Finite-Temperature Structures of Supported Subnanometer Catalysts Inferred via Statistical Learning and Genetic Algorithm-Based Optimization

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) minimize noble metal utilization and can alter the activity and selectivity of supported metal nanoparticles. However, the morphology of active centers, including single atoms and subnanometer clusters of a few atoms, remains elusive due to experimental challenges. The computational cost to describe numerous cluster shapes and sizes makes direct first-principles calculations impractical. We present a computational framework to enable structure determination for single-atom and subnanometer cluster catalysts. As a case study, we obtained the low energy structures of Pd n (n = 1-21) clusters supported on CeO 2 (111), which are critical components of automobile three-way catalysts. Trained on density functional theory data, a three-dimensional cluster expansion is established using statistical learning to describe the Hamiltonian and predict energies of supported Pdn clusters of any structure. Low energy stable and metastable structures are identified using a Metropolis Monte Carlo-based genetic algorithm in the canonical ensemble at 300 K. We observe that supported single atoms sinter to form bilayer clusters and large cluster isomers share similarities in both shape and energy, and elucidate the significance of the support and microstructure on cluster stability. We discovered a simple surrogate structure-energy model, where the energy per atom scales with the square root of the average first coordination number, which can be used to estimate energies and compare the stability of clusters. Our framework, applicable to any metal/support system, fills an important methodological gap to predict the stability of supported metal catalysts in the subnanometer regime.

Observation of nanoparticle coalescence during core-shell metallic nanowire growth in colloids via nanoscale imaging

The surface morphology and shape of crystalline nanowires significantly influence their functional properties, including phonon transport, electrocatalytic performance, to name but a few. However, the kinetic pathways driving these morphological changes remain underexplored due to challenges in real-space and real-time imaging at single-particle and atomic resolutions. This study investigates the dynamics of shell (Au, Pd, Pt, Fe, Cu, Ni) deposition on AuAg alloy seed nanowires during core-shell formation. By using chiral/non-chiral seed nanowires, advanced imaging techniques, including liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy (LPTEM), cryogenic TEM, and three-dimensional electron tomography, a three-step deposition process is revealed: heterogeneous nucleation, nanoparticle attachment, and coalescence. It is found that colloidal Ostwald ripening, metal reactivity, and deposition amount modulate nanoparticle size and surface roughness, shaping final morphologies. Noble metal nanoparticles (Au, Ag, Pd, Pt) coalesce with seed nanowire along the 〈111〉 direction, distinct from that of other metals. These findings are consistent across different metals, including Ru, Cu, Fe, and Ni, highlighting the hypothesis of these processes in nanowire formation. These findings enhance traditional crystallographic theories and provide a framework for designing nanowire morphology. Additionally, our imaging techniques may be applied to investigate phenomena like electrodeposition, dendrite growth in batteries, and membrane deformation.

Enhancing the activity of Pd ensembles on graphene by manipulating coordination environment

Atomic dispersion of metal catalysts on a substrate accounts for the increased atomic efficiency of single-atom catalysts (SACs) in various catalytic schemes compared to the nanoparticle counterparts. However, lacking neighboring metal sites has been shown to deteriorate the catalytic performance of SACs in a few industrially important reactions, such as dehalogenation, CO oxidation, and hydrogenation. Metal ensemble catalysts (M n ), an extended concept to SACs, have emerged as a promising alternative to overcome such limitation. Inspired by the fact that the performance of fully isolated SACs can be enhanced by tailoring their coordination environment (CE), we here evaluate whether the CE of M n can also be manipulated in order to enhance their catalytic activity. We synthesized a set of Pd ensembles (Pd n ) on doped graphene supports (Pd n /X-graphene where X = O, S, B, and N). We found that introducing S and N onto oxidized graphene modifies the first shell of Pd n converting Pd–O to Pd–S and Pd–N, respectively. Also, we further found that the B dopant significantly affected the electronic structure of Pd n by serving as an electron donor in the second shell. We examined the performance of Pd n /X-graphene toward selective reductive catalysis, such as bromate reduction, brominated organic hydrogenation, and aqueous-phase CO 2 reduction. We observed that Pd n /N-graphene exhibited superior performance by lowering the activation energy of the rate-limiting step, i.e., H 2 dissociation into atomic hydrogen. The results collectively suggest controlling the CE of SACs in an ensemble configuration is a viable strategy to optimize and enhance their catalytic performance.

Single-Atom Alloy Formation via Reaction-Driven Catalyst Restructuring

We demonstrate that single-atom alloy catalysts can be made by exposing physical mixtures of monometallic supported Cu and Pd catalysts to vinyl acetate (VA) synthesis reaction conditions. This reaction induces the formation of mobile clusters of metal diacetate species that drive extensive metal nanoparticle restructuring, leading to atomic dispersion of the precious metal, smaller nanoparticle sizes than the parent catalysts, and high activity and selectivity for both VA synthesis and ethanol dehydrogenation reactions. As a result, this approach is scalable and appears to be generalizable to other alloy catalysts.
