pLiner

Compiler optimizations can alter significantly the numerical results of scientific computing applications. When numerical results differ significantly between compilers, optimization levels, and floating-point hardware, these numerical inconsistencies can impact programming productivity. pLiner is a framework that helps programmers identify locations in the source code that are highly affected by compiler optimizations. pLiner uses a novel approach to identify such code locations by enhancing the floatingpoint precision of variables and expressions. Using a guided search to locate the most significant code regions, pLiner can report to users such locations at different granularities, file, function, and line of code.

Prospects for Light Dark Matter Searches at Large-Volume Neutrino Detectors

We propose a new approach to search for light dark matter (DM), with keV–GeV mass, via inelastic nucleus scattering at large-volume neutrino detectors such as Borexino, DUNE, Super-K, Hyper-K, and JUNO. The approach uses inelastic nuclear scattering of cosmic-ray boosted DM, enabling a low-background search for DM in these experiments. Large neutrino detectors, with higher thresholds than dark matter detectors, can be used, since the nuclear deexcitation lines are O ( 10 ) MeV . Using a hadrophilic dark-gauge-boson-portal model as a benchmark, we show that the nuclear inelastic channels generally provide better sensitivity than the elastic scattering for a large region of light DM parameter space. No Escaping Helium from 55 Cnc e

We search for escaping helium from the hot super-Earth 55 Cnc e by taking high-resolution spectra of the 1083 nm line during two transits using Keck/NIRSPEC. We detect no helium absorption down to a 90% upper limit of 250 ppm in excess absorption or 0.27 mÅ in equivalent width. This corresponds to a mass-loss rate of less than ∼10{sup 9} g s{sup −1} assuming a Parker wind model with a plausible exosphere temperature of 5000–6000 K, although the precise constraint is heavily dependent on model assumptions. We consider both hydrogen- and helium-dominated atmospheric compositions and find similar bounds on the mass-loss rate in both scenarios. Our hydrodynamical models indicate that if a lightweight atmosphere exists on 55 Cnc e, our observations would have easily detected it. Together with the nondetection of Lyα absorption by Ehrenreich et al., our helium nondetection indicates that 55 Cnc e either never accreted a primordial atmosphere in the first place or lost its primordial atmosphere shortly after the dissipation of the gas disk.

Changing-look Active Galactic Nuclei from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. I. Sample from the Early Data

Changing-look active galactic nuclei (CL AGNs) can be generally confirmed by the emergence (turn-on) or disappearance (turn-off) of broad emission lines (BELs), associated with a transient timescale (about 100 ~ 5000 days) that is much shorter than predicted by traditional accretion disk models. We carry out a systematic CL AGN search by crossmatching the spectra coming from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Following previous studies, we identify CL AGNs based on Hα, Hβ, and Mg ii at z ≤ 0.75 and Mg ii, C iii], and C iv at z > 0.75. We present 56 CL AGNs based on visual inspection and three selection criteria, including 2 Hα, 34 Hβ, 9 Mg ii, 18 C iii], and 1 C iv CL AGN. Eight cases show simultaneous appearances/disappearances of two BELs. We also present 44 CL AGN candidates with significant flux variation of BELs, but remaining strong broad components. In the confirmed CL AGNs, 10 cases show additional CL candidate features for different lines. In this paper, we find: (1) a 24:32 ratio of turn-on to turn-off CL AGNs; (2) an upper-limit transition timescale ranging from 330 to 5762 days in the rest frame; and (3) the majority of CL AGNs follow the bluer-when-brighter trend. Our results greatly increase the current CL census (~30%) and would be conducive to exploring the underlying physical mechanism.

New constraints on ultraheavy dark matter from the LZ experiment

Searches for dark matter with liquid xenon time projection chamber experiments have traditionally focused on the region of the parameter space that is characteristic of weakly interacting massive particles, ranging from a few GeV / c 2 to a few TeV / c 2 . Models of dark matter with a mass much heavier than this are well motivated by early production mechanisms different from the standard thermal freeze-out, but they have generally been less explored experimentally. In this work, we present a reanalysis of the first science run of the LZ experiment, with an exposure of 0.9 tonne × yr , to search for ultraheavy particle dark matter. The signal topology consists of multiple energy deposits in the active region of the detector forming a straight line, from which the velocity of the incoming particle can be reconstructed on an event-by-event basis. Zero events with this topology were observed after applying the data selection calibrated on a simulated sample of signal-like events. New experimental constraints are derived, which rule out previously unexplored regions of the dark matter parameter space of spin-independent interactions beyond a mass of 10 17 GeV / c 2 . Multi-genome Phage Annotation Toolkit and Evaluator

Summary: To address the need for improved tools for annotation and comparative genomics of bacteriophage genomes, we developed multiPhATE2. As an extension of the multiPhATE code, multiPhATE2 includes comparative genomics codes for gene matching among sets of input bacteriophage genomes, and scales well to large input data sets due to incorporation of multiprocessing in the functional annotation and comparative genomics subsystems. Furthermore, additional search algorithms and databases have been added to the functional annotation subsystem. MultiPhATE2 was implemented in Python 3.7, and runs as a command-line code under Linux or MAC-OS.

An Optical Overview of Blazars with LAMOST. II. Gamma-Ray Blazar Candidates and Updated Classifications

Blazars represent the dominant class of associated γ-ray sources detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). However, in the more recent release of the Fourth Fermi-LAT Point Source Catalog (4FGL), ∼25% of the sources associated with lower-energy counterparts show a multifrequency behavior similar to that of blazars, but lacks an optical spectroscopic confirmation of their nature and are therefore classified as Blazar Candidates of Uncertain Type (BCUs). A particularly challenging task in blazar studies is to classify these BCUs and, when possible to estimate their redshifts, in particular for BL Lac objects, characterized by almost featureless optical spectra with only weak emission lines. Continuing our study of blazars with Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) optical spectral data, we perform an extensive search for optical spectra available in the LAMOST Data Release 6 archive. Our aim is confirming the blazar nature of BCUs and to test if new data can allow us to get a redshift estimate for BL Lac objects that lack measurement, as well as to search for and discover changing-look blazars. We selected sources out of the 4FGL catalog, the list of targets from our follow-up spectroscopic campaign of unidentified and/or unassociated γ-ray sources, and the Roma-BZCAT multifrequency catalog of blazars, finding a total of 42 sources with available LAMOST DR6 spectra. We confirmed the blazar-like nature of four blazar candidates . For the remaining 37 sources we confirm their previous classification.

Pursuing Dark Energy with Large Galaxy Redshift Surveys: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Beyond (Final Technical Report)

We have developed and applied methods of large-scale structure from galaxy redshift surveys to the study of dark energy. This program supported my group's development of the baryon acoustic method and our participation in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. In addition to my leadership role in the DESI collaboration, my group at Harvard focused on several topics addressing key needs of the DESI science program. 1) We continued our design, validation, and documentation of DESI target selection of the luminous red galaxy and emission-line galaxy samples. 2) We applied simulations from our novel and extremely fast N-body code to make DESI catalogs. With these, we will search for possible systematic shifts in the acoustic scale due to clustering bias with an unprecedented volume of simulations. 3) We extended our method for the fast construction of covariance matrices for correlation functions. 4) We developed new large-scale structure methods, including density-field reconstruction and three-point function analysis.

Spatially Resolved Velocity Structures in Jets of DF Tau and UY Aur A

Young stars accrete mass and angular momentum from their circumstellar disks. Some of them also drive outflows, which can be distinguished in optical forbidden emission lines. We analyze a sample of binary T Tauri stars observed with long-slit spectroscopy by the Hubble Space Telescope between 1998 and 2000, searching for spatially resolved outflows. We detect resolved [O i] emission in 2 cases out of 21. In DF Tau we resolve high- and medium-velocity outflows in a jet and counterjet out to 60 au. The outflows are accelerated within the inner 12 au and retain a constant speed thereafter. In UY Aur, we detect a blue- and a redshifted outflow from UY Aur A, as well as a blueshifted jet from UY Aur B. All of these features have been seen in [Fe ii] with data taken 10 years apart indicating that the underlying outflow pattern is stable on these timescales.

Use of Digital Real-Time Simulation and Optimization to Identify Maximum Real Power Injection on Banshee Distribution Network

This study investigates the hosting capacity of the Banshee Distribution Network by optimizing the real power injection at carefully selected Distributed Energy Resource (DER) locations. The analysis is conducted within the framework of power system operational constraints, including bus voltage ranges, thermal line ratings, and transformer loading limits. A Python-based Genetic Algorithm (GA), implemented using the PyGAD library, is employed to iteratively identify the optimal power injection configuration that maximizes network utilization while preserving system reliability. The methodology integrates a real-time simulation environment using the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS), allowing high-fidelity evaluation of power flow and voltage behavior under each proposed injection scenario. By coupling the optimization algorithm with real-time simulation feedback, this approach ensures that both static and dynamic constraints are enforced during the evaluation process. The GA leverages evolutionary operators such as selection, crossover, and mutation to navigate the nonlinear search space efficiently. The results of the study delineate the feasible hosting capacity at three targeted buses, reflecting maximum real power levels that can be injected without causing voltage violations, transformer overloading, or line congestion. These findings provide a decision- support tool for distribution planners and utilities aiming to integrate higher penetrations of DERs in existing infrastructure. Additionally, the work lays the foundation for extending such optimization techniques to multi-objective formulations, including economic dispatch and reactive power coordination, in future studies.

Measurement of charged-current quasi elastic-like and inclusive muon (anti-) neutrino interactions using NuMI beam the ICARUS detector

The ICARUS experiment, utilizing Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) technology, has been successfully taking physics data at Fermilab since June 2022. The experiment's primary objective is to function as the far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino program (SBN), searching for hints of physics beyond three-flavour PMNS neutrino oscillations. ICARUS also offers other diverse physics capabilities, including searches beyond the standard model and measurements of cross-sections. In addition to being exposed to the Booster Neutrino (BNB) beamline of the SBN experiment, ICARUS sits 795 m downstream and 5.75 degrees off-axis from the NuMI beam line. Due to the off-axis angle between NuMI and ICARUS, coupled with contributions from both pion and kaon decays to neutrino fluxes, interactions of NuMI neutrinos within ICARUS can be detected over a range of several GeV in energy. Measurements of these interactions present unique opportunities to infer neutrino interaction cross sections on an argon nuclear target within an energy range that overlaps both the SBN oscillation search and a significant portion of the DUNE spectrum. This poster will summarize the current status of muon-neutrino and muon-antineutrino charged current inclusive cross section measurements in ICARUS using the FHC and RHC NuMI sample respectively. Such inclusive measurements provide robust benchmarks for the overall interaction rate and muon kinematics, with reduced dependence on hadronic final-state modeling. The measurement of the muon-antineutrino Argon charged current inclusive cross section is particularly exciting and highly relevant for DUNE, given the scarcity of antineutrino-Argon cross section measurements in the literature. In addition, this poster will highlight ICARUS's first measurement of muon-neutrino Argon charged current mesonless final states using both transverse kinematic imbalance (TKI) variables and muon-proton kinematic variables. These measurements provide sensitivity to nuclear effects, final-state interactions, and nucleon correlations in argon, offering important constraints for improving neutrino interaction modeling for upcoming DUNE.

Datum: A Scientific Metadata Catalog

The data catalog market is currently flooded with a myriad of different products, but none serve the scientific community well. There are cloud-native tools like Databricks, Snowflake,to on-premise solutions like Collibra and Datahub. The common failing of all these tools however, is their inability to serve the scientific data community directly. Most catalogs are targeted towards financial, health, or user data - not sensor or scientific domain data. They also prioritize integrations that often don’t exist or are just starting to be used in the scientific realm - all while ignoring common scientific tools and file types. Datum is a catalog which targets the scientific data directly, including the tools and networks in which those tools are used. We work with the producers and consumers of the data where they are, targeting cloud and on-premise with a focus on classified networks. Datum is an Erlang/Elixir application. Technical Features Note: The features listed below are still under development and may change, slightly, upon final delivery of the product. File Formats - Datum has the ability to read additional metadata and provides processing pipelines for the following file formats: Plain Text, PDF, LaTeX, HTML, Open Document Format (.odt), XML, CSV/TSV (and other standard delimiters), OpenDocument Database and Spreadsheets, Geo-Referenced TIFF, Common Data Format, HDF/HDF5, LabView TDMS, Excel, DeltaTables, Parquet, Apache Iceberg, Apache Hudi and many others. Metadata Collection - Scanners for the local and networked file systems and cloud storage providers. Network integration with common databases such as MSSQL and MySQL. User Plugin System - Users are able to provide either file processing, metadata extraction, or sampling plugins in the programming language of their choice. Authentication/Authorization -: OIDC integration, SCIM provisioning and EntraID integration out of the box. Full user and group management system with a “least privilege” operating mode. Governance - Customizable data governance platform; dictate and enforce required metadata, enforce data embargos, and enforce user agreements and NDAs before data access. Ability to create health checks on data, rejecting abandoned or poorly curated data and automatically removing it from the search index. Ability for users to submit corrections. Search - Semantic search is a first class citizen. No licenses to expensive, external software required. Integrated use of vectors and vector-based search allows for AI agent integration at all levels of operation. Metadata Model - Display and control data’s lineage and connections to other data and data directories. Data is modeled after a filesystem - an organization instantly recognizable and navigable by most any user. CLI and SDK - Ships with a Command Line Interface (CLI) tool and with a fully-featured Python SDK. This allows for rapid and programmatic use of Datum by every level of user. Minimal Infrastructure - Datum ships as a single executable file and can be run on any operating system and most CPU architectures. Datum has no reliance on external databases, search indexing tools, or other outside services - and it runs equally well on edge computing devices, cloud services, or in a clustered HPC environment.

Repair and Resource Scheduling in Unbalanced Distribution Systems Using Neighborhood Search

—This paper proposes an optimization strategy to assist utility operators to recover power distribution systems after large outages. Specifically, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed for co-optimizing crews, resources, and network operations. The MILP model coordinates damage isolation, network reconfiguration, distributed generator re-dispatch, and crew/resource logistics. In addition, a framework for integrating different types of photovoltaic (PV) systems in the restoration process is developed. We consider two different types of crews, namely, line crews for damage repair and tree crews for obstacle removal. We also model the repair resource logistic constraints. Furthermore, a new algorithm is developed for solving the distribution system repair and restoration problem (DSRRP). The algorithm starts by solving DSRRP using an assignmentbased method, then a neighborhood search method is designed to iteratively improve the solution. The proposed method is validated on modified IEEE 123- and 8500-bus distribution test systems.

Discovery of the most luminous quasar of the last 9 Gyr

Abstract We report the discovery of a bright ( $g = 14.5$ mag (AB), $K = 11.9$ mag (Vega)) quasar at redshift $z=0.83$ — the optically brightest (unbeamed) quasar at $z>0.4$ . SMSS J114447.77-430859.3, at a Galactic latitude of $b=+18.1^{\circ}$ , was identified by its optical colours from the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS) during a search for symbiotic binary stars. Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy reveals broad Mg ii , H $\unicode{x03B2}$ , H $\unicode{x03B1}$ , and Pa $\unicode{x03B2}$ emission lines, from which we measure a black hole mass of $\log_{10}\! (M_{\mathrm{BH}}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}) = 9.4 \pm 0.5$ . With its high luminosity, $L_{\mathrm{bol}} = (4.7\pm1.0)\times10^{47}\,\mathrm{erg\,s}^{-1}$ or $M_{i}(z=2) = -29.74$ mag (AB), we estimate an Eddington ratio of $\approx1.4$ . As the most luminous quasar known over the last ${\sim}$ 9 Gyr of cosmic history, having a luminosity $8\times$ greater than 3C 273, the source offers a range of potential follow-up opportunities.

Machine learning materials properties with accurate predictions, uncertainty estimates, domain guidance, and persistent online accessibility

One compelling vision of the future of materials discovery and design involves the use of machine learning (ML) models to predict materials properties and then rapidly find materials tailored for specific applications. However, realizing this vision requires both providing detailed uncertainty quantification (model prediction errors and domain of applicability) and making models readily usable. At present, it is common practice in the community to assess ML model performance only in terms of prediction accuracy (e.g. mean absolute error), while neglecting detailed uncertainty quantification and robust model accessibility and usability. Here, we demonstrate a practical method for realizing both uncertainty and accessibility features with a large set of models. We develop random forest ML models for 33 materials properties spanning an array of data sources (computational and experimental) and property types (electrical, mechanical, thermodynamic, etc). All models have calibrated ensemble error bars to quantify prediction uncertainty and domain of applicability guidance enabled by kernel-density-estimate-based feature distance measures. All data and models are publicly hosted on the Garden-AI infrastructure, which provides an easy-to-use, persistent interface for model dissemination that permits models to be invoked with only a few lines of Python code. We demonstrate the power of this approach by using our models to conduct a fully ML-based materials discovery exercise to search for new stable, highly active perovskite oxide catalyst materials.

AutoEnRichness: A hybrid empirical and analytical approach for estimating the richness of galaxy clusters

ABSTRACT We introduce AutoEnRichness, a hybrid approach that combines empirical and analytical strategies to determine the richness of galaxy clusters (in the redshift range of 0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.35) using photometry data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16, where cluster richness can be used as a proxy for cluster mass. In order to reliably estimate cluster richness, it is vital that the background subtraction is as accurate as possible when distinguishing cluster and field galaxies to mitigate severe contamination. AutoEnRichness is comprised of a multistage machine learning algorithm that performs background subtraction of interloping field galaxies along the cluster line of sight and a conventional luminosity distribution fitting approach that estimates cluster richness based only on the number of galaxies within a magnitude range and search area. In this proof-of-concept study, we obtain a balanced accuracy of 83.20 per cent when distinguishing between cluster and field galaxies as well as a median absolute percentage error of 33.50 per cent between our estimated cluster richnesses and known cluster richnesses within r200. In the future, we aim for AutoEnRichness to be applied on upcoming large-scale optical surveys, such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time and Euclid, to estimate the richness of a large sample of galaxy groups and clusters from across the halo mass function. This would advance our overall understanding of galaxy evolution within overdense environments as well as enable cosmological parameters to be further constrained.

Fast and Invertible Simplicial Approximation of Magnetic‐Following Interpolation for Visualizing Fusion Plasma Simulation Data

We introduce a fast and invertible approximation for fusion plasma simulation data represented as 2D planar meshes with connectivities approximating magnetic field lines along the toroidal dimension in deformed 3D toroidal spaces. Scientific variables (e.g., density and temperature) in these fusion data are interpolated following a complex magnetic-field-line-following scheme in the toroidal space represented by a cylindrical coordinate system. This deformation in the 3D space poses challenges for root-finding and interpolation. To this end, we propose a novel paradigm for visualizing and analyzing such data based on a newly developed algorithm for constructing a 3D simplicial mesh within the deformed 3D space. Our algorithm generates a tetrahedral mesh that connects the 2D meshes using tetrahedra while adhering to the constraints on node connectivities imposed by the magnetic field-line scheme. Specifically, we first divide the space into smaller partitions to reduce complexity based on the input geometries and constraints on connectivities. Then, we independently search for a feasible tetrahedralization of each partition, considering nonconvexity. We demonstrate our method with two X-Point Gyrokinetic Code (XGC) simulation datasets on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), and use an ocean simulation dataset to substantiate broader applicability of our method. An open source implementation of our algorithm is available at https://github.com/rcrcarissa/DeformedSpaceTet.
