Environmental Durability Assessment and Development of Subcomponent Test Methods for Advanced Materials in Marine Energy Applications: Preprint

Marine energy developers are beginning to rely more heavily on advanced composite materials for their load bearing structures. Understanding how these materials respond and degrade in harsh marine environments is a complex problem. Much research has been performed at smaller laboratory scales to understand the fundamental physical and chemical degradation mechanisms, but little structural testing research has been performed at larger scales to understand how these physical and chemical interactions scale and how they should be accounted for in the design process. The Advanced Materials project is a multilaboratory research collaboration that has been addressing these issues with the intention of reducing risks and barriers to marine energy developers wanting to adopt advanced composite materials. The National Laboratory of the Rockies has been playing a leading role in developing larger scale testing infrastructure and test methods to validate complex numerical degradation models and standardize testing procedures to do so. This paper provides a review of past structural testing activities and how they have grown into current research activities and will continue to evolve into the future to directly address industry needs. This paper covers key research areas large-scale water absorption and subsequent structural validation testing, qualification of bolted and adhesive connections, and conducting combined submerged fatigue testing at increasing scales. This paper provides insights into the complex requirements for testing infrastructure and test method development to effectively qualify materials and certify marine energy structures for harsh marine environments. This research program paves the way for better guidance and standardization within the industry when adopting advanced composite materials.

Irradiate-anneal screening of total dose effects in semiconductor devices

An extensive investigation of irradiate-anneal (IRAN) screening against total dose radiation effects was carried out as part of a program to harden the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 (MJS'77) spacecraft to survive the Jupiter radiation belts. The method consists of irradiating semiconductor devices with Cobalt-60 to a suitable total dose under representative bias conditions and of separating the parts in the undesired tail of the distribution from the bulk of the parts by means of a predetermined acceptance limit. The acceptable devices are then restored close to their preirradiation condition by annealing them at an elevated temperature. IRAN was used when lot screen methods were impracticable due to lack of time, and when members of a lot showed a diversity of radiation response. The feasibility of the technique was determined by testing of a number of types of linear bipolar integrated circuits, analog switches, n-channel JFETS and bipolar transistors. Based on the results of these experiments a number of device types were selected for IRAN of flight parts in the MJS'77 spacecraft systems. The part types, screening doses, acceptance criteria, number of parts tested and rejected as well as the program steps are detailed.

Science Writer's Guide to Landsat 7

The Earth Observing System (EOS), the centerpiece of NASA's Earth science program, is a suite of spacecraft and interdisciplinary science investigations dedicated to advancing our understanding of global change. The flagship EOS satellite, Terra (formerly EOS AM-1), scheduled for launch in July 1999, will provide key measurements of the physical and radiative properties of clouds; air-land and air-sea exchanges of energy, carbon, and water; trace gases; and volcanoes. Flying in formation with Terra, Landsat 7 will make global high spatial resolution measurements of land surface and surrounding coastal regions. Other upcoming EOS missions and instruments include QuikSCAT, to collect sea surface wind data; the Stratospheric Gas and Aerosol Experiment (SAGE III), to create global profiles of key atmospheric gases; and the Active Cavity Radiometer Irradiance Monitors (ACRIM) to measure the energy output of the Sun. The second of the major, multi-instrument EOS platforms, PM-1, is scheduled for launch in 2000. Interdisciplinary research projects sponsored by EOS use specific Earth science data sets for a broader investigation into the function of Earth systems. Current EOS research spans a wide range of sciences, including atmospheric chemistry, hydrology, land use, and marine ecosystems. The EOS program has been managed since 1990 by the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., for NASA's Office of Earth Science in Washington, D. C. Additional information on the program can be found on the EOS Project Science Office Web site (http://eospso.gsfc.nasa.gov).

Study of the Mariner Mars 66 spacecraft

Mariner Mars 66 spacecraft mission study - probabilities of successfully transmitting encounter TV science data, releasing capsule for Mars landing, and command systems logic

MISSION PLANNING↗

Kohoutek - A great comet coming.

Passing inside the earth's orbit in late November, the comet Kohoutek will travel through the inner solar system during a unique period in the history of the space program, when Skylab and Mariner Venus-Mercury are in operation and the new C-141 Airborne Infrared Observatory is ready for flight. It is planned to investigate comprehensively the nature and evolution of the coma and tails of the comet. The detailed goals of the investigation include the identification of the parent molecules of the gases observed in comets, the determination of the processes that break down the parent molecules, the study of the physical nature of transient events in the comet, and the measurement of the solar-wind velocity in the inner solar system.

Mariner 6 and 7 picture analysis

Analysis of Mariner 6 and 7 far-encounter (FE) pictures is discussed. The purpose of the studies was to devise ways to combine digital data from the full set of FE pictures so as to improve surface resolution, distinguish clouds and haze patches from permanent surface topographic markings, deduce improved values for radius, oblateness, and spin-axis orientation, and produce a composite photographic map of Mars. Attempts to measure and correct camera distortions, locate each image in the frame, and convert image coordinates to martian surface coordinates were highly successful; residual uncertainties in location were considerably less than one pixel. However, analysis of the data to improve the radius, figure, and axial tilt and to produce a composite map was curtailed because of the superior data provided by Mariner 9. The data, programs, and intermediate results are still available (1976), and the project could be resumed with little difficulty.

Viscous rotary vane actuator/damper

A compact viscous rotary actuator/damper for use on the Mariner '71 and Viking Programs was developed. Several functions were combined into this single mechanism to control the deployment, latching, and damping of the solar panel arrays used on these space vehicles. The design, development, and testing of the actuator/damper are described, and major problems encountered are discussed.

Planetary ionospheres

An analogy is drawn between the Eath's ionosphere and the existence of ionospheres around other planets or natural satellites. An ionosphere is defined as a series of layers (D, E, E1, F2) and their characteristics are discussed. Emphasis is on the role of solar wind impacting with the potential ionosphere and the subsequent chemical and diffusion processes that can be observed. Data from the MARINER and PIONEER space programs are cited concerning measured electron density and ionospheric refractivity of extraterrestrial ionospheres, then an attempt is made to model these atmospheres based on Earth ionosphere theory.
