Ionospheric disturbances caused by long period sound waves generated by Saturn-Apollo launches

Wavelike disturbances were observed in the ionosphere following several nuclear explosions in early 1960's. Supersonic shock waves within the atmosphere generated by large rockets can cause ionospheric electron density perturbations. A CW phase path Doppler array in the New York area was operated during the Saturn-Apollo 12 and 13 launches and recorded Doppler frequency fluctuations due to rocket launchings. Cross correlation and power spectral analyses of the phase path-path Doppler frequency variation records showed that the phase velocities of the signal arrivals were from south of the array with 700 - 800 m/sec corresponding to periods in the range of 2 to 4 minutes. Ionograms taken every 60 seconds from Wallops Islands showed clearly ionospheric disturbances due to rockets. The group velocities were estimated to be of the order of 450 m/sec 1 obtained from the earliest visible disturbances seen on CW phase path Doppler records and ionograms together with the rocket trajectory data.

Status of and Scientific Results from the ISIS-I Topside Digital Ionogram Data Enhancement Project

Selected original analog telemetry tapes from three of the topside-sounder satellites of the International Satellites for Ionospheric Studies (ISIS) program, namely Alouette 2, ISIS I, and ISIS II, were used in an earlier project to produce more than million digital topside ionograms; the resulting digital topside ionograms from ISIS II were used to produce morethan 86,000 globally-distributed vertical topside ionospheric electron density profiles Ne(h)that cover a time span of more than a solar cycle. These Ne(h) were produced using the TOPIST auto-scaling software. Before attempting to automatically process Alouette-2 orISIS-I ionograms a data-enhancement project was initiated so as to increase the auto processing success rate. These enhancements were mainly to correct problems that often occurred during the analog-to-digital conversion of the original telemetry tapes. Here we present the status of, and results from, this ongoing enhancement effort.

Effects of EMIC Wave-Driven Proton Precipitation on the Ionosphere

In this report we investigate the proton precipitation caused by electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves and its impact on the ionosphere with the self-consistent ring current-atmosphere interactions model (RAM-SCBE) coupled with an ionospheric particle transport model Global Airglow (GLOW). The EMIC wave diffusion process causes significant precipitation of tens of keV protons, particularly in the afternoon to midnight sector. These precipitating energetic protons further impact the ionosphere-thermosphere and contribute to the ionization in the E/F regions. The integrated auroral conductance is significantly enhanced in the dusk-to-midnight sector. Although the EMIC waves do not directly interact with the ring current electrons, after the EMIC wave scattering included in the model, remarkable changes are found in the global distribution of precipitating electron flux. This means that the addition of proton precipitation driven by EMIC waves results in feedback effects on the ring current electron dynamics through the circulation system. Validation is also conducted by comparing the simulated precipitation flux and ionospheric electron density with observations.
