CO/d-3 Delta sub i to X-1 Sigma +/ fluorescence from photodissociation of CO2 by 923 A photons

Measurements of vacuum ultraviolet fluorescence from the photodissociation of CO2 by photons from a N IV line emission source at a wavelength of 923 A have revealed a second CO band system in addition to the expected emission bands. Spectra with time resolution were obtained and the fluorescence lifetime and the dependence of fluorescence intensity on CO2 pressure were measured. An analysis of this data has permitted the second band system to be identified as originating from CO(d-3 Delta sub i to X-1 Sigma +) transitions.

A shock-tube determination of the SiO /A 1 Pi - X 1 Sigma +/ transition moment

The sum of the squares of the electronic transition moments for the A 1 Pi - X 1 Sigma + band system of SiO has been determined from absorption measurements conducted in the reflected-shock region of a shock tube. The test gas was produced by shock-heating a mixture of N2O, SiCl4, and Ar, and the spectra were recorded photographically in the 260-290-nm wavelength range. The values of the sum as a function of internuclear distance between 2.8 and 3.3 Bohr were determined by comparing the measured absorption spectrum with that produced by a line-by-line synthetic-spectrum calculation which accounted for instrumental broadening. The value of the sum so deduced at an internuclear distance of 3.0 Bohr was 1.0 + or - 0.3 atomic units.

An isentropic and sigma coordinate hybrid numerical model - Model development and some initial tests

A solution is presented for matching boundary conditions across the interface of an isentropic and sigma coordinate hybrid model. A hybrid model based on the flux form of the primitive equations is developed which allows direct vertical exchange between the model domains, satisfies conservation principles with respect to transport processes, and maintains a smooth transition across the interface without need for artificial adjustment or parameterization schemes. The initial hybrid model simulations of a jet streak propagating in a zonal channel are used to test the feasibility of the hybrid model approach. High efficiency of the hybrid model is demonstrated.

Quenching rates and fluorescence efficiency in the A 2 Sigma + state of OH

Direct lifetime measurements at pressures up to 25 torr are used to determine the quenching rates for the A 2 Sigma + (v = 0) state of OH due to N2, O2, H2O, and air. The results are found to corroborate quenching values obtained in a similar manner in the millitorr pressure range and show that the quenching cross sections of N2 is pressure independent at least up to 25 torr, that the quenching cross section of O2 is also likely to be pressure independent, and that the quenching values deduced from low-pressure experiments can be safely employed for atmospheric measurements of OH.

Soft X-ray observations of the binary sigma Cr B with HEAO-1

The detection of X-ray emission in the 0.15-2 keV band from the vicinity of the radio-emitting binary star HD 146361 in the binary system sigma-Corona Borealis, with low-energy detectors of the HEAO A-2 experiment, is reported. Graphs are presented that show plots of count rate versus scan angle in half-degree bins, that are obtained from the superposition of the 13 source scans. Attention is given to source position and identification as well as to the energy spectrum of the source.

OH/A 2 Sigma + - X 2 Pi sub i/ yield from H2O photodissociation in 1050-1370 A

The cross section and quantum yield for the production of the OH(A 2 Sigma + - X 2 Pi sub i) emission from H2O photodissociation by synchrotron radiation in the region 1050-1370 A are determined. Measurements of the photoemission and photoabsorption cross sections obtained for incident radiation bandwidths of 2 A reveal different vibrational structures in the range 1250-1370 A, and the photoemission is attributed to the 3a1-4a1 valence and 3a1-3sa1 Rydberg transitions. Photoemission quantum yields determined from the ratio of photoemission to photoabsorption cross sections are found to increase sharply at a threshold of 1362-5 A to a peak of 11% at 1300 A, then to decrease slowly with decreasing wavelength. Implications of the results for the dissociation processes of H2O are considered.

Electron-impact excitation of the singlet states of N2. I - The Birge-Hopfield system /b 1 pi u - X 1 Sigma g +/

Results of a study of the electron-impact excitation of the b 1 pi u state of N2, one of the singlet states thought to be excited by precipitating electrons in the auroral zones, and of its predissociation and radiative relaxation through the emission of the Birge-Hopfield band system (b 1 pi u - X 1 Sigma g +) are presented. A collimated electron beam was passed through N2 gas producing a variety of atomic states through dissociative excitation, and the radiation resulting from relaxation of these states was observed by VUV and visible-IR monochromators. Absolute emission cross sections for 11 Birge-Hopfield bands are obtained for energies from threshold to 500 eV, and used to calculate the absolute transition probabilities for BH(1, v-prime) bands and the variation of the electric dipole moment with internuclear distance. With the exception of the v-prime equals 1, 5 and 6 vibrational levels, all b 1 pi u levels are found to predissociate with a specific predissociation branching ratio greater than 0.99, representing a major source of nitrogen atoms.

Excitation of the b 3 Sigma u + state of H2 by electron impact - Semiclassical exchange potentials at intermediate energies

Integrated and differential cross sections for the excitation of the b 3 Sigma u + state of H2, from the ground state, by electron impact, are presented. The energy range of interest is 10.5 to 40.0 eV. The close-coupling equations for this process are solved in five different exchange approximations: exact two-electron exchange terms, no orthogonality; exact two-electron exchange terms, orthogonality; semiclassical exchange terms, no orthogonality, with barrier term; semiclassical exchange terms, no orthogonality, no barrier term; and semiclassical exchange terms, orthogonality, with barrier term. The purpose is to judge the reliability of the semiclassical exchange approximation for electronic excitation of molecules by electron impact at intermediate energies. The results are compared with recent theoretical estimates for the same process.

A general purpose computer-to-computer interface Xerox Sigma computer-to-DEC PDP 11 computer

The Sigma/PDP 11 Interface is a general-purpose system for interconnecting a Xerox Sigma series computer and a DEC PDP 11 series computer. Although the unit is designed to operate in a real-time environment, it can be used in nonreal-time modes as well. Several features, designed to facilitate using the system in varied applications are included in the unit; for example, the features can be used to isolate software or hardware faults. This paper contains descriptions of the hardware and software operations of the interface and examples of real-time applications in the research environment at Ames Research Center.

Velocity dispersions of low luminosity ellipticals - L approximately equal to sigma-cubed

A complete sample of elliptical galaxies in the core of the Virgo cluster is used to derive a relation between stellar velocity dispersion and luminosity. L is found to approximately equal sigma to the nth power, where n = 3.2 + or - 0.2 over two decades of luminosity, with a scatter of 0.38 mag. The possibility of curvature in the relation or rotational support of the galaxies is examined, and a derivation of a law of slope 3 is presented and compared with the derivation for a slope of 4. It is concluded that the lack of increased scatter as the points deviate from a slope of 4 implies that rotation is not important.

Off-nadir antenna bias correction using Amazon rain forest sigma deg data

The radar response from the Amazon rain forest was studied to determine the suitability of this region for use as a standard target to calibrate a scatterometer like that proposed for the National Ocean Satellite System (NOSS). Backscattering observations made by the SEASAT-1 scatterometer system show the Amazon rain forest to be a homogeneous, azimuthally-isotropic, radar target which is insensitive to polarization. The variation with angle of incidence may be adequately modeled as sigma deg (dB) = alpha theta + beta with typical values for the incidence-angle coefficient from 0.07 dB deg to 0.15 dB/deg. A small diurnal effect occurs, with measurements at sunrise being 0.5 dB to 1 dB higher than the rest of the day. Maximum likelihood estimation algorithms are presented which permit determination of relative bias and true pointing angle for each beam. Specific implementation of these algorithms for the proposed NOSS scatterometer system is also discussed.

Ab initio calculation of the X 1 Sigma + state of CsH

Stevens et al. (1981) considered CsH as a two electron problem, but simulated the Cs core electrons by an empirical pseudopotential following the work by Bardsley (1970). These potentials, since they are derived empirically, include the relativistic effects and the atomic core-valence interactions. However, molecular core-core interactions are not accounted for. Stevens et al. obtained an R(e) value which is too small. This result was attributed to uncorrected core (proton)-core interactions in the molecule. The present investigation is concerned with a resolution of the discrepancies between the results of earlier studies. The X 1 Sigma + ground state of CsH is recalculated. The calculation employs a nine valence electron relativistic effective core potential (RECP) for Cs. The bonding in CsH is found to involve a Cs(6s)-H(1s) bond but with a significant ionic (Cs+H-) component.

Five years of photometry of Sigma Geminorum

Thirteen observatories have collaborated in obtaining five years of photoelectric photometry for the bright, K1 III RS CVn binary Sigma Geminorum. Except for one year, the light curve has exhibited two minima which are separated by approximately half a cycle. At the 1977.2 epoch of discovery one minimum was shallower, but as of 1982.2 they have become comparable in depth. During the 1979-80 season, the light curve changed shape rapidly, with the shallower minimum becoming as deep as the other within a period of no more than 80 days. The overall brightness range during the five years in V has been 4.13-4.29 mag, and it is found that the times of both minima can be fit with a photometric period of 19.423 days.
