Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Computational Study on Microsolvated [B 10 H 10 ] 2– Clusters and Comparisons to Their [B 12 H 12 ] 2– Analogues

Microhydrated closo-Boranes have attracted great interests due to their superchaotropic activity related to well-known Hofmeister effect and important applications in biomedical and battery fields. In this work, we report a combined negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical investigation on hydrated closo-decaborate clusters [B 10 H 10 ] 2- ·nH 2 O (n = 1 – 7) with a direct comparison to their analogues [B 12 H 12 ] 2- ·nH 2 O and free water clusters. A single H 2 O molecule is found sufficient to stabilize the intrinsically unstable [B 10 H 10 ] 2- dianion. The first two water molecules strongly interact with the solute forming B-H···H-O dihydrogen bonds while additional water molecules show substantially reduced binding energies. Unlike [B 12 H 12 ] 2- ·nH 2 O possessing highly structured water network with the attached H 2 O molecules arranged in a unified pattern by maximizing B-H···H-O dihydrogen bonding, distinct structural arrangements of the water clusters within [B 10 H 10 ] 2– ·nH 2 O are achieved with the water cluster networks from trimer to heptamer resembling free water clusters. Such a distinct difference arises from the variations in size, symmetry, and charge distributions between these two dianions. Finally, the present finding again confirms the structural diversity of hydrogen-bonding networks in microhydrated closo-boranes and enrich our understanding of aqueous borate chemistry.

Understanding Hydrogenation Chemistry at MgB 2 Reactive Edges from Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics

Solid-state hydrogen storage materials often operate via transient, multistep chemical reactions at complex interfaces that are difficult to capture. Here, we use direct ab initio molecular dynamics simulations at accelerated temperatures and hydrogen pressures to probe the hydrogenation chemistry of the candidate material MgB 2 without a priori assumption of reaction pathways. Focusing on highly reactive ($10\overline{1}0$) edge planes where initial hydrogen attack is likely to occur, we track mechanistic steps toward the formation of hydrogen-saturated BH 4 – units and key chemical intermediates, involving H 2 dissociation, generation of functionalities and molecular complexes containing BH 2 and BH 3 motifs, and B–B bond breaking. Further, the genesis of higher-order boron clustering is also observed. Different charge states and chemical environments at the B-rich and Mg-rich edge planes are found to produce different chemical pathways and preferred speciation, with implications for overall hydrogenation kinetics. The reaction processes rely on B–H bond polarization and fluctuations between ionic and covalent character, which are critically enabled by the presence of Mg 2+ cations in the nearby interphase region. Our results provide guidance for devising kinetic improvement strategies for MgB 2 -based hydrogen storage materials, while also providing a template for exploring chemical pathways in other solid-state energy storage reactions.

Co(H2Cl)2H2 is Modderite-like structured and crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/m space group. The structure is zero-dimensional and consists of two hydrogen molecules and two Co(H2Cl)2 clusters. In each Co(H2Cl)2 cluster, Co2+ is bonded in a hexagonal planar geometry to four equivalent H and two equivalent Cl1- atoms. All Co–H bond lengths are 1.64 Å. Both Co–Cl bond lengths are 2.14 Å. H is bonded in a 1-coordinate geometry to one Co2+ and one H atom. The H–H bond length is 0.82 Å. Cl1- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Co2+ atom.

Materials Data on ZnH6(NO3)2 by Materials Project

ZnH4H2(NO3)2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pnma space group. The structure is zero-dimensional and consists of four hydrogen molecules, eight nitric acid molecules, and four ZnH4 clusters. In each ZnH4 cluster, Zn2+ is bonded in a square co-planar geometry to four H1+ atoms. There are a spread of Zn–H bond distances ranging from 1.54–1.58 Å. There are three inequivalent H1+ sites. In the first H1+ site, H1+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Zn2+ atom. In the second H1+ site, H1+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Zn2+ atom. In the third H1+ site, H1+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Zn2+ atom.
