Temperature-dependent complex dielectric permittivity: a simple measurement strategy for liquid-phase samples

Abstract Microwaves (MWs) are an emerging technology for intensified and electrified chemical manufacturing. MW heating is intimately linked to a material’s dielectric permittivity. These properties are highly dependent on temperature and pressure, but such datasets are not readily available due to the limited accessibility of the current methodologies to process-oriented laboratories. We introduce a simple, benchtop approach for producing these datasets near the 2.45 GHz industrial, medical, and scientific (ISM) frequency for liquid samples. By building upon a previously-demonstrated bireentrant microwave measurement cavity, we introduce larger pressure- and temperature-capable vials to deduce temperature-dependent permittivity quickly and accurately for vapor pressures up to 7 bar. Our methodology is validated using literature data, demonstrating broad applicability for materials with dielectric constant ε' ranging from 1 to 100. We provide new permittivity data for water, organic solvents, and hydrochloric acid solutions. Finally, we provide simple fits to our data for easy use.

In situ Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging of corrosion in a Co–Fe alloy microcrystal

Corrosion is a major concern for many industries, as corrosive environments can induce structural and morphological changes that lead to material dissolution and accelerate material failure. The progression of corrosion depends on nanoscale morphology, stress, and defects present. Experimentally monitoring this complex interplay is challenging. Here we implement in situ Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging (BCDI) to probe the dissolution of a Co-Fe alloy microcrystal exposed to hydrochloric acid (HCl). By measuring five Bragg reflections from a single isolated microcrystal at ambient conditions, we compare the full three-dimensional (3D) strain state before corrosion and the strain along the [111] direction throughout the corrosion process. We find that the strained surface layer of the crystal dissolves to leave a progressively less strained surface. Interestingly, the average strain closer to the centre of the crystal increases during the corrosion process. We determine the localised corrosion rate from BCDI data, revealing the preferential dissolution of facets more exposed to the acid stream, highlighting an experimental geometry effect. These results bring new perspectives to understanding the interplay between crystal strain, morphology, and corrosion; a prerequisite for the design of more corrosion-resistant materials.

The Coordination Chemistry and Stoichiometry of Extracted Diglycolamide Complexes of Lanthanides in Extraction Chromatography Materials

Industrial rare earth element (REE) separations predominantly utilize solvent extraction processes tailored toward conventional resources such as bastnäsite, monazite, and ion adsorption clays. Advances in diglycolamide (DGA) chemistry have shown effective extraction characteristics for REE separations. However, limitations associated with traditional DGA solvent extraction techniques, such as third-phase formation and gelling, have hindered commercial viability. By supporting DGA extractants on porous resins such as polystyrene divinyl benzene (PS-DVB), the desirable combination of solvent extraction selectivity and ease of operation of sorbent columns can be achieved. To design a low-cost model for such solid-supported DGAs, extraction characteristics as influenced by the underlying coordination chemistry must be explored to achieve efficient functional systems. Within this study, we report novel DGA resin materials, each incorporating one of the DGAs N,N,N’,N’-tetra-(1-octyl)-3-oxapentane-1,5-diamide (TODGA), N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dioctyl-3-oxapentane-1,5-diamide (DMDODGA), and 2,2'-oxybis(1-(3-(((2-ethylhexyl)thio)methyl)-4-methylpyrrolidin-1-yl)ethan-1-one) (DEHPDGA). The affinity of DGAs across the lanthanide (Ln) series was evaluated for both hydrochloric acid and nitric acid media with varying Ln feed concentrations to study distribution ratios and loading characteristics. Focusing on dysprosium, extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also utilized to explore coordination chemistry and their effects on ligand performance. The general trend for both acid media resulted in DMDODGA having the highest extraction strength of all three DGAs at varying acid concentrations. Coordination-chemistry analysis supported by loading data, DFT calculations, and EXAFS results under forced loading conditions posited less than the expected 3:1 ligand-to-metal coordination.

(NH 4 ) 2 [UO 2 Cl 4 ]·2H 2 O, a new uranyl tetrachloride with ammonium charge-balancing cations

A new uranyl tetrachloride salt with chemical formula, (NH 4 ) 2 [UO 2 Cl 4 ]·2H 2 O, namely, diammonium uranyl tetrachloride dihydrate, 1 , was prepared and crystallized via slow evaporation from a solution of 2 M hydrochloric acid. As confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, the title compound crystallizes with an ammonium chloride impurity that formed as a result of the breakdown of a triazine precursor. The (UO 2 Cl 4 ) 2− dianion is charge balanced by ammonium cations, while an extensive hydrogen-bond network donated from structural water molecules stabilize the overall assembly. Compound 1 adds to the extensive collection of actinyl tetrachloride salts, but it represents the first without an alkali cation for purely inorganic compounds. Diffuse reflectance and luminescence spectra show typical absorption and emission behavior, respectively, of uranyl materials.

Synthesis of mesoporous silica using a mineral silica source

Abstract Mesoporous silica has been applied in catalysis, separations, and drug delivery. It has generally been made using organosilicon precursors such as tetraethyl orthosilicate. For sustainability, it is necessary to find readily accessible mineral sources for making mesoporous silica. In this work, we demonstrate the successful synthesis of mesoporous silica with 10 nm average pore size using the mineral forsterite (Mg 2 SiO 4 ) as a silica source, providing a potentially cheaper and more Earth‐friendly route to making technologically important porous silica materials. Pure forsterite was synthesized by a solid‐state chemistry route at 1000°C and underwent dissolution–reprecipitation in aqueous hydrochloric acid containing the soft template surfactant, Pluronic P123. Variations of initial reaction pH (−0.2 to 0.6), reaction time (12–24 h), reaction temperature (50 to 90°C), and silica precursor (forsterite and fumed silica) were performed. The mesoporous silica aged at 70°C for 24 h had the highest porosity, with a surface area of 735 m 2 /g and a pore volume of 1.4 ml/g, comparable to mesoporous silica made using conventional starting materials. This novel geomimetic synthesis route supports the possibility of analogous formation of structured (mesoporous or zeolitic) silica in nature under abiotic or prebiotic conditions.
