Automatic photointerpretation for land use management in Minnesota

The author has identified the following significant results. Primary conclusions from the lake acreage study are: (1) The ERTS-1 band 7 density range of 0-5 reliably indicates open water down to 2 acre size. (2) The density range 6-9 identifies swamps. (3) The depth of the water could not be determined. (4) Cloud shadows can be misread as lakes unless the clouds are detected. (5) ERTS-1 data would provide the information for classifying lakes and for monitoring fluctuations in lake area.

Automatic photointerpretation for land use management in Minnesota

The author has identified the following significant results. Automatic photointerpretation techniques were utilized to evaluate the feasibility of data for land use management. It was shown that ERTS-1 MSS data can produce thematic maps of adequate resolution and accuracy to update land use maps. In particular, five typical land use areas were mapped with classification accuracies ranging from 77% to over 90%.

Remote sensing in Minnesota: Evaluation of programs and current needs

Aerial photographs of the entire state were used to develop information on geomorphic regions, land ownership, forest cover, soils, geology, land classification and land capability. LANDSAT imagery was included to update many photomaps for land use classification and urban development planning.

ERTS-B applications to Minnesota resource management

The author has identified the following significant results. The shape, pattern, and extent of surface water (e.g. lakes) can be readily mapped. Comparing detailed maps of several lakes in Itasca County with the areas classified as water by the LANDSAT data shows that some lakes have changed considerably since they were mapped. Due to several droughts this year (1976), the water level in most lakes has dropped. At this time, it seems feasible that LANDSAT digital tape data estimate lake water level change, due to the 1976 drought conditions.

Solar heating for an electronics manufacturing plant--Blue Earth, Minnesota

Partial space heating for 97,000 square foot plant is supplied by 360 flat plate solar collectors; energy is sorted as heat in indoor 20,000 gallon water tank. System includes all necessary control electronics for year round operation. During December 1978, solar energy supplied 24.4 percent of building's space heating load.
