Data from Bioenergy Sorghum Maintains Photosynthetic Capacity in Elevated Ozone Concentrations

Elevated tropospheric ozone concentration (O3) significantly reduces photosynthesis and productivity in several C4 crops including maize, switchgrass and sugarcane. However, it is unknown how O3 affects plant growth, development and productivity in sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor L.), an emerging C4 bioenergy crop. Here, we investigated the effects of elevated O3 on photosynthesis, biomass and nutrient composition of a number of sorghum genotypes over two seasons in the field using free-air concentration enrichment (FACE), and in growth chambers. We also tested if elevated O3 altered the relationship between stomatal conductance and environmental conditions using two common stomatal conductance models. Sorghum genotypes showed significant variability in plant functional traits, including photosynthetic capacity, leaf N content and specific leaf area, but responded similarly to O3. At the FACE experiment, elevated O3 did not alter net CO2 assimilation (A), stomatal conductance (gs), stomatal sensitivity to the environment, chlorophyll fluorescence and plant biomass, but led to reductions in the maximum carboxylation capacity of phosphoenolpyruvate and increased stomatal limitation to A in both years. These findings suggest that bioenergy sorghum is tolerant to O3 and could be used to enhance biomass productivity in O3 polluted regions.

Evaluation and optimization for the decontamination/sterilization of personal protective equipment using a novel ozone chamber (CRADA Final Report)

Personal protective equipment slows the spread of the SARS-Cov-2 virus and protects first responders and the general population. However, there is a significant and well-publicized shortage of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers. Treatment with ozone may be a compelling, affordable, and scalable method to rapidly decontaminate personal protective equipment but more work is needed to verify these claims. Together with colleagues at the University of Nevada Reno and FATHHOME we helped design the experiments that evaluated the virucidal efficacy of FATHHOME’s device on N95 face masks and face shields. The results of our study were published in the journal Pathogens.

Observations of ozone, acyl peroxy nitrates, and their precursors during summer 2019 at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico

Carlsbad Caverns National Park (CAVE) is located in southeastern New Mexico and is adjacent to the Permian Basin, one of the most productive oil and natural gas (O&G) production regions in the United States. Since 2018, ozone (O 3 ) at CAVE has frequently exceeded the 70 ppbv 8-hour National Ambient Air Quality Standard. We examine the influence of regional emissions on O 3 formation using observations of O 3 , nitrogen oxides (NO x = NO + NO 2 ), a suite of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), and peroxypropionyl nitrate (PPN). Elevated O 3 and its precursors are observed when the wind is from the southeast, the direction of the Permian Basin. We identify 13 days during the July 25 to September 5, 2019 study period when the maximum daily 8-hour average (MDA8) O 3 exceeded 65 ppbv; MDA8 O 3 exceeded 70 ppbv on 5 of these days. The results of a positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis are used to identify and attribute source contributions of VOCs and NO x . On days when the winds are from the southeast, there are larger contributions from factors associated with primary O&G emissions; and, on high O 3 days, there is more contribution from factors associated with secondary photochemical processing of O&G emissions. The observed ratio of VOCs to NO x is consistently high throughout the study period, consistent with NO x -limited O 3 production. Finally, all high O 3 days coincide with elevated acyl peroxy nitrate abundances with PPN to PAN ratios > 0.15 ppbv ppbv -1 indicating that anthropogenic VOC precursors, and often alkanes specifically, dominate the photochemistry. Implications: The results above strongly indicate NO x -sensitive photochemistry at Carlsbad Caverns National Park indicating that reductions in NO x emissions should drive reductions in O 3 . However, the NO x -sensitivity is largely driven by emissions of NO x into a VOC-rich environment, and a high PPN:PAN ratio and its relationship to O 3 indicate substantial influence from alkanes in the regional photochemistry. Thus, simultaneous reductions in emissions of NO x and non-methane VOCs from the oil and gas sector should be considered for reducing O 3 at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Reductions in non-methane VOCs will have the added benefit of reducing formation of other secondary pollutants and air toxics.

EPCAPE Mt. Soledad In Situ Ozone Field Campaign Report

The focus of the Eastern Pacific Cloud Aerosol Precipitation Experiment (EPCAPE) is to characterize the extent, radiative properties, aerosol interactions, and precipitation characteristics of stratocumulus clouds in the Eastern Pacific Ocean across all four seasons at a coastal location, the Scripps Pier and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Mt. Soledad sites in La Jolla, California. An important enhancement in support of this study was the measurement of ozone at the Scripps Mt. Soledad site to help in distinguishing in situ sampling of air parcels originating from regional polluted and clean marine sources.

Test Flights of NOAA Ozone Photometer for Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS)/Balloon-Based Studies (OPUS) during TRACER (Field Campaign Report)

We proposed to integrate and fly the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ozone Photometer for Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS)/Balloon-Based Studies (OPUS) on the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s tethered balloon system (TBS) during the second phase (August 1-15) of the 2022 Tracking Aerosol Convection Interactions Experiment (TRACER) in southwest Houston, Texas. The two main goals were: 1) Test fly the sensor to discover and address any potential problems such as interface and communication with other instruments, interferences with other instruments and radio, and 2) If OPUS performs well, then inter-compare OPUS with the EN-SCI ozonesondes that will also be flown on the TBS. The collaborating institutions are DOE Sandia National Laboratories TBS team, the University of Houston, and St. Edward's University.

North China Plain as a hot spot of ozone pollution exacerbated by extreme high temperatures

Abstract. A large population in China has been exposed to both severe ozone (O3) pollution and extreme heat under global warming. Here, the spatiotemporal characteristics of coupled extremes in surface O3 and heat (OPCs) over China are investigated using surface observations, a process-based chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem), and multi-model simulations from Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). North China Plain (NCP; 37–41∘ N; 114–120∘ E) is identified as a hot spot of OPCs, where more than half of the O3 pollution days are accompanied by high temperature extremes. OPCs over NCP exceeded 40 d during 2014–2019, exhibiting an increasing trend. Both O3 concentrations and temperatures are elevated during OPCs compared with O3 pollution days occurring individually (OPIs). Therefore, OPCs impose more severe health impacts to humans than OPIs, but the stronger health effects are mainly driven by the higher temperatures. GEOS-Chem simulations further reveal that enhanced chemical production resulting from hot and stable atmospheric conditions under anomalous weather patterns primarily contributes to the exacerbated O3 levels during OPCs. In the future, CMIP6 projections suggest increased occurrences of OPCs over NCP in the middle of this century, but by the end of this century, OPCs may decrease or increase depending on the pollutant emission scenarios. However, for all future scenarios, extreme high temperatures will play an increasingly important role in modulating O3 pollution in a warming climate.

Fast climate responses to emission reductions in aerosol and ozone precursors in China during 2013-2017

China has been implementing a sequence of policies for clean air since the year 2013, and the aerosol pollution has been substantially improved, but ozone (O 3 )-related issues arose. Here, fast climate responses to emission reductions in aerosol and O 3 precursors over China during 2013–2017 are investigated using the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2). The overall decreases in aerosols produced an anomalous warming of 0.09 ± 0.10°C in eastern China (22–40° N, 110–122.5° E), which is further intensified by the increase in O 3 in the lower troposphere, resulting in an enhanced warming of 0.16 ± 0.15° C in eastern China. Reductions in industrial emissions contributed the most to the aerosol-induced warming, while emission reductions from residential sector induced a cooling effect due to a substantial decrease in light-absorbing black carbon aerosols. This implies that switching the residential sector to cleaner energy is more effective to achieve climate and health benefits in China.

Climate-driven deterioration of future ozone pollution in Asia predicted by machine learning with multi-source data

Ozone (O 3 ) is a secondary pollutant in the atmosphere formed by photochemical reactions that endangers human health and ecosystems. O 3 has aggravated in Asia in recent decades and will vary in the future. In this study, to quantify the impacts of future climate change on O 3 pollution, near-surface O 3 concentrations over Asia in 2020–2100 are projected using a machine learning (ML) method along with multi-source data. The ML model is trained with combined O 3 data from a global atmospheric chemical transport model and real-time observations. The ML model is then used to estimate future O 3 with meteorological fields from multi-model simulations under various climate scenarios. The near-surface O 3 concentrations are projected to increase by 5 %–20 % over South China, Southeast Asia, and South India and less than 10 % over North China and the Gangetic Plains under the high-forcing scenarios in the last decade of 21st century, compared to the first decade of 2020–2100. The O 3 increases are primarily owing to the favorable meteorological conditions for O 3 photochemical formation in most Asian regions. We also find that the summertime O 3 pollution over eastern China will expand from North China to South China and extend into the cold season in a warmer future. Our results demonstrate the important role of a climate change penalty on Asian O 3 in the future, which provides implications for environmental and climate strategies of adaptation and mitigation.

Summertime ozone pollution in China affected by stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation

In recent years, the near-surface ozone (O 3 ) level has been rising fast in China, with increasing damage to human health and ecosystems. In this study, the impact of stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) on interannual variations in summertime tropospheric O 3 over China is investigated based on GEOS-Chem model simulations and satellite retrievals. QBO has a significant positive correlation with near-surface O 3 concentrations over central China (92.5–112.5° E, 26–38° N) when the sea surface temperature (SST) over the eastern tropical Pacific is warmer than normal, with a correlation coefficient of 0.53, but QBO has no significant effect on O 3 under the cold SST anomaly. Compared to the easterly phase of QBO, the near-surface O 3 concentrations have an increase of up to 3 ppb (5% relative to the average) over central China during its westerly phase under the warm SST anomaly. O 3 also increases above the surface and up to the upper troposphere, with a maximum increase of 2–3 ppb (3%–5%) in 850–500 hPa over central China when comparing westerly phase to easterly phase. Process-based analysis and sensitivity simulations suggest that the O 3 increase over central China is mainly attributed to the anomalous downward transport of O 3 during the westerly phase of QBO when a warm SST anomaly occurs in the eastern tropical Pacific, while the local chemical reactions and horizontal transport processes partly offset the O 3 increase. This work suggests a potentially important role of QBO and the related vertical transport process in affecting near-surface O 3 air quality, with an indication for O 3 pollution prediction and prevention.

Source attribution of near-surface ozone trends in the United States during 1995–2019

Emissions of ozone (O 3 ) precursors in the United States have decreased in recent decades, and near-surface O 3 concentrations showed a significant decrease in summer but an increase in winter. In this study, an O 3 source tagging technique is utilized in a chemistry–climate model to investigate the source contributions to O 3 mixing ratios in the US from various emitting sectors and regions of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and reactive carbon species during 1995–2019. We show that domestic emission reductions from energy and surface transportation are primarily responsible for the decrease in summertime O 3 during 1995–2019. However, in winter, the emission control also weakens the NO x titration process, resulting in considerable increases in O 3 levels from natural sources. Additionally, increases in aviation and shipping emissions and transpacific transport of O 3 from Asia largely contribute to the winter O 3 increase. We also found that changes in large-scale circulation favoring O 3 transport from the upper atmosphere and foreign transport from Asia also explain 15 % of the increase in the US near-surface O 3 levels in winter.

Arctic tropospheric ozone: assessment of current knowledge and model performance

As the third most important greenhouse gas (GHG) after carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ), tropospheric ozone (O 3 ) is also an air pollutant causing damage to human health and ecosystems. This study brings together recent research on observations and modeling of tropospheric O 3 in the Arctic, a rapidly warming and sensitive environment. At different locations in the Arctic, the observed surface O 3 seasonal cycles are quite different. Coastal Arctic locations, for example, have a minimum in the springtime due to O 3 depletion events resulting from surface bromine chemistry. In contrast, other Arctic locations have a maximum in the spring. The 12 state-of-the-art models used in this study lack the surface halogen chemistry needed to simulate coastal Arctic surface O 3 depletion in the springtime; however, the multi-model median (MMM) has accurate seasonal cycles at non-coastal Arctic locations. There is a large amount of variability among models, which has been previously reported, and we show that there continues to be no convergence among models or improved accuracy in simulating tropospheric O 3 and its precursor species. The MMM underestimates Arctic surface O 3 by 5% to 15% depending on the location. The vertical distribution of tropospheric O 3 is studied from recent ozonesonde measurements and the models. The models are highly variable, simulating free-tropospheric O 3 within a range of ±50% depending on the model and the altitude. The MMM performs best, within ±8% for most locations and seasons. However, nearly all models overestimate O 3 near the tropopause (~300 hPa or ~8 km), likely due to ongoing issues with underestimating the altitude of the tropopause and excessive downward transport of stratospheric O 3 at high latitudes. For example, the MMM is biased high by about 20% at Eureka. Observed and simulated O 3 precursors (CO, NO x , and reservoir PAN) are evaluated throughout the troposphere. Models underestimate wintertime CO everywhere, likely due to a combination of underestimating CO emissions and possibly overestimating OH. Throughout the vertical profile (compared to aircraft measurements), the MMM underestimates both CO and NO x but overestimates PAN. Perhaps as a result of competing deficiencies, the MMM O 3 matches the observed O 3 reasonably well. Our findings suggest that despite model updates over the last decade, model results are as highly variable as ever and have not increased in accuracy for representing Arctic tropospheric O 3 .

Meteorological characteristics of extreme ozone pollution events in China and their future predictions

Ozone (O 3 ) has become one of the most concerning air pollutants in China in recent decades. In this study, based on surface observations, reanalysis data, global atmospheric chemistry model simulations, and multi-model future predictions, meteorological characteristics conducive to extreme O 3 pollution in various regions of China are investigated, and their historical changes and future trends are analyzed. During the most severe O 3 polluted months, the chemical production of O 3 is enhanced under the hot and dry conditions over the North China Plain (NCP) in June 2018 and the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in July 2017, while regional transport is the main reason for the severe O3 pollution over the Sichuan Basin (SCB) in July 2015 and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in September 2019. Over the last 4 decades, the frequencies of high-temperature and low-relative-humidity conditions increased in 2000–2019 relative to 1980–1999, indicating that O 3 pollution in both the NCP and YRD has become more frequent under historical climate change. In the SCB and PRD, the occurrence of atmospheric circulation patterns similar to those during the most polluted months increased, together with the more frequent hot and dry conditions, contributing to the increases in severe O 3 pollution in the SCB and PRD during 1980–2019. In the future (by 2100), the frequencies of months with anomalous high temperature show stronger increasing trends in the high-forcing scenario (Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP5-8.5)) compared to the sustainable scenario (SSP1-2.6) in China. It suggests that high anthropogenic forcing will not only lead to slow economic growth and climate warming but also likely result in environmental pollution issues.

Testing unified theories for ozone response in C 4 species

Abstract There is tremendous interspecific variability in O 3 sensitivity among C 3 species, but variation among C 4 species has been less clearly documented. It is also unclear whether stomatal conductance and leaf structure such as leaf mass per area (LMA) determine the variation in sensitivity to O 3 across species. In this study, we investigated leaf morphological, chemical, and photosynthetic responses of 22 genotypes of four C 4 bioenergy species (switchgrass, sorghum, maize, and miscanthus) to elevated O 3 in side‐by‐side field experiments using free‐air O 3 concentration enrichment (FACE). The C 4 species varied largely in leaf morphology, physiology, and nutrient composition. Elevated O 3 did not alter leaf morphology, nutrient content, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll fluorescence, and respiration in most genotypes but reduced net CO 2 assimilation in maize and photosynthetic capacity in sorghum and maize. Species with lower LMA and higher stomatal conductance tended to show greater losses in photosynthetic rate and capacity in elevated O 3 compared with species with higher LMA and lower stomatal conductance. Stomatal conductance was the strongest determinant of leaf photosynthetic rate and capacity. The response of both area‐ and mass‐based leaf photosynthetic rate and capacity to elevated O 3 were not affected by LMA directly but negatively influenced by LMA indirectly through stomatal conductance. These results demonstrate that there is significant variation in O 3 sensitivity among C 4 species with maize and sorghum showing greater sensitivity of photosynthesis to O 3 than switchgrass and miscanthus. Interspecific variation in O 3 sensitivity was determined by direct effects of stomatal conductance and indirect effects of LMA. This is the first study to provide a test of unifying theories explaining variation in O 3 sensitivity in C 4 bioenergy grasses. These findings advance understanding of O 3 tolerance in C 4 grasses and could aid in optimal placement of diverse C 4 bioenergy feedstock across a polluted landscape.

Midlatitude Ozone Depletion and Air Quality Impacts from Industrial Halogen Emissions in the Great Salt Lake Basin

We report aircraft observations of extreme levels of HCl and the dihalogens Cl 2 , Br 2 , and BrCl in an industrial plume near the Great Salt Lake, Utah. Complete depletion of O 3 was observed concurrently with halogen enhancements as a direct result of photochemically produced halogen radicals. Observed fluxes for Cl 2 , HCl, and NO x agreed with facility-reported emissions inventories. Bromine emissions are not required to be reported in the inventory, but are estimated as 173 Mg year –1 Br 2 and 949 Mg year –1 BrCl, representing a major uncounted oxidant source. A zero-dimensional photochemical box model reproduced the observed O 3 depletions and demonstrated that bromine radical cycling was principally responsible for the rapid O 3 depletion. Inclusion of observed halogen emissions in both the box model and a 3D chemical model showed significant increases in oxidants and particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) in the populated regions of the Great Salt Lake Basin, where winter PM 2.5 is among the most severe air quality issues in the U.S. The model shows regional PM 2.5 increases of 10%–25% attributable to this single industrial halogen source, demonstrating the impact of underreported industrial bromine emissions on oxidation sources and air quality within a major urban area of the western U.S.
