Hadronic vacuum polarization for the muon 𝑔 − 2 from lattice QCD: Complete short and intermediate windows

We present complete results for the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment 𝑎 𝜇 in the short- and intermediate-distance window regions, which account for roughly 10% and 35% of the total HVP contribution to 𝑎 𝜇 , respectively. In particular, we perform lattice-QCD calculations for the isospin-symmetric connected and disconnected contributions, as well as corrections due to strong-isospin breaking. For the short-distance window observables, we investigate the so-called log-enhancement effects as well as the significant oscillations associated with staggered quarks in this region. For the dominant, isospin-symmetric light-quark-connected contribution, we obtain 𝑎$^{𝑙⁢𝑙,SD}_{𝜇⁡}$(conn) = 48.139⁢(11) stat ⁢(91) syst ⁢[92] total × 10 −10 and 𝑎$^{𝑙⁢𝑙,W}_{𝜇}$⁡(conn) = 206.90⁢(14) stat ⁢(61) syst ⁢[63] total × 10 −10 . We use Bayesian model averaging to fully estimate the covariance matrix between the individual contributions. Our determinations of the complete window contributions are 𝑎$^{SD}_{𝜇}$ = 69.05⁢(1) stat⁢ (21) syst ⁢[21] total × 10 −10 and 𝑎$^{W}_{𝜇}$ = 236.45⁢(17) stat⁢ (83) syst ⁢[85] total × 10 −10 . This work is part of our ongoing effort to compute all contributions to HVP with an overall uncertainty at the few-permille level.

Moments of axial-vector GPD from lattice QCD: quark helicity, orbital angular momentum, and spin-orbit correlation

In this work, we present a lattice QCD calculation of the Mellin moments of the twist-2 axial-vector generalized parton distribution (GPD), $\overset{\sim }{H}\left(x,\xi, t\right)$ , at zero skewness, ξ, with multiple values of the momentum transfer, t. Our analysis employs the short-distance factorization framework on ratio-scheme renormalized quasi-GPD matrix elements. The calculations are based on an N f = 2 + 1 + 1 twisted mass fermions ensemble with clover improvement, a lattice spacing of a = 0.093 fm, and a pion mass of m π = 260 MeV. We consider both the iso-vector and iso-scalar cases, utilizing next-to-leading-order perturbative matching while omitting the disconnected contributions and gluon mixing in the iso-scalar case. For the first time, we determine the Mellin moments of $\overset{\sim }{H}$ up to the fifth order. From these moments, we discuss the quark helicity and orbital angular momentum contributions to the nucleon spin, as well as the spin-orbit correlations of the quarks. Additionally, we perform a Fourier transform over the momentum transfer, which allows us to explore the spin structure in the impact-parameter space.

Incorporating DD π effects and left-hand cuts in lattice QCD studies of the T cc (3875) +

We generalize the relativistic field-theoretic three-particle finite-volume scattering formalism to describe generic DDπ systems in the charm C = 2 sector. This includes the isospin-0 channel, in which the recently discovered doubly-charmed tetraquark T cc (3875) + is expected to manifest as a pole in the DDπ → DDπ scattering amplitude. The formalism presented here can also be applied to lattice QCD settings in which the D * is bound and, in particular, remains valid below the left-hand cut in DD * scattering, thus resolving an issue in previous analyses of lattice-determined finite-volume energies.

Three-particle formalism for multiple channels: the ηππ + $ K\overline{K}\pi $ system in isosymmetric QCD

We generalize previous three-particle finite-volume formalisms to allow for multiple three-particle channels. For definiteness, we focus on the two-channel ηππ and $ K\overline{K}\pi $ system in isosymmetric QCD, considering the positive G parity sector of the latter channel, and neglecting the coupling to modes with four or more particles. The formalism we obtain is thus appropriate to study the b 1 (1235) and η(1295) resonances. The derivation is made in the generic relativistic field theory approach using the time-ordered perturbation theory method. We study how the resulting quantization condition reduces to that for a single three-particle channel when one drops below the upper ($ K\overline{K}\pi $) threshold. We also present parametrizations of the three-particle K matrices that enter into the formalism.

Lattice QCD calculation of the pion distribution amplitude with domain wall fermions at physical pion mass

We present a direct lattice QCD calculation of the x-dependence of the pion distribution amplitude (DA), which is performed using the quasi-DA in large momentum effective theory on a domain-wall fermion ensemble at physical quark masses and spacing a ≈ 0.084 fm. The bare quais-DA matrix elements are renormalized in the hybrid scheme and matched to $\overline{MS}$ with a subtraction of the leading renormalon in the Wilson-line mass. For the first time, we include threshold resummation in the perturbative matching onto the light-cone DA, which resums the large logarithms in the soft gluon limit at next-to-next-to-leading log. The resummed results show controlled scale-variation uncertainty within the range of momentum fraction x ϵ [0.25, 0.75] at the largest pion momentum P z ≈ 1.85 GeV. In addition, we apply the same analysis to quasi-DAs from a highly-improved-staggered-quark ensemble at physical pion mass and a = 0.076 fm. By comparison we find with 2σ confidence level that the DA obtained from chiral fermions is flatter and lower near x = 0.5.

Temperature dependence of heavy quark diffusion from (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD

We present a lattice determination of the heavy-quark diffusion coefficient in (2+1)-flavor QCD with almost physical quark masses. The momentum and spatial diffusion coefficients are extracted for a wide temperature range, from T = 163 MeV to 10 GeV. The results are in agreement with previous works from the HotQCD collaboration, and show fast thermalization of the heavy quark inside the QGP. Near the chiral crossover temperature T c ≃ 150 MeV, our results are close to the AdS/CFT estimation computed at strong coupling.

Exploratory calculation of 𝐾 L → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − decay from lattice QCD at physical pion mass

We compute the complex, long-distance two-photon-exchange amplitude which contributes to the rare 𝐾 L → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − decay from lattice QCD. We use a 24 3 × 64 physical-pion-mass gauge field ensemble at an inverse lattice spacing of 1.023 GeV and a QED ∞ -based formalism. Our implementation strategies for all five non-SU(3)-flavor-suppressed diagram topologies are given in detail. We achieve a 25% statistical precision on the dispersive part of this long-distance amplitude. This calculation is carried out with 2+1 quark flavors and therefore requires the addition of counterterms to compensate for the absence of the Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani mechanism. These counterterms are not included in the current calculation and will be the subject of a second paper. Although a direct comparison to experiment cannot yet be made because of those omitted counterterms, the present exploratory calculation allows one to identify principal sources of statistical uncertainty in this calculation. The precision of our results is limited by the reconstruction of the physical contribution of the 𝜂 intermediate state, for which various strategies are tested and compared.

$Ξ$ 𝑐 → $Ξ$ form factors from lattice QCD with domain-wall quarks: A new piece in the puzzle of $Ξ^0_𝑐$ decay rates

We present a lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) determination of the vector and axial-vector form factors that describe the charm-baryon semileptonic decays Ξ 𝑐 → Ξ⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ . The calculation uses a domain-wall action for the up, down, and strange quarks, and an anisotropic clover action for the charm quark. We use four ensembles of gauge-field configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations, with lattice spacings between 0.111 and 0.073 fm and pion masses ranging from 420 to 230 MeV. We present Standard Model predictions for the decay rates and branching fractions of Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ$^−_𝑐$⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ and Ξ$^+_𝑐$ → Ξ$^0_𝑐$⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ for ℓ =𝑒, 𝜇. In particular, we obtain Γ⁡(Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝜈 𝑒 )/|𝑉 𝑐⁢𝑠 | 2 = 0.2515⁢(73) ps −1 and ℬ⁡(Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ − ⁢𝑒 +⁢ 𝜈 𝑒 ) = 3.58⁢(12)%. These values are higher than those predicted by a previous lattice calculation and substantially higher than the experimentally measured values, but consistent with expectations from approximate 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(3) flavor symmetry.

Nuclear cold QCD: Review and future strategy

This review examines data from hadron-nucleus collisions, primarily focusing on hard processes like Drell-Yan, heavy flavor, and quarkonium production. It highlights observed modifications of particle yields as functions of momentum and rapidity, aiming to clarify the underlying QCD effects on cold nuclear matter. It outlines strategies for future experiments, including the Electron-Ion Collider, to distinguish between these effects. Key questions address the universality of suppression mechanisms and the role of nonperturbative physics, providing a road map for upcoming measurements of hadrons on nuclei.

$Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$ form factors from lattice QCD and standard-model predictions for $Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$⁢𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − and $Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$⁢𝛾 decays

We present the first lattice QCD determination of the $Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$ vector, axial-vector, and tensor form factors, which are relevant for the theory of rare decays including $Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$⁢ℓ + ⁢ℓ − and $Ξ$ 𝑏 → $Ξ$⁢𝛾. The calculation is performed with 2+1 flavors of domain-wall fermions at three different lattice spacings and pion masses in the range from approximately 430 to 230 MeV. The bottom quark is implemented using an anisotropic clover action. Three-point functions with a wide range of source-sink separations and model averaging are used to extract the ground-state contributions. We fit the dependence of the form factors on the momentum transfer, the pion mass, and the lattice spacing using modified 𝑧 expansions that account for subthreshold branch cuts, and apply dispersive bounds and asymptotic behavior constraints to achieve controlled uncertainties in the full semileptonic kinematic region. Using our form factor results, we present standard model predictions for the $Ξ$$^{−}_{𝑏}$ → $Ξ$ − ⁢𝛾 and $Ξ$$^{−}_{𝑏}$ → $Ξ$ − ⁢𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − branching fractions and two angular observables.

Collins-Soper kernel and reduced soft function in lattice QCD

We evaluate the Collins-Soper kernel and the reduced soft function in lattice QCD, incorporating 𝒪⁡(𝛼 𝑠 ) matching corrections. The calculation relies on the evaluation of the quasitransverse momentum–dependent wave function with asymmetric staple-shaped quark bilinear operators and four-point meson form factors. These quantities are computed nonperturbatively using two 𝑁 𝑓 =2 + 1 + 1 twisted-mass fermion ensembles with the same lattice spacing of 𝑎 = 0.093 fm: the first ensemble has a lattice size of 24 3 × 48 and a pion mass of 346 MeV, and the second one has a lattice size of 32 3 × 64 and a pion mass of 261 MeV. The Collins-Soper kernel and the soft function are needed for the determination of the transverse momentum–dependent parton distribution functions.

QCD Predictions for Physical Multimeson Scattering Amplitudes

We use lattice QCD calculations of the finite-volume spectra of systems of two and three mesons to determine, for the first time, three-particle scattering amplitudes with physical quark masses. Our results are for combinations of 𝜋 + and 𝐾 + , at a lattice spacing 𝑎 = 0.063 fm, and in the isospin-symmetric limit. We also obtain accurate results for maximal-isospin two-meson amplitudes, with those for 𝜋 + ⁢𝐾 + and 2⁢𝐾 + being the first determinations at the physical point. Dense lattice spectra are obtained using the stochastic Laplacian-Heaviside method, and the analysis leading to scattering amplitudes is done using the relativistic finite-volume formalism. Results are compared to chiral perturbation theory and to phenomenological fits to experimental data, finding good agreement.

Kaon gluon parton distribution and momentum fraction from 2+1+1 lattice QCD with high statistics

We present a high-statistics lattice-QCD determination of the kaon gluon parton distribution function and gluon momentum fraction. We use clover valence fermion action to take 1,296,640 kaon-correlator measurements on a highly improved staggered quark ensemble with 𝑎 ≈ 0.12 fm and 310-MeV pion mass generated by the MILC Collaboration. A detailed investigation into the impact of gauge-link smearing on the gluonic matrix elements indicates that five steps of hypercubic smearing offer an effective balance between signal quality and preservation of long-distance physics. We report a nonperturbatively renormalized kaon gluon momentum fraction of Math output error at 𝜇 = 2 GeV in the Math output error scheme. Using reduced pseudo-Ioffe-time-distribution matrix elements and pseudo-parton-distribution-function (PDF) matching, we extract the kaon gluon PDF and compare with the prediction from the Dyson-Schwinger equation and with the pion PDF obtained from the same ensemble.

Tomography of pions and kaons in the QCD vacuum: Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions

We evaluate the pion and kaon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions in the instanton liquid model, a model of the QCD vacuum at low resolution. The relevant transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) are factored into a constituent quark distribution times a rapidity dependent soft factor from staple-shaped Wilson lines, for fixed parton longitudinal momentum and transverse separation. The results are evolved to higher rapidities using the Collins-Soper kernel and higher resolution using renormalization group evolution. The comparison to existing extractions of pion TMDs from Drell-Yan data is briefly discussed.

Composite quarks and leptons with embedded QCD

We construct a model of quark and lepton compositeness based on an 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) gauge interaction that confines chiral preons, which are also charged under the weakly coupled 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐿 ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝑅 gauge group. The breaking of the latter, down to the Standard Model group, is achieved by scalar 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) bound states at a scale in the 30–100 TeV range. The embedding of the QCD gauge group in 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS slows down the running of 𝛼 𝑠 in the UV. We estimate the effects of the strongly coupled 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) dynamics on the running of the 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐿 ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝑅 gauge couplings, which likely remain perturbative beyond the compositeness scale of about 10 3 –10 4 TeV, and even above a unification scale. A composite vectorlike lepton doublet acquires a mass in the TeV range probed at future colliders, and an extended Higgs sector arises from six-preon bound states.

Small-𝑥 behavior in QCD from maximal entanglement and conformal invariance

Recent evidence suggests that, at small Bjorken 𝑥, QCD evolution drives the proton into a state of maximal entanglement. If the evolution kernel is assumed to be conformally invariant—as is the case for the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov equation—we can describe it by a conformal field theory. Moreover, the central charge 𝑐 of the corresponding conformal field theory emerges as the key parameter governing the 𝑥 dependence of both the entanglement entropy and the structure function. Here we apply the exact Bethe ansatz methods to the quantum spin chain dual to Lipatov’s high energy effective action to extract the central charge of the theory, and find that 𝑐 = 1. This implies the ∼𝑥 −1/3 small 𝑥 behavior for the structure function—the prediction that can be tested at the forthcoming Electron-Ion Collider.

𝜂 and 𝜂′ meson production in 𝐽/𝜓 radiative decays from lattice QCD

We report on the computation of amplitudes describing the radiative decay processes 𝐽/𝜓 →𝛾⁢𝜂 and 𝐽/𝜓 →𝛾⁢𝜂′ from first principles via lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Using lattices with two heavier than physical degenerate flavors of light quark where 𝑚 𝜋 ∼391 MeV, and a strange quark tuned to approximately the physical value, we compute three-point correlation functions using optimized meson operators with a range of momenta. The use of optimized operators allows access to the 𝜂′, even though it appears as an excited state, lying above the ground-state 𝜂 in the isoscalar pseudoscalar channel. Statistically precise signals are obtained in this disconnected process by averaging over large numbers of kinematically equivalent correlators. We determine transition form factors as a function of photon virtuality across the timelike region, which describe also the Dalitz processes 𝐽/𝜓 →𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − ⁢𝜂 (′) . Significantly lower magnitudes of transition form factor for both the 𝜂 and 𝜂′ are found than those extracted from experimental data, and possible explanations for this observation are presented.

Third moments of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions from physical-point lattice QCD

Using forward matrix elements of local leading-twist operators, we present a determination of the isovector third Mellin moments ⟨𝑥 2 ⟩ of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions. Two lattice QCD ensembles at the physical pion mass are used, which were generated using a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action and 2+1 flavor tree-level improved Wilson Clover fermions coupling via 2-level HEX-smearing. Leveraging a wide set of operators, two extraction methods for the matrix elements, and the automatic inclusion of model uncertainties via bootstrapped model averages, we extract values of the third Mellin moments. Furthermore, this is the first direct calculation of these observables performed at the physical pion mass.
