Display screen and method of manufacture therefor

A screen assembly that combines an angle re-distributing prescreen with a conventional diffusion screen is disclosed. The prescreen minimizes or eliminates the sensitivity of the screen assembly to projector location. The diffusion screen provides other desirable screen characteristics. The prescreen is preferably formed by a collection of light transmitting and refracting elements, preferably spheres 80, partially embedded in a light blocking layer. Toward the back of the spheres 80 are effective apertures 82 where the light blocking layer 81 is absent or at least thinner than in other regions toward the side of the spheres. The projected image enters spheres 80 through the effective apertures 82, and exits the spheres 80 centered orientationally about the normal to the lens axis. The re-oriented light rays then enter the diffusion screen for viewing.

Designing for Virtual Windows in a Deep Space Habitat

This paper discusses configurations and test analogs toward the design of a virtual window capability in a Deep Space Habitat. Long-duration space missions will require crews to remain in the confines of a spacecraft for extended periods of time, with possible harmful effects if a crewmember cannot cope with the small habitable volume. Virtual windows expand perceived volume using a minimal amount of image projection equipment and computing resources, and allow a limited immersion in remote environments. Uses for the virtual window include: live or augmented reality views of the external environment; flight deck, piloting, observation, or other participation in remote missions through live transmission of cameras mounted to remote vehicles; pre-recorded background views of nature areas, seasonal occurrences, or cultural events; and pre-recorded events such as birthdays, anniversaries, and other meaningful events prepared by ground support and families of the crewmembers.

Modeling and Simulation of Trapping Mechanisms of Granular Media in Space

This paper describes the modeling and simulation of trapped granular media, within the context of the Granular Imager project. We describe the physics of trapped granular media in space, and the methodologies used to stably confine and shape such a medium using electromagnetic fields. The numerical models have also been validated with results in the literature, obtaining excellent agreement. The results of the numerical tests indicate that it is possible, with structural arrangements of rings and plates at different levels of electrostatic potential, to stably confine one or more charged particles, when driven by voltages that can be modulated in time and space.

Meta-optics-based systems and methods for ocular applications

Meta-lens based ocular imaging, near-eye display, and eye-tracking systems are described. The systems can include a single focusing optic and an integrated circuit that provides illumination light and includes an imaging array. The focusing optic includes meta-atoms formed on a substrate. The systems may have no moving parts and achieve imaging or image-projection fields-of-view approaching or exceeding 180 degrees. Because of their low part count, the systems can be robust and have a very small form factor.

System and technique for retrieving depth information about a surface by projecting a composite image of modulated light patterns

A technique, associated system and program code, for retrieving depth information about at least one surface of an object. Core features include: projecting a composite image comprising a plurality of modulated structured light patterns, at the object; capturing an image reflected from the surface; and recovering pattern information from the reflected image, for each of the modulated structured light patterns. Pattern information is preferably recovered for each modulated structured light pattern used to create the composite, by performing a demodulation of the reflected image. Reconstruction of the surface can be accomplished by using depth information from the recovered patterns to produce a depth map/mapping thereof. Each signal waveform used for the modulation of a respective structured light pattern, is distinct from each of the other signal waveforms used for the modulation of other structured light patterns of a composite image; these signal waveforms may be selected from suitable types in any combination of distinct signal waveforms, provided the waveforms used are uncorrelated with respect to each other. The depth map/mapping to be utilized in a host of applications, for example: displaying a 3-D view of the object; virtual reality user-interaction interface with a computerized device; face--or other animal feature or inanimate object--recognition and comparison techniques for security or identification purposes; and 3-D video teleconferencing/telecollaboration.

Tiny Devices Project Sharp, Colorful Images

Displaytech Inc., based in Longmont, Colorado and recently acquired by Micron Technology Inc. of Boise, Idaho, first received a Small Business Innovation Research contract in 1993 from Johnson Space Center to develop tiny, electronic, color displays, called microdisplays. Displaytech has since sold over 20 million microdisplays and was ranked one of the fastest growing technology companies by Deloitte and Touche in 2005. Customers currently incorporate the microdisplays in tiny pico-projectors, which weigh only a few ounces and attach to media players, cell phones, and other devices. The projectors can convert a digital image from the typical postage stamp size into a bright, clear, four-foot projection. The company believes sales of this type of pico-projector may exceed $1.1 billion within 5 years.

The HST Quasar Absorption-Line Key Project. 8: CCD imaging of Hubble Space Telescope quasar fields

We present an analysis of CCD images of more than 100 quasars; many of the objects have been or will be observed in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Key Project Quasar Absorption-Line Survey. The data set consists of B, g, and i photometry of 117 quasars and deeper g (limiting magnitude of approximately equal 22) images of 101 quasar fields. Positions accurate to approximately equal 1 sec, measured with the Space Telescope Science Institute's Astrometric Support Program, are listed for all of the quasars in this study. Positions, magnitudes, and classifications of stars and galaxies located within approximately equal 100 sec of the quasars are given for all of the deep g data. The positions of the stars and galaxies relative to the quasar are accurate to approximately equal 0.5 sec. The results presented here can be used to prepare spectroscopic programs designed to obtain redshifts of galaxies in the fields of these quasars.

Chasing ghosts: characterization of artifact generation in coded aperture decoding due to experimental implementation

Coded aperture imaging is a form of lensless aperture imaging that projects multiple overlapping images of the source onto the detector, enhancing signal strength, which is advantageous for low-flux sources or high-resolution imaging. This technique requires decoding of the detector signal to reconstruct the original source, which involves convolving the detector data with the aperture pattern. When the signal is from a centered point source, the reconstructed source image is known as the point spread function (PSF). A clean PSF without artifacts is a Dirac delta function [Appl. Opt. 20, 1858 (1981)]. This paper examines the robustness of the decoding process against variations in experimental tolerances by analyzing artifact growth in the reconstructed PSF. We illustrate the effects of incorrect magnification, rotation, and detector size and find that aperture–detector rotational misalignment about the imaging axis is the most sensitive parameter, with significant artifact generation occurring with angular offsets of less than one degree. We discuss compensation methods for imperfect aperture placement, finding that small detector sizes produce uncompensatable artifact generation, and compare theoretical predictions with experimental PSF measurements of a rank , 6.8 mm thick (less than one mean free path) coded aperture with a 3.5 mm cell size, conducted at the MegaJOuLe Neutron Imaging Radiography dense plasma focus [IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. 49, 3299 (2021)] using a 2.45 MeV neutron source. Based on our findings, we recommend using magnified coded apertures in the under-sampled regime, which allows for the inclusion of fiducial markers to characterize aperture–detector rotational offsets and the addition of mechanical coupling, where possible, to constrain rotational and magnification offsets.

Semi-automatic image annotation using 3D LiDAR projections and depth camera data

Efficient image annotation is necessary to utilize deep learning object recognition neural networks in nuclear safeguards, such as for the detection and localization of target objects like nuclear material containers (NMCs). This capability can help automate the inventory accounting of different types of NMCs within nuclear storage facilities. The conventional manual annotation process is labor-intensive and time-consuming, hindering the rapid deployment of deep learning models for NMC identifications. This paper introduces a novel semi-automatic method for annotating 2D images of nuclear material containers (NMCs) by combining 3D light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data with color and depth camera images collected from a handheld scan system. The annotation pipeline involves an operator manually marking new target objects on a LiDAR-generated map, and projecting these 3D locations to images, thereby automatically creating annotations from the projections. The semi-automatic approach significantly reduces manual efforts and the expertise in image annotation that is required to perform the task, allowing deep learning models to be trained on-site within a few hours. The paper compares the performance of models trained on datasets annotated through various methods, including semi-automatic, manual, and commercial annotation services. The evaluation demonstrates that the semi-automatic annotation method achieves comparable or superior results, with a mean average precision (mAP) above 0.9, showcasing its efficiency in training object recognition models. Additionally, the paper explores the application of the proposed method to instance segmentation, achieving promising results in detecting multiple types of NMCs in various formations.

Two-Dimensional Projected-Momentum Covariance Mapping for Coulomb Explosion Imaging

We introduce projected-momentum covariance mapping, an extension of recoil-frame covariance mapping for 2D ion imaging studies. By considering the two-dimensional projection of the ion momenta as recorded by the detector, one opens the door to a complex suite of analysis tools adapted from three-dimensional momentum imaging studies. This includes the use of different frames of reference to unravel the dynamics of fragmentation and the application of fragment momentum constraints to isolate specific fragmentation channels. The technique is demonstrated on data from a two-dimensional ion imaging study of the Coulomb explosion of the cis and trans isomers of 1,2-dichloroethene, following strong-field ionization by an intense near-infrared femtosecond laser pulse. Classical simulations are used to guide the interpretation of projected-momentum covariance maps. The results offer a detailed insight into the distinct Coulomb explosion dynamics for this pair of isomers and lay the groundwork for future time-resolved studies of photoisomerization dynamics in this molecular system.
