The double quasar Q0957 + 561 A, B - A gravitational lens image formed by a galaxy at z = 0.39

Deep CCD pictures show a rich cluster of galaxies around the double quasar Q0957 + 561 as well as faint extended wings on the image of the southern quasar. Calculations of gravitational imaging by King model mass distributions show that the cluster and the brightest galaxy together, acting as a gravitational lens on the light from a single, more distant QSO, can easily reproduce all of the present observations. It is concluded that the double quasar is almost certainly the multiple image of a single object produced by a gravitational lens.

2237 + 0305 - A new and unusual gravitational lens

A new gravitational lens system has been discovered which consists of a quasar at z = 1.695 nearly centered on a 15-mag spiral galaxy, 2237 + 0305, at z = 0.0394. At 2 arcsec resolution, only a single optical image of the quasar is visible; its centroid is located within approximately 0.3 arcsec of the center of the galaxy. 'Snapshot' observations at the VLA yielded no detectable radio radiation, placing an upper limit of about 0.5 mJy on the combined flux density of the galaxy and quasar at a wavelength of 6 cm. A simple gravitational lens model that accounts for these observations is discussed.

An apparent gravitational lens with an image separation of 2.6 arc min

Observations are reported which confirm Paczynski's 1986 speculation that the previously known (Arp and Hazard, 1980) pair of 19th magnitude quasars 1146+111B,C are actually two images of a single object produced by a gravitational lens. The image split is 157 arcsec, more than 20 times greater than any previously reported, thus indicating an exceptionally massive lensing object. The data supporting the lens hypothesis are remarkably similar, high signal-to-noise, moderate resolution spectra of the two components. Both spectra show strong Mg II 2798-angstrom emission at z = 1.012 plus or minus 0.001 with indistinguishable redshifts (delta v = 126 plus or minus 309 km/s), widths (FWHM = 64 plus or minus 4 angstroms) and detailed profile shapes. Both spectra also show broad troughs at 6180 angstroms and several weaker continuum features. Neither object exhibits the O II 3727-A forbidden line which is frequently strong in Mg II emission objects. If the foreground galaxy clustering apparent in a deep R band charge-coupled device image proves insufficient to explain the large image splitting, other possibilities such as massive dark objects (e.g. a black hole of about 10 to the 15th solar masses) or a cosmic string may be indicated.

New properties of afocal lens pairs with Gaussian beams

Some unexpected properties of Gaussian beams when they are used with afocal lens pairs are presented. It is shown that the output confocal parameter is simply equal to the input confocal parameter multiplied by the square of the magnification of the afocal lens pair. It is not a function of the location of the input beam waist. Applications of these analytical results are discussed in a general way, and one particular application is discussed in detail.

High-resolution CCD imaging and derived gravitational lens models of 2237+0305

Images of the gravitational lens 2237+0305 acquired in good seeing have resolved the system into at least five components within the central few arsec of the object: the galaxy nucleus and four point sources in a ringlike formation approximately centered on the galaxy. It is found that the four point sources are distinctly bluer than the galaxy, but that they do not have identical colors. The observed configuration is well reproduced by a simple model that assumes that the four objects are images of the quasar and that the lens is a constant mass-to-light ratio, elliptical, de Vaucouleurs bulge.

'Flux conservation' by a Schwarzschild gravitational lens

It is demonstrated, by an explicit calculation, that a single, isolated Schwarzschild gravitational lens leads to a vanishing net total amplification on its own, without any 'help' from other lenses. It is shown that, in the limit of small M/R (where M is the mass of the lens in geometrical units and R is the distance from the source to the observers), the positive net total amplification, obtained from the classical approximation of the amplification for small impact angle lensing, is balanced by a negative net total amplification from the first-order term in M/R in an approximation of the amplification for large impact angle lensing derived here. The relation of these results to the common interpretation of average flux conservation by gravitational lenses is discussed as due to the collective action of many lenses in a cosmological framework.

VLBI observations of the 0957 + 561 gravitational lens system

A series of VLBI observations of the gravitational lens system 0957 + 561 at a wavelength of 13 cm has yielded the positions of the A and B images, the relative magnification of their largest discernible radio structures, and the time variability of their smallest discernible radio structures. These observations have also allowed upper limits to be placed on the flux density of an expected third image. The positions and relative magnification of the A and B images provide new information with which to constrain models of the lens that forms the images. The detection of variations in the flux densities of the cores of A and B suggests that observations at shorter wavelengths may reveal superluminal motion, which may in turn provide a means to measure the relative time delay.

An investigation of microstructural characteristics of contact-lens polymers

The free volume and gas permeability in several contact lens specimens were measured as part of a Space Commercialization Program. Free volume was measured using positron lifetime spectroscopy, while permeability for O2, N2, CO2 gases was measured using mass spectrometry and polarography. Permeability for all gases increases with the mean free volume cell size in the test samples. As might be expected, the specimens with the highest free volume fraction also exhibit the lowest Rockwell Hardness Number. An interesting corollary is the finding that the presence of fluorine atoms in the lens chemical structure inhibits filling up of their free volume cells. This is expected to allow the lenses to breathe freely while in actual use.

Mini-dome Fresnel lens photovoltaic concentrator development

Since 1986 work on a new high-performance, light-weight space photovoltaic concentration array has been conducted. An update on the mini-dome lens concentrator array development program is provided. Recent prototype cell and lens test results indicate that near-term array performance goals of 300 w/sq m and 100 w/kg are feasible, and that a longer-term goal of 200 w/kg is reasonable.

Reluctant glass formers and their applications in optical lens design

Over ten years ago, it was shown that glasses with high index of refraction and some with low dispersion could be produced from a number of pure refractory oxides, including the lanthanides, by containerless processing. By containerless processing it is possible to minimize surface heterogeneous nucleation and produce larger glass samples of the materials than by other methods. The use of proposed high temperature containerless processing facilities in space permits the fabrication of benchmark samples of new unique glass compositions for optical property determination as well as for glass formation. It was shown that glasses with high refractive indices and large Abbe numbers can be formulated using this technology. These glasses lie in the classical forbidden region of the glass map. Preliminary study of the impact of having such unusual glasses available for the lens designer was made. Results indicate that significant improvements can be realized over the use of only conventional glasses. A cursory survey of a number of nationally recognized lens designers indicated a general agreement that such glasses would be highly desired and could be expected to lead to completely new designs as well as simplifying existing designs.

Component and prototype panel testing of the mini-dome Fresnel lens photovoltaic concentrator array

The mini-dome Fresnel lens concentrator array, a high-efficiency, lightweight space photovoltaic array concept, is described. The three critical elements of the array concept are the Fresnel lens concentrator, the prismatic cell power cover, and the photovoltaic cell. Prototype concentrator lenses have been fabricated and tested, with optical efficiencies reaching 90 percent. Work is progressing on the design and fabrication of the panel structure. The impact of recent advances in 30 percent-efficient multijunction photovoltaic cells on array performance is also discussed. Near-term performance goals of 300 w/sq m and 100 w/kg are now feasible.

High altitude AM0 testing of PV concentrator lens elements

Recently, the NASA Lewis Research Center modified its Lear High Altitude Test Facility to fly two prototype ENTECH minidome Fresnel lens photovoltaic concentrator elements. The tests were highly successful, and the results verified the ability of the Lear High Altitude Facility to measure the optical performance of individual concentrator lens elements and concentrator/cell combinations at near AM0 insolation conditions. The two concentrator lenses flown achieved optical efficiencies, based on a gallium arsenide concentrator cell response, of 89.8 percent and 90.0 percent. The flights demonstrated the ability of the aircraft to maintain the pointing accuracy required to obtain useful data. With proper alignment of the collimating tube and the pilot's sunsight, this facility could easily maintain a pointing accuracy of + or - 0.5 deg for a sufficiently long time to obtain accurate, reproducible results.

The mini-dome Fresnel lens photovoltaic concentrator array - Current program status

Over the last seven years, NASA Lewis, ENTECH, and Boeing have been developing a high-efficiency, lightweight space photovoltaic concentrator array. The authors report the current status of the mini-dome Fresnel lens concentrator program, emphasizing the latest results on the fabrication and testing of a space-qualifiable version of the concentrator lens and panel structure. Calculations indicated that such an array can achieve 300 W/sq m at a specific power of 100 W/kg. The authors describe the current status of component and prototype panel testing and the preliminary development of a flight panel for the Photovoltaic Array Space Power Plus Diagnostics (PASP Plus) flight experiment.

A high-performance photovoltaic concentrator array - The mini-dome Fresnel lens concentrator with 30 percent efficient GaAs/GaSb tandem cells

A high-efficiency, lightweight space photovoltaic concentrator array is described. Previous work on the minidome Fresnel lens concentrator concept is being integrated with Boeing's 30 percent efficient tandem GaAs/GaSb concentrator cells into a high-performance photovoltaic array. Calculations indicate that, in the near term, such an array can achieve 300 W/sq m at a specific power of 100 W/kg. Emphasis of the program has now shifted to integrating the concentrator lens, tandem cell, and supporting panel structure into a space-qualifiable array. A description is presented of the current status of component and prototype panel testing and the development of a flight panel for the Photovoltaic Array Space Power Plus Diagnostics (PASP PLUS) flight experiment.

Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera imaging of the gravitational lens 2237 + 0305

Images of the gravitational lens system 2237 + 0305, taken with the HST Wide Field Camera, are analyzed. Positions for the four quasar images, accurate to +/-0.015 arcsec, and relative magnitudes in U and R, accurate to +/-0.06 and 0.04 mag, respectively, are determined. The upper limits on the observed brightness of the fifth image are found to be less than or approximately equal to 7 percent of the brightest quasar image. The mass of the lens inside 0.9 arcsec is found to be 1.08 +/-0.02 x 10 exp 10 solar masses/h100 corresponding to a mass-to-light ratio in B of 12.3h100. This solar mass/solar luminosity estimate agrees with values obtained from stellar dynamics for other elliptical galaxies. A comparison of predictions from this mass model with the measured central velocity dispersion yields a distance-independent agreement to within 10 percent, assuming isotropic velocity dispersions.

The development and testing of the Lens Antenna Deployment Demonstration (LADD) test article

The USAF Rome Laboratory and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, through contract to Grumman Corporation, have developed a space-qualifiable test article for the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization to demonstrate the critical structural and mechanical elements of single-axis roll-out membrane deployment for Space Based Radar (SBR) applications. The Lens Antenna Deployment Demonstration (LADD) test article, originally designed as a shuttle-attached flight experiment, is a large precision space structure which is representative of operational designs for space-fed lens antennas. Although the flight experiment was cancelled due to funding constraints and major revisions in the Strategic Defense System (SDS) architecture, development of this test article was completed in June 1989. To take full advantage of the existence of this unique structure, a series of ground tests are proposed which include static, dynamic, and thermal measurements in a simulated space environment. An equally important objective of these tests is the verification of the analytical tools used to design and develop large precision space structures.
