Additional line of sight methodology to that presented by John W. Strohbehn in the use of line of sight microwave propagation in remote atmospheric probing

Some additional microwave and infrared techniques are reported which are being tested in line-of-sight tropospheric scattering. Newly measured parameters of the incoherent scattered microwave field are sensitive to wavefront sphericity, to wind speed, and to the eddy wavenumber spectrum. A recommendation for advancing the state of the art is given by a proposed experimental program.

Forbidden-line excitation data for certain coronal lines

Some new data pertinent to forbidden transitions for coronal lines of S XII, Ca XIII, K XI, Mn XIII, Fe XIV, Co XV, Ni XVI, N XV, Cr IX, Fe X, and Ni XII are presented. We include additional calculations of collision strengths for a number of ions and then set up and solve the equations of statistical equilibrium in the limiting approximations in which contributions to level population by cascade from higher levels are neglected. We then calculate volume emissivities per ion as a function of density and temperature.

Stratospheric HNO3 quantification from line-by-line nonlinear least-squares analysis of high-resolution balloon-borne solar absorption spectra in the 870/cm region

Line parameters for the nu(5) and 2nu(9) bands and associated hot bands of HNO3 have been calculated and compared with laboratory spectra, and the results are presented. Spectral intervals near 870/cm for which best agreement was obtained are used to quantitatively analyze HNO3 absorption features in 0.02/cm resolution stratospheric solar absorption spectra.

Instabilities in line-driven stellar winds. III - Wave propagation in the case of pure line absorption

The spatial and temporal evolution of small-amplitude velocity perturbations is examined in the idealized case of a stellar wind that is driven by pure line absorption of the star's continuum radiation. It is established that the instability in the supersonic region is of the advective type relative to the star, but of the absolute type relative to the wind itself. It is also shown that the inward propagation of information in such a wind is limited to the sound speed, in contrast to the theory of Abbott, which predicts inward propagation faster than sound. This apparent contradiction is resolved through an extensive discussion of the analytically soluble case of zero sound speed.

Different regions of line formation in the envelope of the early emission line star HD 190073

A description is presented of the spectral features that characterize the spectrum of HD 190073 both in the photographic region (360-660 nm), and in the IUE UV (115-320 nm). A number of different types of profiles can be distinguished, and this seems to imply that many different 'broad' regions of line formation coexist in the extended envelope of the star, including regions with densities differing in several orders of magnitude.

Solar active region physical parameters inferred from a thermal cyclotron line and soft X-ray spectral lines

Simultaneous high-resolution observations of coronal loops were made at the 20-cm wavelength with the VLA and at soft X-ray wavelengths with the SMM FCS. The images obtained at both wavelengths have nearly identical sizes and ellipsoidal shapes, with the emission stretching between and across regions of opposite magnetic polarity in the underlying photosphere. The results indicate that the radiation at 20 cm and soft X-ray wavelengths originates from the same region, and that 20 cm maps can image X-ray coronal loops. The X-ray spectral lines were used to obtain values of electron temperature, T(e), of about 2.6 x 10 to the 6th K and electron density, N(e), of about 3.1 x 10 to the 9th/cu cm. These parameters were used to show that the layers emitting 20-cm radiation can be optically thick to either thermal bremsstrahlung or thermal gyroresonance radiation, depending upon unknown but plausible values of loop thickness, magnetic scale height, and magnetic field strength.

Seyfert galaxy ultraviolet emission-line intensities and variability - A self-consistent photoionization analysis applied to broad-line-emitting gas in NGC 3783

Well-constrained photoionization models for the Seyfert I galaxy NGC 3783 are developed. Both cross-correlation analyses and line variability trends with varying ionizing radiation flux require a multicomponent picture. All the data for He II 1640 A, C IV 1549 A, and semiforbidden C III 1909 A can be reasonably well reproduced by two cloud components. One has a source-cloud distance of 24 lt-days, gas density around 3 x 10 exp 10/cu cm, ionization parameter range of 0.04-0.2, and cloud thickness such that about half of the carbon is doubly ionized and about half is triply ionized. The other component is located approximately 96 lt-days from the source, is shielded from the source by the inner cloud, has a density about 3 x 10 to the 9th/cu cm, and is characterized by an ionization parameter range of 0.001-0.03, The cloud thickness is such that about 45 percent carbon is doubly ionized and about 55 percent is singly ionized.

The Hubble Space Telescope quasar absorption line key project. II - Data calibration and absorption-line selection

We present the observational and data processing aspects of the Hubble Space Telescope Quasar Absorption Line Key Project. Topics discussed include the observational technique, calibration of the data, software that simulates the data, the automated procedure used to identify and characterize the absorption features, and the determination of the sensitivity limits of the survey.

An improved quasistatic line-shape theory: The effects of molecular motion on the line wings

A theory is presented for the modification of the line-shape functions and absorption coefficient due to the breakdown of the quasistatic approximation. This breakdown arises from the effects of molecular motion and increases the absorption in the near wings. Numerical calculations for the high-frequency wing of the nu(sub 3) band of CO2 broadened by Ar are reported and it is shown that these effects are significant near the bandhead. The importance of such corrections in other spectral regions and for other systems is discussed briefly.

GRIS detection of Al-26 1809 keV line emission from the Galactic center region as a broad line

The gamma ray imaging spectrometer (GRIS) was used to observe the 1809 keV emission from the Galactic center region. The observed line is broader than the instrument resolution. The measured intrinsic width is 5.4 +/- 1.4 keV full width half medium, which is more than three times the maximum Doppler broadening expected due to Galactic rotation. The detection of such a wide feature, suggesting a high dispersion velocity has implications for the origin of Galactic Al-26. It suggests a supernova explosion origin or a Wolf-Rayet stellar wind origin of Al-26. The fact that the Al-26 has not come to rest after 10(exp 6) years presents a challenge to the current understanding of the Al-26 production and propagation in the Galaxy.

CHIANTI-An Atomic Database for Emission Lines. XV. Version 9, Improvements for the X-Ray Satellite Lines

CHIANTI contains a large quantity of atomic data for the analysis of astrophysical spectra. Programs are available in IDL and Python to perform calculation of the expected emergent spectrum from these sources. The database includes atomic energy levels, wavelengths, radiative transition probabilities, rate coefficients for collisional excitation, ionization, and recombination, as well as data to calculate free–free, free–bound, and two-photon continuum emission. In Version 9, we improve the modeling of the satellite lines at X-ray wavelengths by explicitly including autoionization and dielectronic recombination processes in the calculation of level populations for select members of the lithium isoelectronic sequence and Fe XVIII–XXIII. In addition, existing data sets are updated, new ions are added, and new total recombination rates for several Fe ions are included. All data and IDL programs are freely available at http://www.chiantidatabase.org or through SolarSoft, and the Python code ChiantiPy is also freely available at https://github.com/chianti-atomic/ChiantiPy.
