QCD Predictions for Meson Electromagnetic Form Factors at High Momenta: Testing Factorization in Exclusive Processes

We report the first lattice QCD computation of pion and kaon electromagnetic form factors, 𝐹 𝑀⁡ (𝑄 2 ), at large momentum transfer up to 10 and 28 GeV 2 , respectively. Utilizing physical masses and two fine lattices, we achieve good agreement with JLab experimental results at 𝑄 2 ≲ 4 GeV 2 . For 𝑄 2 ≳ 4 GeV 2 , our results provide ab initio QCD benchmarks for the forthcoming experiments at JLab 12 GeV and future electron-ion colliders. We also test the QCD collinear factorization framework utilizing our high-𝑄 2 form factors at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbation theory, which relates the form factors to the leading Fock-state meson distribution amplitudes. Comparisons with independent lattice QCD calculations using the same framework demonstrate, within estimated uncertainties, the universality of these nonperturbative quantities.

Thermal modifications of mesons and energy-energy correlators from real-time simulations of a 𝑈⁡(1) lattice gauge theory

We investigate thermal properties of a 𝑈⁡(1) lattice gauge theory in 1 + 1 dimensions through real-time simulations. We extract the spectral functions directly coupling to the pseudoscalar and scalar mesons, demonstrating the thermal modifications of these states with increasing temperatures. Introducing the notion of energy-flow operators, we quantify the temporal buildup of correlations in the energy flows across the lattice. We demonstrate that energy-energy correlators fail to factorize to products of energy flows, both in the vacuum and at nonzero temperature, indicating the presence of nontrivial correlations in the quantum states. Our results constitute a first real-time ab initio study of bound-state thermal broadening and finite temperature energy-flow correlations in a gauge theory, providing a benchmark for future studies of hadronic matter under extreme conditions.

$η(') → π0γγ$ decays: Test of meson exchange models and searches of leptophobic $B$ bosons

We analyze the vector and scalar meson exchange contributions to the doubly radiative decays $η(') → π0γγ$ and $η → ηγγ$, and study the sensitivity of these decays to a leptophobic B boson in the sub-GeV mass range. Our results are relevant for studies of these decays at existing (A2, BESIII, KLOE-2) and forthcoming $η/η'$-factories, such as the JEF and REDTOP experiments.

Measurement of muon antineutrino charged current - 0 meson scattering, using the NOvA Near Detector

Antineutrino interaction cross sections are, at present, poorly constrained, particularly regarding the role of multi-nucleon processes such as 2-particle 2-hole (2p2h) interactions. The associated crosssection systematic uncertainties represent a significant challenge for precision oscillation measurements, especially for the next generation of neutrino experiments such as DUNE. We present a new measurement of the muon antineutrino charged-current cross section without mesons in the final state, using the high-statistics data set of the NOvA Near Detector. The analysis employs a cut-based selection enhanced by machine learning techniques to isolate a high-purity sample dominated by quasielastic (QE) and 2p2h interactions. We present the cross section as a function of the kinetic energy and scattering angle of the outgoing muon. We also present measurements of more model-dependent kinematic variables such as the neutrino energy and momentum transfer, to better probe the underlying nuclear physics. The results are compared against various neutrino event generators to test the robustness of current interaction models.

B-meson semileptonic decays from highly improved staggered quarks

We present an update for results on B-meson semileptonic decays using the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for both valence and 2+1+1 sea quarks. The use of the highly improvedaction, combined with the MILC collaboration’s gauge ensembles with lattice spacings down to $\sim$0.03fm, allows the $b$ quark to be treated with the same discretization as the lighter quarks. The talk willfocus on updated results for $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}$, $B_{(s)} \to K$ scalar and vector form factors.

SEARCHING FOR MESONIC DARK MATTER WITH THE HEAVY PHOTON SEARCH EXPERIMENT

Several highly-sensitive astrophysical experiments over the past couple of decades have demonstrated that the current abundance of visible Standard Model matter cannot explain galactic rotation curves, the expansion history of the Universe, or the apparent warping of light in empty space. Instead, one finds strong agreement with this body of experimental results upon positing the existence of an invisible particulate field, dark matter. Namely, a cold, weakly interacting dark matter component can explain all these phenomena. A number of accelerator-based experiments have been developed to search for the weak couplings/interactions of these particles, many of them concentrating on particle models with masses of tens to thousands of GeV. A relatively new, well-motivated model is a dark sector coupled to the Standard Model via a dark photon. The current abundance of dark matter can be obtained if one assumes that dark matter is coupled to light by a MeV to GeV particle with a U(1) symmetry. The parameter space of these models remains largely unexplored because they are difficult to probe experimentally. In this thesis, I analyze data from the Heavy Photon Search (HPS) detector, whose two detector halves closely surround the electron beam, providing acceptance to far-forward boosted interactions. This forward acceptance to highly boosted particles yields unprecedented sensitivity to MeV-scale invariant masses. I exhaustively optimize the offline reconstruction of the HPS detector. Each reconstruction object, from Silicon Vertex Tracker hits to tracks, is studied to maximize acceptance of dark matter events. I then use the 2021 run data to search for one model of dark-photon-mediated matter, the Strongly Interacting Massive Particle (SIMP). SIMP models provide self-interacting dark matter candidates that can form bound states resembling dark mesons. HPS can detect SIMPs through the decay of a dark vector boson (either a dark ¿ or ¿) into e+e- pairs. I obtain exclusion contours for SIMPs using both an optimized cuts-based selection and a machine-learning-based selection, advancing our knowledge of the nature of dark matter.

Vector Meson Spectrum from Top-Down Holographic QCD

We elaborate on the brane configuration that gives rise to a QCD-like gauge theory that confines at low energies and becomes scale invariant at the highest energies. In the limit where the rank of the gauge group is large, a gravitational description emerges. For the confined phase, we obtain a vector meson spectrum and demonstrate how a certain choice of parameters can lead to quantitative agreement with empirical data.

Forward dijet and vector meson production at the LHC

We first describe the predictions concerning jet production in the very forward region, especially in the FOCAL kinematic region of the ALICE collaboration at CERN as a test of saturation. We also compare vector meson production cross sections at the LHC in Pb Pb and p Pb collisions with the Balitsky Fadin Kuraev Lipatov and the Balitsky Kovchegov evolution equations and data favor the observation of saturation at the LHC.

Monte Carlo calculations of high energy nucleon meson cascades and applications to galactic cosmic ray transport

Results obtained using a recently developed calculational method for determining the nucleon-meson cascade induced in thick materials by high-energy nucleons and charged pions are presented. The calculational method uses the intranuclear-cascade-evaporation model to treat nonelastic collisions by particles with energies approximately or smaller than GeV and an extrapolation model at higher energies. The following configurations are considered: (1) 19.2-GeV/c protons incident on iron; (2) 30.3-GeV/c protons incident on iron; (3) solar and galactic protons incident on the moon, and (4) galactic protons incident on tissue. For the first three configurations, experimental results are available and comparisons between the experimental and calculated results are given.

Nonelastic interactions of nucleons and pi mesons with complex nuclei at energies below 3 GeV.

Calculation of nonelastic interactions corresponding to continuum-state transitions using the intranuclear-cascade evaporation approach. Spallation yields, energy- and angle-dependent spectra, particle multiplicities, and nonelastic cross sections are calculated for incident nucleons and pi mesons with energies below 3 GeV on complex nuclei. Comparisons with experimental data are made, and, in general, the agreement is good. Discrepancies in these comparisons are discussed with respect to the deficiencies in the model.

Predictions of three-body-decays of mesons from pole-dominated dispersion relations

The investigation shows that the method of finite dispersion relations (FDR) as developed by Aviv and Nussinov (1970) is consistent with a wide range of three-body meson decays. The specific results vary with each reaction. For each possibility a definite form for the t-channel Regge-pole terms is selected. The results of the investigation indicate the basic reliability of an approach based on the FDR method and the finite-energy sum rules.
