both gross and differential adsorption, d-Quartz preferentially adsorbed D-alanine from anhydrous dimethyl-formamide solution, and l-quartz L-alanine. The differential adsorption varied between 1.0 and 1.8%. The implications of these observations are discussed from the viewpoint of early chemical evolution and the origin of optically active organic compounds in nature.

Momentum-Resolved Direct Observation of Chiral Phonons in Elemental Tellurium

Chiral phonons carry finite phonon angular momentum, yet their momentum-resolved behavior in acoustic branches remains largely unexplored. In this work, we report the direct detection of chiral acoustic phonons in elemental Te. Through a combination of high-energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering experiments and atomistic modeling, we confirm that longitudinal acoustic modes develop pronounced circular atomic motion by mixing with transverse modes. Our results establish a direct link between unexpected scattering intensity in nominally forbidden geometries and circular phonons, offering a framework for characterizing momentum-resolved phonon chirality and highlighting the emergence of intrinsic phonon angular momentum in acoustic branches.

Understanding the Effect of Chiral NN Parametrization on Nuclear Shapes From an Ab Initio Perspective

The ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model naturally describes nuclear deformation and collectivity, and is therefore well-suited to studying the dynamics and coexistence of shapes in atomic nuclei. For the first time, we analyze how these features in low-lying states of 6 Li and 12 C are impacted by the underlying realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. We find that the interaction parametrization has a notable but limited effect on collective shapes in the lowest 6 Li and 12 C states, while collective structures in the excited 2 + state of 12 C are significantly more sensitive to the interaction parameters and exhibits emergent shape coexistence.

Top quark electroweak dipole moment at a high energy muon collider

We study the sensitivity reach to probe the electroweak dipole operators associated with a top quark at a multi-TeV lepton collider. Studying the electroweak dipole operators is strongly motivated by precision physics. The operators exhibit unique chiral structure and can be enhanced with respect to others in theories beyond the Standard Model. We illustrate this point in a strongly coupled composite Higgs model. We find that a high energy μ + ⁢μ – collider may offer a unique opportunity to probe the electroweak dipole operators beyond the coverage by the LHC and future hadron colliders. The significant sensitivity is achieved by the leading channel μ + ⁢μ – → $t$$\overline{t}$ near the threshold, and substantially improved by the novel channel μ + ⁢μ – → $t$$\overline{t}$⁢ℎ at high energies. We may be able to reach a new physics scale well above the collider energy for moderate couplings of the Wilson coefficients. Our main conclusions are applicable to future e + ⁢e – colliders.

$2+1$ dimensional Floquet systems and lattice fermions: Exact bulk spectral equivalence

A connection has recently been proposed between periodically driven systems known as Floquet insulators in continuous time and static fermion theories in discrete time. This connection has been established in a (1+1) ( 1 + 1 ) -dimensional free theory, where an explicit mapping between the spectra of a Floquet insulator and a discrete-time Dirac fermion theory has been formulated. Here we investigate the potential of static discrete-time theories to capture Floquet physics in higher dimensions, where so-called anomalous Floquet topological insulators can emerge that feature chiral edge states despite having bulk bands with zero Chern number. Starting from a particular model of an anomalous Floquet system, we provide an example of a static discrete-time theory whose bulk spectrum is an exact analytic match for the Floquet spectrum. The spectra with open boundary conditions in a particular strip geometry also match up to finite-size corrections. However, the models differ in several important respects. The discrete-time theory is spatially anisotropic, so that the spectra do not agree for all lattice terminations, e.g. other strip geometries or on half spaces. This difference can be attributed to the fact that the static discrete-time model is quasi-one-dimensional in nature and therefore has a different bulk-boundary correspondence than the Floquet model.

A new-old approach to composite scalars with chiral fermion constituents

We develop a dynamical, Lorentz invariant theory of composite scalars in configuration space consisting of chiral fermions, interacting by the perturbative exchange of a massive “gluon” of coupling g 0 and mass M 0 2 (the coloron model). The formalism is inspired by, but goes beyond, old ideas of Yukawa and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. It yields a non-pointlike internal wave-function of the bound state, ϕ ( r ) , which satisfies a Schrödinger-Klein-Gordon (SKG) equation with eigenvalue μ 2 . For super-critical coupling, g 0 2 > g 0 c 2 , we have μ 2 < 0 leading to spontaneous symmetry breaking. The binding of chiral fermions is semiclassical, not loop-level as in NJL. The mass scale is determined by the interaction as in NJL. We mainly focus on the short-distance, large M 0 2 limit, yielding an NJL pointlike interaction, but the bound state internal wave-function, ϕ ( r → ) , remains spatially extended and dilutes ϕ ( 0 ) . This leads to power-law suppression of the induced Yukawa and quartic couplings and requires radically less fine-tuning of a hierarchy than does the NJL model. We include a discussion of loop corrections of the theory. A realistic top condensation model appears possible.

Neutrinoless double β decay with light sterile neutrinos: the contact terms

We study neutrinoless double-beta decay in extensions of the Standard Model that include n right-handed neutrino singlets, with masses m s below the GeV scale. Generalizing recently developed matching methods, we determine the m s dependence of the short-range nn → pp couplings that appear to leading order in the chiral effective field theory description of neutrinoless double beta decay. We focus on two scenarios, corresponding to the minimal νSM and left-right symmetric models. We illustrate the impact of our new results in the case of the νSM, showing a significant impact on the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life when m s is in the 200–800 MeV range.

Carbohydrates as a source of energy and matter for the origin of life

Recently, we proposed a new model of early glycolysis in which the oxidation of glyceraldehyde self-hemiacetals yielded energy rich polyglyceric acid instead of energy rich thioesters. In this model, polyglyceric acid not only acts as an energy source for phosphoanhydride synthesis, but also as an autocatalyst that can replicate the sequence of D and L residues in its structure. We began our investigation of this new hypothesis - the triose model - by developing a thermal method for the racemization-free synthesis of polyglyceric acid. The hydrolytic stability and the role of chirality in interactions of polyglyceric acid were studied using this thermal polymer. Next, we established that the 2- and 3-glycerol esters of polyglyceric acid are energy rich by measuring the Gibbs free energy change of hydrolysis of the 2- and 3-glycerol esters of 2 and 3-O-L glyceroyl-glyceric acid methyl ester - a model of polyglyceric acid. Recently, we discovered that glyceraldehyde is bound and oxidized to glyceric acid on the surface of ferric hydroxide and that soluble ferric ion catalyzes the rearrangement of glyceraldehyde to lactic acid. We are exploring the possibility that these reactions could yield polyglyceric acid and polylactic acid under plausible prebiotic conditions.

Appraising constrained second-order power corrections in HQET with Λ b →Λ c Ι⁢ν

We derive the Λ b →Λ c form factors for the Standard Model and beyond at second order in heavy quark effective theory, applying the recently proposed residual chiral expansion to reduce the set of unknown subsubleading hadronic functions to a single, highly constrained function, that is fully determined by hadron mass parameters at zero recoil. We fit a form factor parametrization based on these results to all available lattice QCD predictions and experimental data. We find that the constrained and predictive structure of the form factors under the residual chiral expansion is in excellent agreement with lattice QCD predictions and experimental data, as well as prior heavy-quark-effective-theory-based fits.

Halo Nuclei from Ab Initio Nuclear Theory

A realistic description of halo nuclei, characterized by low-lying breakup thresholds, requires a proper treatment of continuum effects. We have developed an ab initio approach, the No-Core Shell Model with Continuum (NCSMC), capable of describing both bound and unbound states in light nuclei in a unified way. With chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions as the only input, we can predict the structure and dynamics of halo and other light nuclei and, by comparing to available experimental data, test the quality of chiral nuclear forces. We review NCSMC calculations of weakly bound states and resonances of the exotic halo nuclei 6He, 8B, 11Be, and 15C. For the latter, we discuss its production in the capture reaction 14C(n,𝛾 )15C. We highlight the challenges of a description of 6He as a Borromean n-n-4He system. Finally, we present our calculations of excited states in 10Be exhibiting a one-neutron halo structure and a large scale No-Core Shell Model investigation of 11Li as a precursor of a full n-n-9Li NCSMC study.

Effects of Quark Core Sizes of Baryons in Neutron Star Matter

We describe the quark substructure of hadrons and the equation of state of high-density neutron star matter by using the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, which is an effective quark theory based on QCD. The interaction between quarks fully respects the chiral and flavor symmetries. Guided by the success of various low-energy theorems, we assume that the explicit breaking of these symmetries occurs only via the current quark masses, and all other symmetry breakings are of dynamical nature. In order to take into account the effects of the finite quark core sizes of the baryons on the equation of state, we make use of an excluded volume framework that respects thermodynamic consistency. The effects generated by the swelling quark cores generally act repulsively and lead to an increase in the pressure with increasing baryon density. On the other hand, in neutron star matter, these effects also lead to a decrease in the density window where hyperons appear because it becomes energetically more favorable to convert the faster moving nucleons into hyperons. Our quantitative analysis shows that the net effect of the excluded volume is too small to solve the long-standing “hyperon puzzle”, which is posed by the large observed masses of neutron stars. Thus, the puzzle persists in a relativistic effective quark theory which takes into account the short-range repulsion between baryons caused by their finite and swelling quark core sizes in a phenomenological way.

Exact Ground State of Interacting Electrons in Magic Angle Graphene

One of the most remarkable theoretical findings in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is the emergence of ferromagnetic Slater determinants as exact ground states for the interacting Hamiltonian at the chiral limit. This discovery provides an explanation for the correlated insulating phase which has been experimentally observed at half filling. This work is the first mathematical study of interacting models in magic angle graphene systems. These include not only TBG but also TBG-like systems featuring four flat bands per valley, and twisted trilayer graphene systems with equal twist angles. We identify symmetries of the chiral limit of the Bistritzer-MacDonald Hamiltonian that are responsible for characterizing the Hartree-Fock ground states as zero energy many-body ground states. Furthermore, for a general class of Hamiltonian, we establish criteria that the ferromagnetic Slater determinants are the unique ground states within the class of uniformly half-filled, translation invariant Slater determinants. We then demonstrate that these criteria can be explicitly verified for TBG and TBG-like systems at the chiral limit, using properties of Jacobi-θ$${\theta }$$ and Weierstrass-℘$${\wp }$$ functions.

In-medium similarity renormalization group with flowing 3-body operators, and approximations thereof

Here, we explore the impact of retaining three-body operators within the in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG), as well as various approximations schemes. After studying two toy problems, identical fermions with a contact interaction and the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, we employ the valence-space formulation of the IMSRG to investigate the even- A carbon isotopes with a chiral two-body potential. We find that retaining only those commutators expressions that scale as N 7 provides an excellent approximation of the full three-body treatment.

Candidate phases for SU(2) adjoint QCD$_4$ with two flavors from $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We study four-dimensional adjoint QCD with gauge group SU(2) and two Weyl fermion flavors, which has an SU(2) R chiral symmetry. The infrared behavior of this theory is not firmly established. We explore candidate infrared phases by embedding adjoint QCD into N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory deformed by a supersymmetry-breaking scalar mass M that preserves all global symmetries and 't Hooft anomalies. This includes 't Hooft anomalies that are only visible when the theory is placed on manifolds that do not admit a spin structure. The consistency of this procedure is guaranteed by a nonabelian spin-charge relation involving the SU(2) R symmetry that is familiar from topologically twisted N = 2 theories. Since every vacuum on the Coulomb branch of the N = 2 theory necessarily matches all 't Hooft anomalies, we can generate candidate phases for adjoint QCD by deforming the theories in these vacua while preserving all symmetries and 't Hooft anomalies. One such deformation is the supersymmetry-breaking scalar mass M itself, which can be reliably analyzed when M is small. In this regime it gives rise to an exotic Coulomb phase without chiral symmetry breaking. By contrast, the theory near the monopole and dyon points can be deformed to realize a candidate phase with monopole-induced confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. The low-energy theory consists of two copies of a CP 1 sigma model, which we analyze in detail. Certain topological couplings that are likely to be present in this CP 1 model turn the confining solitonic string of the model into a topological insulator. We also examine the behavior of various candidate phases under fermion mass deformations. We speculate on the possible large-M behavior of the deformed N = 2 theory and conjecture that the CP 1 phase eventually becomes dominant.

Dynamic magneto-chiral instability in photoexcited tellurium

In systems of charged chiral fermions out of equilibrium, an electric current parallel to a magnetic field can generate a dynamic instability that amplifies electromagnetic waves. Whether this mechanism also operates in chiral solid-state systems has remained uncertain. Here we observe signatures of a dynamic magneto-chiral instability in elemental tellurium, a structurally chiral crystal, using time-domain terahertz emission spectroscopy. Under transient photoexcitation in a moderate magnetic field, we observe terahertz radiation with coherent modes that grow in amplitude over time. We present a theoretical model that describes this behaviour based on a dynamic instability of electromagnetic waves interacting with infrared-active oscillators of acceptor states in tellurium, giving rise to an amplifying polariton. These results demonstrate that magneto-chiral instabilities can emerge in solid-state systems and establish a mechanism for terahertz-wave amplification in chiral materials.

γ 5 schemes and the interplay of SMEFT operators in the Higgs-gluon coupling

We calculate the four-top-quark operator contributions to Higgs production via gluon fusion in the Standard Model effective field theory. The four-top operators enter for the first time via two-loop diagrams. Owing to their chiral structure they contain γ 5 , so special care needs to be taken when using dimensional regularization for the loop integrals. We use two different schemes for the continuation of γ 5 to D space-time dimensions in our calculations and present a mapping for the parameters in the two schemes. This generically leads to an interplay of different operators, such as four-top operators, chromomagnetic operators, or Yukawa-type operators at the loop level. We validate our results by examples of matching onto UV models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Clockwork Axions in Cosmology. Is Chromonatural Inflation Chrononatural?

Many cosmological models rely on large couplings of axions to gauge fields. Examples include theories of magnetogenesis, inflation on a steep potential, chiral gravitational waves, and chromonatural inflation. Such theories require a mismatch between the axion field range and the mass scale appearing in the aFF~ coupling. This mismatch suggests an underlying monodromy, with the axion winding around its fundamental period a large number of times. We investigate the extent to which this integer can be explained as a product of smaller integers in a UV completion: in the parlance of our times, can the theory be “clockworked”? We argue that a clockwork construction producing a potential μ4cos(ajFa) for an axion of fundamental period Fa will obey the constraint μ < Fa. For a some applications, including chromonatural inflation with sub-Planckian field range, this constraint obstructs a clockwork UV completion. Alternative routes to a large coupling include fields of large charge (an approach limited by strong coupling) or kinetic mixing (requiring a lighter axion). Our results suggest that completions of axion cosmologies that explain the large parameter in the theory potentially alter the phenomenological predictions of the model.
