Crater Morphology in the Phoenix Landing Ellipse: Insights Into Net Erosion and Ice Table Depth

Icebreaker [1] is a Discovery class mission being developed for future flight opportunities. Under this mission concept, the Icebreaker payload is carried on a stationary lander, and lands in the same landing ellipse as Phoenix. Samples are acquired from the subsurface using a drilling system that penetrates into materials which may include loose or cemented soil, icy soil, pure ice, rocks, or mixtures of these. To avoid the complexity of mating additional strings, the drill is single-string, limiting it to a total length of 1 m.

Mars Phoenix EDL Trajectory and Atmosphere Reconstruction Using NewSTEP

This document describes the trajectory and atmosphere reconstruction of the Mars Phoenix Entry, Descent, and Landing using the New Statistical Trajectory Estimation Program. The approach utilizes a Kalman filter to blend inertial measurement unit data with initial conditions and radar altimetry to obtain the inertial trajectory of the entry vehicle. The nominal aerodynamic database is then used in combination with the sensed accelerations to obtain estimates of the atmosphere-relative state. The reconstructed atmosphere pro le is then blended with pre-flight models to construct an estimate of the as-flown atmosphere.

Flight path control strategies and preliminary deltaV requirements for the 2007 Mars Phoenix (PHX) mission

This paper describes the methods used to estimate the statistical deltaV requirements for the propulsive maneuvers that will deliver the spacecraft to its target landing site while satisfying planetary protection requirements. the paper presents flight path control analysis results for three different trajectories, open, middle, and close of launch period for the mission.

The Thermal Design Evolution of the Phoenix Robotic Arm

An adequate warm-up heater approach was developed using analysis & previous Mars surface experience. In the worst-cold environment, all the actuators were able to warm to their minimum operating temperature within the required time. In the worst-hot environment, the maximum continuous actuator power dissipation during normal operations was determined. A mechanical thermostat provides best means to cope with a failed-on wrist heater & to ease RA operations planning.

Onboard/Origin-Destination Survey - Phoenix - 2007

In 2007, the Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority, with consultant support, conducted an origin and destination survey of Valley Metro riders. The self-administered surveys were conducted among riders of fixed-route bus service: Local, Circulator, Limited, Rural, Express, and RAPID bus. Data collection was performed from October 8 through December 18, 2007. The objectives of the survey were to examine the demographics and travel behavior characteristics of Valley Metro riders. The survey data used for this analysis were appropriately weighted and expanded to represent the unlinked trips made by Valley Metro riders.

Understanding Multifamily Energy Use in the Phoenix Area: Building Stock Segmentation for Retrofit Planning

This report is an addendum to a publication series that focuses on approximately 100 different local geographies, or "clusters". This addendum expands the report series to include large multifamily building characteristics as well as energy and emission data for each local geography. The intention of this addendum is to help policymakers at the city, county, and state levels better understand building energy use and emissions in large multifamily buildings.

Symposium on High Power, Ambient Temperature Lithium Batteries, 180th Meeting of the Electrochemical Society, Phoenix, AZ, Oct. 13-17, 1991, Proceedings

Papers presented in these proceedings are on the state of the art in high-power lithium batteries, a design analysis of high-power Li-TiS2 battery, the performance and safety features of spiral wound lithium/thionyl chloride cells, the feasibility of a superhigh energy density battery of the Li/BrF3 electrochemical system, and an enhanced redox process of disulfide compounds and their application in high energy storage. Attention is also given to the structure and charge-discharge characteristics of mesophase-pitch based carbons, a study of carbons and graphites as anodes for lithium rechargeable cells, Li metal-free rechargeable Li(1+x)Mn2O4/carbon cells, and rechargeable lithium batteries using V6O13/V5O5 as the positive electrode material. Other papers discuss the electrochemical stability of organic electrolytes in contact with solid inorganic cathode materials, the electrochemical behavior of methyl formate solutions, and the interface between a solid polymer electrolyte and lithium anode.

Phoenix Missile Hypersonic Testbed (PMHT): Project Concept Overview

An over view of research into a low cost hypersonic research flight test capability to increase the amount of hypersonic flight data to help bridge the large developmental gap between ground testing/analysis and major flight demonstrator Xplanes is provided. The major objectives included: develop an air launched missile booster research testbed; accurately deliver research payloads through programmable guidance to hypersonic test conditions; low cost; a high flight rate minimum of two flights per year and utilize surplus air launched missiles and NASA aircraft.

Icy Soil Acquisition Device for the 2007 Phoenix Mars Lander

The Icy Soil Acquisition Device is a first of its kind mechanism that is designed to acquire ice-bearing soil from the surface of the Martian polar region and transfer the samples to analytical instruments, playing a critical role in the potential discovery of existing water on Mars. The device incorporates a number of novel features that further the state of the art in spacecraft design for harsh environments, sample acquisition and handling, and high-speed low torque mechanism design.
