Prolate spheroidal slosh model for fluid motion

Mathematical model, designed for zero gravity conditions, analyzes dynamic effects of large amplitude fluid motion interior to a rigid body. It has two advantages over other mathematical models: (1) constrains slosh motion to given region in natural manner, and (2) allows equilibrium position of slosh mass to be anywhere on slosh surface.

Post-flight differential correction analysis using Vinti's spheroidal method for the small astronomy satellite orbit

The results of an intensive analysis of a differential orbit improvement method utilizing observational data for a 550-kilometer altitude, near-circular, near-equatorial satellite orbit are presented. Observations of the Small Astronomy Satellite (SAS-1) are in the form of direction cosines as measured at two ground interferometer tracking stations near the Equator during the first 22 orbital revolutions (approximately 37 hours) after launch of the spacecraft. Numerical results, in both tabular and graphical form, are displayed for numerous iterated fittings of various observational arcs by differential correction of the orbital elements. Parameters varied in these comparative cases include the time duration of the observational data block, the number of pairs of direction cosine data and the number of tracking station passes included in the solution, the distribution of such passes between the two available tracking stations, and the acceptance criterion for the observational residuals in the least squares fitting procedure. It was found that three observational pairs of direction cosine data, the minimum number possible for a uniquely determined solution in theory, are sufficient to promote covergence to an accurate solution, if properly selected.

Viscous-fluid reaction to a torsionally oscillating spheroid Linearized steady-state weak-separation solution

For both the linearized prolate and oblate problems, perturbation series for all orders of eccentricity are obtained. The 'weak separation' method of solving partial-differential-equation boundary-value problems assumes that each linearly independent solution is a sum of products of single-variable functions. The method is applied to a hierarchy of partial differential equations. The weak-separation solutions are constructed by generalizing only the Bessel functions of the homogeneous solution.

An Analytical State Transition Matrix for Orbits Perturbed by an Oblate Spheroid

An analytical state transition matrix and its inverse, which include the short period and secular effects of the second zonal harmonic, were developed from the nonsingular PS satellite theory. The fact that the independent variable in the PS theory is not time is in no respect disadvantageous, since any explicit analytical solution must be expressed in the true or eccentric anomaly. This is shown to be the case for the simple conic matrix. The PS theory allows for a concise, accurate, and algorithmically simple state transition matrix. The improvement over the conic matrix ranges from 2 to 4 digits accuracy.

The dwarf spheroidal galaxy in Draco. III - Proper motion membership probabilities

PDS astrometry from photographic plates of the Draco dwarf galaxy is used to derive proper motion membership probabilities for stars measured in earlier photometric studies. It is found that removing probable foreground stars from the color-magnitude diagram of Draco tends to strengthen earlier conclusions about the structure of the giant and subgiant branches. The possible existence of an upper horizontal branch containing core helium-burning stars of more than one solar mass is still questionable. A reduced proper motion diagram for probable foreground stars is presented and discussed briefly.

Quenched magnetite in cretaceous-tertiary boundary microtekite-like spheroid

The magnetite containing spheres collected from a kt boundary localities in Italy were analyzed. It was found that these spheres contain relatively high concentrations of Ir. The spheres were analyzed for siderophile elements Ir, Pt, Au, Pd, Os, and Re. Elements Ir, Pt, Pd, and Au were found in high concentrations in magnetic spheres and their concentrations are similar to those in most meteorites. It is suggested that the magnetite spheres do not contain a meteorite component which may be a relic of the kt event.

The discrete prolate spheroidal filter as a digital signal processing tool

The discrete prolate spheriodall (DPS) filter is one of the glass of nonrecursive finite impulse response (FIR) filters. The DPS filter is superior to other filters in this class in that it has maximum energy concentration in the frequency passband and minimum ringing in the time domain. A mathematical development of the DPS filter properties is given, along with information required to construct the filter. The properties of this filter were compared with those of the more commonly used filters of the same class. Use of the DPS filter allows for particularly meaningful statements of data time/frequency resolution cell values. The filter forms an especially useful tool for digital signal processing.
