Topology by Dissipation: Majorana Bosons in Metastable Quadratic Markovian Dynamics

Majorana bosons, that is, tight bosonic analogs of the Majorana fermionic quasiparticles of condensed-matter physics, are forbidden for gapped free bosonic matter within a standard Hamiltonian scenario. We show how the interplay between dynamical metastability and nontrivial bulk topology makes their emergence possible in noninteracting bosonic chains undergoing Markovian dissipation. This leads to a distinctive form of topological metastability, whereby a conserved Majorana boson localized on one edge is paired, in general, with a symmetry generator localized on the opposite edge. We argue that Majorana bosons are robust against disorder and identifiable by signatures in the zero-frequency steady-state power spectrum. Our results suggest that symmetry-protected topological phases for free bosons may arise in transient metastable regimes, which persist over practical timescales.

Evidence of Quadrupole and Octupole Deformations in Zr 96 + Zr 96 and Ru 96 + Ru 96 Collisions at Ultrarelativistic Energies

In the hydrodynamic model description of heavy-ion collisions, the elliptic flow v 2 and triangular flow v 3 are sensitive to the quadrupole deformation β 2 and octupole deformation β 3 of the colliding nuclei. The relations between v n and β n have recently been clarified and were found to follow a simple parametric form. The STAR Collaboration has just published precision v n data from isobaric Ru 96 + Ru 96 and Zr 96 + Zr 96 collisions, where they observe large differences in central collisions v 2 , Ru > v 2 , Zr and v 3 , Ru < v 3 , Zr . Using a transport model simulation, we show that these orderings are a natural consequence of $\beta_{2,Ru} \gg \beta_{2,Zr}$ and $\beta_{3,Ru} \ll \beta_{3,Zr}$ We reproduce the centrality dependence of the v 2 ratio qualitatively and v 3 ratio quantitatively and extract values of β 2 and β 3 that are consistent with those measured at low-energy nuclear structure experiments. STAR data provide the first direct evidence of strong octupole correlations in the ground state of Zr 96 in heavy-ion collisions. Our analysis demonstrates that flow measurements in high-energy, heavy-ion collisions, especially using isobaric systems, are a new precision tool to study nuclear structure physics.

Analysis of Neutral B -Meson Decays into Two Muons

Branching fraction and effective lifetime measurements of the rare decay B s 0 → μ + μ - and searches for the decays B 0 → μ + μ - and B s 0 → μ + μ - γ are reported using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a luminosity of 9 fb - 1 . The branching fraction B ( B s 0 → μ + μ - ) = ( 3.0 9 - 0.43 - 0.11 + 0.46 + 0.15 ) × 10 - 9 and the effective lifetime τ ( B s 0 → μ + μ - ) = 2.07 ± 0.29 ± 0.03 ps are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for B 0 → μ + μ - and B s 0 → μ + μ - γ decays is found and upper limits B ( B 0 → μ + μ - ) < 2.6 × 10 - 10 and B ( B s 0 → μ + μ - γ ) < 2.0 × 10 - 9 at the 95% C.L. are determined, where the latter is limited to the range m μ μ > 4.9 GeV / c 2 . The results are in agreement with the standard model expectations.

Confinement and Collective Escape of Active Particles

Active matter broadly covers the dynamics of self-propelled particles. While the onset of collective behavior in homogenous active systems is relatively well understood, the effect of inhomogeneities such as obstacles and traps lacks overall clarity. Here, we study how interacting, self-propelled particles become trapped and released from a trap. We have found that captured particles aggregate into an orbiting condensate with a crystalline structure. As more particles are added, the trapped condensates escape as a whole. Our results shed light on the effects of confinement and quenched disorder in active matter.

Classical Simulation of Boson Sampling Based on Graph Structure

Boson sampling is a fundamentally and practically important task that can be used to demonstrate quantum supremacy using noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. In this Letter, we present classical sampling algorithms for single-photon and Gaussian input states that take advantage of a graph structure of a linear-optical circuit. The algorithms’ complexity grows as so-called treewidth, which is closely related to the connectivity of a given linear-optical circuit. Using the algorithms, we study approximated simulations for local Haar-random linear-optical circuits. For equally spaced initial sources, we show that, when the circuit depth is less than the quadratic in the lattice spacing, the efficient simulation is possible with an exponentially small error. Notably, right after this depth, photons start to interfere each other and the algorithms’ complexity becomes subexponential in the number of sources, implying that there is a sharp transition of its complexity. Finally, when a circuit is sufficiently deep enough for photons to typically propagate to all modes, the complexity becomes exponential as generic sampling algorithms. We numerically implement a likelihood test with a recent Gaussian boson sampling experiment and show that the treewidth-based algorithm with a limited treewidth renders a larger likelihood than the experimental data.
