A class of optimum digital phase locked loops

This paper presents a class of optimum digital filters for digital phase locked loops, for the important case in which the maximum update rate of the loop filter and numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) is limited. This case is typical when the loop filter is implemented in a microprocessor. In these situations, pure delay is encountered in the loop transfer function and thus the stability and gain margin of the loop are of crucial interest. The optimum filters designed for such situations are evaluated in terms of their gain margin for stability, dynamic error, and steady-state error performance. For situations involving considerably high phase dynamics an adaptive and programmable implementation is also proposed to obtain an overall optimum strategy.

A tuning scheme for proportional-and-derivative controllers

A simple way of tuning usual proportional-and-derivative (PD) controllers is presented. The tuning is devised so that the closed-loop system has a speed of response near that of time-optimal bang-bang control during a large portion of the transient period. When the system is near the desired equilibrium it behaves linearly, and thus avoids the problem of being overly sensitive to the disturbances and noise. The idea is rather intuitive. Unlike dual-mode control, the plant is controlled throughout by a PD controller. Numerical results are included.

Calculation of convective heat transfer on highly blunt bodies at flow incidence

An implicit finite-difference code is used to study three-dimensional viscous heat-conducting flows over the forebody of hypersonic vehicles. In the method, adaptive grids are generated to the shock and body contour, and local flow gradients and total enthalpy are used to control numerical dissipation. Typical axisymmetric configurations of a sphere, ellipsoid, and flat-face disk are considered, along with the cases of a blunt 70-deg cone at 0 and 20 deg flow incidences and an asymmetric 60-deg cone raked off at a 73-deg angle.

The generation of surface targets with specified surface statistics

Results are presented from efforts to generate physical surfaces from known or desired surface statistical properties, proceeding from previous work on the generation of random surfaces for use in computer simulations. The known statistical surface is extended using a bicubic spline technique; these results are interfaced with a numerically controlled machine in order to generate the physical surface. A portion of a complete surface with Gaussian statistics was constructed and tested to measure conformity to the desired statistics.

Structural robustness with suboptimal responses for linear state space model

A relationship between the closed-loop eigenvalues and the amount of perturbations in the open-loop matrix is addressed in the context of performance robustness. If the allowable perturbation ranges of elements of the open-loop matrix A and the desired tolerance of the closed-loop eigenvalues are given such that max(j) of the absolute value of Delta-lambda(j) (A+BF) should be less than some prescribed value, what is a state feedback controller F which satisfies the closed-loop eigenvalue perturbation-tolerance requirement for a class of given perturbation in A? The paper gives an algorithm to design such a controller. Numerical examples are included for illustration.

Recent manufacturing advances for spiral bevel gears

The U.S. Army Aviation Systems Command (AVSCOM), through the Propulsion Directorate at NASA LRC, has recently sponsored projects to advance the manufacturing process for spiral bevel gears. This type of gear is a critical component in rotary-wing propulsion systems. Two successfully completed contracted projects are described. The first project addresses the automated inspection of spiral bevel gears through the use of coordinate measuring machines. The second project entails the computer-numerical-control (CNC) conversion of a spiral bevel gear grinding machine that is used for all aerospace spiral bevel gears. The results of these projects are described with regard to the savings effected in manufacturing time.

System identification from closed-loop data with known output feedback dynamics

This paper presents a procedure to identify the open loop systems when it is operating under closed loop conditions. First, closed loop excitation data are used to compute the system open loop and closed loop Markov parameters. The Markov parameters, which are the pulse response samples, are then used to compute a state space representation of the open loop system. Two closed loop configurations are considered in this paper. The closed loop system can have either a linear output feedback controller or a dynamic output feedback controller. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the proposed closed loop identification method.

Modified fast frequency acquisition via adaptive least squares algorithm

A method and the associated apparatus for estimating the amplitude, frequency, and phase of a signal of interest are presented. The method comprises the following steps: (1) inputting the signal of interest; (2) generating a reference signal with adjustable amplitude, frequency and phase at an output thereof; (3) mixing the signal of interest with the reference signal and a signal 90 deg out of phase with the reference signal to provide a pair of quadrature sample signals comprising respectively a difference between the signal of interest and the reference signal and a difference between the signal of interest and the signal 90 deg out of phase with the reference signal; (4) using the pair of quadrature sample signals to compute estimates of the amplitude, frequency, and phase of an error signal comprising the difference between the signal of interest and the reference signal employing a least squares estimation; (5) adjusting the amplitude, frequency, and phase of the reference signal from the numerically controlled oscillator in a manner which drives the error signal towards zero; and (6) outputting the estimates of the amplitude, frequency, and phase of the error signal in combination with the reference signal to produce a best estimate of the amplitude, frequency, and phase of the signal of interest. The preferred method includes the step of providing the error signal as a real time confidence measure as to the accuracy of the estimates wherein the closer the error signal is to zero, the higher the probability that the estimates are accurate. A matrix in the estimation algorithm provides an estimate of the variance of the estimation error.

Design of spherical varied line-space gratings for a high-resolution EUV spectrometer

A highly efficient EUV spectrograph is designed for high-resolution spectroscopic observation. The spectrograph is designed for point source astronomy in a 40-120 nm bandpass and is to be ORFEUS (Orbiting Retrievable Far and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer), scheduled for launch as the first payload of a German space platform Astro-SPAS (Astronomy Shuttle Pallet Satellite). The design uses spherical varied line-space (SVLS) grating to minimize astigmatism, coma, and spherical aberration. The effectiveness and practical feasibility of the design is proved by an SVLS grating for visible use. The image focusing properties of the SVLS grating for ORFEUS are compared to those with toroidal uniform line-space (TULS) design. The SVLS design is superior to the TULS, theoretically in resolution and image concentration, but also practically with not only fabrication ease. Four SVLS gratings with nominal groove densities of 6000, 4550, 3450, and 2616 gr./mm, and a 200 mm x 200 mm ruled area have been ruled using a numerically controlled ruling engine for use in ORFEUS.

Generation of gear tooth surfaces by application of CNC machines

This study will demonstrate the importance of application of computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines in generation of gear tooth surfaces with new topology. This topology decreases gear vibration and will extend the gear capacity and service life. A preliminary investigation by a tooth contact analysis (TCA) program has shown that gear tooth surfaces in line contact (for instance, involute helical gears with parallel axes, worm gear drives with cylindrical worms, etc.) are very sensitive to angular errors of misalignment that cause edge contact and an unfavorable shape of transmission errors and vibration. The new topology of gear tooth surfaces is based on the localization of bearing contact, and the synthesis of a predesigned parabolic function of transmission errors that is able to absorb a piecewise linear function of transmission errors caused by gear misalignment. The report will describe the following topics: description of kinematics of CNC machines with six degrees of freedom that can be applied for generation of gear tooth surfaces with new topology. A new method for grinding of gear tooth surfaces by a cone surface or surface of revolution based on application of CNC machines is described. This method provides an optimal approximation of the ground surface to the given one. This method is especially beneficial when undeveloped ruled surfaces are to be ground. Execution of motions of the CNC machine is also described. The solution to this problem can be applied as well for the transfer of machine tool settings from a conventional generator to the CNC machine. The developed theory required the derivation of a modified equation of meshing based on application of the concept of space curves, space curves represented on surfaces, geodesic curvature, surface torsion, etc. Condensed information on these topics of differential geometry is provided as well.
