Results of the telstar satellite space experiments

This paper describes how the Telstar satellite has performed in space. Included is information on changes in the temperature, spin rate, spin-axis precession, orbital parameters and power levels of the satellite signals, and comments on the behavior of the electrical circuits in the space environment.

Switching mechanism senses angular acceleration

Switching mechanism actuates an electrical circuit when a predetermined angular acceleration and displacement are reached. A rotor in the mechanism overcomes the restraint of a magnetic detent when the case in which the detent is mounted reaches the predetermined angular acceleration.

Readout system for radiation detector

Improved electrical circuit determines the amount of light detected by a photomultiplier tube when its output signal is in the dark-current range of the tube. The low-intensity light to which the tube responds arises from a thermo-luminescent ionized dosimeter.

Response of a radial-bladed centrifugal pump to sinusoidal disturbances for noncavitating flow

A radial-bladed centrifugal pump was run in water with sinusoidal fluctuations of pressure and flow rate imposed at the pump inlet. Since the flow was noncavitating, zero gain was assumed in computing pump impedance. The inertive reactance became greater than the resistance at relatively low frequencies. An electric circuit model was developed in order to explain the trends of inertance and resistance with frequency.

Operational manual for MX-290 data-voice PN Mod, MX-291 data-voice PN DEMOD

This operation manual is also the final report of the program to design, assemble, checkout, and deliver to the customer three MX-290 transmitters and two MX-291 companion receivers. These equipments are designed and assembled to provide for maximum flexibility with respect to making changes in electrical circuits which may be required for future applications. A number of test points for monitoring and troubleshooting are provided along with easy access to subunits.

Sound propagation and absorption in foam - A distributed parameter model.

Liquid-base foams are highly effective sound absorbers. A better understanding of the mechanisms of sound absorption in foams was sought by exploration of a mathematical model of bubble pulsation and coupling and the development of a distributed-parameter mechanical analog. A solution by electric-circuit analogy was thus obtained and transmission-line theory was used to relate the physical properties of the foams to the characteristic impedance and propagation constants of the analog transmission line. Comparison of measured physical properties of the foam with values obtained from measured acoustic impedance and propagation constants and the transmission-line theory showed good agreement. We may therefore conclude that the sound propagation and absorption mechanisms in foam are accurately described by the resonant response of individual bubbles coupled to neighboring bubbles.
