Kinetics of the reaction OH + HNO3 yields H2O + NO3

The reaction OH + HN3 yields H2O + NO3 was studied over the temperature range 270-470 K in a flow system utilizing UV resonance fluorescence detection of OH. A temperature independent rate constant of (8.9 plus or minus 1.3) x 10 to the -14 cu cm/s was obtained, where the reported uncertainty represents a single standard deviation including estimates of systematic errors.

Temperature dependence of the reaction NO + NO3 - 2NO2

The flash photolysis-visible absorption technique has been used to measure rate constants for the reaction NO + NO3 2NO2 over the temperature range 224-328 K. The temperature dependence of the rate constant is given by the expression K1(T) = (1.59 + or - 0.32) x 10 to the -11th exp(122/T)cu cm/molecule/s where the stated uncertainties refer to the + or - sigma limits from both random and systematic errors.

Chloryl nitrate - A novel product of the OClO + NO3 + M recombination

The products of the reaction of OClO with NO3 were investigated between 220 and 298 K using a flow reactor and infrared, visible, and ultraviolet analysis. At temperatures below 250 K new infrared and ultraviolet absorption features were observed and assigned to the novel compound chloryl nitrate (O2ClONO2). Additionally, ClO and NO2 were observed as reaction products, indicating the existence of a second reaction channel. O2ClONO2 formation predominates at temperatures below 230 K. The reaction rate constant at 220 K is estimated to be on the order of 10 exp -14 cu cm/molecule s in 1-5 Torr of helium. These observations suggest that O2ClONO2 may exist in the terrestrial stratosphere.
