A Numerical Study of Displacement Body and Curvature Effects on Incompressible and Compressible Laminar Boundary Layers

This technique has been applied to study such effects on incompressible flow around cylinders at moderate to low Reynolds numbers and for compression ramps at hypersonic Mach numbers by employing a finite difference method to obtain numerical solutions. The results indicate that the technique can be applied successfully in both regimes and does predict the correct trend in regions of large curvature and displacement body effects. It was concluded that curvature corrections should only be attempted in cases where all displacement effects can be fully accounted for.

The elastic layer with a cylindrical hole subjected to a nonuniform axisymmetric radial displacement.

A problem in the linear theory of elasticity is considered wherein a layer with a circular cylindrical hole is subjected to a nonuniform axisymmetric radial displacement. The solution utilizes Navier's equations of elasticity which are solved by means of extended Hankel transforms. A special case in which the radial displacement is a linear function of the axial coordinate is presented. Numerical results are given in graphical form for the case when hole radius and layer thickness are equal. The inversion integrals were evaluated numerically using Longman's technique for computing infinite integrals of oscillatory functions.

Analytical displacements and vibrations of cantilevered unsymmetric fiber composite laminates

A fiber composite flat cantilever plate that has symmetric and nonsymmetric laminate configurations is theoretically investigated to determine its static and dynamic structural response. The finite element analysis method used includes a unique triangular finite element developed at Lewis for the analysis of fiber composite airfoils. The various responses investigated include tip displacements, natural frequencies, and fundamental mode shapes. The results show that the displacements and the natural frequencies can be in considerable error for nonsymmetric laminate configurations if the membrane-bending coupling is not taken into account. Structural response results obtained from ten laminate configurations are presented in tabular forms and may be used as an aid in selecting laminate configurations for composite airfoils.

Correlation of displacement effects produced by electrons, protons and neutrons in silicon

The correlation of displacement effects produced by electrons, protons, and neutrons in silicon is studied. Available data from the literature is employed. In particular the scope of the study is limited to the degradation of excess carrier lifetime and device electrical parameters directly related to it. The degree to which displacement effects may be correlated in order to predict semiconductor device response based on response data to another type of radiation is discussed. Useful ranges of the correlation factors (lifetime damage constant ratios) as a function of device majority carrier type, device resistivity, and injection level are presented. A significant dependence on injection level for the correlation factors is found.

Load-displacement measurement and work determination in three-point bend tests of notched or precracked specimens

Suggestions for testing of notched or cracked three-point bend specimens are presented which: (1) correct displacement measurement errors resulting from misalignment between the load applicator and specimen; (2) account for coincidental strains not associated with the work of crack extension; (3) simplify record analysis and processing; and (4) extend displacement gage range without sacrifice of sensitivity or accuracy. These testing details are particularly applicable to procedures in which the crack extension force is determined from the work done on the specimen.

Three-dimensional elastic stress and displacement analysis of finite geometry solids containing cracks

The line method of analysis is applied to the Navier-Cauchy equations of elastic equilibrium to calculate the displacement fields in finite geometry bars containing central, surface, and double-edge cracks under extensionally applied uniform loading. The application of this method to these equations leads to coupled sets of simultaneous ordinary differential equations whose solutions are obtained along sets of lines in a discretized region. Normal stresses and the stress intensity factor variation along the crack periphery are calculated using the obtained displacement field. The reported results demonstrate the usefulness of this method in calculating stress intensity factors for commonly encountered crack geometries in finite solids.

Displacement coefficients along the inner boundaries of radially cracked ring segments subject to forces and couples

Displacement results of plane boundary collocation analysis are given for various locations on the inner boundaries of radially cracked ring segments (C-shaped specimens) subject to two complementary types of loading. Results are presented for ratios of outer to inner radius R sub o/R sub i in the range of 1.1 to 2.5, and ratios a/W in the range 0.1 to 0.8 where a is the crack length for a specimen of wall thickness W. By combination of these results the resultant displacement coefficient delta or the corresponding influence coefficient, can be obtained for any practical load line location of a pin loaded specimen.

Crack border stress and displacement equations revisited

It is more or less accepted in fracture mechanics that the elastic stress and displacements very near to the tip of a plane line crack can be approximated with sufficient accuracy, for all geometries and outer boundary loading conditions, by a one-parameter representation, i.e., strictly in terms of the stress intensity factors KI and/or KII. It is shown here that this presumption which appears to be reasonable on face value, quantitatively speaking, is nevertheless unacceptable as a general proposition. The reason lies with the quite arbitrary practice of omitting the second term of the series representation for the stresses, a contribution which is independent of distance from the crack tip. It is not difficult to show by way of specific examples how such omission can lead to error of serious qualitative nature in the prediction of stress and displacement related quantities of interest.

Investigation of tidal displacements of the earth's surface by laser ranging to GEOS-3

Two different approaches to the problem were investigated: (1) a dynamic method that computed pass-to-pass apparent movements in station height relative to short arcs fitted to several passes of data from the same station, and (2) a quasi-geometric method that reduces the dependence on unmodelled satellite dynamics to a knowledge of only the radial position of the satellite by considering two-station simultaneous ranging at the precise time that the satellite passes through the plane defined by the two stations and the center of the mass of the earth. The dynamic method was applied to 24-hour arcs in an attempt to study the total tidal displacement at Goddard, but it was found to be unsuitable. The quasi-geometry method, on the other hand, is significantly less influenced by these effects because it is sensitive principally to the differential tidal displacements between laser stations. Using this method, a good approximation to the theoretical Love number h sub 2 was obtained from five passes over the GEOS-3 calibration area when a systematic bias of 2.16 meters was allowed in the radial distance to the satellite.
