High energy efficient solid state laser sources

Recent progress in the development of highly efficient coherent optical sources was reviewed. This work has focused on nonlinear frequency conversion of the highly coherent output of the non-planar ring laser oscillators developed earlier in the program, and includes high efficiency second harmonic generation and the operation of optical parametric oscillators for wavelength diversity and tunability.

Synthesis of organic salts with large second-order optical nonlinearities

The variation of the anion counterion in the presently formulated organic salts, whose cation possesses large molecular hyperpolarizability, will in many cases yield materials with large powder second-harmonic generation efficiencies. The highest such efficiency is three orders of magnitude greater than that of the urea used as a reference compound. It is demonstrated that such nonconventional donors as Br(-) and the pyrenyl moiety can be incorporated into molecules which, in the requisite crystallographic environment, will exhibit substantial bulk susceptibilities.

High resolution spectroscopy in the microwave and far infrared

High resolution rotational spectroscopy has long been central to remote sensing techniques in atmospheric sciences and astronomy. As such, laboratory measurements must supply the required data to make direct interpretation of data for instruments which sense atmospheres using rotational spectra. Spectral measurements in the microwave and far infrared regions are also very powerful tools when combined with infrared measurements for characterizing the rotational structure of vibrational spectra. In the past decade new techniques were developed which have pushed high resolution spectroscopy into the wavelength region between 25 micrometers and 2 mm. Techniques to be described include: (1) harmonic generation of microwave sources, (2) infrared laser difference frequency generation, (3) laser sideband generation, and (4) ultrahigh resolution interferometers.

New organic and organometallic salts for second-order nonlinear optics

A series of organometallic and organic salts, in which the cation has been designed to have a large molecular hyperpolarizability, has been prepared. Variation of the counterion (anion) in many cases leads to materials with large powder second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies, the highest of which is roughly 2000 times that of a urea reference.

Millimeter-wave monolithic diode-grid frequency multiplier

A semiconductor diode structure useful for harmonic generation of millimeter or submillimeter wave radiation from a fundamental input wave is fabricated on a GaAs substrate. A heavily doped layer of n(sup ++) GaAs is produced on the substrate and then a layer of intrinsic GaAs on said heavily doped layer on top of which a sheet of heavy doping (++) is produced. A thin layer of intrinsic GaAs grown over the sheet is capped with two metal contacts separated by a gap to produce two diodes connected back to back through the n(sup ++) layer for multiplication of frequency by an odd multiple. If only one metal contact caps the thin layer of intrinsic GaAs, the second diode contact is produced to connect to the n(sup ++) layer for multiplication of frequency by an even number. The odd or even frequency multiple is selected by a filter. A phased array of diodes in a grid will increase the power of the higher frequency generated.

Solid-state lasers for coherent communication and remote sensing

Work in the stabilization of monolithic Nd:YAG lasers and the application of these lasers to nonlinear optical frequency conversion is discussed. The intrinsic stability of semiconductor diode laser pumped solid state lasers has facilitated a number of demonstration in external resonant cavity harmonic generation and stable optical parametric oscillation. Relative laser frequency stabilization of 0.3 Hz was achieved, and absolute stability of a few hundred hertz is anticipated. The challenge is now to reproduce this frequency stability in the output of tunable nonlinear optical devices. Theoretical and experimental work toward this goal are continuing.

Nonlinear disturbances in a hypersonic laminar boundary layer

Three separate but similar experiments on the growth of naturally-occurring instability waves in the laminar boundary-layers on sharp cones at hypersonic Mach numbers have been conducted. Each provided clear evidence that the theoretically-predicted second mode of instability was responsible for high-amplitude wave trains observed to prevail upstream of boundary-layer transition to turbulence. However, each also seemed to reveal the presence of an additional instability not accounted for by the linear theory. Here, examination is made of the tape-recorded hot-wire anemometer signals of one experiment on a sharp cone at Mach 8 for evidence of nonlinearity, the finding of which would explain the presence of the additional mode as a consequence of harmonic generation. Several approaches for identification of the residual effects of nonlinearity are described and utilized. Also, a simplified model describing certain fluctuation characteristics has been developed. Altogether, the evidence of nonlinear wave development is found to be strong. Quantitative comparisons of linear theory to experiments must be made with caution when nonlinearity is present in the experiment.

Characterisation of frequency doubling in Eu(2+) doped aluminosilicate fibres

The results of a series of experiments on efficient second-harmonic generation in a fiber with a Eu(2+)-doped aluminosilicate core are reported. The fiber was prepared by the seeding method with CW mode-locked radiation at 1.06 micron and produced ultrastable peak conversion efficiencies of 0.001 during mode-locked readout. Experiments were performed to determine the IR preparation intensity dependence, the stability of the output, and the type of erasure mechanisms which occur. The results are compared with those of germanosilicate fibers and some similarities and differences are discussed.

Solid-state lasers for coherent communication and remote sensing

Semiconductor-diode laser-pumped solid-state lasers have properties that are superior to other lasers for the applications of coherent communication and remote sensing. These properties include efficiency, reliability, stability, and capability to be scaled to higher powers. We have demonstrated that an optical phase-locked loop can be used to lock the frequency of two diode-pumped 1.06 micron Nd:YAG lasers to levels required for coherent communication. Monolithic nonplanar ring oscillators constructed from solid pieces of the laser material provide better than 10 kHz frequency stability over 0.1 sec intervals. We have used active feedback stabilization of the cavity length of these lasers to demonstrate 0.3 Hz frequency stabilization relative to a reference cavity. We have performed experiments and analysis to show that optical parametric oscillators (OPO's) reproduce the frequency stability of the pump laser in outputs that can be tuned to arbitrary wavelengths. Another measurement performed in this program has demonstrated the sub-shot-noise character of correlations of the fluctuations in the twin output of OPO's. Measurements of nonlinear optical coefficients by phase-matched second harmonic generation are helping to resolve inconsistency in these important parameters.

Quantum-well diode frequency multipliers - Varistor case

Local oscillators for heterodyne receivers at submillimeter wavelengths are typically made using a fundamental source followed by a harmonic frequency multiplier. An investigation of the required circuit embedding conditions for a possible new harmonic generator, the quantum-well resonant-tunneling diode, is summarized. A low-frequency multiplier has been tested that employs the resistive nonlinearity of the device as opposed to the reactive nonlinearity. The results show good agreement between practice and theory.

Advances in nonlinear optical materials and devices

The recent progress in the application of nonlinear techniques to extend the frequency of laser sources has come from the joint progress in laser sources and in nonlinear materials. A brief summary of the progress in diode pumped solid state lasers is followed by an overview of progress in nonlinear frequency extension by harmonic generation and parametric processes. Improved nonlinear materials including bulk crystals, quasiphasematched interactions, guided wave devices, and quantum well intersubband studies are discussed with the idea of identifying areas of future progress in nonlinear materials and devices.

A 200 GHz tripler using single barrier varactor

The GaAs Schottky varactor diode is the nonlinear device most commonly used for submillimeter wave harmonic generation. Output power adequate to serve as a local oscillator source for SIS tunnel junctions has been demonstrated with whisker-contacted GaAs Schottky varactor multipliers in waveguide mounts up to about 800 GHz. In this paper, we present results for a tripler to 200 GHz using a new multiplier device, the single barrier varactor (SBV). This new varactor has a potential advantages such as stronger nonlinearities or special symmetry, which make it attractive for submillimeter wave frequency multiplication. The performance of a tripler using a SBV over a output frequency range from 186 to 207 GHz has been measured in a crossed waveguide mount. The theoretical performance of the device has been calculated using large signal analysis. A comparison of theoretical and measured results and a discussion of various losses in the mount and the varactor have also been presented.

Novel heterojunction varactors

An account is given of new varactor multiplier designs, for mm-wave and sub-mm-wave receiver systems, which have their bases in heterostructure layers and exhibit either stronger capacitance nonlinearity or a special symmetry of characteristics. While barrier-n-layer-n(+) C-V characteristics yield superior performance at low pump powers, the symmetric C-V characteristics of the single-barrier varactor devices yield efficient low-order harmonic generation. Capacitance nonlinearity in these devices is due to depletion of a semiconductor drift region.

Ground based experiments on the growth and characterization of L-Arginine Phosphate (LAP) crystals

L-Arginine Phosphate (LAP) is a new nonlinear optical material with higher efficiency for harmonic generation compared to KDP. Crystals of LAP were grown in the laboratory from supersaturated solutions by temperature lowering technique. Investigations revealed the presence of large dislocation densities inside the crystals which are observed to produce refractive index changes causing damage at high laser powers. This is a result of the convection during crystal growth from supersaturated solutions. It is proposed to grow these crystals in a diffusion controlled growth condition under microgravity environment and compare the crystals grown in space with those grown on ground. Physical properties of the solutions needed for modelling of crystal growth are also presented.

Relation between bond-length alternation and second electronic hyperpolarizability of conjugated organic molecules

The solvent dependence of the second hyperpolarizability, gamma, of a variety of unsaturated organic compounds has been measured by third harmonic generation at 1907 nanometers. It is seen that the measured gamma is a function of solvent polarity. These solvent-dependent hyperpolarizabilities are associated with changes in molecular geometry from a highly bond-length alternated, polyenelike structure for a formyl-substituted compound in nonpolar solvents, to a cyaninelike structure, with little bond-length alternation, for a dicyanovinyl-substituted compound in polar solvents. By tuning bond-length alternation, gamma can be optimized in either a positive or negative sense for polymethine dyes of a given conjugation length.
