Photographs of the planet Mars generated by the Viking Mars program are presented and discussed. The Martian surface and its volcanoes receive particular attention. In addition, the atmosphere, temperature, surface craters, polar regions, and composition of Mars are briefly reviewed. Planetary evolution is considered. The highlights of the Mariner program for Mars are given.
A list of 1983 publications resulting from research pursued under the auspices of NASA's Exobiology Program is given. Topics in the fields of biological, chemical, and planetary evolution; geochemistry; and intelligent extraterrestrial life are listed.
Papers were presented at the 47th Annual Meteoritical Society Meeting on the Comparative planetology of Terrestrial Planets. Subject matter explored concerning terrestrial planets includes: interrelationships among planets; plaentary evolution; planetary structure; planetary composition; planetary Atmospheres; noble gases in meteorites; and planetary magnetic fields.
Archaean rocks provide a record of the early stages of planetary evolution. The interpretation is frustrated by the probable unrepresentative nature of the preserved crust and by the well known ambiguities of tectonic geological synthesis. Broad constraints can be placed on the tectonic processes in the early Earth from global scale modeling of thermal and chemical evolution of the Earth and its hydrosphere and atmosphere. The Archean record is the main test of such models. Available general model constraints are outlined based on the global tectonic setting within which Archaean crust evolved and on the direct evidence the Archaean record provides, particularly the thermal state of the early Earth.
The primordial Mars may have possessed a thick carbon dioxide atmosphere, with liquid water common on the surface, similar in many ways to the primordial earth. During this epoch, billions of years ago, the surface of Mars could have been conducive to the origin of life. It is possible that life evolved on Mars to be later eliminated as the atmospheric pressure dropped. Analysis of the surface of Mars for the traces of this early Martian biota could provide many insights into the phenomenon of life and its coupling to planetary evolution.
The outer solar system's planetary atmospheres, ionospheres, rings, and magnetic fields are under study in light of microwave telecommunications from the two Voyager spacecraft. The use of the hydrogen maser frequency standards on the ground, in conjunction with thermally controlled quartz oscillators aboard the spacecraft, ensures long coherence intervals and allows the application of novel signal processing methods. On this basis, studies of atmospheric structure and scintillation parameters, planetary ring structure, and magnetic control of small ionospheric irregularities have been undertaken; information concerning planetary evolution, composition, and dynamics is thereby obtained.
Major and trace elements in coexisting glass, olivines, and metal-sulfide spherules from a chilled margin sample of a strongly reduced basaltic dike from Disko Island, Greenland have been investigated. Three sets of partition coefficients are obtained, olivine/silicate liquid and metal-sulfide liquid/silicate liquid partition coefficients established at magmatic temperatures, and FeNi/FeS partition coefficients at lower temperatures. High metal-sulfide liquid/silicate liquid partition coefficients are found for Ni, Sb, As, Mo, Cu, Co, and W. The significance of the present results for planetary evolution and the formation of metal-rich or sulfide-rich metal cores is considered in terms of P, W, and Mo abundances in the mantles of the earth, moon, the Shergotty parent body, and the Eucrite parent body.
The intensive exploration of Mars is a major step in the systematic exploration of the solar system. Mars, earth, and Venus provide valuable contrasts in planetary evolution. Mars exploration has progressed through the stages of exploration and is now ready for a sample-return mission. About 5 kg of intelligently selected samples will be returned from Mars. A variety of samples are wanted. This requires accurate landing in areas of high interest, surface mobility and analytical capability, a variety of sampling tools, and stringent preservation and isolation measures.
The abstracts are presented on the topic of the origin of the Earth. The subject of planetary evolution from inner solar system plantesimals through the formation and composition of the Earth's atmosphere and the physical structure of the Earth and the Moon is explored in great variety.
The mechanisms involved in the formation of impact craters are examined theoretically, reviewing the results of recent investigations. Topics addressed include crater morphology, stress waves in solids, the contact and compression stage, the excavation stage, and ejecta deposits. Consideration is given to the scaling of crater dimensions, the crater modification stage, multiring basins, cratered landscapes, atmospheric interactions, and the implications of impact cratering for planetary evolution. Extensive diagrams, graphs, tables, and images of typical craters are provided.
The Committee on Planetary and Lunar Exploration (COMPLEX) has undertaken to review and revise the 1978 report Strategy for Exploration of the Inner Planets, 1977-1987. The committee has found the 1978 report to be generally still pertinent. COMPLEX therefore issues its new report in the form of an update. The committee reaffirms the basic objectives for exploration of the planets: to determine the present state of the planets and their satellites, to understand the processes active now and at the origin of the solar system, and to understand planetary evolution, including appearance of life and its relation to the chemical history of the solar system.
The Magellan spacecraft arrived at Venus on August 10, 1990 to begin global high-resolution radar image and altimeter mapping and gravity field determination of the planet. Mapping of this cloud covered planet is done from an elliptical orbit with a 3.15 hour period and a 275 km periapsis. After the initial checkout of the spacecraft, the primary missions lasts for 243 days (one Venus day); the time it takes for Venus to make one revolution beneath the spacecraft. The data collected by Magellan is expected to provide an understanding of the geological and geophysical nature of the planet Venus, and the general processes that control planetary evolution.
The Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) is an ultraviolet spectrometer which has been designed to exploit the imaging and pointing capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope. It will obtain observations of astronomical sources with greater spectral, spatial and temporal resolution than has been possible with previous space-based instruments. Data from the GHRS will be applicable to many types of scientific investigations, including studies of the interstellar medium, stellar winds, chromospheres and coronae, the byproducts and endproducts of stellar evolution, planetary atmospheres, comets, and many kinds of extragalactic sources. This handbook is intended to introduce the GHRS to potential users. The main purpose is to provide enough information to explore the feasibility of possible research projects and to plan, propose and execute a set of observations. An overview of the instrument performance, which should allow one to evaluate the suitability of the GHRS to specific projects, and a somewhat more detailed description of the GHRS hardware are given. How observing programs will be carried out, the various operating modes of the instrument, and the specific information about the performance of the instrument needed to plan an observation are discussed.
The Galileo Mission, rather than a 'Jupiter mission' per se, is an integrated project encompassing multidisciplinary objectives regarding the whole of the Jovian system. This system is important in view of insights it affords into the conditions of the early solar nebula, as well as into the complex, interacting processes involved in planetary evolution. Jupiter itself is the focus of interest in virtue of representing a transitional object between the terrestrial planets and stars; its composition may be virtually unaltered from that of the original solar nebula. The Jovian system in its entirety presents basic questions regarding its satellite and ring system, which constitute a 'minisolar system'. The Galileo spacecraft consists of an Orbiter and an atmospheric entry Probe.

Partial melting to generate the crust of a planet can create a buoyant residual layer at the top of the mantle which may have important implications for episodic planetary evolution. However, the rate of mixing of such a chemically buoyant layer with a thermally convecting mantle is an important unresolved question. Except for a few laboratory and numerical studies designed to address questions related to convection in the Earth's mantle, previous studies have generally treated on the mixing of passive tracers. The inhibiting role of chemical buoyancy on mixing is intuitively obvious but not fully understood quantitatively. In this study, we examine the dynamics of an intrinsically buoyant fluid layer at the top of a deeper, thermally convecting, infinite Prandtl number fluid that is heated from below.
