Best Practices for Grid Communications

As the grid evolves, the communications architecture will need to evolve with it. That architecture affords a structured means by which the evolving complexities of the modern electric grid can be managed. This document provides best practices that can be implemented in the grid of today and evolve towards the grid and grid architecture of the future. The evolving grid and its control communications increasingly rely on commercial communications providers and a variety of technologies, from wireless (e.g., 5G, microwave, Wi-Fi) to wireline (fiber, copper) to radio communications (P25, other repeater-based systems), and all these communications systems rely on electric power. A reliable and resilient grid must account for this complex set of interdependencies in its planning activities, especially those involving restoration and recovery. The participation of all relevant parties in both planning and exercising of plans can prevent unexpected conditions that impede the reliable operation and recovery of the grid. Best practices for grid communications include using a Network Management System to document the operational state, define and monitor baselines, detect changes, and accelerate response to abnormalities. If transitioning from SONET to IP/packet-based systems, translating grid requirements into communications requirements for latency, bandwidth and throughput, IP packet delay variation, packet loss, and availability should inform and drive technology planning and selection as well as that communication system’s Quality of Service (QoS) policies and Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Secure and reliable timing is another key component of a reliable and resilient grid that can operate through adverse events. A trusted internal NTP configuration, an integrated and diverse timing delivery system, optimizing the timing architecture based on the transport technologies of the communications system, and using established standards can deliver the level of timing accuracy required by a range of time-sensitive power system applications.

High-performance reversible adhesive from PET waste for underwater, structural, and pressure-sensitive applications

Developing versatile, tough, and sustainable adhesives that function effectively in both wet and dry environments is a major challenge. Here, we report a bioinspired design for versatile, tough, and reversible adhesives upcycled from consumer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste. Our approach uses solvent-free, room-temperature dynamic cross-linking of deconstructed PET macromonomers with a diacetoacetate cross-linker, generating a dynamic, vinylogous urethane–bonded, amphiphilic adhesive. Tunable cross-linker concentration and amphiphilicity yield versatile adhesives suitable for underwater, structural, and pressure-sensitive applications on diverse substrates. Our adhesive exhibits high lap-shear strength and work of debonding under both wet and dry conditions, outperforming common commercial adhesives. The dynamic bonds enable thermal repair, on-demand multicycle debonding/rebonding, facile removal, and chemical recycling. Our strategy of transforming plastic waste into versatile, tough, and reversible adhesives offers a sustainable solution for both plastic waste management and next-generation adhesive design while also providing a commercially viable pathway for valorizing plastic waste.

A comparative techno-economic analysis of renewable methanol synthesis from biomass and CO 2 : Opportunities and barriers to commercialization

Global demand for methanol as both a chemical precursor and a fuel additive is rising. At the same time, numerous renewable methanol production pathways are under development, which, if commercialized, could provide significant environmental benefits over traditional methanol synthesis pathways. However, it is difficult to compare technologies at different maturity levels, with differing feedstocks, and with significant differences in overall process design. Thus, there is a need to harmonize the analyses of renewable pathways using a consistent techno-economic approach to evaluate the potential for commercialization of various pathways. This analysis uses a novel cross-comparison method to assess near-term and long-term viability of both low- and high-maturity level technologies. Furthermore, the techno-economic assessment considers cost factors critical to market acceptance combined with carbon- and energy-efficiency assessments of three renewable pathways compared with a commercial baseline. We find that biomass gasification to methanol represents a near-term viable pathway with a high technology readiness level and commercially competitive market price. If cost-reducing technological improvements can be realized and scaled up in the CO 2 electrolysis pathways, the potential for higher carbon efficiencies may help drive market adoption of these more modular, direct conversion pathways in future markets as they present an opportunity to better support global decarbonization efforts through efficient waste carbon utilization.

TeraChem Cloud: A High-Performance Computing Service for Scalable Distributed GPU-Accelerated Electronic Structure Calculations

The encapsulation and commoditization of electronic structure arise naturally as interoperability, and the use of nontraditional compute resources (e.g., new hardware accelerators, cloud computing) remains important for the computational chemistry community. Here, we present TERACHEM CLOUD, a high-performance computing service (HPCS) that offers on-demand electronic structure calculations on both traditional HPC clusters and cloud-based hardware. The framework is designed using off-the-shelf web technologies and containerization to be extremely scalable and portable. Within the HPCS model, users can quickly develop new methods and algorithms in an interactive environment on their laptop while allowing TERACHEM CLOUD to distribute ab initio calculations across all available resources. This approach greatly increases the accessibility of hardware accelerators such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and flexibility for the development of new methods as additional electronic structure packages are integrated into the framework as alternative backends. Cost-performance analysis indicates that traditional nodes are the most cost-effective long-term solution, but commercial cloud providers offer cutting-edge hardware with competitive rates for short-term large-scale calculations. We demonstrate the power of the TERACHEM CLOUD framework by carrying out several showcase calculations, including the generation of 300,000 density functional theory energy and gradient evaluations on medium-sized organic molecules and reproducing 300 fs of nonadiabatic dynamics on the B800-B850 antenna complex in LH2, with the latter demonstration using over 50 Tesla V100 GPUs in a commercial cloud environment in 8 h for approximately $1250.

Southeast Regional CO 2 Utilization and Storage Acceleration Partnership (SECARB-USA): Regional Commercialization Plan (Final): Work Products 4.4.b (Regional Commercialization Plan) & 4.3 (Socioeconomic Impacts of CCUS and Workforce Readiness)

Commercialization of carbon capture and storage (CCS) within the SECARB-USA region is scaling up and will continue as governments and private companies expand on current decarbonization efforts. The Inflation Reduction Act (2022) enhanced 45Q tax credits beyond the 2018 Bipartisan Budget Act levels by incentivizing previously uneconomic projects to develop CCS plans and infrastructure. Additionally, the continued interest and support for CCS mitigates the relative risk of commercial-scale projects that are seeking long-term viability to develop capture facilities to accommodate their emissions reduction goals. This multifaceted Commercialization Plan provides an overview of the current status and potential for CCS in the Southeast and the pathways to achieve emissions reduction goals in the region by 2050. Specifically, the study addresses: • The current status of CCS activities in the SECARB region, • Assessment of buildout pathways for CCS projects and carbon transport infrastructure development opportunities, • Estimation of CCS job creation and economic impacts, and • The social justice considerations and public benefits associated with CCS activities in the SECARB-USA region.

Data for High Yield Production of 3-Hydroxypropionic Acid Using Issatchenkia orientalis

Biomanufacturing provides a more sustainable alternative to fossil-based chemical manufacturing. 3-Hydroxypropionic acid (3HP) is a top Department of Energy value-added chemical and precursor to bioplastics, yet cost-effective microbial production remains elusive. Here, we establish the acid-tolerant yeast Issatchenkia orientalis as a robust host for low-pH 3HP biosynthesis. Genome-scale modeling identifies the β-alanine pathway as optimal, offering the highest theoretical yield and lowest oxygen requirement. Thermodynamic analysis confirms its favorability under acidic conditions. Using sequence similarity network analysis, we discover highly active aspartate 1-decarboxylase (PAND), β-alanine-pyruvate aminotransferase (BAPAT), and 3HP dehydrogenase (YDFG), which significantly improve the pathway efficiency. Next, to further elevate the production, pathway optimization through multi-copy PAND integration, byproduct elimination (knockouts of pyruvate decarboxylase and glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase), and reinforcement of aspartate flux by overexpression of pyruvate carboxylase and aspartate amino transferase improves the titer to 29 g/L in shake flasks. Fed-batch fermentation at pH 4 with low-cost corn steep liquor medium further increases the production to 92 g/L with 0.7 g/g yield and 0.55 g/L/h productivity. Techno-economic analysis indicates that such performance could potentially enable a financially viable process for sustainable acrylic acid production. This work establishes I. orientalis as a next-generation platform for cost-effective 3HP production and paves the way toward industrial commercialization.

Electrical Switching of Nematic Plasmonic Nanocolloids for Infrared Solar Gain Control

Controlling solar gain is essential to reduce the energy consumption by residential and commercial buildings, which are responsible for ≈40% of all energy generated globally. However, the dynamic control of solar gain in the near-infrared that corresponds to ≈50% of the overall Sun's energy at the Earth's surface, separately from the visible spectral range has been a challenge, albeit commercial coatings provide passive control while retaining highly visible transmission. To address this problem, in this paper switchable silver colloids (SSCs) are demonstrated, colloidal analogs of the common silver coatings used for solar gain control. When dispersed in a nematic liquid crystal, orientations of such plasmonic silver nanoplates are controlled by ≈1 V low-voltage electric fields, allowing for sub-second switching of the near-infrared-based solar gain. Installed and retrofit products made from thin films of such nanoplate dispersions confined between glass and plastic substrates, respectively, exhibit electrically controlled infrared-based solar gain while retaining high visible-range transparency, low haze, and high color rendering index. Furthermore, this study's findings reveal a great potential of soft-matter systems in addressing energy-related problems.

Diversifying hierarchical ionic assembly by docking cations to anions as salt bridges

Here, we expand the diversity of building blocks available for ionic assembly by introducing tertiary (3°) ammonium cations into anion complexes. We use proton transfer between 3° amines and organo-phosphoric acids to generate H-bonding cations (R 3 NH + ) and anions (RHPO 4 – ) that co-assemble with cyanostar macrocycles into assemblies with 2:2:2 stoichiometry. At the heart is a supramolecular dimer where phosphate anions form salt bridges by H-bonding with cations. Unlike conventional 4° ammonium cations, 3,000 commercial amines provide diversity for high-throughput screening of 72 combinations (9 nitrogen bases and 8 acids), producing 13 privileged partners for quantitative assembly. Yields depend on the solvent and sterics of salt bridge formation. Ten more nitrogen bases connect to fluorophores (pyrene), photocatalysts (quinoline), drugs (Cipralex, Zytiga), and ionic liquids (imidazole). The synthesis and examination of 82 new salts exemplify how acid-base chemistry can open a pipeline to a diversity of building blocks for exploring hierarchical ionic assembly.

Building commissioning costs and savings across three decades and 1500 North American buildings

B.V. Building commissioning (Cx) is a process for assuring efficient building operations that can be applied to new construction and existing buildings, resulting in energy and non-energy benefits. Quantifying the benefits of commissioning is challenging, but a 2009 study of 643 commercial buildings provided a solid initial data set to which we added 839 additional buildings for a significantly expanded and updated meta-analysis representing 34.7 million square meters (373 million square feet) of floor area. Since 2009 the commissioning industry has continued to grow, driven by building codes, utility programs, and rising awareness of commissioning benefits. In parallel, building controls have become more sophisticated, and analytics software has emerged to assist with commissioning. We find that delivery mechanism and market segment are key determinants of outcomes, although significant and cost-effective savings are found across the spectrum. Median primary energy savings for Cx projects in existing buildings ranged from 5 percent for those conducted under utility programs, 9 percent for monitoring-based commissioning utility programs (i.e., augmented with submetering and diagnostics), and 14 percent for Cx projects outside of utility programs. Across all project types, median savings ranged from 3 percent for the lodging market segment to 16 percent for public order and safety facilities. Outcomes did not vary significantly by building size or by market segment. Energy savings are rarely estimated for new construction commissioning. We found that the median costs of Cx were lower for the 2018 sample than for the 2009 sample—$\$$2.85 per square meter ($\$$0.26 per square foot) for existing buildings (a 33 percent reduction) and $\$$8.78 per square meter ($\$$0.82 per square foot) for new construction (a reduction of almost 50 percent). The median simple payback time for existing buildings was 1.7 years, with a 25th–75th percentile range of 0.8–3.5 years. Overall, this article summarizes these and other key findings, and discusses how the 2018 data reflects shifts in commissioning practice and outcomes.

Elastic Resource Management for Deep Learning Applications in a Container Cluster

The increasing demand for learning from massive datasets is restructuring our economy. Effective learning, however, involves nontrivial computing resources. Most businesses utilize commercial infrastructure providers (e.g., AWS) to host their computing clusters in the cloud, where various jobs compete for available resources. While cloud resource management is a fruitful research field that has made many advances in production, such as Kubernetes and YARN, few efforts have been invested to further optimize the system performance, especially for deep learning (DL) training jobs in a container cluster. This work introduces FlowCon, a system that is able to monitor the individual evaluation functions of DL jobs at runtime, and thus to make placement decisions on resource allocations elastically. Here, we present a detailed design and implementation of FlowCon and conduct intensive experiments over various DL models. The results demonstrate that FlowCon significantly improves DL job completion time and resource utilization efficiency, compared to default systems. According to the results, FlowCon is able to improve the completion time by up to 68.8% and meanwhile, reduce the makespan by 18.0%, in the presence of various DL job workloads.

Empowering Critical Infrastructure Communication with Secure 5G Private Networks

With the transformational New Radio- Unlicensed (NR-U), 5G network can be operated with unlicensed and shared spectrum. Private 5G networks without any licensed bands, which are both highly expensive and usually available to only large commercial wireless providers, can now be used for a whole range of new applications including smart factories, warehouses, connected cars and drones. 5G’s support of a) massive machine type communication (mMTC) for a large number of connected devices with b) ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) capability when needed, and c) up to 20 times higher data rate with enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) than previously available, enables new and powerful capabilities in a wireless network. While these capabilities are transformational, necessary security and reliability requirements have to be satisfied when used in critical infrastructure such as factories, power plants, water systems, ports, and other industrial facilities. 5G standards have introduced significant security improvement over 4G/LTE as well as mitigations for new attack surfaces created by changes in the 5G network. This talk will discuss these security improvements and whether they meet the security properties required for mission critical communication over wireless.
