Shuttle orbiter Ku-band radar/communications system design evaluation. Ku band bent-pipe channel performance evaluation

Because of difficulties with the bit detector of the SPA mode 1 channel 3 input port, a new bit synchronizer was required. The two prime candidate designs are described and analyzed. The selected design is a modification of one which utilizes a phase frequency detector to track the received data clock frequency and a mid-bit transition point sample detector to generate a bit timing error (phase error) signal to control the relative phase between the local clock and the local data stream. The model used to calculate the effects of cable attenuation and rise time degradation is discussed.

Evaluation of large format electron bombarded virtual phase CCDs as ultraviolet imaging detectors

In conjunction with an external UV-sensitive cathode, an electron-bombarded CCD may be used as a high quantum efficiency/wide dynamic range photon-counting UV detector. Results are presented for the case of a 1024 x 1024, 18-micron square pixel virtual phase CCD used with an electromagnetically focused f/2 Schmidt camera, which yields excellent simgle-photoevent discrimination and counting efficiency. Attention is given to the vacuum-chamber arrangement used to conduct system tests and the CCD electronics and data-acquisition systems employed.

Continuously variable voltage-controlled phase shifter

Phase shifter circuit adjusts the phase relationship between a locally generated reference frequency and a received RF signal applied to a phase-coherent detector. It is small enough to be integrated into a receiver subassembly and operates on command from remote control panels.

Doppler shift system

A system is described for measuring velocities of radiating particles based on Doppler shift. Light from the particles is directed through a narrow band optical filter to a Fabry-Perot interferometer initially tuned to a selected center line corresponding to zero particle Doppler shift. The movable mirror of the interferometer is made to sweep about the center line by the output of a modulation oscillator. The fringe pattern output is imaged onto a pin hole through which light is directed to a photomultiplier. The output of the photomultiplier is supplied to a phase sensitive detector with the oscillator output as a reference signal and which operates in the quadrature mode. The detector's output is gain controlled and is combined with the oscillator's output to adjust the interferometer's movable mirror to acquire the line center.

Tracking system for moving subjects

Electronic system automatically focuses camera or spotlight on moving object. Subject is equipped with miniature ultrasonic or radio transmitter; its signal is picked up by two or more detectors, is phase detected and fed into computer which determines position of subject and sends command signals to servo for camera or spotlight.

The Infrared Astronomical Satellite /IRAS/ Scientific Data Analysis System /SDAS/ sky flux subsystem

The sky flux subsystem of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite Scientific Data Analysis System is described. Its major output capabilities are (1) the all-sky lune maps (8-arcminute pixel size), (2) galactic plane maps (2-arcminute pixel size) and (3) regional maps of small areas such as extended sources greater than 1-degree in extent. The major processing functions are to (1) merge the CRDD and pointing data, (2) phase the detector streams, (3) compress the detector streams in the in-scan and cross-scan directions, and (4) extract data. Functional diagrams of the various capabilities of the subsystem are given. Although this device is inherently nonimaging, various calibrated and geometrically controlled imaging products are created, suitable for quantitative and qualitative scientific interpretation.

The Galileo Solid-State Imaging experiment

The Galileo Orbiter's Solid-State Imaging (SSI) experiment uses a 1.5-m focal length TV camera with 800 x 800 pixel, virtual-phase CCD detector in order to obtain images of Jupiter and its satellites which possess a combination of sensitivity levels, spatial resolutions, geometric fidelity, and spectral range that are unmatched by earlier imaging data. After describing the performance of this equipment on the basis of ground calibrations, attention is given to the SSI experiment's Jupiter system observation objectives; these encompass atmospheric science, satellite surfaces, ring structure, and 'darkside' experiments.

Report presents comparative theoretical analysis of four conceptual techniques for initial estimation of carrier frequency of suppressed-carrier, binary-phase-shift-keyed radio signal. Each technique effected by open-loop analog/digital signal-processing subsystem part of Costas-loop phase-error detector functioning in closed-loop manner overall.

Signal acquisition system

A frequency-tracking feedback circuit for acquiring a communication carrier signal from a relatively noisy environment. The circuit includes a digital phase-frequency detector, a limiter, a mixer, and a voltage-controlled oscillator, connected in a long control loop in such a manner that an input band of signals is translated in frequency until the desired carrier is centered within a relatively narrow acquisition window. The characteristics of the loop are such that acquisition may be achieved even when the total power of the noise in the input signal band exceeds the carrier power, provided that the noise is relatively uniformly distributed over the input band. A technique is also disclosed for compensating from any unbalance in the noise spectrum, so that relatively low carrier-to-noise ratios can be tolerated. Also disclosed are improvements for dynamically varying the parameters of the frequency-tracking loop in such a manner as to reduce acquisition time, and a technique for detecting acquisition and handing control to post-acquisition control circuitry.

Multi-point measurements of ULF wave phases using a multi-channel energetic ion detector

The oscillation of differential fluxes of energetic ions modulated by a ULF wave often shows a phase shift between measurements in back-to-back detectors with look directions perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field. In a plasma of a single ion species, the phase difference is caused by displacement of the effective measurement positions by one ion gyroradius to each side of the detector. As the wave phase is periodic, the observed phase shift can correspond to a family of possible wavelengths. Simultaneous measurements of the flux modulations in different energy channels, which are equivalent to measurements of the wave phase at different positions, may make it possible to single out a unique wavelength consistent with all the measurements. Using the medium-energy-particle experiments ISEE-1 and 2, each of which may serve as a back-to-back detector, the above method was applied to a compressional Pc 5 wave observed near the equatorial plane at L between about 7 and 11. The transverse propagation properties of the wave were determined unambiguously.

Phase Retrieval with Signal Bias

The effect of a uniform measurement bias, due to background light, stray light, detector dark current, or detector offset, on phase retrieval wavefront sensing algorithms is analyzed. Simulation results indicate that the root-mean-square error of the retrieved phase can be more sensitive to an unaccounted-for signal bias than to random noise in practical scenarios. Three methods for reducing the impact of signal bias are presented
