Spreading Sequence System for Full Connectivity Relay Network

Fully connected uplink and downlink fully connected relay network systems using pseudo-noise spreading and despreading sequences subjected to maximizing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. The relay network systems comprise one or more transmitting units, relays, and receiving units connected via a communication network. The transmitting units, relays, and receiving units each may include a computer for performing the methods and steps described herein and transceivers for transmitting and/or receiving signals. The computer encodes and/or decodes communication signals via optimum adaptive PN sequences found by employing Cholesky decompositions and singular value decompositions (SVD). The PN sequences employ channel state information (CSI) to more effectively and more securely computing the optimal sequences.

Thermal Inspection of a Composite Fuselage Section Using theMethod of Proper Generalized Decomposition

Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) is a reduced order modeling technique for the simulation of physical systems whose governing equations depend on boundary conditions, initial conditions, material properties, and geometric parameters. It uses separated representations of system covariates combined with an iterative approximation method known as successive enrichment in order to compute an accurate parameter-dependent approximation to the full governing equations. PGD can also be used as an alternative to the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of a matrix and therefore as an alternative to PCA thermography. In this paper PGD was used to analyze data derived from the inspection of a composite fuselage forward section using flash thermography, and the results were compared against the standard PCA approach.

Leveraging Multi-Primary PS-InSAR Configurations for the Robust Estimation of Coastal Subsidence

InSAR is a key technique used to constrain contributions of diverse processes to coastal subsidence, also known as vertical land motion (VLM). However, coastal environments can pose major challenges for InSAR due to natural disturbances that degrade interferogram quality. We describe a new multi-primary pairing strategy for persistent scatterer InSAR (PS-InSAR) to estimate subsidence in challenging coastal environments. Our method retains only consistent PS candidates across multiprimary substacks and solves for redundant velocity observations using SVD-based inversion, similar to the conventional small baseline subset (SBAS) method. Through simulations and a case study comparing with single-primary PS-InSAR and conventional SBAS techniques, we show that our pairing strategy reduces temporal and spatial uncertainty in subsidence estimates in the presence of strong but temporary decorrelation loss, even with increased distance from the reference point. Moreover, our method visibly dampens time-series variation and decreases standard error in our time series fit by nearly 2x in our case study. Thus, we find that implementing a multi-primary PS-InSAR configuration is a simple method of increasing the robustness of VLM estimates in challenging coastal environments.

First Measurement of Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged Current Triple Differential Cross Section on Argon

The field of accelerator neutrino experiments is entering an era of precision oscillation measurements where the remaining unknown neutrino measurements will be determined. The upcoming DUNE and Hyper-K experiments aim to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and degree of Charge-Parity (CP) violation in the neutrino sector, providing potential insight on the matter-antimatter imbalance observed in the universe. However, these experiments require highly accurate measurements, and neutrino cross section modeling uncertainties may limit their capabilities. Cross section measurements at current- generation experiments can aid the development of neutrino interaction models to reduce these uncertainties. This is especially true for measurements of neutrino energy, as it drives neutrino oscillations and is of key importance to oscillation experiments. The MicroBooNE experiment uses a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) to produce neutrino-argon cross sections as one of its physics goals. The MicroBooNE detector’s fully active volume, precision reconstruction, and calorimetry information are leveraged in the Wire-Cell analysis to produce a muon neutrino selection that is 92% pure while maintaining 68% efficiency. A reconstruction chain featuring a fully 3D charge reconstruction and a graph-based particle trajectory fit are used to produce accurate measurements of lepton kinematics as well as visible hadronic energy produced in a neutrino interaction. This thesis presents the first neutrino-argon triple-differential cross section measurement, targeting inclusive charged-current final states. Wiener SVD unfolding is used to produce a measurement over neutrino energy, muon momentum, and muon scattering angle. A series of constrained goodness of fit tests are used to demonstrate the validity of MicroBooNE’s model in describing the distribution of reconstructed kinematics seen in data to ensure the accuracy of unfolding. The validated unfolding to neutrino energy represents a step forward in the field of neutrino cross sections, and demonstrates the capabilities of the LArTPC detector.

Neutron diffusion calculation in heterogeneous geometry based on local/global iteration using proper orthogonal decomposition

This study newly proposes a heterogeneous core calculation method based on local/global iteration using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). By using the singular value decomposition (SVD) and the low-rank approximation, appropriate POD bases for expanding the neutron flux can be obtained from snapshot data of the neutron flux obtained by fine mesh calculations. By projection using the POD bases, the dimension of the target equation (e.g., discretized neutron diffusion equation) can be dramatically reduced. In the proposed method, POD is effectively applied to each single assembly calculation (local calculation). Furthermore, using the local/global iteration, the effective neutron multiplication factor and the neutron flux distribution in the whole core geometry can be obtained by combining the numerical results of the local calculation for each fuel assembly and the global calculation for the whole core. As a feasibility study, the proposed method is applied to a one-dimensional heterogeneous core analysis, and the accuracy is investigated by changing the total number of POD bases. (authors)

Nanoscale Mapping and Defect-Assisted Manipulation of Surface Plasmon Resonances in 2D Bi 2 Te 3 /Sb 2 Te 3 In-Plane Heterostructures

Here, the Bi 2 Te 3 /Sb 2 Te 3 in-plane heterostructure is reported as a low-dimensional tunable chalcogenide well suited as plasmonic building block for the visible-UV spectral range. Electron-driven plasmon excitations of low-dimensional Bi 2 Te 3 /Sb 2 Te 3 are investigated by monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy spectrum imaging. To resolve the nanoscale spatial distribution of various local plasmonic resonances, singular value decomposition is used to disentangle the spectral data and identify the individual spectral contributions of various corner, edge, and face modes. Furthermore, defect-plasmon interactions are investigated both for nanoscale intrinsic and thermally induced extrinsic polygonal defects (in situ sublimation). Signature of defect-induced red shift ranging from a several hundreds of millielectronvolts to a few electronvolts, broadening of various plasmon response, together with selective enhancement and significant variations in their intensity are detected. This study highlights the presence of a heterointerface and identifies defects as physical tuning pathways to modulate the plasmonic response over a broad spectral range. Finally, the experimental observations are compared qualitatively and validated with numerical simulations using the electron-driven discrete dipole approximation. Low-dimensional Bi 2 Te 3 /Sb 2 Te 3 as a less explored plasmonic system holds great promises as emerging platform for integrated plasmonics. Furthermore, introducing controlled structural defects can open the door for nanoengineering of plasmonic properties in such systems.

To Fail or not to Fail: An Exploration of Machine Learning Techniques for Predictive Maintenance

Predictive maintenance refers to the ability to predict when machinery or systems need to be maintained. Making an accurate prediction is quite challenging given the costs for both over-estimating (unnecessary maintenance and reduction in availability of assets) and under-estimating (untimely breakdowns and possible loss of equipment or lives). To address these challenges researchers were able to develop new approaches for analyzing oil samples taken extracting samples from oil-wetted machinery that may provide information critical to developing predictive capabilities. We consider the problem from both supervised (though data limited) and unsupervised approaches and provide a first look into a data driven approach for identification of condition indicators. Through this work we identify a collection of candidate features that can form the basis of condition indicators for both a high level discrimination of failure vs. normal operation as well as a set for potential failure mode identification. Finally, we present an anomaly detection framework for detecting failures which can be a viable solution for an onboard analysis tool in deployed systems.
