Bench-scale studies with Chlorella pyrenoidosa 71105 were conducted in four- and eight-liter culture vessels, with and without recycling. It was established that the algal strain could be maintained for periods up to 72 days with supplemented re-cycled medium. In a factorial series of experiments, the highest yields were obtained with a 2.0% concentration of carbon dioxide, a 0.07 dilution factor (nutrient dilution rate/culture volume), and an 8.5 ft(exp -1) ratio of light surface to liquid culture volume. Optimum pH and concentrations of the constituents of the growth medium were determined in corollary test-tube studies. Other test-tube studies showed that the nutrient medium used for mass culture could be stored up to five weeks at 25 C or at refrigerator temperature (4 C) with little change in nitrogen-urea level. Algal suspensions stored at 4 C remained viable for periods of at least 12 weeks; growth resumed after a lag period when stored suspensions were cultured at 39 C. Streptomycin was found suitable for controlling a blue-green containment.
An algal screening and mutation study was undertaken to obtain algae superior to Chlorella 71105 for use in a photosynthetic gas exchanger. Of the forty-four thermophilic algae studied, eighteen appeared to have growth rates as great as Chlorella 71105. Optimization of the physical and chemical environments of these strains is recommended as a way to further improve growth rates and concomitant oxygen production. The mutation study revealed that Chlorella 71105 is relatively resistant to germicidal ultraviolet radiation. No high temperature mutants of Chlorella 71105 were found.

An orbit-averaged Fokker-Planck equation has been derived to study the secular evolution of stellar systems with regular orbits and the heating of stellar disks. It is shown that a population of stars with an initially Maxwellian peculiar-velocity distribution will remain Maxwellian as it diffuses through orbit space only if: (1) a second-order diffusion tensor is proportional to epicycle energy; and (2) the population's velocity dispersion grows as the square root of time. Scattering by ephemeral spiral waves is able to account for the observed kinematics of the solar neighborhood only if the waves have wavelengths in excess of 9 kpc and constantly drifting pattern speeds.
The study deals with the approximation of the effect of all velocity-increment moments on the spatial evolution of the pdf for maximally correlated structures by the effect of the second moment alone by assuming independence of separated length scales. The dependence of the two-point velocity statistics on length-scale or separation is found to be governed by the gradients of the stress, rather than of the velocity. This may provide a new approach for predicting the domain patterns observed in turbulent flows and a new means of characterizing or classifying different structures, namely, by their nonlinear diffusion coefficient.
Based on its ionic composition, the magnetosphere of Uranus appears to contain little plasma of solar wind origin. If the plasma source is the atmosphere of the planet, both adiabatic convection with uniform losses and radial diffusion would imply negative radial gradients of the distribution function at fixed first and second adiabatic invariants. The analysis of LECP data in the outer magnetosphere reveals different gradients. Evidence is presented that ions may have been non-adiabaticaly heated during the fourth plasma sheet immersion although this is not unambiguously distinguishable from a source at large down tail distance.
This simple example is used to show how the formalism of Moyal works when it is applied to systems of identical particles. The symmetric and antisymmetric Moyal propagators are evaluated for this case; from them, the correct energy levels of energy are obtained, as well as the Wigner functions for the symmetric and antisymmetric states of the two identical particle system. Finally, the solution of the Bloch equation is straightforwardly obtained from the expressions of the Moyal propagators.
We calculate the velocity distribution of halo particles using realistic models for the density profiles of the Galactic disk, spheroid, and halo components. We get the resulting velocity distribution, which is different from the Maxwellian distribution of isothermal halo. We investigate the consequences concerning the time averaged count rate and the amplitude of the annual modulation in WIMPS detection experiments. Compared to the previous estimate based on the Maxwellian distribution, the time averaged count rate is up to 40 percent larger. On the other hand, the amplitude of the annual modulation is up to a factor of two larger.
From the minimal action principle follows the Hamilton equations of evolution for geometric optical rays in anisotropic media. As in classical mechanics of velocity-dependent potentials, the velocity and the canonical momentum are not parallel, but differ by an anisotropy vector potential, similar to that of linear electromagnetism. Descartes' well known diagram for refraction is generalized and a factorization theorem holds for interfaces between two anisotropic media.
In this paper we describe design centers and show how it has produced remarkable decreases in time and expense of creating preliminary designs.
