Hydropower technologies bolster high penetration of variable renewable energies (VREs) in the net zero emissions scenarios. Nevertheless, there are various challenges to meeting the ambitious goal, such as stability, reliability, resiliency, security, lack of reactive power, voltage support and inertia, large-scale storage deployment and coordination, interconnectedness, demand-side response, higher thermal cycles with increased start/stops, and inadequate Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) for system-wise VRE integration and profitability. This survey conducts a bottom-up analysis to unveil the opportunities to utilize hydropower facilities and disentangle the nested problem for intertwining design features, control algorithms, operation, optimization approaches, incentives, services, and market mechanisms using a three-pillar framework perspective: grid owners, power producers, and machine designers. The survey identified emerging trends in real-time and capacity markets, flexible power systems, and enhanced grid capabilities, including advanced voltage support and updated grid codes. These developments present significant opportunities for hydropower, such as achieving super-flexibility through hybridization, expanded reactive power capabilities, and advanced operational modes like a synchronous condenser and power adequator functionalities. These opportunities require novel design philosophies — including new winding, stator, and rotor configurations, optimized ventilation, and active cooling systems — to enhance performance under stressed grid and climate conditions. Finally, integrating climate and energy models for multi-basin optimization with finer spatial and temporal granularity enhances the planning accuracy for water management of hydropower while addressing environmental challenges. The review delivers helpful prospective suggestions and tools that would serve researchers, power engineers, and stakeholders in making decisions about hydropower technologies and services in 2050 and beyond.
Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is the major mineral phase in bone and teeth. The interaction of individual amino acids and citrate ions with different crystallographic HAP surfaces has remained uncertain for decades, creating a knowledge gap to rationally design interactions with peptides, proteins, and drugs. In this contribution, we quantify the binding mechanisms and binding free energies of the 20 end-capped natural amino acids and citrate ions on the basal (001) and prismatic (010)/(020) planes of hydroxyapatite at pH values of 7 and 5 for the first time at the molecular scale. We utilized over 1500 steered molecular dynamics simulations with highly accurate potentials that reproduce surface and hydration energies of (hkl) hydroxyapatite surfaces at different pH values. Charged residues demonstrate a much higher affinity to HAP than charge-neutral species due to the formation of superficial ion pairs and ease of penetration into layers of water molecules on the mineral surface. Binding free energies range from 0 to -60 kJ/mol and were determined with ~10% uncertainty. The highest affinity was found for citrate, followed by Asp(-) and Glu(-), and followed after a gap by Arg(+), Lys(+), as well as by His(+) at pH 5. The (hkl)-specific area density of calcium ions, the protonation state of phosphate ions, and subsurface directional order of the ions in HAP lead to surface-specific binding patterns. Amino acids without ionic side groups exhibit weak binding, between -3 and 0 kJ/mol, due to difficulties to penetrate the first layer of water molecules on the apatite surfaces. We explain recognition processes that remained elusive in experiments, in prior simulations, discuss agreement with available data, and reconcile conflicting interpretations. In conclusion, the findings can serve as useful input for the design of peptides, proteins, and drug molecules for the modification of bone and teeth-related materials, as well as control of apatite mineralization.
Here, the paper describes optical techniques and methods used to study growth mechanisms and phenomena occurring on multiple faces of real bulk crystals grown from aqueous and organic solutions. Using examples of ionic KDP and molecular trans-stilbene crystals, it shows how in-situ and ex-situ surface observations can be applied to identify growth structures characteristic for the dislocation, two-dimensional (2D), and 3D cluster deposition mechanisms. Results are analyzed and applied to understanding of defects origins and methods for their elimination in practical growth of large, high optical quality crystals.
Particle morphology is an emerging signature that has the potential to identify the processing history of unknown nuclear materials. Using readily available scanning electron microscopes (SEM), the morphology of nearly any solid material can be measured within hours. Coupled with robust image analysis and classification methods, the morphological features can be quantified and support identification of the processing history of unknown nuclear materials. The viability of this signature depends on developing databases of morphological features, coupled with a rapid data analysis and accurate classification process. With developed reference methods, datasets, and throughputs, morphological analysis can be applied within days to (i) interdicted bulk nuclear materials (gram to kilogram quantities), and (ii) trace amounts of nuclear materials detected on swipes or environmental samples. In conclusion, this review aims to develop validated and verified analytical strategies for morphological analysis relevant to nuclear forensics.
