Probing putative orbital differentiation effects via Eu 2+ spin dynamics in Sr 1-x Eu x Fe 2 As 2

Here, in this work, we report x-ray powder diffraction, elemental analysis, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) in single crystals of Sr 1-x Eu x Fe 2 As 2 . We observed a breakdown of the previously reported scaling between the Eu 2+ Korringa relaxation rate obtained from ESR and the spin density wave temperature evolution for Sr-rich samples. This result suggests a distinct evolution of the orbital differentiation of the Fe 3d bands along the Sr-based series when compared to the Ba counterpart. We argue that this difference is related to a larger splitting between the structural (tetragonal-to-orthorhombic) and the Fe-driven spin density wave transitions induced by Eu doping in this series. In fact, our results indicate that the two transitions follow an opposite x-Eu dependence for Sr-concentrated samples. Our work shows that Sr 1-x Eu x Fe 2 As 2 series and the comparison with their Ba-based counterparts are exciting platforms to be explored for understanding the interplay among orbital differentiation, magnetism, and structural distortions in the iron pnictides

Complex magnetic structure in Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 with isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimer

We report detailed magnetic, transport, heat-capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements of Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 , a compound consisting of isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimers. We show that this system develops long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at T N ~ 60 K without structural distortion or metal-insulator-type transition, which is in sharp contrast to other Barium Ruthenate trimer systems such as 9R-BaRuO 3 and Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 . A complex magnetic structure is revealed which is attributable to the magnetic frustration due to competing exchange interactions between Ru ions on different crystallographic sites within the Ru 3 O 12 trimer and different degree of orbital hybridization on different Ru-sites. In conclusion, we have also investigated the magnetic structure of Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 for comparisons.

Synthesis and physical properties of a new layered ferromagnet Cr 1.21 Te 2

Single crystals of a new layered compound, Cr 1.21 Te 2 , were synthesized via a vapor transport method. The crystal structure and physical properties were characterized by single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, zero-field heat capacity, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Cr 1.21 Te 2 , containing two Cr sites, crystalizes in a trigonal structure with a space group P-3 (No. 147). The Cr site in the interstitial layer is partially occupied. Physical property characterizations indicate that Cr 1.21 Te 2 is metallic with hole pockets at the Fermi energy and undergoes a ferromagnetic phase transition at ~ 173 K. The magnetic moments align along the c axis in the ferromagnetic state. Based on low-temperature magnetization, the spin stiffness constant, D, and spin excitation gap, Δ , were estimated according to Bloch's law to be D = 94 ± 17 meV Å 2 and Δ = 0.45 ± 0.33 meV, suggesting its possible application as a low dimensional ferromagnet.

Conventional superconductivity in single-crystalline BiPt

Binary Bi-Pd/Pt systems have attracted a lot of interest because of their topologically nontrivial nature along with superconductivity. We report the structural and superconducting properties of high-quality single-crystalline BiPt using a comprehensive range of experimental techniques, including X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, muon spin rotation/relaxation (𝜇⁢SR), magnetization, resistivity, and heat capacity. Our findings establish that BiPt is a weak type-II superconductor with a transition temperature (𝑇 𝑐 ) of 1.2 K which exhibits pronounced anisotropic superconducting characteristics attributed to its hexagonal crystal structure. Magnetization and electronic transport studies reveal that BiPt lies within the dirty limit, while 𝜇⁢SR and heat capacity data indicate conventional 𝑠-wave superconductivity that maintains time-reversal symmetry. Here, this work provides valuable insights into the pairing symmetry and superconducting mechanism of topologically trivial BiPt, a sound comparison system for other Bi-based topologically nontrivial superconductors.

Conductive surface states and Kondo exhaustion in insulating YbIr 3 Si 7

The interplay of Kondo screening and magnetic ordering in strongly correlated materials containing local moments is a subtle problem. Usually the number of conduction electrons per unit cell matches or exceeds the number of moments, and a Kondo-screened heavy Fermi liquid develops at low temperatures. Changing the pressure, magnetic field, or chemical doping can displace this heavy Fermi liquid in favor of a magnetically ordered state. Alternatively, Kondo singlet formation can be suppressed when the number of conduction electrons is small compared to the number of magnetic moments, known as the Kondo exhaustion scenario. Furthermore we report the discovery of such an “exhausted” Kondo lattice material, YbIr 3 Si 7 , where the bulk electrical conductivity tends to zero in the antiferromagnetic state below the Néel temperature T N = 4.1 K, as all the free carriers are consumed in the formation of Kondo singlets. By contrast, the surface is conducting, as the Yb 3+ ions relax into larger nonmagnetic Yb 2+ in the presence of reduced chemical pressure, which shifts the chemical potential.

Spin-lattice and spin-electronic interactions in the van der Waals semiconductor C⁢o 2 ⁢P 2 ⁢S 6

Here, we report the results of a temperature-dependent reflection spectroscopy study, across a wide energy range (~ 0.01 to 3 eV), of unsubstituted and 40% Zn substituted for Co, for the transition-metal phosphorus trichalcogenide, C⁢o 2 ⁢P 2 ⁢S 6 . We observe a transition from a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic state with a Néel temperature at T N ~ 120 K that is completely suppressed in Zn-substituted samples. At 300 K we identify four narrow (~ 1 meV) infrared active phonon modes while at 70 K (below T N ) we observe that the low-energy phonons, dominated by Co motion, resolve into two modes. These low-energy modes are asymmetric, indicating coupling to a broad electronic continuum. We also report a broad (~ 30 meV) low-temperature infrared absorption band that appears near T N that we suggest is determined by a multiphonon-assisted 2-magnon absorption process. At 300 K in higher-energy spectra, we observe considerable absorption starting from 0.20 ± 0.02 eV which we associate with inter-C⁢o 2+ ion 3⁢d transitions. At temperatures below T N the number of electronic absorption bands increases from 4 to 6, indicating a lowering of the symmetry around the C⁢o 2+ ions. On substituting 40% Zn for Co, the antiferromagnetic transition is suppressed along with temperature-dependent changes in the phonon and electronic spectra. The temperature-dependent spectral changes indicate strongly correlated behavior between the infrared active lattice vibrations, the electronic excitations, and magnetism in unsubstituted C⁢o 2 ⁢P 2 ⁢S 6 .

Investigations into the Ternary NaF-KF-UF4 Salt System – Phase A

A knowledge gap exists in the data and understanding of fresh fuel salt and irradiated multicomponent fuel salt systems thermophysical properties. Quantifying these properties is necessary for the design and construction of test reactors, as well as the licensing of future commercial molten-salt reactors. To facilitate thermal property determination on a proposed fuel salt composition for Seaborg Technologies, several samples containing depleted uranium tetrafluoride (UF4), sodium fluoride (NaF), and potassium fluoride (KF) were blended, and a melt temperature analysis was performed. From the melting temperature analysis, it was determined that sample Seaborg-7, a ternary salt composition of 26.4UF4-24.7KF-48.9NaF (mol%), was very near a ternary eutectic point. Therefore, thermal properties such as melting temperature, salt stability, density, heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and viscosity were experimentally determined on the Seaborg-7 salt. These measurements document the baseline properties of fresh fuel salt as a function of temperature, where future experiments on irradiated fuel salt will provide a holistic perspective on the change of thermophysical properties during reactor operations. Several precision instruments were used to collect property data, and instrument calibrations and data collection were performed and documented in a standardized and reproducible manner with meticulous detail. This process ensured that the measurement procedures and resulting data can readily be duplicated elsewhere. The Seaborg-7 salt was shown to be stable at temperatures up to 900°C, as no mass change was observed upon repeated heating and cooling. The peak melting temperature was determined to be 547°C (557°C endset). The enthalpy of fusion (??H?_fus^o) was determined to be 167.5 ± 2.7 J/g while the enthalpy of crystallization (??H?_c^o) was determined to be -147.8 ± 13.3 J/g. In addition to the eutectic melting peak, upon heating, several pre eutectic peaks were observed, occurring at 470°C (onset) and 499°C (peak). Specific heat capacity measurements showed a slightly increasing trend with respect to temperature in the solid phase, while the liquid-specific heat capacity showed a somewhat flat trend with an average value of 106.1 ± 1.24 J/mol·K between 600 to 800°C. Three independent trials using the Seaborg-7 salt determined the density to be ?(T) = 4.908 – 0.000363·T(°C), validated between 32 to 200°C, and ?(T) = 4.808 – 0.00113·T(°C), validated between ~575 to 850°C. Thermal diffusivity was determined for the liquid state and is represented by the linear equation y = 0.1581 + 0.000207·T(°C) between 550 to 850°C. The viscosity was determined from 600 to 800°C and is represented by the exponential fit equation, ? (mPa·s) = 736.58e^(-0.006·T(°C)). This report documents the conclusion of fuel salt thermophysical property measurements for the Seaborg SPP, Phase A project.

Emergent spin-1 Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin- 1 2 ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb 2 Cu 2 Mo 3 O 12 has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-12 chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a unique class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

Revisiting spin ice physics in the ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlore Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7

Pyrochlore materials are characterized by their hallmark network of corner-sharing rare-earth tetrahedra, which can produce a wide array of complex magnetic ground states. Ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlores often obey the “two-in-two-out” spin ice rules, which can lead to a highly degenerate spin structure. Large moment systems, such as Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 , tend to host a classical spin ice state with low-temperature spin freezing and emergent magnetic monopoles. Systems with smaller effective moments, such as Pr 3+ -based pyrochlores, have been proposed as excellent candidates for hosting a “quantum spin ice” characterized by entanglement and a slew of exotic quasiparticle excitations. However, experimental evidence for a quantum spin ice state has remained elusive. Here, in this work, we show that the low-temperature magnetic properties of Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7 satisfy several important criteria for continued consideration as a quantum spin ice. We find that Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7 exhibits two distinct spin-correlation time scales of τ ≥ 10 –4 and ~10 –10 s in the spin ice regime. Our comprehensive bulk characterization and neutron scattering measurements enable us to map out the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram, producing results consistent with expectations for a ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlore. We identify key hallmarks of spin ice physics and show that the application of small magnetic fields (μ 0 H c ~0.5 T) suppresses the spin ice state and induces a field-polarized, ordered spin-ice phase. Together, our work clarifies the current state of Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7 and encourages future studies aimed at exploring the potential for a quantum spin ice ground state in this system.

Anisotropic thermal behavior of extrusion-based large scale additively manufactured carbon-fiber reinforced thermoplastic structures

Large format additive manufacturing (AM) enables rapid manufacturing of large parts and structures with minimum waste in material and energy. Extrusion-based AM deposition processes provide parts with highly anisotropic thermal properties, which are not typically reflected in textbook values for these materials. In order to develop accurate models that describe the directionally dependent thermal behavior of these materials in processing and service, accurate measurements of specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity are required. Here, this work characterizes, documents, and analyzes the effect of the anisotropic nature of the extrusion-based deposition process on the specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity of the resulting AM products. All measurements were made over a temperature range of 20–180°C using the transient plane source technique, also referred to as the hot disk technique. Three of the most commonly used large format AM feedstock materials that utilize carbon fiber reinforcement were examined in this work: acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polyphenylene sulfide and polyphenylsulfone. Finally, these findings can serve as a thermal design/process guideline for future large format AM applications.

Spin disorder in a stacking polytype of a layered magnet

Strongly correlated ground states and exotic quasiparticle excitations in low-dimensional systems are central research topics in the solid-state research community. The present work develops a layered material and explores the physical properties. Single crystals of 3⁢R–Na 2 ⁢MnTe⁢O 6 were synthesized via a flux method. Single-crystal x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal a crystal structure with ABC-type stacking and an R–3 space group, which establishes this material as a stacking polytype to previously reported 2⁢H–Na 2 ⁢MnTe⁢O 6 . Magnetic- and heat-capacity measurements demonstrate dominant antiferromagnetic interactions, the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 0.5 K, and field-dependent short-range magnetic correlations. A structural transition at ~23 K observed in dielectric measurements may be related to displacements of the Na positions. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that 3⁢R–Na 2 ⁢MnTe⁢O 6 displays low-dimensional magnetism, disordered structure and spins, and the system displays a rich structure variety.

Low-temperature spin dynamics in the TmFeO 3 orthoferrite with a non-Kramers ion

We investigate the magnetic dynamics of the orthorhombic perovskite TmFeO 3 at low temperatures, below the spin reorientation transition at TSR≈80 K, by means of time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy. We find that the magnetic excitation spectrum combines two emergent collective modes associated with different magnetic sublattices. The Fe subsystem orders below TN~632 K into a canted antiferromagnetic structure and exhibits sharp, high-energy magnon excitations. We describe them using linear spin-wave theory, and reveal a pronounced anisotropy between in- and out-of-plane exchange interactions, which was mainly neglected in previous reports on the spin dynamics in orthoferrites. At lower energies, we find two crystalline electrical field (CEF) excitations of Tm3+ ions at energies of ~2 and 5 meV. In contrast to the sister compound YbFeO 3 , where the Yb 3+ ions form quasi-one-dimensional chains along the c axis, the Tm excitations show dispersion along both directions in the (0KL) scattering plane. Analysis of the neutron scattering polarization factor reveals a longitudinal polarization of the 2 meV excitation. To evaluate the effect of the CEF on the Tm 3+ ions, we perform point-charge model calculations, and their results quantitatively capture the main features of Tm single-ion physics, such as energies, intensities, and polarization of the CEF transitions, and the type of magnetic anisotropy.

Towards cubic symmetry for Ir 4 + : Structure and magnetism of the antifluorite K 2 IrBr 6

Here, crystal structure, electronic state of Ir 4 + , and magnetic properties of the antifluorite compound K 2 IrBr 6 are studied using high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), thermodynamic and transport measurements, and ab initio calculations. The crystal symmetry is reduced from cubic at room temperature to tetragonal below 170 K and eventually to monoclinic below 122 K. These changes are tracked by the evolution of the noncubic crystal-field splitting Δ measured by RIXS. Nonmonotonic changes in Δ are ascribed to the competing effects of the tilt, rotation, and deformation of the IrBr 6 octahedra as well as tetragonal strain on the electronic levels of Ir 4 + . The Néel temperature of T N = 11.9 K exceeds that of the isostructural K 2 IrCl 6 , and the magnitude of frustration on the fcc spin lattice decreases. We argue that the replacement of Cl by Br weakens electronic correlations and enhances magnetic couplings.

Magnetization Process of Atacamite: A Case of Weakly Coupled S = 1/2 Sawtooth Chains

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the mineral atacamite Cu 2 Cl(OH) 3 . Density-functional theory yields a Hamiltonian describing anisotropic sawtooth chains with weak 3D connections. Experimentally, we fully characterize the antiferromagnetically ordered state. Here, magnetic order shows a complex evolution with the magnetic field, while, starting at 31.5 T, we observe a plateaulike magnetization at about M sat /2. Based on complementary theoretical approaches, we show that the latter is unrelated to the known magnetization plateau of a sawtooth chain. Instead, we provide evidence that the magnetization process in atacamite is a field-driven canting of a 3D network of weakly coupled sawtooth chains that form giant moments.

Quantifying Uncertainties in Heat Capacity Measurements of Molten Salts Determined Using Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Uncertainty in specific heat capacity values of a molten salt determined by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was assessed based on the precision of replicate measurements of heat flows used in the calculation and effects of corrections that are commonly made to heat flow measurements. The ratio method of determining heat capacity was applied using the results of replicate heat flow measurements made with two empty cells, a sapphire reference material, and three samples of a doped NaCl-UCl 3 salt mixture. Replicate measurements with empty cells were used to quantify the effects of system instabilities and sensitivities on the measured heat flows of sapphire and salt. The combined effects of uncertainties in individual heat flow measurements made with blank cells using this system were quantified to be 2.6 μV based on isothermal holds before and after the scan, with cell placement adding the greatest uncertainty. This value was used as the tolerance for accepting background-corrected heat flows measured with sapphire and salt to calculate the specific heat capacity. The acceptable heat flows measured for sapphire and salt over the temperature range of 540 to 725 °C resulted in calculated specific heat capacity values ranging from 0.53 to 0.91 J g −1 K −1 with an overall average value of 0.70 J g −1 K −1 and an uncertainty of 0.22 J g −1 K −1 at the 99 % confidence level. The combined uncertainty in the specific heat capacity masked detection of any effect of temperature or salt composition that occurred.

Type-II superconductivity at 9K in Pb–Bi alloy

In the present work, we report the synthesis of Pb–Bi alloy with enhanced Tc of up to 9K, which is higher than that of Pb. The alloy is synthesized via a solid-state reaction route in the vacuum-encapsulated quartz tube at 700°C in an automated furnace. The synthesized sample is characterized by X-ray Diffraction(XRD) and Energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX) for its phase purity and elemental composition. Rietveld refinement of XRD reveals that the end product is a majority hexagonal Pb 7 Bi 3 , with minor rhombohedral Bi. The electronic transport measurement shows metallic behavior with the Debye temperature of 108K and a superconductivity transition temperature (T c ) below 9K, which is the maximum to date for any reported Pb–Bi alloy, Pb or Bi at ambient pressure. Partial substitution of Bi at the Pb site may modify the free density of electronic states within the BCS model to attain the optimum T c , which is higher by around 2K from the reported T c of Pb. The superconductor phase diagram derived from magneto-transport measurements reveals that the synthesized alloy is a conventional superconductor with an upper critical field (H c2 ) of 3.9 T, which lies well within the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The magnetization measurements carried out following ZFC(Zero Field Cool) protocols infer that the synthesized alloy is a bulk superconductor below 9K. The isothermal M-H(Magnetization vs. Field) measurements performed below T c establish it as a type-II superconductor. Furthermore, the specific heat capacity measurements show that the Pb–Bi alloy is a strongly coupled bulk superconductor below around 9K with possibly two superconducting gaps.
