Robust Control Design for Uncertain Nonlinear Dynamic Systems

Robustness to parametric uncertainty is fundamental to successful control system design and as such it has been at the core of many design methods developed over the decades. Despite its prominence, most of the work on robust control design has focused on linear models and uncertainties that are non-probabilistic in nature. Recently, researchers have acknowledged this disparity and have been developing theory to address a broader class of uncertainties. This paper presents an experimental application of robust control design for a hybrid class of probabilistic and non-probabilistic parametric uncertainties. The experimental apparatus is based upon the classic inverted pendulum on a cart. The physical uncertainty is realized by a known additional lumped mass at an unknown location on the pendulum. This unknown location has the effect of substantially altering the nominal frequency and controllability of the nonlinear system, and in the limit has the capability to make the system neutrally stable and uncontrollable. Another uncertainty to be considered is a direct current motor parameter. The control design objective is to design a controller that satisfies stability, tracking error, control power, and transient behavior requirements for the largest range of parametric uncertainties. This paper presents an overview of the theory behind the robust control design methodology and the experimental results.

Method for constructing periodic orbits in nonlinear dynamic systems

Method is modification of generalized Newton-Ralphson algorithm for analyzing two-point boundary problems. It constructs sequence of solutions that converge to precise dynamic solution in the sequence limit. Program calculates periodic orbits in either circular or elliptical restricted three-body problems.

Dynamic nonlinear analysis of shells of revolution (DYNASOR II)

Equations of motion of shell are solved using Houbolt's numerical procedure with nonlinear terms being moved to right-hand side of equilibrium equations and treated as generalized loads. Program was written in FORTRAN IV for IBM 360 or CDC 6000 series computers.

Dynamic Nonlinear Elastic Stability of Helicopter Rotor Blades in Hover and in Forward Flight

Equations for large coupled flap-lag motion of hingeless elastic helicopter blades are consistently derived. Only torsionally-rigid blades excited by quasi-steady aerodynamic loads are considered. The nonlinear equations of motion in the time and space variables are reduced to a system of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations with periodic coefficients, using Galerkin's method for the space variables. The nonlinearities present in the equations are those arising from the inclusion of moderately large deflections in the inertia and aerodynamic loading terms. The resulting system of nonlinear equations has been solved, using an asymptotic expansion procedure in multiple time scales. The stability boundaries, amplitudes of nonlinear response, and conditions for existence of limit cycles are obtained analytically. Thus, the different roles played by the forcing function, parametric excitation, and nonlinear coupling in affecting the solution can be easily identified, and the basic physical mechanism of coupled flap-lag response becomes clear. The effect of forward flight is obtained with the requirement of trimmed flight at fixed values of the thrust coefficient.

Topics in structural dynamics: Nonlinear unsteady transonic flows and Monte Carlo methods in acoustics

The results are reported of two unrelated studies. The first was an investigation of the formulation of the equations for non-uniform unsteady flows, by perturbation of an irrotational flow to obtain the linear Green's equation. The resulting integral equation was found to contain a kernel which could be expressed as the solution of the adjoint flow equation, a linear equation for small perturbations, but with non-constant coefficients determined by the steady flow conditions. It is believed that the non-uniform flow effects may prove important in transonic flutter, and that in such cases, the use of doublet type solutions of the wave equation would then prove to be erroneous. The second task covered an initial investigation into the use of the Monte Carlo method for solution of acoustical field problems. Computed results are given for a rectangular room problem, and for a problem involving a circular duct with a source located at the closed end.

Comparison of the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of Barber S-2 and ASF ride control freight trucks

The results of an experimental and analytical program to define the load deflection characteristics of a Barber S-2 freight truck and to compare these characteristics to those of an ASF freight truck of the same load capacity are presented. The comparison of the two trucks is made on a parameter basis and on the basis of the wheel/rail loads induced by track misalignment. The results indicate there is very little difference in the parameters and the response of the two trucks. This is of course qualified by the assumptions required in the development of the mathematical models.

Long-time predictions in nonlinear dynamics

It is known that nonintegrable dynamical systems do not allow precise predictions concerning their behavior for arbitrary long times. The available series solutions are not uniformly convergent according to Poincare's theorem and numerical integrations lose their meaningfulness after the elapse of arbitrary long times. Two approaches are the use of existing global integrals and statistical methods. This paper presents a generalized method along the first approach. As examples long-time predictions in the classical gravitational satellite and planetary problems are treated.

A simple propulsion system model for the simulation of nonlinear dynamic thrust response

A simple mathematical jet engine description is presented where the measured transition functions of the engine thrust can be simulated in a quasi-stationary operation as well as in acceleration or deceleration schedules. Because of its simplicity and high fidelity, it is especially suited for representing jet engines in digital simulation programs.

Linear and nonlinear dynamic analysis of redundant load path bearingless rotor systems

The bearingless rotorcraft offers reduced weight, less complexity and superior flying qualities. Almost all the current industrial structural dynamic programs of conventional rotors which consist of single load path rotor blades employ the transfer matrix method to determine natural vibration characteristics because this method is ideally suited for one dimensional chain like structures. This method is extended to multiple load path rotor blades without resorting to an equivalent single load path approximation. Unlike the conventional blades, it isk necessary to introduce the axial-degree-of-freedom into the solution process to account for the differential axial displacements in the different load paths. With the present extension, the current rotor dynamic programs can be modified with relative ease to account for the multiple load paths without resorting to the equivalent single load path modeling. The results obtained by the transfer matrix method are validated by comparing with the finite element solutions. A differential stiffness matrix due to blade rotation is derived to facilitate the finite element solutions.
