Digital Quantum Simulation of the Schwinger Model and Symmetry Protection with Trapped Ions

Tracking the dynamics of physical systems in real time is a prime application of quantum computers. Using a trapped-ion system with up to six qubits, we simulate the real-time dynamics of a lattice gauge theory in 1+1 dimensions, i.e., the lattice Schwinger model, and demonstrate nonperturbative effects such as pair creation for times much longer than previously accessible. We study the gate requirement of two formulations of the model using the Suzuki-Trotter product formula, as well as the trade-off between errors from the ordering of the Hamiltonian terms, the Trotter step size, and experimental imperfections. To mitigate experimental errors, a recent symmetry-protection protocol for suppressing coherent errors and a symmetry-inspired postselection scheme are applied. This work demonstrates the integrated theoretical, algorithmic, and experimental approach that is essential for efficient simulation of lattice gauge theories and other complex physical systems.

Entanglement entropy across the lattice-continuum correspondence

This paper revisits the standard calculations of free field entanglement entropy in light of the newly developed lattice-continuum correspondence. This correspondence prescribes an explicit method to extract an approximately continuum quantum field theory out of a fully regularized lattice theory. This prescription will here be extended to subregion algebras, and it will be shown how entropies of continuum boson and fermion theories can be computed by working purely with lattice quantities. This gives a clear picture of the origin of divergences in entanglement entropy while also presenting a concise and detailed recipe for calculating this important quantity in continuum theories.

Primitive quantum gates for an S U ( 2 ) discrete subgroup: Binary tetrahedral

We construct a primitive gate set for the digital quantum simulation of the binary tetrahedral ($\mathbb{BT}$) group on two quantum architectures. This nonabelian discrete group serves as a crude approximation to $SU(2)$ lattice gauge theory while requiring five qubits or one quicosotetrit per gauge link. The necessary basic primitives are the inversion gate, the group multiplication gate, the trace gate, and the $\mathbb{BT}$ Fourier transform over $\mathbb{BT}$. We experimentally benchmark the inversion and trace gates on ibm nairobi, with estimated fidelities between $14-55\%$, depending on the input state.

Lattice study of correlators of chromoelectric fields for heavy quarkonium dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma

We perform a lattice calculation of the correlators of two chromoelectric fields in the adjoint representation connected by adjoint Wilson lines at nonzero temperature. These correlators arise in the study of quarkonium dynamics and of adjoint heavy quark diffusion in deconfined matter. We work in SU(3) gauge theory using either gradient flow or multilevel algorithms for noise reduction, and discuss the renormalization of the correlators on the lattice. We find that a Casimir factor rescaling relates the adjoint correlators corresponding to the diffusion of an adjoint heavy quark and the octet-octet quarkonium transitions to the chromoelectric correlator in the fundamental representation describing the diffusion of a heavy quark.
