Practical Operations of Energy Storage Providing Ancillary Services: From Day-Ahead to Real-Time

As renewable resources are increasingly penetrating power systems, energy storage systems (ESSs) become essential in providing both energy arbitrage and ancillary services. Because of its high flexibility, ESSs have been taken into account in the daily operation of the bulk power system in many places. This paper proposes a general framework in the current electricity market environment to help system operators model the participation of multi-type ESSs and evaluate the performance of both energy arbitrage and reserve provision. We discuss different levels of ESSs' flexibility in providing ancillary services and also consider a deliberate and practical implementation of the modeling. This framework can be seamlessly integrated into the daily market operation without sacrificing computational efficiency. Numerical experiments validate the efficacy of the proposed framework and show that ESSs possess excellent potential in providing ancillary services for the bulk power system.

Grid-Scale Electricity Storage at Lowest Possible Cost Enabled by Pumped Heat Electricity Storage (Final Report)

Grid-scale energy storage technologies that can provide greater than 10 hours of electricity at full power address a critical need for full penetration of renewables on electricity grids worldwide, minimize renewable curtailment, and maximize grid security and reliability. Pumped Heat Energy Storage (PHES) systems can store energy thermally in any location at the low costs necessary for displacing fossil fuels, reducing foreign fuel imports, and reducing emissions to maintain the energy security of the United States. The award allowed Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) and Malta, Inc. (Malta) to advance the PHES concept to a proof-of-concept demonstration for a kW-scale system. The project focused on system operation and integration. The main project objectives were: 1. Address first implementation challenges 2. Explore system control strategies and operation 3. Translate lessons learned to the full-scale system Through these objectives the project completes a first demonstration of this technology and reduces the technical risk associated with a full-scale system.

Imaging the Phase Evolution of the Li-N-H Hydrogen Storage System

Complex metal hydrides provide high-density hydrogen storage, which is essential for vehicular applications. However, the utility of these materials has been limited by thermodynamic and kinetic barriers present during the dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation processes as new phases form inside parent phases. Better understanding of the mixed-phase mesostructures and their interfaces may assist in improving cyclability. In this work, the evolution of the phases during hydrogenation of lithium nitride and dehydrogenation of lithium amide with lithium hydride are probed with scanning-transmission X-ray microscopy at the nitrogen K edge. With this technique, intriguing core-shell structures were observed in particles of both partially hydrogenated Li 3 N and partially dehydrogenated LiNH 2 + 2 LiH. The potential contributions of both internal hydrogen mobility and interfacial energies on the generation of these structures are discussed.

Long-Life, Ultrahigh-Nickel Cathodes with Excellent Air Storage Stability for High-Energy Density Lithium-Based Batteries

With increased energy density and cost advantage, ultrahigh-nickel layered oxides (LiNi x M 1-x O 2 , x = 0.9 - 1.0) are becoming front-runner as cathodes for next-generation lithium-based batteries, yet their commercialization is blocked both by severe capacity fade and exponentially aggravated air degradation. Thus, it is imperative to find effective solutions to address these issues simultaneously. Here, a significant enhancement in both the cycling and air storage stability of the ultrahigh-Ni cathode LiNi 0.94 Co 0.06 O 2 is achieved via a distinctive phosphoric acid treatment strategy. The modified cathode displays remarkably improved capacity retention (from 36 % to 80 % after 1,000 cycles) and rate capability (from 0 to 105 mA h g -1 at 30C rate) in pouch cells. Impressively, the modified cathode, after air storage for 450 days, maintains the morphology and 92% of the initial capacity of the fresh sample with excellent cyclability. Comprehensive interphase and structural analyses reveal that the enhanced electrochemical performance is due to a highly stabilized electrode/electrolyte interphase that suppresses electrode corrosion and lattice reconstruction. The excellent air stability results from an adsorption-buffering effect enabled by phosphoric acid to air attack. Finally, the study demonstrates an engineering pathway to improve the cycling and air stability, facilitating the practical viability of high-capacity, affordable, ultrahigh-Ni cathodes in lithium-based batteries.

Planning Considerations for Energy Storage in Resilience Applications. Outcomes from the NELHA Energy Storage Conference's Policy and Regulatory Workshop

This report presents the proceedings and lessons learned at a conference workshop that discussed the role of energy storage in supporting electric system resilience, which took place at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority’s (NELHA) Conference on Energy Storage Trends and Opportunities in December 2018. Staff from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) made two presentations on the topic of resilience: the first covering a conceptual framework for incorporating resilience into resource planning processes, and the second covering a tool developed for microgrid planning that can assist in identifying resource mixes that will meet site-specific resilience needs. Throughout the presentations, presenters and workshop participants discussed the obstacles to improving electric system resilience and potential solutions for overcoming them. Following the workshop, the authors conducted additional research to further contextualize the topics discussed at the workshop and to frame the resulting recommendations for future engagement on this subject by the Department of Energy and the national laboratories.

Identifying Barriers to Solar and Storage Hybrids: Modeled vs. empirical wholesale market value and net-value for co-located solar + storage projects [Slides]

Large-scale (1MW+) co-located solar and battery storage projects are expanding rapidly in the United States, but their realized contribution to the bulk power system remains poorly understood because public project-level operating data are limited. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates the wholesale market value of 280 operational photovoltaic-plus-storage (PV+S) projects across the seven ISOs/RTOs and 19 additional balancing authorities, representing roughly 95% of the U.S. PV+S fleet in 2024. We model optimized hourly dispatch under energy, capacity, and ancillary-service market opportunities and compare the resulting value with standalone PV value, project-specific levelized cost estimates, and empirical operating or revenue data where available.

The Sporadic History of Rubidium and its Role in Corrosion of Steel Related to Nuclear Material Storage

The influence of rubidium (Rb), both in its metallic and oxidized states, on the corrosion resistance of steels has direct relevance to the storage of radioactive Kr-85 containing nuclear materials. Kr-85 undergoes a ß-decay to generate stable, metallic Rb. The literature to date is sparse, contained primarily in company reports and divisive as to whether Rb metal, or its oxides, can lead to corrosion of steel materials. In both the direct storage of Kr-85 and used nuclear fuel that will contain Kr-85, if Rb is corrosive then continual decay of the Kr-85 will generate an increasingly corrosive environment for the steel canister it is stored in. This review was written to consolidate the known data to date on Rb corrosion of steels to identify consistencies, contradictions and remaining gaps in our understanding of the Rb : steel system.

Elucidating Electron Storage and Distribution within the Pentaheme Scaffold of Cytochrome c Nitrite Reductase (NrfA)

Cytochrome c nitrite reductases (CcNIR or NrfA) play important roles in the global nitrogen cycle by conserving the usable nitrogen in the soil. Here, the electron storage and distribution properties within the pentaheme scaffold of Geobacter lovleyi NrfA were investigated via EPR spectroscopy coupled with chemical titration experiments. Initially, a chemical reduction method was established to sequentially add electrons to the fully oxidized protein, one equivalent at a time. The step–by–step reduction of the hemes was then followed using UV–Vis and EPR spectroscopy. EPR–spectral simulations elucidate the sequence of heme reduction within the pentaheme scaffold, and identify the signals of all five hemes in the EPR spectra. Electrochemical experiments ascertain the reduction potentials for each heme, observed in a narrow +11 (Heme 5) to –212 mV (Heme 3) range (vs SHE). Based on quantitative analysis/simulation of the EPR data, we demonstrate that Hemes 4 and 5 are reduced first (before the active site Heme 1) and serve the purpose of an electron storage unit within the protein. To probe the role of the central Heme 3, a H108M NrfA variant was generated where the reduction potential of Heme 3 is shifted positively (from –212 mV to +29 mV). Here, the H108M mutation significantly impacts the distribution of electrons within the pentaheme scaffold and the reduction potentials of the hemes, reducing the catalytic activity of the enzyme to 3% compared to wild–type. We propose that this is due to Heme 3’s important role as an electron gateway in the wild–type enzyme.

Flexible Boundary Design for a Chattanooga Microgrid Powered by Landfill Solar Photovoltaic and Battery Storage

Landfill based microgrids powered by renewable energy aid reliability and resiliency while promoting environmental and energy justice. This paper aims to design a flexible boundary algorithm for a proposed Chattanooga landfill microgrid with the ability to shrink or expand its boundaries based on the available power from the solar PV and battery storage. This helps to improve resiliency unlike the conventional fixed boundary microgrids. The flexible boundary algorithm determines the combination and switching status of the intellirupter ® which changes the microgrid boundaries to achieve power balance by dropping or energizing specific load sections. Finally, the microgrid with flexible boundary was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and performed satisfactorily when tested under various scenarios.
