LiveCheckHSI: a Hardware/Software Co-verification Tool for Hyperspectral Imaging Systems with Embedded System-on-Chip Instrument Avionics

The emergent technology of system-on-chip (SoC) devices promises lighter, smaller, cheaper, and more capable and reliable space electronic systems that could help to unveil some of the most treasured secrets in our universe. This technology is an improvement over the technology that is currently used in space applications, which lags behind state-of-the-art commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment by several generations. SoC technology integrates all computational power required by next-generation space exploration science instruments onto a single chip. This paper describes hardware/software co-verification tools for the Xilinx Zynq-based control and data handling system that have been developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for visible-infrared imaging spectrometers. The system acquires and compresses images in real-time, in addition to programming the spectrometer (frame rate, exposure time), focus step motor, and heaters and reporting telemetry.

fife-utils

This is a collection of scripts related to the FIFE project at Fermilab, including utiltities for performing bulk oprations with our SAM and MetaCat (github)data handling systems. The most heavily used is the fife_launch/fife_wrap script pair, which is used to convert physics analysis executables into distributed grid jobs.

Computer modification reduces time of performing iterative division

Time reduction in performing iterative division results from using a serial-by-parallel divider employing a look-ahead feature that predetermines the sign relationships of several iterations before the computer cycle begins. This method can be employed in any data handling system performing high-speed division.

Economical phased-array antenna for environmental applications

Antenna system handles data acquisition and tracking, functions as a sensitive radio telescope, and serves as a radiometer in earth atmosphere investigations. Antenna's sensitivity permits resolution of solar disk quadrants in Doppler radar observations. Antenna also serves as a planetary radar device and link to commercial aircraft.

SSS-A spacecraft and experiment description.

The scientific objectives of the Explorer-45 mission are discussed. The primary objective is the study of the ring current responsible for the main phase of magnetic storms. Closely associated with this objective is the determination of the relationship between magnetic storms, substorms, and the acceleration of charged particles in the magnetosphere. Further objectives are the measurement of a wide range of proton, electron and alpha-particle energies, and studies of wave-particle interactions responsible for particle transport and loss in the inner magnetosphere. The orbital parameters, the spacecraft itself, and some of its unique features, such as the data handling system, which is programmable from the ground, are described.

The earth resources technology satellite - Photographic facility quality control program

A detailed description is given of the quality control program used in the photographic laboratory of the NASA-ERTS Ground Data Handling System. The product response variables measured include tone reproduction, resolution, and low spatial frequency noise. In addition to product response variables, certain performance parameters of the laboratory printers and processors are frequently measured in order to produce consistent duplications of archival photography. A description is given of the operation and use of a densitometer/computer interface which is used to calculate three tone reproduction response variables - film speed, average gradient, and base plus fog density. This procedure eliminates the need for any hand plotting of D log E curves to manually determine response variables.

Astronomy Spacelab payloads

Preliminary analyses of four typical Spacelab astronomy payloads have been completed. The payloads consist of instrumentation recommended by NASA and other scientists for early Shuttle missions. Design concepts have been prepared and compatibility with Shuttle and Spacelab verified. Mission parameters that meet payload requirements and efficiently utilize Shuttle resources have been selected. Integrated pointing and stabilization and command and data-handling system concepts have been developed. The results of all these activities indicate that productive astronomy missions can be carried out with Shuttle and Spacelab systems.

Additional experiments with a four-bladed cyclic pitch stirring model rotor, part 2 of second yearly report

The four bladed pitch stirring rotor model was used in a rotor dynamic wake survey at zero advance ratio, covering 2 deg, 5 deg and 8 deg collective pitch settings. Dynamic wake data were taken in planes .12 and .20 radii below the rotor disk and are to be compared with analytical wake data with parameters to be identified from pitch stirring transients. The model was modified to perform such transients. The instrumentation developed for this purpose is described together with the method of data acquisition and with the test procedures. The hardware and software for several data handling systems are discussed. These systems extract from pitch stirring transients the parameters of analytical dynamic rotor wake models.
